What's the Difference Between Eyelid Tape and Glue?

What's the Difference Between Eyelid Tape and Glue?

What makes eyelid tapes great is their incredible adhesiveness, allowing you to create well-defined double eyelids even if your eyelids are fairly thick.

When using eyelid glue, you have to wait for the glue to completely dry for best results, while with tape, all you need to do is stick them on to instantly create neat double eyelids.

However, eyelid glues do look more natural, and you can fine-tune the shape of your double eyelids to your liking.

How to Choose Double Eyelid Tape

We’ll get into how we tested and compared all the packages of tape, but before that, we want to introduce five things you should look out for when picking out double eyelid tape.

① Choose a Type of Tape That Matches Your Eyelids

Eyelid tape is available in three major types: single-sided, double-sided, and fiber. They all offer different finishes and adhesiveness, so it's important to choose according to the kind of eyelids you have and the results you seek.

Lately, there are even products that can be applied by wetting the tape with water. Using a spray bottle to wet these tapes, which are made of a mesh material, results in an incredibly adhesive tape.

While they are mostly unnoticeable even when your eyes are closed, they can also easily come off when exposed to water after being applied, so be warned.

Thin Eyelids Call for Single-Sided Tape

Thin Eyelids Call for Single-Sided Tape
Single-sided tape is good if you’ve got thin or hooded eyelids. Single-sided tape is only sticky on one side, and it wedges itself into your flesh, creating a fold along the upper edge.

Single-sided tape works by wedging it into your skin to create a fold along the upper edge of your eyelid, resulting in a double eyelid. Since it doesn't actually stick your skin together, single-sided tape won’t tug on your eyelids and make it difficult to blink.

Single-sided tapes are great for creating narrow, natural-looking double eyelids and are best for those with thin eyelids. On the other hand, if you have thicker eyelids, single-sided tape may not provide enough adhesion.

Thick Eyelids Call for Double-Sided Tape

Thick Eyelids Call for Double-Sided Tape
Double-sided tape, as the name implies, sticks your eyelids together. Unlike single-sided tape, they're more discreet but can tug on your flesh more when you try to close your eyes.

Double-sided tape is best if you’ve got thick eyelids or like a really deep fold. To get a bit graphic, the tape pulls in pieces of skin on either side of itself and sticks them together, resulting in a distinct crease. They're also great for those who have hidden double eyelids or for those who want to adjust the width of the folds in their double eyelids.

If you have thick eyelids and struggle to make a neat double eyelid, choose a thicker, wider tape to ensure that the tape is properly wedged in your eyelid all the way. If you want to create wider double eyelids, it's also good to choose a wider tape to help facilitate that.

Use a Fiber Tape If You Have Thin Eyelids and Want More Control

Use a Fiber Tape If You Have Thin Eyelids and Want More Control

Fiber tapes can allow you to adjust the width of your double eyelids down to the millimeter. They're essentially thin strips of fiber that are adhesive on both sides. You apply them onto your eyelids and snip off the unnecessary ends with a pair of scissors. Of the three types, these are the most discreet, given that they have the smallest surface area.

However, this small surface area also means that they aren't as adhesive as other types, and depending on the product, you might struggle to wedge them deep enough to create a neat fold, and they may come loose over time. Moreover, since you have to cut the extra ends off with a special scissor, which is much easier said than done, this adds an extra step to your makeup routine and there’s a learning curve, making it more for advanced users.

② Look for Tapes With a Length of at Least One Inch

Look for Tapes With a Length of at Least One Inch

While eyelid tapes can come in all shapes and sizes, such as oval or even crescent, the shape doesn't really make much of a difference in terms of the final result.

More important is that you choose the appropriate length for your eyes. Most Japanese eyes are about one inch (25 millimeters) in width, so tapes of this length will work with most. However, if you choose an eyelid tape that's longer than the width of your eyes, snip off the ends to adjust the size.

Again, the recommended length of one inch is just a starting point, and this will vary from person to person. What's most important is to know how wide your eyes are and choose the appropriate length, or adjust the length of the tape accordingly by getting a longer one and cutting them.

Naoko Shinohara
Hair and Makeup ArtistNaoko Shinohara

When cutting an eyelid tape to better match your eyes, make sure you taper the ends and retain the curve of the tape.

③ Choose a Color That Matches Your Skin Tone For Stealthiness

For those who wear eye makeup, it's important to consider how well the eyelid tape works with your makeup. The color and material of the tape can greatly affect the finish, so choose one based on your desired results.

Mesh Tapes in Beige are Super Discreet

Mesh Tapes in Beige are Super Discreet

During our tests, we found that mesh tapes in beige were the least noticeable with our Japanese testers. Mesh tapes have small perforations that help them blend into the skin better, and won't get oddly shiny when you apply eyeshadow. Note that the best eyelid tape color for you will vary depending on your skin tone, so try to find one that matches your skin the best.

Non-woven fabric, which is also rough on the outside, was also easy to apply eye makeup on. However, with smooth polyethylene, our eyeshadow didn't adhere to it at all, so it's not the best for creating a no-makeup look.

Ultimately, when we say discreet, we mean in terms of how well it matches eye makeup. Additionally, another determining factor when it comes to how noticeable your eyelid tape looks also depends on how you apply it.

If You Use Bright Colored Makeup, Choose a Clear Eyelid Tape, But Not a Glossy One

If You Use Bright Colored Makeup, Choose a Clear Eyelid Tape, But Not a Glossy One

While we found that beige worked best with our testers, depending on what color makeup you apply on top, this can make the beige stand out, and not in a good way. If you are particular about what color you use around your eyes or prefer using brighter colors, choose a clear eyelid tape.

That being said, avoid glossy tapes, since your makeup will slide right off of them. They'll also have a different texture from your eye makeup and will look too contrasting. Choose a matte eyelid tape to avoid this.

Naoko Shinohara
Hair and Makeup ArtistNaoko Shinohara

If you apply eye makeup on top of your eyelid tape, using colors that match your skin tone the best will make it less noticeable when your eyeshadow starts to build up around the edges of your eyelid tape.

Choose Any Color or Material If You Don't Wear Eye Makeup

Choose Any Color or Material If You Don't Wear Eye Makeup

If you don't wear eye makeup when using an eyelid tape, you won't have to worry about the color or material of the tape, since eyelid tape is designed to be discreet in the first place; It's just when you start using makeup that you need to consider the color and material!

If you don't wear eye makeup, make sure you consider the type of tape and the length.

④ Consider a Tape that’s Resistant to Sweat and Water If You're Active

Consider a Tape that’s Resistant to Sweat and Water If You're Active
Generally speaking, double eyelid tape is more resistant to sweat and water than glue. Even so, if you’re worried about it coming off, know that there’s super-strength tape that has been designed to last through anything.

If you’re active and know you’re going to be sweating or swimming, then look for tape that is water and sweat-resistant. It's also good to consider using one during the hotter months. Usually, manufacturers will indicate whether or not a tape is waterproof on the package, so be sure to take a look.

In our tests, we found that slightly firmer materials and fiber tapes were pretty durable against sweat and water. However, mesh tapes, which are applied with water, weren't really able to withstand moisture. While they are discreet, it's best to use them carefully.

⑤ For Minimum Stress on the Eyelids, Choose a Surgical Tape

For Minimum Stress on the Eyelids, Choose a Surgical Tape
The skin on your eyelids is incredibly delicate. To avoid irritating it, get tape that’s easy to remove. This holds true for everyone, but it’s especially crucial to do so if you have sensitive skin.

If you need to tug and pull to get double eyelid tape off, you’ll damage your skin over time. To minimize stress on your eyelids, look for products that use surgical or medical-grade tape.

Naoko Shinohara
Hair and Makeup ArtistNaoko Shinohara

Eyelid tapes are great to use even if you already have double eyelids or hidden double eyelids, you can use eyelid tapes to adjust your eyelids when your eyes are feeling off, or when you want to widen your double eyelids.

Moreover, by using eyelid tape when you go to sleep, your eyes will develop a deeper crease that helps define your double eyelids better in the morning when you wake up.

Single-Sided Tape With Natural Shine-Resistant Finish

BN's Fluffy Lid Tape is shine-resistant and therefore offers a natural finish. However, note that the tape's surface is patterned with small dots which can be somewhat noticeable, particularly when you look down and expose your eyelid.

While some testers noted that the tape looked a little loose by night, they still reported that the tape managed to hold their double eyelids in place without any major changes. When undergoing the water-resistance test, the crease loosened a little but it didn't cause any noticeable changes in appearance.

In terms of feel, the testers were impressed by the ease of both application and removal. They noted that it was easy to apply in one go and to remove using the applicator provided. If you're looking for an eyelid tape that you can wear even without eye makeup, we suggest this seamless eyelid tape.

ArtsbrainsMezaik FreeFiver Standard Type

Clear Fiber Tape with Unnoticeable Adhesive

Artsbrains’s Mezaik Free Fiber Standard Type is a fiber eyelid tape. It's designed to be stretched and thinned like a string upon application so that it can be nestled into the eyelid and create an unnoticeable finish.

However, testers noted that this product's stretchability caused the adhesive to be on the weaker side and that it began to peel off at the corners after long stretches of use. That being said, it showed great water resistance, as it didn't budge when sprayed with water.

Regarding the feel of the product, some testers felt uncomfortable that this product required the skin to be pulled, noting that even opening their eyes took some getting used to at first. They also noted that there's a bit of a learning curve with this product, as you need to keep the fibers from sagging as you apply it in line with the curve of your eyelid.

We recommend this tape for those with thin eyelids or those wanting a discreet eyelid tape.

No.3

Koji HonpoDream Magic Miracle Change Eye Tape II Slim

Best Eyelid Tape for Those Who Wear Eye Makeup Regularly

Koji Honpo’s Dream Magic Miracle Change Eye Tape II Slim is a single-sided eyelid tape made of adhesive bandage. The rougher material makes it easy to apply eye makeup on top of and mask its appearance under makeup.

Although its thicker material can help create a more clear and prominent double eyelid crease, this can make its appearance slightly more noticeable when the eyes are open.

Some testers reported that the tape started to come off after many hours of use. They also noted it sagged quite easily when water was sprayed on it. However, they noted that it could be applied and removed seamlessly without any pain or pulling. We recommend this tape for those who like to wear eye makeup.

No.4

Dear LauraAutomatic Beauty Single Eye Tape

Soft and Unnoticeable Water Resistant Tape

Dear Laura's Automatic Beauty Single Eye Tape is a clear single-sided eye tape. It is thicker in width, but the soft and flexible material makes it unnoticeable even when the eyes are closed.

While the testers with single eyelids said that they were able to create great double eyelids with this tape, the testers with hooded eyelids said that the softness of the tape made it hard to create a clear crease in the lids. That being said, more than half of the testers praised this product's durability and finish, noting that it was able to maintain a freshly applied appearance for many hours.

The tape was also both highly water-resistant and easy to remove. While it didn’t wear off even when sprayed with water, it was painlessly removed with lukewarm water. This product is especially great for those with single eyelids.

Best Single-sided Tape for Those With Thicker or Hooded Eyelids

Seria’s Ideal Lids - Clear Wide for Thicker Eyelids is a clear single-sided tape catering to those with thicker eyelids. The tape is a bit wider than most, which helps it dig into the eyelid better and create a stronger double eyelid crease.

Although the tape's finely textured surface works to prevent shine and noticeability, we noted that it could look a little lumpy when eye makeup is applied on top of it.

While the inner corners of the tape seemed to peel off a bit when sprayed with water, it helped maintain the double eyelid just as well as it did when it was first applied. The testers also said that the tape's larger shape and rigid made it easy to apply and helped it stay on the lid for a long time. With its long lasting durability, this tape is a great option for those with thicker eyelids.

No.6

Beauty WorldNatural Eye Tape, Double Eyelid Tape for Bare Skin Contact

Soft and Water-Resistant Tape for Those With Thinner Eyelids

Beauty World's Natural Eye Tape, Double Eyelid Tape for Bare Skin Contact is a light beige single-sided eye tape. Despite it being made with bandage, it's still soft and thin, making it hardly noticeable even when the eyes are closed.

Testers noted that its adhesive power was on the weaker side. For this reason, those with thicker or hooded eyelids had a harder time creating a clear double eyelid crease. Another drawback was that its smooth surface also made it more difficult to apply eye shadow on top of it.

Our testers reported that although this product did a good job staying on for the entire day, it didn't necessarily stay in place and maintain a crease nicely. But in terms of feel, others were impressed by the perforated cut outs in the backing paper which made the tape easy to peel off. In addition, the tape was water-resistant. All in all, we recommend this to those with thin eyelids or who don’t usually wear eye makeup.

No.7

Koji HonpoEyetalk One Touch Eye Tape

Mess-Free Double-Sided Tape With Applicator

Koji Honpo's Eyetalk One Touch Eye Tape is unique because it's a double-sided tape that can be applied without actually touching the tape itself. The tape is attached to an applicator that you simply press into your eyelid where you want a double eyelid crease.

Testers reported that the applicator helped create a natural looking double eyelid, but the eyelids looked slightly pulled up when the eyes were closed. In addition, more than half of the testers experienced the edges of the tape came off over time.

In terms of water resistance, the adhesive got weakened and peeled off when water was sprayed on it. When it came to feel, the testers' opinions were split. Some said that they felt a pulling sensation on their eyelids, while others were impressed by the applicator and how it allowed them to apply the tape without touching the adhesive. Although the tape didn't seem to hold too well, we still recommend you give it a try if you're interested in a double-sided tape.

Single-Sided Beige Tape With Shorter Width

Co-medical's Shonan Beauty Eyelid Tape Single-Sided Type is a beige single-sided eyelid tape.

Because of its shorter width (13mm) and weaker ability to lift the eyelid up, some testers said that they could not create an effective double eyelid with this product. Instead, they said they often ended up with hooded eyes and that it also didn't last too long. This means it would likely work better for those with thin eyelids or those who want to create a narrower, lighter double eyelid crease.

Some testers also pointed out some difficulty in using the tape, saying that it was too short and hard to peel off from the backing paper. Some also found it hard to find the apt placement for the tape on their eyelids. That being said, the tape was highly water-resistant, as it only moved slightly when sprayed with water.

No.9

FEAT JAPANFD Bridge Fiber II

Fiber Eyelid Tape With Customizable Length and Width

FEAT JAPAN’s FD Bridge Fiber II is a beige eye tape made of the manufacturer's original fiber adhesive. This flexible tape can be stretched to your desired thinness by lightly pulling both ends of the fiber at once.

Testers noted that the somewhat stiff material made it hard for the tape to nestle into the eyelid crease and that the translucent fiber was easily noticeable when the eyes were closed. They also reported that it didn't have a strong hold and that more than half of the testers were unable to maintain a clean double eyelid crease throughout the day.

However, the tape was highly water-resistant and its adhesive power didn't change at all even when sprayed with water. In terms of feel, one of the testers mentioned that the tape's rigidity made it difficult to cut.

No.10

Fiber Eyelid Tape With Easy-to-Use Applicator

BN’s Micro Fiber is a clear fiber-type eyelid tape. Since the fiber's elasticity was weaker, it gave the impression that it would be hard to create a strong double eyelid line. This turned out to be true with more than half of our testers not being able to achieve ideal double eyelids.

It also had weak hold and all of the testers experienced the fiber starting to come off over time. The tape especially began to come off when sprayed with water, but it was not too noticeable when the eyes were open.

When it came to feel, it received fairly good reviews. In particular, they appreciated that the handle was color-coded gold for easier visibility and that the product didn't feel too heavy on the eyelids.

How We Tested the Eyelid Tapes

How We Tested the Eyelid Tapes
After gathering the most popular Japanese eyelid tapes from Amazon, Rakuten, Yahoo! Shopping and @cosme SHOPPING, we tested them all.

We tested each product for the following:

  1. Finish
  2. Durability
  3. Water resistance
  4. Ease of Use

Test ① Finish

Test ① Finish

First, we reviewed not only how well the products were able to produce double eyelids, but also how well they could provide a natural-looking finish.

We gathered four Japanese members from the editorial team; two with single eyelids and two with double eyelids, and had them test each product to see which ones provided the most natural finish.

The highest scores were given to the eyelid tapes that were able to provide the most convincing results and were the least noticeable once applied.

Test ② Durability

Test ② Durability

Next, we tested how durable the tapes were, particularly by seeing how well they lasted throughout an entire day.

The same four testers reviewed how well their eyelid tapes held up, checking how their eyes looked 10 hours after their first application in the morning.

Test ③ Water Resistance

Test ③ Water Resistance

As with any makeup product, it's useful for eyelid tapes to have some water-resistant properties so they can hold up against heat, sweat, and water.

To test this, we used a spray bottle to apply water onto the tester's eyelids. Then, we checked to see if the tape would wear off after being lightly patted with a tissue. The tapes that started to peel off or loosen from the skin were considered non-water resistant.

Test ④ Ease of Use

Test ④ Ease of Use
Finally, the four testers reviewed how easy the tapes were to apply and remove, specifically looking at the following:

  • Comfortability during application (did it feel sticky or itchy?)
  • Ease of application (was it easy to apply?)
  • Ease of removal (could it be removed quickly and painlessly?)
  • How easy the product was to remove from its backing paper, ease of peeling off the fibers (was there any breakage when peeling? was it easy to avoid fingerprints on the tape?)

Tips on How to Make Nice Double Eyelids with Tape

Double eyelid tape has a bit of a learning curve, but once you get used to it, it’s a breeze. And in order to speed up that learning process, we’ve introduced some tips and tricks to make you a double eyelid master.

How to Apply Eyelid Tape in Four Steps

How to Apply Eyelid Tape in Four Steps

Putting on an eyelid tape is simple if you follow these four steps.

Step ①: Pat off any oil or moisture from your eyelids with a cotton pad or a tissue.

Step ②: Before you peel off the tape, bring it to your eyelid and check the curve of the tape and where you want to apply it.

Step ③: When you've decided where to apply the tape, apply it by either closing your eyes or looking down. When doing so, make sure you press down on the apex, or center of the curve, then press down on the ends for a neat finish.

Step ④: After you've applied the tape, blink a few times, then wedge in the tape with an eyelid fork to make sure the tape doesn't move around.

Naoko Shinohara
Hair and Makeup ArtistNaoko Shinohara

To ensure your eyelid tape stays put, remember the following: apply the proper amount of pressure to lock it in place, make sure you don't transfer any oil from your fingers to the tape, and make sure you place the tape in a spot that best suits the shape of your eyelid.

In order to create a natural double eyelid, another trick you can try is to use an eyelid fork to create a double eyelid and see if it's a spot that can easily crease, as well as whether or not the crease will stay put for extended periods.

How to Apply Makeup Over Eyelid Tape

How to Apply Makeup Over Eyelid Tape

When applying eye makeup over your eyelid tape, choose a powder eyeshadow, since it has fewer oil-based ingredients. Cream or liquid eye shadows, which have a higher oil content, can make the tape less adhesive, so it's best to avoid these.

When applying your powder eyeshadow, gently tap it on your eyelid with your fingertips or an applicator, rather than rubbing it on.

Moreover, pearly or glittery eyeshadow is the ultimate camouflage for eyelid tape, since the shine from your eyeshadow will mask the gleam from the tape. Moreover, colors that are closer to your natural skin tone, such as brown or orange, will hide tape better than more outlandish colors, like blue or pink, and won't make your eyelid tape stand out when your eye makeup gets smudged.

If you don’t want anyone to find out you’re wearing double eyelid tape, you can’t rely on the product by itself. You also need some good eye makeup. Here are some tips and tricks on how to apply shadow to make your double lids look as natural as possible.

Gently Peel Off the Tape From the Ends

Gently Peel Off the Tape From the Ends

When it's time to remove your eyelid tape, use either a cleansing oil or water and gently massage your eyelids. After the ends of the tape have curled up, gently peel it off while holding down your eyelids.

If the eyelid tape is stuck on really well, try soaking a cotton bud in makeup remover, then gently rub the edges of the eyelid tape to make it easier to remove.

After you remove your eyelid tape, be sure to moisturize your eyelids!

Whatever you do, don’t rip off double eyelid tape by force. The skin on your eyelids is very delicate, and you run the risk of damaging it if you treat it too roughly.

Naoko Shinohara
Hair and Makeup ArtistNaoko Shinohara

When you rip off eyelid tape, it can stretch out the skin on your eyelids or even peel off the outer layer of your skin, so watch out!

Does Using Eyelid Tape Frequently Stretch Out Your Skin?

Does Using Eyelid Tape Frequently Stretch Out Your Skin?

The skin that makes up your eyelids are particularly thin and are also pretty sensitive. Eyelid tapes, which have a strong adhesiveness, need to be peeled off gently in order to prevent irritation or stretching out your eyelids, making them droopy over time.

If you've been using eyelid tapes continuously and find your eyelids are getting red or you start to feel some pain, it's best to stop using them for a while.

Moreover, don't forget to moisturize your eyes on a daily basis!
