Medium size trees most closely resemble real trees and take up less space than a full-size tree. Slim trees, sometimes called pencil trees, don’t look very natural but are great if you’re working with a small space or setting up multiple trees.
Ultimately, it’s the circumference of the tree that will determine what size tree you’ll be able to fit in your space, so do some measuring beforehand and check out the details in the product description.
Green pine needles trees look more traditional, but if you’re looking to save a bit of money while livening up your place, a non-traditional-colored tree is also a great option.
PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, was one of the first materials used to make artificial Christmas trees as both an affordable and long-lasting material. PVC needles are essentially sheets of PVC that have been cut into many thin rectangles, so they don’t look entirely realistic. However, they tend to be cheaper.
PE, or polyethylene, has been used as an artificial Christmas tree material only in the past decade or so. Unlike PVC needles, they are inject-molded into 3D shapes to make them look closer to the real thing. This means they tend to cost more than PVC needle trees, but if you’re looking for something realistic and long-lasting, PE needles are the better option.
Pre-lit trees have lights attached to the tree so you don’t have to set up any extra lights if you don’t want to. Look for lights that have a continuous on setting or burn-out protection to prevent all of the lights from going out when a single bulb fails.
Flocked trees are frosted with white or glitter to mimic the image of snow, if you’re looking to create a winter wonderland. Other common accents include pine cones, berries, and more. Consider what kind of mood you want to set in the room when browsing accented trees.
Trees with hinged branches tend to look less full than hook-on branches and can leave gaps, but they require less manual labor and time for setup.
Hook-on branches require you to manually attach every branch to the tree. While this is more work, they tend to look fuller and give you some room to customize its appearance. If you simply must have a pre-lit tree, you’ll have a hard time finding one with hook-on branches, as the branches need to be connected to the trunk already for the lights to stay on.
Also, trees that are guaranteed to be safe or long-lasting will often be specified as fire-retardant or fade resistant.

While many reviewers said they were surprised at how small the box for this Senjie tree was, they were delighted with how large and full this flocked tree looked when set up properly. Theyalso said it was easy to put together, especially considering there’s an instructional video on their official product page.
This Best Choice Products tree comes with 1,346 snow-tipped PVC needles and is assembled in four parts, including the metal stand. It has 550 lights hidden within the branches, shining in a warm white glow. Upon setup, you'll want to fluff the tree for around 30-45 minutes to get a full shape.
The tree does not have a switch on or off button, so it will need to be unplugged for the lights to turn off. Reviewers warn that the tree is pretty uneven in where lights are placed - though this could be because they didn't wipe off the flocking from the lights before use.
You will need to be prepared for a bit of mess when setting up, as the flocking falls off. However, reviewers like that it's easy to assemble and that the lights give off a soft, warm glow. The tree also comes in three other sizes: 4.5 feet, 6 feet, and 9 feet.
Many reviewers chose to store the tree in the box it was shipped in, but the company does sell separate storage bags. One thing reviewers noted, however, is that average- or larger-sized ornaments may be too big for this tree. Smaller ornaments will look better and help you save more space in the end.
This tree's needles are made from what the company calls, "Safe PVC" - it's non-fade and non-allergenic, and eco-friendly. It's quite tall, at nearly 10 feet, so it can be displayed on your patio or indoors. The tree is a bit more involved, as the branches need to be attached individually, and you will need to fluff up the branches to get a full shape.
Reviewers say the tree doesn't get as full as needed - there are a few awkward gaps in between branches where you may be able to see the metal. The base is also rather thin for the size of the tree. On the other hand, reviewers like that setup is mess-free and the customer service, responsive. The tree also comes in green or white, and in six other sizes.
Christmas trees may be the center of any festive celebration, but there are plenty of other ways to bring cheer into your home. Christmas songs can set the mood, lights to brighten the atmosphere, and fun movies for the whole family can help make the holidays so much better.
