How to Choose Cat Beds, Bedding

Cats sleep a lot, but that doesn't mean they'll sleep anywhere. You should choose a bed that matches your style, but it's also important to consider other factors like the size of your cat, the season, the location you plan to put it, and how it can be cleaned.

1

Big Cats Need Sturdy Beds, but Not Necessarily Bigger Ones

Big Cats Need Sturdy Beds, but Not Necessarily Bigger Ones

Male cats tend to be bigger than females, and some breeds like Maine Coons are naturally large, too. However, cats love to squeeze themselves into impossibly small spaces, so you don't always need a bigger bed for  bigger cat.

The one exception is hanging beds, like ones that stick onto a window using suction cups, or shelf beds that attach to the wall. It's very important to check the product description and quality and make sure you install it correctly to avoid injury, a big mess, and a terrified cat.

If you have multiple pets, you may also want some big beds so they can snuggle up together!

2

Cats Love Warm Beds, but They Can Also Overheat

Cats Love Warm Beds, but They Can Also Overheat

Even in hot summer weather, you may find your cat sleeping in a sunny window or under a blanket. They can still get too hot, though, especially long-haired cats. In the winter, cats seek out heaters and may burrow in your bed. Hairless breeds like Sphinxes and older cats will need special consideration to keep them warm and toasty.

Provide Open Beds for Summer

Provide Open Beds for Summer

Cats will probably shy away from your air conditioner or fan's blowing air; it's just too cold for most. However, they can get too hot in a bed that doesn't allow air circulation and traps body heat.

Give your cat open beds without a cover. Look for less fluffy materials, like canvas or cardboard. Cool pads and aluminum beds are great, but not all cats take to them. You can also try putting some ice packs near your cat's favorite spot just to keep the ambient air temperature a bit cooler.

Make a Cozy Nest for Winter

Make a Cozy Nest for Winter

In winter you should provide beds that can trap body heat, like tents, cat caves, or sleeping bags. Choose fluffier materials such as fake fur, wool, and fleece, and place beds near heat sources (but far enough away that there's no risk of fire!)

Heating pads are available for pets too. Don't use one designed for humans, and make sure it has safety features to prevent burns or electric shock from chewing or getting wet. Microwaveable pads are an even safer choice.

3

Choose a Location Both You and Your Cat Can Agree on

You can always move beds based on the season, and if a bed isn't getting used, you can try different spots. But here are some basic rules for choosing the best location based on a cat's needs.

Cats Want a Safe Space Above All Else

Cats Want a Safe Space Above All Else

Cats are predators, but they are also small enough to be prey in the wild. So, they need to feel safe when they sleep. Definitely avoid high-traffic areas for cat beds (or food dishes and litter boxes for that matter.)

Not only will your cat feel stressed by constant commotion, but they may swipe at people's ankles or dogs who startle them as they pass by! If you have dogs or children who bother your cat, try elevated beds. The cat will feel safer because they're out of reach, and you can avoid self-defense aggression like biting and scratching.

Cats are Sensitive to Odors

Cats are Sensitive to Odors

If you have plug-in air fresheners, your cat may not want to sleep next to them. Cats especially hate the smell of citrus and may avoid beds near strong scents.

Another place to avoid is near their litter box. Although some cats sleep in their litter, this is a sign of stress and fear and doesn't mean they're happy in there. I mean, would you want to sleep near the litter box?

Keep an Eye on the Temperature Near the Bed

Keep an Eye on the Temperature Near the Bed

Cats don't like cold drafts in the winter any more than you do, so don't put their bed near a door or window. Unlike people, they also don't like cold blowing air in summer. Keep their beds out of the direct line of fans and air conditioners.

A cat will love to sleep near a heat source, but if it's an open fire or woodstove, be very careful to monitor that no embers hit their bed. Just use common sense to avoid flammable materials and keep enough space between your pet and a heater.

4

Don't Forget to Check Cleaning Requirements before You Buy

Don't Forget to Check Cleaning Requirements before You Buy

Cats are known to be very clean, but they will still need their bedding washed eventually. You should consider how you'll maintain the bed, and whether your cat has specific needs before purchase.

If your cat sometimes urinates on bedding, you'll need something that can go through the washing machine. Do you have a place to hang laundry, or do you want a bed that can go in the dryer? Some beds can only be spot cleaned. You can use a lint roller or vacuum to remove fur and dust.

If your cat has allergies, you may want to look for or avoid certain fabrics. Talk to your vet if your pet has medical conditions and should have a specific type of bed. Finally, it's better to air out a bed than to use linen sprays; some may be harmful to pets and they may not like the smell.

The Most Versatile Bed to Please Any Cat!

The great feature of this bed is that it's actually four beds in one! It can change shape to suit your pet's needs and whims.

A cat can lie on top of it in its flat shape or crawl inside the sleeping bag for a secure, warm nap. Stand it up and it changes into a cup for nesting, or turn it the other way to make a pod using the microfiber fabric instead of the faux fur.

Most reviewers said their cats loved this and that it was bigger than they expected. Several people posted photos of two cats snuggled up inside of it! Because of its versatility, this should be a great choice for every season.

A Bed with a View That's Safe and Secure

Cats love to look out windows, and they also love to sunbathe. This perch that attaches to any glass window or door with 6 suction cups is sure to become a favorite spot!

Cats can climb inside and lounge on the fleece pad or lie on top and stretch out in the sun. If you have two cats, they can use both perches at once, since it's rated to hold 60 pounds. Most reviewers said the suction cups were very strong and it was easy to hang.

You do need to measure your window to make sure you have enough space for it. Also, follow the instructions carefully to attach it securely before your cat tries to jump in.

Your Cat Can Lounge, Scratch, and Totally Claim This Bed

In recent year,s corrugated-cardboard scratchers have become ubiquitous, saving many a sofa from damage. They come in all shapes and sizes to suit any decor. Large ones that a cat can also sit on are perfect not only for maintaining their claws, but to hold a cat's scent, making them feel safe.

This one was chosen for its quality and shape. The cardboard is durable and should appeal to owners with its shape while pleasing cats with its feel. Owners can also rest assured that the product contains no toxic materials. It can be placed on the floor, and some creative people have even mounted it to their walls!

The only complaints buyers have is that it leaves little bits of cardboard from the cats' scratching, but that's a small price to pay to avoid replacing your couch!

A Sturdy, Lightweight Hammock to Fit Any Size Cat

This hammock is big enough for any size kitty, and the steel frame will hold their weight easily. It comes in this canvas model or a furry white one.

The seat attaches with hook and loop fasteners for simple removal and washing. The thing we liked best was that it's easy for the cat to jump into. Many hammocks rock or can tip and require a bit of a learning curve to use. This one should be no problem for your pet to figure out!

Even with the international shipping charge, the price is very good for this well-designed bed. However, there aren't any rubber pads on the legs, so it may be better to place it on carpet or add protection if you use it on a wood floor.

More Than a Cat Bed, it's a Conversation Piece!

This adorable novelty cat rug will be noticed by anyone who sees it! "Did your cat really kill that mouse and skin it herself?" Aside from the fun, it's highly functional. It can roll up for travel, is machine-washable, and has string whiskers that your cat will love to play with. The faux fur will be attractive to any cat.

If you want your little hunter to feel like the king of the jungle, try putting this down on the floor or your sofa, and make sure you post your cute pics to your social media accounts!

Scientifically Proven to Attract Your Cat

Yes, this is a cardboard box that comes shipped in another cardboard box. And no, we are not recommending it out of sheer irony. According to the manufacturer, "Science has proven that cats love corrugated boxes." No one will argue with that!

This particular box has several features that set it apart. It's attractive. It's made with safe materials. It's the exact size that cats like best- the Goldilocks of boxes, if you will.

It has a cutaway tab that you can remove to give your cat a place to rub its head or watch the world go by. Reviewers say there also must be some magic in it, and that you should just buy it!

An Electric Heating Pad That's Safe and Warm

For chilly nights or for older pets, a heated bed can be the difference between comfort and pain. This one has some great features for owners and their cats.

The pad is designed to be left on, but when your cat steps on it, it will quickly heat (in 3 minutes) to a higher temperature of 96 to 109℉, the body temperature of a cat. It maintains a constant temperature thanks to dual thermostats. It's flame-retardant, urine-proof, and has a cord wrapped in steel to prevent chewing.

Some buyers wished it had a temperature control feature, but most say their cats love it. All of the electric pads we found had a few negative reviews, so check the return policy in case yours arrives defective.

A Bed That Stays Cool During Hot Summers

This beautiful bed is made by Pidan, a designer of high-end pet products in Paris. The inspiration was the tranquil Zen of a Japanese rock garden.

This type of bed is not so well-known in the US, but they're great for hot summers. The aluminum is cool to the touch and can help keep your cat chill while reducing energy costs. There are other cheaper ones, but this is a better design with double walls that will stay cool longer.

However, cats like it warm, so this may not be necessary for you. Does your cat seek out cool places like bathroom sinks and tile floors on hot days? Do you have a long-haired breed? If you answered yes, give this bed a try!

A Waterproof Bed That's Easy to Care for

We don't like to talk about it, but it's a fact: some cats pee in their beds. So, we looked for a solution and found this. It's waterproof and should make it a lot easier to get that horrible smell out.

The care instructions are a bit unclear, but buyers said they usually just wipe it clean with a damp cloth. That may be enough for dog urine, but for cat pee we'd like to wash it. It should be fine to go through the machine since this is made of durable Oxford fabric, but we can't guarantee it.

Some recommend putting a softer blanket over it if your cat isn't fond of the fabric. At least it should still keep your floor dry in case of "accidents!"

Because the Best Bed is Your Lap, after All

Do you have a cat who jumps in your lap as soon as you settle down? And do you absolutely hate to make Princess Fluff move when you need a snack or to answer the doorbell? Then this hoodie is for you!

It features a large front pouch with a removable, washable lining and 2 smaller pockets for your phone and some cat treats. The extra-long sleeves have thumbholes for warmth with a sweet pawprint design.

The hood has cute cat ears and there are pom-poms that hang down for your cat to play with! However, some buyers complained that the fabric was thin, so you may want to wear an undershirt with it.

The descriptions of each product are referenced from content available on manufacturer, brand, and e-commerce sites.
