How We Tested the Products

Scroll to testing method
We gathered the 8 bestselling Diaper Bags and put them through rigorous testing.
  1. Capacity

    Test① Capacity

We first tested storage capacity, the most important aspect of a diaper bag. We picked out items for both parents and babies that you might take when going out. Then we confirmed exactly how much we could pack into each diaper bag. For diaper bags with leftover space, we checked to see how many half-liter water bottles we could fit. The more we could pack, the higher the rating. These are the things we tried to pack.Necessities for babiesThree diapers, wet wipes, a changing mat, a change of clothes, a baby bottle, formula, a water bottle, a bib, a sippy cup and straw, a privacy nursing cover, three toys, two snacks, a swaddling band, and gauzeItems for parentsWallet, keys, cellphone, a small pouch, and sunglasses

  2. Organization

    Test② Organization

We tested for organization next. We checked over the followed points and gave higher ratings to diaper bags that have an easy-to-pack design.Does it have a lot of pockets?Does the diaper bag open wide? How long is its gusset? Can it stand on its own?

  3. Ease of Use

    Test③ Ease of Use

We followed this by testing each diaper bag for ease of use. We tested to see how easy it was to take out and put back all the items we packed during capacity testing. The smoother this process went, the higher the rating that was assigned.

  4. Ergonomics

    Test④ Ergonomics

We then tested whether each diaper bag was ergonomically designed to avoid strain on the wearer's body. We had six product reviewers carry diaper bags filled with the previously mentioned items. Four reviewers were between 4 foot 11 inches to 5 foot 3 inches tall, and the two others were between 5 foot 3 inches tall to 5 foot 7 inches tall. Diaper bags were rated highly if they put little strain on the body and were easy to move with. Evaluations were based on the following points. How much weight was put on the shoulders? How stable did it feel to walk with?Did it hug the body or swing around?

  5. Construction

    Test⑤ Construction

Last up, we asked specialist Hikaru Fukasawa to inspect the construction of each diaper bag.The following three points were tested for.Is the fabric material strong? How carefully was it sewn together? Was it designed in a special way to increase durability?

Couldn't I Just Use a Regular Bag Instead of a Diaper Bag?

You might be wondering if you really need a diaper bag. Couldn't you just use that backpack or tote bag you already have sitting in your closet?

Diaper Bags Are Easier to Organize and Have Lots of Room

Diaper Bags Are Easier to Organize and Have Lots of Room

Diaper bags differ from a typical bag because of their high capacity and functionality.

Diaper bags can store belongings neatly, as they are made with many pockets and dividers to find and take out what you need with no trouble. Perhaps the bag you have now is good enough if you're just tossing your stuff inside. However, the many products designed and sold as diaper bags come equipped with bottle holders, special pouches to store changing pads and accessories, and are made assuming you'll be out and about with a baby and all the things they need.

Especially considering the large amount of supplies needed during a child's infancy, a bag made specifically for that use will be better than a general-purpose bag.

What Types of Diaper Bags Are Available?

What Types of Diaper Bags Are Available?

There are three main types of diaper bags: backpacks, messenger bags, and tote bags. Each style has its own distinct features, so visualize how you go about a normal day when choosing the one for you.

Out of these three types, we recommend a backpack type for your first diaper bag. The biggest benefit to a backpack diaper bag is that both of your hands will be free to take care of your baby. The weight will be evenly distributed on both shoulders, which means you won't get tired as easily. We believe a backpack type is a must-have for anyone that's on the move quite often and for long periods of time.

A messenger bag will also keep both of your hands free and makes it easy to take out anything you need. However, they put strain on only one shoulder, and unless the inside is made with plenty of pockets and dividers, your contents can end up a mess.

Tote bags are great for their wide opening to take out what you need quickly. Many of them have large capacities, so you can pack several days' worth of clothes and diapers when travelling. But they put strain on only one shoulder, tend to slip off easily, and limit movement.

There are even some diaper bags that turn into either a backpack, messenger bag, or tote bag depending on how you attach the included strap. Although there aren't many variations of this kind available, if you want something you can adjust, we recommend you check it out. We focused on backpack types this time to conduct comparative testing.

How to Choose a Diaper Bag - Buying Guide

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Diaper Bags.

① Choose Something That Holds a Lot and Is Easy to Use, Like Our Top Choice, BabbleRoo

The most basic requirement of a good diaper bag is the ability to store every essential item. Even ease of organization and use are also important factors. The diaper bag that we ranked number one for having great capacity, easy organization, and fantastic ease of use was BabbleRoo's diaper bag. We'll explain why this is our top recommendation.

A Bag That's Wide Enough Can Hold Many Necessities

A Bag That's Wide Enough Can Hold Many Necessities

When we tested capacity, we were able to pack five half-liter plastic bottles on top of the 24 standard childcare necessities we picked out. This diaper bag is convenient not only for bringing along the essentials, but also for storing any purchases when shopping.

Five out of the eight diaper bags tested under these same conditions were able to pack the 24 necessities, but there were only two diaper bags that could fit two or more additional plastic bottles. Meanwhile, the diaper bag that could store the least was full after packing 21 of the necessities we prepared for capacity testing. This means it couldn't fit any of the larger items.

Choose the largest capacity possible, since children under the age of one in particular require numerous supplies.

Packing and Organization Are Made Easy With Many Pockets

Packing and Organization Are Made Easy With Many Pockets

BabbleRoo's diaper bag comes with a generous number of pockets and partitions. It was easy to organize, using the 13 internal and five external pockets. Among these pockets are storage spaces designed exclusively for must-have items, including three insulated pockets for bottles and a pocket made for wet wipes.

The compartments are also large enough to easily pack away a parent's belongings. There are mesh pockets inside for easy-to-lose smaller items. The average number of pockets among our tested products was about 12, with eight pockets being the lowest. Because the number of items needed for young children is large, a bag like BabbleRoo's with its bountiful number and types of pockets is recommended.

A Wide Opening and Spacious Bottom Makes It Easier to Use

A Wide Opening and Spacious Bottom Makes It Easier to Use

Choose a diaper bag that opens up wide to find what's needed with a mere glance. Through testing, it was found that if the base of a diaper bag is spacious, it'll be able to store belongings without stacking them too high. This prevents the contents from getting buried deep, which makes them easier to move around when looking for what's needed.

It's even better if a diaper bag can stand on its own, as it'll make it more convenient and smoother to take out what you need without holding it up. The bag by BabbleRoo opens wide, stands on its own, and is a good example of what to look for in a diaper bag.

② Look for Cushioned Shoulder Straps 2 Inches Wide or More

Look for Cushioned Shoulder Straps 2 Inches Wide or More

A diaper bag can get really heavy when it's packed with all the necessities for an outing. Pick the widest shoulder strap possible to reduce strain on your body. A diaper bag's weight will then be dispersed, rather than being focused on a single spot on the shoulders, to reduce fatigue. Reduce the stress on the body even more with a thick shoulder strap for better cushioning.

The top ranking ergonomic diaper bags from our tests were the Carson Pass by Columbia and the Cascade by Eddie Bauer. The shoulder straps are wide and thick on both, and our product reviewers viewed them positively, saying, "My shoulder felt very little weight, as the weight was evenly spread out, which made moving around a breeze." Meanwhile, the lower ranked options received some comments that narrow and thin shoulder straps on diaper bags dug into the shoulders and caused discomfort.

③ Prevent Wear With Strong Fabric, Reinforced Shoulder Straps, and Fortified Fabric Ends

Prevent Wear With Strong Fabric, Reinforced Shoulder Straps, and Fortified Fabric Ends

A diaper bag filled with many childcare necessities will be used for years, so pick one with the strongest design possible.

The first thing to check is the strength of the main fabric and how it was constructed. A thicker fabric that includes a proper lining will increase the durability of a diaper bag. Shoulder straps, which bear the burden of a diaper bag's weight, with reinforced with stitching are best. Fabric edges with piping can resist fraying and provide better peace of mind thanks to greater resiliency.

Kensuke Higuchi
Former baby gear sales; mybest Head of Baby GearKensuke Higuchi

Be sure to check how smoothly a diaper bag's zipper shuts if checking out the many options in person. We recommend diaper bags with zippers that glide smoothly along the curves of a bag. Play it safe by avoiding anything that doesn't zip well, as the zipper teeth can degrade over time, which means the zipper is at higher risk of breaking.

mybest's Top Choice! Holds a Lot, Has Plenty of Pockets, and Won't Put Too Much Strain on Your Body

This diaper bag by BabbleRoo is a backpack type that comes with its own changing mat and a removable pacifier holder. In our capacity test, it was able to store all the items we needed, and could even fit an additional seven plastic bottles. It has lots of room, not only for the numerous baby supplies infants need, but also for items you might pick up while you're out. You can organize childcare items in a neat way with 18 pockets.

This bag opens wide, which makes it easy to see the inside from above, and the spacious bottom lets you swiftly retrieve what's needed when it's needed. This diaper bag has a good ergonomic design, as test results showed the shoulder straps are wide and thick, which made it comfortable to wear. Our product reviewers saw this positively by saying, "It never really dug into my shoulders and the weight was distributed well."

There are no shortcomings in terms of the construction, since it's made using a solid and thick fabric. The only fault was how nothing special was included in the design to increase durability. As it comes with a large storage capacity and is easy to use, this diaper bag should be a top candidate if you're struggling to choose one.

Evenly Distributed Weight That Feels Light on Your Back, and Large Storage Capacity

The Morgan diaper backpack by Fisher-Price is made using a quilted fabric material. It comes with its own changing pad that features the same pattern and lining. We tested the capacity of this bag and found it could fit every item we readied beforehand, as well as one half-liter water bottle. It can also fit some purchases you might make while out shopping. It'll be really easy to organize belongings with the included 12 pockets, which is a large number compared to other bags.

This diaper bag opens wide and has a spacious base, and we could see everything inside and find what we needed with ease. It got high ratings for ergonomics due to the wide shoulder straps with cushioning. Our product reviewers had great things to say, such as, "It felt stable to walk while wearing it because of the evenly balanced weight, so it didn't really feel painful on my shoulders."

It is well constructed, as it features a good lining and is made using a sturdy fabric. Overall, however, it lacks any special features meant to increase durability. In addition to plenty of storage space, it even does great for ease of use. It ranked superior for ergonomic design to minimize bodily strain, and should be highly considered if you'll be on the move for long periods of time.

Holds a Lot and Lets You Take Out What You Need With Ease

The Forma diaper bag is a backpack by Skip*Hop. It includes a changing mat and two handy pouches to store baby bottles and smaller items. It was able to pack away everything we prepared for the capacity test, and even fit two half-liter plastic bottles. There will be no issues if you need to stuff more in it besides your baby supplies.

We found it somewhat lacking during our organization test, since it only comes with eight pockets. Regardless, it's easy to use and pull out what's needed, since this diaper bag can open up wide and has an expansive base to see everything inside from up top. It did favorably in our test for ergonomic design, as the soft, cushioned shoulder strap felt comfortable to wear. There were many positive comments from our product reviewers, who stated, "The shoulder strap fit so well and had stability, even while I moved around a lot." It'll feel more convenient to take care of active toddlers while wearing this diaper bag.

It received lower ratings for construction, though, as the exterior fabric material is slightly thin, and the ends of the shoulder straps aren't reinforced. There was nothing special done to give it any special reinforcement, so this diaper bag may wear down if used without care.

Easy on Your Shoulders, but Not the Best for Usability

The Cascade diaper bag by Eddie Bauer is a backpack type that includes a front buckle to keep belongings secure. It comes with its own changing pad. We were able to put everything we prepared for the capacity test inside this diaper bag, and even fit an additional plastic bottle too. It can handle packing a couple small things that might be bought when out of the house. It's not lacking for pockets with 12 included, but the base of this bag is narrow, and overall it's more vertical. Trying to pull anything out of the bottom was somewhat troublesome.

This diaper bag did rank highly for its ergonomic design, as the shoulder straps were both sufficiently wide and cushioned. We received positive remarks from our product reviewers, who said, "It really didn’t cause my shoulders too much pain, because the straps were nice and thick." This diaper bag is best suited for anyone on the move that'll need to wear it for a long time. We had no issues with this diaper bag's construction, due to it using a comparatively strong fabric, having reinforced straps, and even having piping on it.

Pockets in Abundance for Easy Organization, but Restricts Movement

The BFF diaper bag by JuJuBe can be used in two different ways: as a backpack or messenger bag. The entire bag is also machine-washable, which is convenient. It's useful for organizing various smaller goods, with 16 pockets. You can look over the contents with ease, as this bag opens wide, and quickly to pull out what you need.

However, two of the items we picked out wouldn't fit inside during capacity testing. It won't be easy to fit any bulky clothing or bigger toys. This diaper bag may not be the best fit for the infancy stage, when a diaper bag is typically filled with a lot of necessities.

Ergonomic testing showed no concern over the cushioned straps, but it doesn't fit very well and felt like it could slip off easily. We received a negative comment from our product reviewer, who said, "I felt my movement was limited, as it feels like it was falling off when I was walking." It got great ratings for how well constructed it is, though, using strong fabric materials, proper reinforcement at the ends of the shoulder straps, and good piping. We believe this diaper bag will last a long time compared to others.

Great Storage Capacity, but Some Worry Over Its Construction

This diaper bag by Movsou is a backpack type. When you open up the zipper and set it up using the included parts, you can make this diaper bag transform into a crib that's great for a nap or for diaper changes. It was able to hold every item we readied during capacity testing, which resulted in high ratings. This diaper bag couldn't fit anything extra, but we think it has plenty of space for a one-day outing. It's easy to check what's inside with how wide this bag opens and the spacious bottom to grab what's required with ease.

It only has nine pockets, so there may be difficulty when organizing the diaper bag's contents. But positive comments really stood out during ergonomic testing, such as, "It fit really well, and felt properly stable as I moved around." It's made using a relatively thick fabric material, and the shoulder straps are also reinforced. However, because the shoulder straps felt like they weren't sewn on well, they could be subject to excessive stress easily and have a risk of breaking.

Reinforced, Strong Construction, but Lacks Storage Capacity

The Classic Diaper Bag II by Freshly Picked is designed to be worn as either a backpack or a messenger bag. This diaper bag is distinct for the design's high class feel and uses a vegan leather material and gold colored metals for parts like the zipper. It'll be easy to neatly organize childcare necessities, since this diaper bag comes with 11 pockets.

Although this bag has a spacious bottom and opens wide to see everything inside, the leather material's inflexible nature affects ease of use by making it harder to take out any belongings that fall to the bottom. All but two of our the prepared items were able to fit inside this diaper bag during the test for capacity. This diaper bag won't be great for an infant, when many childcare essentials need to be carried, as fitting in a bulky change of clothes or multiple larger toys will be a challenge.

It got low ratings for ergonomic design due to the thin shoulder straps not having the best cushioning. Our product testers had many negatives things to say, such as, "The straps dug into my shoulders and were not comfortable to wear." The shoulder straps, which bear most of the diaper bag's weight, do come reinforced and have piping on them. The bottom of the bag also comes with padding, and the bottom of the bag's exterior has metal feet attached to prevent scrapes.

Ergonomic Design Makes It Easy to Wear, but Capacity Is Insufficient

The Carson Pass diaper backpack by outdoor brand Colombia features mesh lining on the back of the bag and the underside of the shoulder pads. It comes with its own dedicated changing pad. There were three leftover items we prepared that wouldn't fit during capacity testing. Since the bulkier items like large toys and a change of clothes wouldn't fit, we couldn't give it high scores here.

It has 13 pockets, a comparatively large number, to neatly separate items. However, this diaper bag doesn't open very wide and the bottom is narrow, so we weren't able to see all of our packed goods from the top very well, and also feel it won't be the easiest to use. We think it has a great ergonomic design due to the wide shoulder straps that come with thick padding for a comfortable feel. Our reviewers had mostly good things to say, such as, "The shoulder straps are large, which helps evenly distribute the bag's weight and made walking a breeze."

This diaper bag's fabric material isn't very strong, and the shoulder strap ends, which bear the most weight, aren't reinforced. This means that there's a chance this diaper bag may not last very long.

We performed tests to find out the following.

  • How much does it hold?
  • Can you easily organize all of your belongings?
  • Is it easy to use?
  • Is the design ergonomic?
  • Is it well-constructed?

Products we tested

Test① Capacity

Capacity
We first tested storage capacity, the most important aspect of a diaper bag. We picked out items for both parents and babies that you might take when going out. Then we confirmed exactly how much we could pack into each diaper bag. For diaper bags with leftover space, we checked to see how many half-liter water bottles we could fit. The more we could pack, the higher the rating.

These are the things we tried to pack.

  • Necessities for babies
Three diapers, wet wipes, a changing mat, a change of clothes, a baby bottle, formula, a water bottle, a bib, a sippy cup and straw, a privacy nursing cover, three toys, two snacks, a swaddling band, and gauze

  • Items for parents
Wallet, keys, cellphone, a small pouch, and sunglasses

Test② Organization

Organization
We tested for organization next. We checked over the followed points and gave higher ratings to diaper bags that have an easy-to-pack design.

  • Does it have a lot of pockets?
  • Does the diaper bag open wide?
  • How long is its gusset?
  • Can it stand on its own?

Test③ Ease of Use

Ease of Use

We followed this by testing each diaper bag for ease of use. We tested to see how easy it was to take out and put back all the items we packed during capacity testing. The smoother this process went, the higher the rating that was assigned.

Test④ Ergonomics

Ergonomics
We then tested whether each diaper bag was ergonomically designed to avoid strain on the wearer's body. We had six product reviewers carry diaper bags filled with the previously mentioned items. Four reviewers were between 4 foot 11 inches to 5 foot 3 inches tall, and the two others were between 5 foot 3 inches tall to 5 foot 7 inches tall. Diaper bags were rated highly if they put little strain on the body and were easy to move with.

Evaluations were based on the following points.

  • How much weight was put on the shoulders?
  • How stable did it feel to walk with?
  • Did it hug the body or swing around?

Test⑤ Construction

Construction
Last up, we asked specialist Hikaru Fukasawa to inspect the construction of each diaper bag.

The following three points were tested for.

  • Is the fabric material strong?
  • How carefully was it sewn together?
  • Was it designed in a special way to increase durability?

Use Extreme Caution if Hanging a Diaper Bag From the Handles of a Stroller

Use Extreme Caution if Hanging a Diaper Bag From the Handles of a Stroller

It's pretty common to see people hanging a bag on the handles of a baby stroller. There are even diaper bags that come with hooks made to hang them on stroller handles. However, hanging a diaper bag from these handles is actually quite dangerous. The weight of this extra luggage can cause the stroller's balance to be thrown off and cause it to tip over. In the worst case, a baby could even fall out of the stroller and get injured.

In most cases, a baby stroller will list these sorts of warnings and cautions in the instruction manual. It's best to follow the rules listed in a stroller's instruction manual, so it can be used as safely as possible.
