How to Choose Bug Zappers

When choosing a bug zapper, first consider whether you need one for indoor or outdoor use. Think about what type of bugs you want to keep at bay, various power source options, and safety features.

① Determine Whether You'll Use the Bug Zapper Indoors or Outdoors

Determine Whether You'll Use the Bug Zapper Indoors or Outdoors

Indoor and outdoor bug zappers differ in terms of the range of weather conditions they can withstand. Outdoor bug zappers are built to stand up against moisture from precipitation, wind, and harsh sunlight.

These bug zappers can also attract bugs from a wider range to help cover a larger area, such as a yard, because they're usually bigger with a sizeable collection tray.

The types of lights in indoor and outdoor models can also differ. For instance, indoor bug zappers may contain white UV lights versus the purple or purple-bluish lights seen in outdoor models. While outdoor models can be designed to hang from eaves, porches, and pergolas, indoor versions can be wall-mounted or sit on a countertop.

Some outdoor zappers resemble solar lights and come with a stake that you can insert around a walkway, patio, or garden bed and other landscaping. You can also find bug zappers that can be used both indoors or outdoors.

② Think About What Type of Bugs You Want to Keep Away

Think About What Type of Bugs You Want to Keep Away

Bug zappers use light to attract insects and eliminate them. Bug zappers designed for indoor and outdoor use can contain enough power and light (40 watts) to attract various types of insects. This can include houseflies, moths, gnats and wasps.

However, a lot of the insects that the light attracts do not bite or feed on humans. If you’re concerned about keeping mosquitoes and biting insects away, you may want a bug zapper with bait

Octenol is a chemical in human sweat and breath that mosquitoes are attracted to. This bait is placed inside the bug zapper’s collection tray and can last for up to three months. It’s the bait’s job to lure the mosquitoes into the proximity of the bug zapper and then the electricity takes care of the rest.

③ Evaluate Your Power Source Options

Evaluate Your Power Source Options

The majority of bug zappers need to be plugged in. If you’re hanging it or using an outdoor model, check the availability of electric outlets. This will often limit the placement of the bug zapper.

To extend your outdoor placement options, you can consider using an outdoor-rated extension cord. You’ll also want to ensure you can place the cord in a way that doesn’t create a tripping or safety hazard for you, your guests, or your pets.

You might also consider solar-powered options if you want to place bug zappers in areas that are farther away from an electrical outlet. However, these will need to be placed in an area that gets plenty of sunlight. These models can be more decorative in nature and resemble solar lights or lamp posts.

Other models, usually smaller ones, rely on regular batteries. This can be more convenient, either indoors or outdoors. You’ll increase the number of places you can set the bug zapper and won’t have to worry about cords draping down or running over surfaces.

You can also take some of these models on camping trips. However, there is the additional expense of replacement batteries and proper disposal of used ones.

④ Consider Protective Layers and Range

Consider Protective Layers and Range

The larger the range of the bug zapper, which is usually listed in the specifications, the brighter the light will be. This also means the light will be stronger to attract more insects from wider distances and increase the risk of shock.

You’ll want to ensure there is enough of a protective layer or guard over the UV light source in the bug zapper. This will prevent you and others from direct exposure and the potential for electric shock. Better protective covers or cages can guard against children and pets being able to fit objects between the openings in the wires.

Some bug zappers are handheld and resemble a small tennis racket or fly swatter. You’ll also want to ensure there is some type of protective cover over the UV light portion of these to prevent shock.
