We Tested the 10 Best Japanese Powder Foundations in 2023 (Hair and Makeup Artist-Reviewed)

Japanese powder foundations are highly functional products that help create a refined look, evening out the skin, and create a great base for your makeup. While Japanese foundations previously were mostly known for their matte finishes, recently, many brands have been releasing products with on-trend dewy finishes, which are also great for those with dry skin. However, there are a few key things to consider when it comes to Japanese powder foundations, such as how much coverage it provides, how durable it is, and how it feels to use. Moreover, with a plethora of drugstore brands such as Kanebo, Brilliage, and Orbis, and high-end makeup brands such as Albion, IPSA, and POLA, it can be difficult to know which one to choose.

To figure out the best Japanese powder foundation, we gathered the best-selling products on e-commerce sites popular in Japan, such as Amazon, Rakuten, Yahoo! Shopping, and @cosme Shopping, and tested them all.

We tested each powder foundation for the following three points:
  1. Coverage
  2. Smudge resistance
  3. Feel

We'll also introduce some tips for selecting a powder foundation and how to apply it in our buying guide after the products. Keep reading to find out more!

What's Japanese Face Powder?

What's Japanese Face Powder?

Japanese powder foundation can even out the skin and provide great coverage for areas of concern. What's more, Japanese powder foundation is highly functional, often formulated with moisturizing ingredients, as well as offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays to make sure your skin stays hydrated and protected throughout the day.

According to some, Japanese powder foundation is less irritating on the skin and doesn't clog their pores as much. Moreover, as we found out in our tests, most Japanese powder foundation is incredibly resilient to smudging and can withstand moisture and friction.

You might expect a powder to come out to a matte finish, but recently manufacturers have been releasing products with dewy finishes that are more on-trend. If the product is formulated with a moisturizing component such as oils and plant extracts, it will work well for those who have dry skin.

Japanese powder foundations are great for toning down shine and creating smooth-looking skin Using the correct basic skills, even beginners can easily create beautiful finishes.

All these factors combined make Japanese powder foundation a great product to consider for everyone, regardless of your skin type, season, and climate.

How to choose a powder foundation

Here are six points that are important to check when choosing a powder foundation. Make sure to keep them in mind!

① Choose either a Dewy or Matte Finish Based on Your Skin Type and Your Ideal Finish

Choose either a Dewy or Matte Finish Based on Your Skin Type and Your Ideal Finish
Broadly speaking, powder foundations either have a dewy or matte finish.

While most dewy powder foundations are formulated with moisturizing ingredients such as oils or plant extracts, there are some products that offer a dewy finish through pearl or glitter. Some dewy powder foundations have "glow" in the name, which may help indicate its finish, so keep that in mind.

On the other hand, products formulated with polymers tend to have a matte finish. Matte powder foundations can reduce the amount of depth in your face, making them better if you're looking to soften your defined facial features.

If you would like to reduce powderiness, which is a common concern with matte powder foundations, use a brush rather than a puff! For more details about applying powder foundations, read until the end of the article.

② Choose a Durable Product With Good Coverage

When choosing a powder foundation, we recommend selecting one that can correct your skin tone while concealing skin-related concerns you might have. Moreover, consider its durability, which is an important aspect to keep in mind if you plan on wearing makeup all day.

Choose One That Spreads Easily and Provides Coverage Without Looking Caked-on or Powdery

Choose One That Spreads Easily and Provides Coverage Without Looking Caked-on or Powdery
If you're concerned about things like hyperpigmentation and large pores, choose a powder foundation that offers plenty of coverage. However, not all powder foundations are created equal; avoid products that are too powdery or those that apply unevenly. Instead, look for a product that blends with your skin smoothly and evenly.

Moreover, how well a powder foundation spreads is another important aspect to consider. Products that spread well can help you even out your skin without advanced skills. If you're concerned about whether or not a product applies unevenly, try it out before purchasing if possible, or read reviews online.

If you want to conceal specific concerns, use a powder foundation and a concealer.

Firmer products in a palette are best for hyperpigmentation and acne scars, while liquid concealer is better for areas that move more, such as around the eyes and mouth.

Powder Foundations Are Highly Smudge Resistant

Powder Foundations Are Highly Smudge Resistant

All items earned high scores in the smudge resistance test, so we can conclude that powder foundation is pretty durable

This makes it useful if you sweat a lot, as well as for beach or pool days, or even when you are wearing a mask.

However, we didn't check whether powder foundation is tough against oil, such as sebum or when used with foundation primers. So keep in mind that it doesn’t mean that a powder foundation always has staying power in any situation.

Akemi Kibe
Hair and Makeup ArtistAkemi Kibe

Powder foundation's durability depends on your skincare routine and how you put a primer on. You can make a foundation stay on for longer by applying each base makeup product well until the skin becomes soft to the touch.

③ Choose Between Pressed or Loose Powders

There are two types of powder foundation. Each type offers different pros and cons, as well as finishes.

Pressed Powder Foundations Create Porcelain-Like Skin

Pressed Powder Foundations Create Porcelain-Like Skin

As the name implies, pressed powder foundations are made by pressing powder down to an almost solid form. Most powder foundations are pressed, and usually you use the included puff to put it on.

Pressed powder foundations contain more oil than loose powder foundations, meaning they boast excellent adhesion to the skin. They also have great coverage and even your skin out to create a smooth base.

Loose Foundation Makes Your Skin Look Soft and Light

Loose Foundation Makes Your Skin Look Soft and Light

Loose powder foundations are applied using a brush and offer a light and airy finish.

Loose powder foundations provide more natural-looking coverage, making them perfect for creating a dewy, no-makeup look. These also double as face powder, so they're also great for when you want to make your makeup last longer while suppressing greasiness.

④ Choose a Color According Your Skin Tone

Choose a Color According Your Skin Tone

Foundation isn't meant to be applied all over the face. Rather, they should mostly be applied around the center of the face where you're more likely to develop redness, hyperpigmentation, blemishes, and large pores.

If you want to add depth to your face and make it looks smaller, choose a color that's slightly lighter than your natural skin tone.

However, if you want a more natural-looking finish, choose colors like ochre.

Applying foundation around the hairline leads to your face looking flat

Make sure to not apply foundation under your nose or around your jawline, since this can look unnatural. All you need to do is consider where you want to cover up the most to create a neat finish.

⑤ Consider Features Like Moisturizing Ingredients or UV Protection

Some powder foundations have extra features. Here, we'll go over the two features we recommend looking for.

Look for Powder Foundations With UV Protection to Prevent Damage

Look for Powder Foundations With UV Protection to Prevent Damage

While we mostly think that we need to protect our skin in the summer, UV rays fluctuate depending on the season and the climate you live in, but UV rays never go away entirely, making it essential to protect your skin throughout the year. Each product has a different SPF and PA rating, so it's best to understand what those mean.

SPF protects from UVB rays, which can cause sunburns. SPF ratings range from 1 to 50+; the higher the number is, the longer it protects from UVB rays.

PA protects from UVA rays that over time can cause your skin to lose firmness and elasticity. If you're unfamiliar with the PA rating system, it's a rating system that was developed in Japan and is divided into four stages, described with + marks. The more + marks, the higher the protection it offers.

For more information on SPF and PA, check out our buying guide below on Japanese sunscreens!

Akemi Kibe
Hair and Makeup ArtistAkemi Kibe

UVA rays, which damage your skin with long-term exposure, will affect your skin in the long run, so it's better to choose a product that has a high PA rating.

Moisturizing Ingredients Provide Extra Skincare

Moisturizing Ingredients Provide Extra Skincare

Powder foundations formulated with moisturizing ingredients are great for those with dry skin, as well as if you're older since dryness can cause wrinkles.

Products can be formulated with varying moisturizing ingredients, such as plant extracts like aloe vera leaf extract and beech sprout extract or oils like grapeseed oil, to name a few.

Even if they might be formulated with oils, powder foundations are less likely to feel sticky. During the dryer months, or if you live in a dry climate, consider using a powder foundation with moisturizing ingredients regardless of your skin type.

⑥ Consider How the Product Feels to Use

Consider How the Product Feels to Use

No matter how much you like a certain brand, it'll be difficult to continue using a product that doesn't feel good to use. Taking what we've learned from our tests, we've rounded up the traits that make a powder foundation feel good to use.

Powder foundations that feel good to use:

  • Compact size that makes it easy to carry
  • Smoothly opens and closes tight
  • No powder fallout
  • The container doesn't easily get dirty, and when it does, it's easy to wipe off
  • Includes a mirror
  • Doesn't have too strong of a scent

How We Tested the Products

How We Tested the Products

We collected the best-selling powder foundations on Japanese e-commerce sites such as Amazon, Rakuten, Yahoo! shopping, and @cosme and tested them all.

We tested each product for the following:

  1. Coverage
  2. Smudge resistance
  3. Feel

※Some products are listed in Japanese prices converted into USD for easy viewing.

Test ① Coverage

Test ① Coverage

When it comes to choosing a powder foundation, coverage is the most important point to consider.

To test this, we enlisted the help of a tester and applied all the powder foundations on her skin, then had three Japanese women from the mybest editorial team check the finish. Products were then evaluated based on whether or not they had a beautiful finish while offering great coverage on a five-point scale.

Test ② Smudge Resistance

Test ② Smudge Resistance

Next, we tested the foundations for resistance to smudging.

We applied the powder foundations onto synthetic leather, then sprayed artificial sweat on them, made from water and horse oil. We then wrapped a seven-ounce weight in tissue paper and dragged it across the artificial leather to check how much foundation came off. Products that didn't smudge after being sprayed with synthetic sweat or having a weight dragged across were given a higher score.

Test ③ Feel

Test ③ Feel
Finally, we looked at how the foundations feel to use and apply.

We again asked three Japanese testers from mybest's editorial team to test how each powder foundation felt to use. Products that weren't stressful to use and were easy to apply was given a full score.

How to Apply Powder Foundation

Here are tips to put a powder foundation on the skin and make it stay in place.

Start From the Center of the Face and Move Outwards at a Consistent Angle

Start From the Center of the Face and Move Outwards at a Consistent Angle
You can easily apply powder foundation by maintaining the angle of your puff. Learn the basics of applying a powder foundation by following these instructions.

Steps:

  1. Apply powder foundation from 1/3 to half of the sponge (this will be applied to one side of your face)
  2. Apply from the center of the face to the outside in parallel strokes
  3. After finishing the cheeks and forehead, apply the remaining foundation to the tip of the nose and underneath the eyes. Bend the puff when applying to these areas.
  4. Check if there's a spot where you've applied too much foundation. If you find a thick spot, fix it by spreading the foundation out from that area.

If you want a natural-looking finish without looking too powdery, I recommend using a brush. Fluffy brushes can apply powder foundation evenly, allowing you to create a neat finish with no skill required.

The Durability of Your Powder Foundation Depends on Your Skincare Routine and Primer

The Durability of Your Powder Foundation Depends on Your Skincare Routine and Primer
The most important things that help make your makeup stays on is your skincare routine and base makeup. Making sure that your base makeup is neatly done ensures that it's adhered well onto the skin, helping your powder foundation stay on.

Steps:

  1. Soak a cotton pad with toner and lightly pat it onto your face
  2. Warm up your emulsion and cream with your hands, then blend it into the skin until it feels smooth
  3. Apply your primer in a similar fashion, and press it in with the palms of your hands to make sure that it adheres to the skin
  4. Apply powder foundation
