10 Best Tried and True Japanese Heated Eyelash Curlers in 2023 (Hair and Makeup Artist-Reviewed)

A heated eyelash curler can be a savior when styling your eye makeup. Not only are they being released by electronics manufacturers such as Panasonic and KAI Corporation, but brands like Nitori and Daiso are producing lines of heated eyelash curlers.

However, functionality varies from product to product, such as those with an adjustable temperature setting and those you can use with eyelash extensions. Things like charging types and cleaning methods also vary, so you want to choose the curler that‘s most convenient for your individual preference.

To figure out which was the best Japanese heated eyelash curler, we gathered the 32 best-selling products on e-commerce sites popular in Japan (such as Amazon, Rakuten and Yahoo! Shopping) and tested them all.

We tested each of the products for the following:
  • Finish
  • Keep
  • Feel
  • Functionality

What are the Benefits of Using a Japanese Heated Eyelash Curler?

What are the Benefits of Using a Japanese Heated Eyelash Curler?

A heated eyelash curler uses the same principle as hair curlers, applying heat to give lashes a long-lasting sky-high curl. Curls produced by heated eyelash curlers give the eyes a glamorous look befitting models and actors.

The greatest advantage of the heated eyelash curler is that the curls will last much longer, staying firmly in shape for an entire day without needing to be touched up throughout.

However, using a heated curler on eyelash extensions can be dangerous, especially if the glue isn't particularly heat-resistant because the glue can melt, potentially burning your skin. If you have eyelash extensions, check with your salon beforehand to see if you can use heated curlers.

Naoko Shinohara
Hair and Makeup ArtistNaoko Shinohara

Personally, I recommend using stick-type curlers, as the curler-type tend to tug on the eyelash extensions, potentially making them fall off.

When curling eyelash extensions, make sure that you only apply the heater towards the roots of your lashes before where the extensions are glued on. By curling your lashes at the base, your eyes will really pop and shine without having to re-curl the entire lash line.

Does Using Heated Eyelash Curlers Damage Your Lashes?

Does Using Heated Eyelash Curlers Damage Your Lashes?

Using a heated eyelash curler for extended periods of time can potentially damage your lashes. If you're using a curler, only leave it on for three seconds. Leave it on for around five seconds if you're using a stick-type.

While there's no problem with using heated eyelash curlers daily, your eyelashes will get slightly damaged with continued use, so we recommend using eyelash serums to minimize damage.

If you find that your lashes just won't cooperate, instead of continuing to force your lashes to point upward with a heated eyelash curler, try using a regular eyelash curler first.

How to Choose a Heated Eyelash Curler – Buying Guide

Here are three essential points to keep in mind when choosing a Japanese heated eyelash curler to purchase.

① Choose Between a Curler or Stick Based on Your Desired Finish

Heated eyelash curlers generally come in two types: curler or stick. Each has different properties and respective pros and cons.

Curler Types: Curl Lashes From the Roots For a Stylish Finish

Curler Types: Curl Lashes From the Roots For a Stylish Finish

The curler type works by clamping the lashes and applying heat to make them hold their shape. They're operated similarly to regular eyelash curlers, making them easy to use and are recommended for beginners.

These products are best for those whose lashes tend to droop and don't last long enough when curled with a manual curler. This type will increase the volume of the roots of their lashes, and the curls will keep for a long time.

In our tests for how long curls were kept, the curler type produced results that lasted firmly even after 8 hours. The curls were created from the roots to the ends of the lashes by force and heat, so they did not easily droop over time and remained upright.

One thing to note is that the strength of the curler is not adjustable, so this product is not suitable for creating a gentle moderate curl or for those who want to change the angle of the curl depending on their mood. Also, those with shorter eyelashes may find it difficult to fully clamp their lashes with these types.

Naoko Shinohara
Hair and Makeup ArtistNaoko Shinohara

Curler-types raise the lashes firmly from their roots, making the eyes really pop and look bigger. I recommend them to those who want to make their eyes appear larger.

Stick Types: Requires More Technique But Gives More Flexibility in Curling

Stick Types: Requires More Technique But Gives More Flexibility in Curling

Like mascara, the stick type is used by pressing the heater against the lashes to curl them in sections. It is excellent for carrying around with you since it can be applied directly to your lashes for quick touch-ups.

The advantage of the stick type is that you can adjust the curls according to your mood and makeup that day to create curls that perfectly match your preferences. Since it does not have a fixed shape like the curler-type, it can be used regardless of the specific shape of your eyes or eyelids.

In our tests, stick-type curlers that were shaped with a gentle curve and had thicker heaters were easier to apply directly to all areas of the lashes with consistency. On the other hand, those with straight, small heaters had difficulty getting the roots to rise fully, failing to create a voluminous curl.

The way the heater is moved and the angle at which it is applied determines the finished look, so some practice is required until you can master these types and create curls precisely as you imagined.

Naoko Shinohara
Hair and Makeup ArtistNaoko Shinohara

Just like regular hair, eyelashes also grow in unique patterns. Using a stick type can help you curl individual sections of your eyelashes that tend to droop.

By raising the lashes only from the middle to the tips while keeping the roots low, you can create natural-looking J-curls.

② For Easy Use, Check For Features Such As Heating Time and Adjustability

Often you may want to curl your lashes quickly during busy mornings or as a touch-up during the day, making it important to check the functionality of each product. Additionally, for long-term sanitary use, it is important to look at how easy it is to clean the product.

For Efficiency’s Sake, Look For Products That Heat up in 10 Seconds or Less

For Efficiency’s Sake, Look For Products That Heat up in 10 Seconds or Less

Regardless of the shape of the eyelash curler, preheating times vary from product to product. Check the preheating time before purchasing, as it is a crucial point that determines whether they can fit in your busy morning routine.

If you are looking for something quick and easy to use, choose a product that heats up quickly in around 10 seconds. These products can be used in the mornings when you don't have much time or when fixing your makeup during the day and can operate smoothly.

In our functionality tests, we felt that a less than one minute preheating time was generally acceptable. Curlers that were ready under this time were ones that we best recommend for easy daily use.

However, those with a preheat time of 2 to 3 minutes received a low rating, with our testers saying that they felt the waiting time was too long.

The best curlers have a notification function when the temperature is ready to go. They usually signal this by the tip of the heater or a part of the rubber handle changing color. These are highly convenient since you can tell at a glance when it has warmed up and is ready to be used.

Curlers without any notification require the user to check the temperature by holding it near the hand or touching it, which can be unsafe and unclear.

Curlers With Adjustable Heat Settings Allow For More Flexibility

Curlers With Adjustable Heat Settings Allow For More Flexibility

Curlers equipped with a temperature control function allow you to freely change your curled lashes' angle, shape, and look.

Using a low-temperature mode (around 104-149°F) is best when you want to gently shape your lashes or create a natural curl. It allows for a moderate curl and is less likely to damage lashes, making it ideal for beginners and for when you want to reduce the risk of damaging your lashes.

The high-temperature mode of 167°F or higher is suitable for when you want to create a precise, fancy curl or when you want to lock the curls in shape.

Naoko Shinohara
Hair and Makeup ArtistNaoko Shinohara

Higher temperatures are going to curl your lashes with a shape that will keep for longer, but as a downside are also more likely to damage your lashes so I recommend not taking too long on this setting.

A heat set at around 158~176°F should give you no problems when shaping your lashes.

For Stick-Type Curlers, a Cleaning Brush Makes For Easy Maintenance

For Stick-Type Curlers, a Cleaning Brush Makes For Easy Maintenance

Generally speaking, heated eyelash curlers cannot be washed with water. Mascara and eye shadow stains, if left on the heater and rubber parts of the curler, can make the heat less likely to transfer to your lashes. This is why an ideal heated eyelash curler should be easy to wash.

Stick-type models with minimal grooves on the heater are easier to be cleaned, especially if it has a cleaning brush as an accessory, even if not, you shouldn't have much trouble finding a tool to clean them.

Since the curler type does not come with a dedicated cleaning tool, you should pay attention to the shape of the curler, checking whether it has a simple structure that is easy to wipe clean.

③ Rechargeable? Or Battery-Powered? Choose Based on When/Where You Need It

Among heated eyelash curlers, there are two types of power supplies, those that are battery-powered and those that come with a rechargeable battery equipped. Choose one based on operating costs, as well as when/where you'll need to use them.

Rechargeable Types Have Lower Running Costs And Last Longer

Rechargeable Types Have Lower Running Costs And Last Longer

The most significant advantage of the rechargeable types is their low running cost since batteries are not needed. It can be used immediately by simply recharging when not in use, making them suitable for people who want to use it for a long time.

On the other hand, since a USB cable and power supply are required for charging, it can be difficult to deal with sudden battery failure when you are out. If you want to use it for fixing your lashes when you are out and about, it is a good idea to check how long the battery will last on a single charge and how long it can be used continuously.

Battery-Operated Types Have Higher Running Costs But Are Dependable For When You are Out and About

Battery-Operated Types Have Higher Running Costs But Are Dependable For When You are Out and About

Battery-powered types can be more dependable when you are out and about, since you can simply replace the batteries when they run out of power. Making them good for use when traveling as well as when you are at home.

However, the downside is that since you will have to keep purchasing batteries to re-power them, over time the running costs can add up when compared to rechargeable types

Creates Long-Lasting Curls, Well Over 8 Hours!

Angelique’s Eyelash Curler is a curler-type device, shaped like a manual eyelash curler, which allows you to curl your eyelashes with a light pinch. Another selling point of this product is that the heat can be turned on with the touch of a button.

Lashes in the middle of the eyelash were perfectly lifted with this curler but a few fine areas towards the end of the outer corner didn't get lifted as much. The curls lasted for the full 8 hours without any drooping retaining its shape for which this product received a perfect score.

We didn’t feel the heat to be excessive at all, and there was a light that illuminates the eye area for better vision when curling. One down side was that the curler's narrow width made it somewhat difficult to pinch the lashes at the  corners of the lashes. As well as the fact that there was no signal for when the curler is heated so you have to check for yourself.

The heating time is short and the curler is easy to clean. Overall, this curler has excellent lash curling power creating sky-high lashes that last all day.

ANLANANLAN Electric Heated Eyelash Curler JMJ01

Curler that Fits Any Eye Shape

ANLAN's Electric Heated Eyelash Curler is a stick-type curler that lifts lashes with a slightly curved heater.

In our tests for finish, this curler couldn't give lashes the highest lift overall, same with the lashes at the outer corner of the eye, for which it received an average rating. However, curls produced by this held their shape throughout the day with little to no drooping after eight hours.

The heater's curve is excellently designed and fits all eye shapes from the root to the tips of the lashes. However, it gets quite hot and the lashes were heated to the point where we are worried about potential risk of burns, so be extra cautious of the heat.

As for functionality, the heating time is short and you can easily know when the curler is ready to use. The device has a simple structure and comes with a cleaning brush for easy maintenance.

No.3

AlplusHot Eyelash Curler

Brand New 2-in-1 Model that Grips&Lifts Lashes

The AIplus’s Hot Eyelash Curler is a 2-in-1 heated curler that combines an iron heater and comb-type heater.

This product works by gripping and then lifting the lashes creating a natural C-shaped curl. However, our testers said it wasn’t quite strong enough for sky-high lashes. That being said, curls created by this device lasted for 8 hours, keeping the same lift all day long.

The combination of the iron heater was innovative but that didn’t make the curling any easier, with our testers saying that it is hard to pinch the lashes of the eye opposite to their dominant hand. On the positive side, it didn't get too hot, the heating time was short, and its easy to tell when the curler is ready. However, the two different types of heaters made it somewhat time-consuming to clean.

Creates a Mild, Natural C-shaped Curl

Panasonic’s Matsuge Kurun Natural Curl is a stick-type curler that creates natural C-shaped lashes with a double heater.

The overall lift of the lashes was a little lacking, but as the name suggests, it was able to create a natural looking curl. Even after 8 hours, the lashes hardly drooped and they kept their same gentle shape.

The zigzag pattern of the heater could fit the lashes nicely, but the heater got a little too hot. In terms of functionality, it took about 1 to 2 minutes for the heating time which is quite long. The complex construction of the heater made it collect dirt easier which was another drawback. The temperature indicator on the back of the device changes to a bright pink color, making it easy to tell when the curler is ready.

Creates Sky-High Lashes with Ease

Hitachi’s Eye Crie Hot Eyelash Curler is a curler-type heated curler that grips lashes with a heating pad.

In our test, some lashes got bent and we couldn’t form a perfect C-curl, but it did raise lashes quickly from the roots to the tips. This curler is great for creating sky-high lashes, or cute idol-like eyes. However, the curls were not long-lasting, not maintaining their shape over time with the roots  noticeably drooping.

The curler scored high points in terms of functionality, with the one-touch heating button, and we didn't feel any excess heat when the lashes were clamped. It heats up in only 10 seconds and cleaning was also easy. However, the fact that you have to check the proper temperature with your own hands was a drawback.

Creates Cute Dolly Eyes but Hard to Curl the Corners of Lashes

Hollywood Eyes' Hot Eyelash Curler is a stick-type curler that can be even used for the lashes with eyelash perms or extensions.

Although we couldn’t lift the lashes at the outer corner of the eyes very well, overall the curler created a nice upward curl, for doll-like lashes. However, it wasn’t long-lasting and the outer corner lashes drooped significantly, resulting in an unbalanced look.

The heater is thick all the way to the tip, so while it is easy to lift the roots of the lashes, we can’t say the same thing for the lashes in the finer areas. Also, the heater gets quite hot, so be extra cautious on the heat. However, this product has high functionality, with a short heating time, a signal on the back of the heater to check temperature, and coming with a cleaning brush for easy cleaning.

No.7

PanasonicAmyure Eyelash Curler EH2385P

Curler with a Fine Tooth Comb

Panasonic's Amyure Eyelash Curler comes with a fine tooth comb.

In our test, the lashes at the outer corner of the eye didn't get curled as much and the lift was lacking overall, so it cannot create an upward sky-high curl. However, it lasted the whole day, with the lashes holding the same shape after 8 hours.

The comb's fineness and width made it easy to clasp lashes but it got so hot to the point where we were afraid to use it to the roots of our lashes. As for functionality, the heating time is not too long, and the curler is designed such that you can easily check the temperature. However, since the comb is so fine, you will need to clean it frequently with a brush to keep it clean.

Time Consuming, Finished Curl is So-So

FESTINO’s Hot Eyelash Curler is a stick-type curler with a thick, easy-to-grip handle.

It curled the lashes consistently without any unevenness, but couldn’t quite lift the lashes enough so the finish was so-so. The center part drooped slightly over time but it wasn't too noticeable.

The heater didn’t get too hot but it was hard to lift the lashes in fine areas such as the corners of the eye. In terms of functionality, the heating time of the high-temperature mode took long, taking 180 seconds, and it was hard to tell when the curler reached the heat, so we don't recommend it for when you are in a hurry. The comb is relatively easy to clean since it is pretty straight and comes with a cleaning brush.

No.9

HitachiEYE CRiE Eyelash Curler HR-530-PV

One Step Short of a Beautiful Upward Curl

Hitachi’s EYE CRiE Eyelash Curler is a stick-type hot curler with two types of heaters and a comb.

It was hard to curl the lashes at the outer corners of the eye, falling one step short of a perfect upward curl. It also wasn’t long-lasting and the outer corner lashes drooped significantly, but maintained the overall balance so it wasn't too noticeable

When it comes to the feel of use, there were mixed opinions among our testers. Some said the curler is easy to pinpoint the areas of the lashes you want to lift but others said it’s hard as it gets a little too hot. Which might have something to do with the eye shape of the users and whether they have used a stick-type curler before. The heating time is long and the temperature indicator is small. There is also a small gap between the device and electric heating wire so it isn’t very easy to clean.

No.10

Yazawa CorporationHold Type Eyelash Curler CH205PK

High Functionality but Couldn’t Lift Lashes Very Well

Yazawa's Hold Type Eyelash Curler is a hot curler that uses a heat pad to evenly lift lashes.

However, there was some noticeable inconsistencies and unevenness between lashes. Though it requires some technique, we recommend this product most people with monolid eyes. The curl wasn’t long-lasting and the lashes at the outer corner of the eye drooped to nearly flat and the overall balance of the curl was lost.

Although we had to apply some force to push up the lever to turn the heat on, it couldn’t curl as firmly as other curler-type products did. But it scored higher points for its functionality: There was no uncomfortable excessive heat and the heating time was short. The temperature indicator was also easy to see and the curler was easy to clean.

How We Tested the Heated Eyelash Curlers

We gathered the 32 best-selling Japanese heated eyelash curlers from Amazon, Rakuten and Yahoo! Shopping and then tested them all.

We tested each product for the following:

  • Finish
  • Keep
  • Feel
  • Functionality

Test ① Finish

Test ① Finish

First, we tested one of the most important factors in selecting a heated eyelash curler, the finished look of the curled eyelashes.

We tested each heated eyelash curler, applying them to the base of the lashes for 5 seconds and from the center to the tips for 5 seconds each to curl it. Our hair and makeup artist Naoko Shinohara reviewed the results.

We gave a perfect score of 5.0 to the products that, from a professional's perspective, created a beautiful C-shaped curl.

Test ② Keep

Test ② Keep

There is no point in using a heated eyelash curler if your lashes don't remain curled for long enough. That is why we tested how long lashes curled by each product could keep their shape.

We applied clear mascara to a set of false lashes and stuck them on a clear cup. We then used the curlers, applying them to the base of the lashes for 5 seconds and from the center to the tips for 5 seconds each to curl it. After that, we stuck the transparent cup to a wall and left them there for 8 hours. Then we rated the devices on a scale of 0 to 5, with 5 being the perfect score for curlers producing curled lashes that kept their shape for 8 hours

Test ③ Feel

Test ③ Feel

To achieve stunning, sky-high lashes, the ideal curler would need to be easy to use and be able to curl even the most minor details, such as the corners of the lashes. Safety is another factor that must be considered, such as whether the curler gets a little too hot and could potentially cause burns.

For this test, we had three testers each with mono-lid, double, and inner-double-eyelids use each product to check for the following points:

  • How easy it was to use the product when curling lashes
  • The curler’s heat levels

Test ④ Functionality

Test ④ Functionality

Finally, we tested the functionality of each product by having three of our testers use the products to check for the following points: heating time, heating completion signaling, and ease in cleaning the devices.

Tips on How to Best Use a Heated Eyelash Curler

It can be a pain to redo the curls for your lashes, so it can be a big time-saver to learn how to get them right on your first try. Here we will outline some tips on best using both the curler and stick-type curlers for the best looking curl.

With Curler Types, Start From the Root, Move Towards the Tips, and Finish With Mascara

With Curler Types, Start From the Root, Move Towards the Tips, and Finish With Mascara

When using the curler type, curl lashes first and then finish with mascara to prevent them from sticking together.

1. Clamp the lashes starting from the middle and hold for 3 seconds. If the lashes at the inner and outer corners of the eye don't fit easily in the curler, slant the curler at an angle to create a "C" shape and pinch the lashes similarly.
2. Lift the curler up at the base of the lashes with your fingers and let it cool to let the curl finish.
3. Clamp the lashes in the middle and at the tips for about 1 second each. Do the same for the inner corner of the eye and the outer corner of the eye.

4. Once lashes are cooled, apply mascara base and then mascara.

5. If you wish to separate the lashes, comb through the lashes to finish.

Naoko Shinohara
Hair and Makeup ArtistNaoko Shinohara

Since the shape of the lashes will become fixed as the heat cools, a cooling process is necessary for the best-lasting curling.

If the above steps do not give enough lift to your lashes, try applying a colorless curl-holding primer first and let it dry thoroughly before curling. The key is to use a colorless primer because using a black primer will create noticeable clumps of mascara.

With Stick-Types, First Curl the Lashes at the Base, and Then Shape the Rest To Your Liking

With Stick-Types, First Curl the Lashes at the Base, and Then Shape the Rest To Your Liking

When using a stick-type curler, apply primer and mascara on the lashes first, then use the curler.

1. Apply mascara primer and mascara to lashes and let dry
2. Apply the heater to the base of the lashes for 5 seconds to firmly raise the lashes.

3. Gently move the heater to the tip of the lashes to create the curl you desire.

4. If lashes are sticking together or there are clumps, hold the comb vertically and wiggle the tip of the comb tip to break up clumps and separate lashes from each other.

Naoko Shinohara
Hair and Makeup ArtistNaoko Shinohara

When you want your eyelash curls to really pop from the base, try using the curler before you apply mascara

Like the curler-type, using the stick-type curler to raise the base and then letting them cool before moving on is another effective method.

When to Use a Heated Eyelash Curler – Warnings

The most important thing to remember when using a heated eyelash curler is to avoid burning your eyelids. Some products have heaters that get pretty hot, so be careful not to accidentally apply them directly to your eyelids.

For curler types, lightly pinch them before applying them to your eyelid to make sure it does not hurt or feel too hot.

For the stick-type, it is important to use it at an angle that allows you to see the heated part. To raise the base of the lashes, hold a mirror to give you a line of vision, and apply the heater from an angle that allows you to see the hairline. When moving from the center to the tips of the lashes, hold the mirror directly in front of you.
