You might think all liquid lipsticks look the same, but actually they're totally different! There are many little details that you have to consider before choosing one.
If you have a light skin tone, try to stick with nude, beige, coral, light pink, and raspberry. Medium skin tones look great with cherry red, wine, or orange-red. And for dark skin tones, opt for shades closer to brown, caramel, or wine.
Stick with one or two shades darker than your natural lip color for everyday wear or a natural look. If you have thin lips, try to avoid dark shades; they can make your lips looks even thinner.
Aside from your skin tone, you should determine your undertone as well. The easiest way is to check the color of the veins in your wrist. Green-looking veins indicate warm undertones while bluer or more purplish veins indicate cool undertones. If there is a mixture of both green and blue, it means you have a neutral undertone.
For cool undertones, stick with cool-toned or blue-based lipsticks like cherry, mauve, and plum. The best lipstick shades to compliment warm undertones would be warm-toned lipsticks like orange, red, and brown. Neutral undertones can pull off a wide range of shades, including both cool and warm shades.
A good liquid lipstick should be lightweight, smooth, highly pigmented, and long-wearing. Though many liquid lipsticks have a matte finish, you can also find some that offer a satin, shimmer, or sheer finish. Whichever finish you choose, make sure it's comfortable to wear.
One main concern about a matte finish is it tends to be quite heavy and dry out your lips. So, liquid lipstick might not be suitable for people who have very dry or chapped lips unless you apply a lip balm underneath to keep your lips hydrated.
It's also a good idea to consider a formula that is infused with moisturizing ingredients like vitamin E, avocado oil, shea butter, beeswax, candelilla wax, and carnauba wax to smooth your lips and prevent the colors from getting into the crevices of your lips.
Keep in mind that the key to getting a perfect finish is to prepare your lips well to create a smooth and even surface. We highly recommend you exfoliate your lips to remove the dead skin before applying liquid lipsticks.
Just like your foundation or eyeshadow, you should choose if you want more of a glowy or matte look. Whether the liquid lip has a sheer shine to it, a matte look, or a creamy finish, you want to pick the best formula for the date night or event you are attending. You want to find the finish that will brighten your smile.
If you want a youthful look, go for a sheer finish to add that glow that can make the lip look fuller. A matte finish would be a bolder and more eye-catching look, but if you have dry or chapped lips, make sure you have all of your lip prep products to make it look the best and last the longest.
Doe-foot applicators are common with liquid lipsticks. They have a slanted angle tip that fits nicely on the lips, making it easy for beginners to apply their lipstick. A curved doe-foot applicator functions the same, but the curved shape can hold more product, meaning you don't need to double-dip.
A flat doe-foot applicator is usually longer than other types of applicators. So, it helps to apply the lipstick faster and is great for people with fuller lips. On the other hand, a brush tip applicator makes a great option for precise areas like corners of the lips.
A reservoir tip has a divot in the middle, which helps to collect more product. A teardrop shape makes it easy to apply lipstick in more precise areas. With a pointed tip, it can be used as a lip liner, too!
Each lip applicator has a different shape for different uses. Choosing a lip applicator that works best for you can be a whole different thing from choosing color and formula. If you have shaky hands, it may be best to start with a lip liner and then go in with the liquid lip.
A gloss normally has a doe-foot applicator that applies evenly to the lip at an angle. A flat doe-foot applicator is an easy way to apply a quick lip in just one swipe, but it tends to be messy. It is best to start with a little product on the applicator by wiping some of the product away against the inside of the top of the tube.
A reservoir applicator is like a doe-foot tip but with a pit in the middle, allowing you to not grab too much product and to easily spread across the lip. This applicator also has a pointed end, making it easy to line the lip.
In general, liquid lipsticks have a shorter shelf life than regular lipsticks, which usually last between six to 12 months. And, they may go bad before the expiration date, depending on how you use and store them.
If your lipsticks start to have an unusual odor, change texture, or change color, it's time to throw them away. To prolong the shelf life, keep them in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight and excess heat. Also, make sure to seal the tube tightly when not in use.

In addition to reviewing and commenting on our buying guide, Natalya also took the time to answer some commonly-asked questions about liquid lipsticks.
"To apply a liquid lip perfectly takes practice and patience," says Natalya. "Start with a lip liner on the bottom lip in a similar or darker shade than your liquid lipstick. Using a sharp lip liner first to draw an outline for the shape you want will help the liquid lipstick last longer.
Then, go in with the liquid lipstick using the applicator, or transfer some product on a small flat lip brush on the bottom lip. Next, gently press your lips together so you don't smudge the lipstick over your natural lip line. Finally, fill in the top lip carefully. To fix any outline mistakes or uneven spots, clean up using a flat concealer brush and wipe away any product."
Natalya says, "Liquid lipstick can be harder to disinfect. The lip applicator can be sanitized either by spraying some 70-99% Isopropyl Alcohol, a makeup cleaner, or rinsed under warm water. Your favorite lip product can be ruined if you do not keep your lip brushes and applicators clean. No one wants to throw out any expensive makeup products, so we have to make sure we are taking care of them properly with the right steps.
Cold sores, sickness, and diseases linger on the applicator and can be easily disinfected by removing the product on the applicator with a cotton swab and spraying the alcohol on the entire lip applicator. Lastly, rinse the applicator under warm water and let it dry before putting it back in the tube. Rinsing it under water gets rid of the alcohol on the applicator and protects it from drying the product out."
The key to getting a perfect finish is to define your lip shape and prepare your lip well beforehand. Check out our other suggestions on different kinds of lip products that will help you create luscious lips.
