Besides choosing the right shades for you, you should also consider the palette's ingredients, formula, and features. Keep the following information in mind to pick the right palette for you!
When choosing a blush palette, make sure to choose shades that will enhance your skin tone.
People with fair skin can opt for a palette with warm peachy shades for a natural, healthy glow. Cool-toned shades of pink will work well, too. These colors can bring brightness and warmth to your face.
If you have a medium skin tone, try darker shades of pink, like deep rose or fuchsia. You can also choose orange shades with gold specks. These shades can help neutralize yellow undertones and redness.
If you have a dark skin tone, shades of terracotta and deep red-orange shades will bring a natural depth and warmth to your face. Darker blushes, like red, will truly bring the best out of your skin tone. Lighter shades will show up ashy and anything too dark can appear bruised.
Other than your skin tone, you can also choose shades according to your hair color. If you have darker hair, blush palettes with bronze and brown tones will work well. But if you have lighter hair, consider peachy and coral shades.
Choose cheek colors that look natural on the skin. For the fairer skin tones, a lighter color of blush should be used. Use colors like a light peachy apricot, soft pink, or a rosy color on the cheeks. Medium skin tones should apply a soft beige coral, and warm rosy plum colors. Darker skin tones should reach for more intense colors such as rust, orange, or berry colors.
Cheek color should create a natural effect on the face, adding back color. You want to make sure you don't apply too much color to the cheekbones or it could overwhelm the face. The goal of blush is to add back the natural warmth.
The most common blush textures are powders and creams. To pick a suitable texture, consider your skin type and the look you want to achieve.
Powder blushes are suitable for people with oily skin. The powder can absorb excess sebum and make your face matte. These are also a good option for contouring or wearing in winter since they are long-lasting. We recommended applying powder blushes with a brush.
Cream blushes, on the other hand, are great for people with dry skin since these blushes add moisture and create a dewy finish. These blushes produce a soft and natural look.
Cream blushes are also great to use during summer for a natural, sun-kissed look. However, blending them with a brush might be difficult because of their solid texture. It's better to use your fingers for blending cream blushes.
Powder products work best with powder products, and liquid/cream products work best with cream products. This means that if you were to use a powder blush, you should set the skin before with a setting powder. If you were to use a cream blush, you would apply it directly after your cream foundation to create a blended look.
Blush should apply smoothly and not create any blotches on the skin. Cream cheek colors take more time to blend and using your fingers to blend adds warmth, which avoids hard edges or streaks. Gel cheek colors add a hint of color to the face and are best when there is no powder on the skin. Gel cheek colors are water-based and can dry fast, so you have to blend quickly.
You should look for blush made with vitamins C and E since they are rich in antioxidants, helping nourish and brighten your skin. These vitamins also have hydrating and moisturizing elements suitable for people with dry skin.
You should also look for butter and oils in cream blushes, especially if you have dry skin. These natural ingredients, like cocoa butter, shea butter, and jojoba oil, will hydrate and moisturize your face.
Blushes have soluble dyes and pigments in them that give them their color. These dyes and pigments can be natural from vegetable, mineral, or artificial origin, like titanium, oxide, or zinc, all of which are FDA-approved.
Some blush palettes use natural minerals since they have elements that can protect your face from UV rays and encourage collagen production. Moreover, mineral blushes allow your skin to breathe, prevents clogged pores, and do not contain oils, making them suitable for all skin types.
You want a product that you can trust to stay on the whole day without irritating your face. To make sure your blush palette won't cause any negative effects, dermatologists suggest doing a patch test before applying it to your face.
You should also be mindful of fragrances, parabens, and sulfates, especially if you have sensitive skin. Fragrances and artificial dyes can cause allergic reactions or irritation in some people.
While there isn't concrete evidence of their harmful effects, there is concern about parabens disrupting our hormone functions. For peace of mind, some people choose to avoid parabens. However, cosmetics use small concentrations of parabens. According to the FDA, they are safe to use in tiny amounts.
Products with sulfates tend to block pores and damage your skin, especially for sensitive skin. These can also irritate your skin if they're worn for long periods of time.
Some other extra features you want to look for in a blush palette are a mirror and blush brush. A blush palette with a mirror makes applying your blush more straightforward and hassle-free. You can easily take out your palette and do touch-ups whenever and wherever.
Included applicators also make applying your blush much easier. You want to look for a slanted brush that allows you to dust your blush on your face.
Having a blush palette is great for when you need options. There are highlight colors and shadow colors. A highlight color is chosen for the center of the cheeks (apples of the cheeks). Cheek colors can be used as eye shadow colors as well. Highlight colors can be used along the top of the cheekbones to highlight the cheekbone.
Shadow colors are two to three shades darker than the center of the cheeks. Shadows accent the base of the cheekbone and define the face. Having a blush palette adds dimension as well as draws attention the face. Choosing the right color for the cheeks as well as highlighting and adding shadows will add back that natural warmth to the face.

In addition to checking our buying guide for accuracy, Natalya took the time to answer a commonly asked question about blush palettes.
Natalya explains, "The blush should be applied directly on the center of the cheeks and blended along the length of the cheekbones. The hairline to the corner of the eye is where the cheekbone is located. The blush should be applied to the center of the cheek and to the the back along the hairline."
"After choosing your cheek color, begin placement at the apples of the cheeks, working backwards to the hairline. Start off with a light application and continuously add more product to your desired blush look. Blush is very in right now and more is never too much. When using powders, load the brush and tap excess powder off. Brush the blush back and forth gently to create a smooth blended look," she says.
