How to Choose a Women's Snowsuit

There are all kinds of women's snowsuits available, which can make it hard to choose the best one for you. We recommend looking for your desired fit and insulation material in addition to high waterproof and breathability ratings.

1

Consider How You Want Your Snowsuit to Fit

Snowsuits tend to come in two fits: slim or regular. Think about if you want to avoid extra bulk or prefer a little extra room to move.

Slim-Fit for a Chic Silhouette

Slim-Fit for a Chic Silhouette

A slim-fit snowsuit is both fashionable and functional. They sit close to your body, and they are excellent for skiing because they lack the bulk that would slow you down. However, these snowsuits aren’t exclusive to skiers. A slim fit is a perfect choice for anyone who wants to avoid snagging or bulk.

This fit often features a high, cinched waistline that makes your legs look longer and can flatter your figure. Slim-fit snowsuits sometimes come with belts around the waist. These belts can elevate the look of the snowsuit by making it appear chicer, but they don’t serve many purposes aside from that.

Regular Fit for an Athletic Look

Regular Fit for an Athletic Look

Unlike slim-fit snowsuits, a regular fit runs true to size. These snowsuits are best if you live somewhere very cold because they leave more room for layers underneath. Plus, they offer a little more wiggle room if you find tighter clothes uncomfortable.

Regular fit snowsuits often lack the cinched waistlines that slim fit snowsuits have, so they won’t define your figure. They may look boxy or baggy when worn. However, the lack of stitching leaves room for more pockets around the waist, so you will be able to carry more items

2

Choose Insulation That Meets Your Needs

Insulation is what makes a snowsuit warm. While there are many kinds of insulation out there, snowsuits usually use down or synthetic fill.

Down Is Warm and Lightweight

Down Is Warm and Lightweight

Down comes from the down feathers of ducks and geese. This insulation material is prized for being highly compressible, breathable, and lightweight. A down snowsuit is easy to pack up and comfortable to wear.

Fill power is what determines the quality of down. Fill power measures down’s ability to trap heat, and it is measured by how much volume one ounce of down fills up. Fill power is measured between 450 and 900 cubic inches. A higher number indicates warmer and higher quality down.

The downside to this material is that it stops insulating once it gets wet. Additionally, down takes a long time to dry. So, a down snowsuit is best for dry conditions. Cotton offers similar pros and cons to down, but it's less common and offers poorer insulation. Unless you're in very dry conditions, cotton may not be the best choice.

Synthetic Fill Can Endure Cold and Wet Conditions

Synthetic Fill Can Endure Cold and Wet Conditions

Synthetic fill is created by weaving polyester fibers together. The use of polyester in synthetic fill is what makes it both warm and water-resistant. Sometimes, it may be treated with silicone to make it more resistant to mold and dust.

While synthetic fill does not insulate as well as down, it retains its warming properties when wet because of the use of polyester fibers. It also dries quickly. Synthetic fill is the best choice for wet conditions

3

Keep an Eye Out for Waterproof and Breathability Ratings

Keep an Eye Out for Waterproof and Breathability Ratings

An important element of any snowsuit is how waterproof and breathable it is. These ratings often go hand-in-hand to demonstrate how durable a snowsuit is.

The waterproof rating is measured in millimeters, and a higher measurement indicates a more waterproof snowsuit. Meanwhile, the breathability rating indicates how well a material transfers humidity. This rating is measured in grams, and a high measurement indicates how well the material transfers the humidity outside of the snowsuit. The higher the number, the better.

A waterproof rating can be as low as zero millimeters or as high as 20,000 millimeters. Likewise, a breathability rating can be as low as zero grams or as high as 20,000 grams.

We recommend getting a snowsuit with a waterproof rating and breathability rating of at least 5,000 millimeters. A snowsuit with this rating can sufficiently protect against light rainfall and average snowfall without being too humid.

Look For Useful Features Like Hoods and Gaiters

Whether you want to look good, stay warm, or both, there are a lot of useful features that you should keep an eye out for when buying a snowsuit!

Taped Seams Keep Out Wind, Snow, and Water

Taped Seams Keep Out Wind, Snow, and Water

A taped seam is a seal that is designed to keep out moisture. Snowsuits usually have either critically taped seams or fully taped seams. If a snowsuit has critically taped seams, then only the most exposed seams are sealed against moisture. These are often the seams on the shoulders, arms, and sides.

Fully taped seams, on the other hand, are completely sealed against moisture. These offer the most protection against cold and moisture because each seam is sealed.

Hoods Are Stylish and Protect From the Cold

Hoods Are Stylish and Protect From the Cold

A hood can offer additional protection against the cold. Some hoods are insulated or have warm linings, which will keep you warm while keeping cold air out. They are also very adjustable. Many hoods come with drawstrings so that you can tighten or loosen them, and most snowsuit hoods are removable if you want to forgo them altogether.

Hoods can also add to the overall look of a snowsuit. Many sport decorative faux fur linings that can complement the look of the snowsuit.

Gaiters Add Another Layer Between You and the Snow

Gaiters Add Another Layer Between You and the Snow

Gaiters are found on the wrists and legs of snowsuits. They are made out of water-resistant material and create an additional barrier between your skin and the cold. They are designed to prevent snow and moisture from getting on the inside of the snowsuit.
