How to Choose an Artificial Christmas Tree – Buying Guide

Whether your artificial Christmas tree is the centerpiece of your home or an embellishment on other decorations, you’ll want one that is the right size, sets the mood of the room, and is easy to set up. We’ve broken down what you should look for in this convenient buying guide.
1

Choose a Size from Full, Medium, and Slim to Suit Your Space

Artificial Christmas trees come in different shapes and circumferences. We’ve explained the differences between them below so you can choose the perfect tree.

The Circumference of the Tree Determines the Space It Takes Up

The Circumference of the Tree Determines the Space It Takes Up
Full-size trees are meant to look like trees with a lot of branches and needles, so they take up a lot of space. They are better in areas where they have a lot of space or they’ll be the focal point of the room.

Medium size trees most closely resemble real trees and take up less space than a full-size tree. Slim trees, sometimes called pencil trees, don’t look very natural but are great if you’re working with a small space or setting up multiple trees.

Ultimately, it’s the circumference of the tree that will determine what size tree you’ll be able to fit in your space, so do some measuring beforehand and check out the details in the product description.

Your Tree Should Be Shorter Than Your Ceiling

Your Tree Should Be Shorter Than Your Ceiling
Your fake tree should be anywhere from 6 to 12 inches shorter than the height of your ceiling. This allows space for tree toppers and it also prevents the tree from hugging against your ceiling. If you don’t already know how high your ceilings are, we suggest you measure before you shop.
2

Decide Whether You Want Realistic or Decorative

Artificial Christmas trees come in a variety of different colors and materials that can make a tree more of a realistic or more of a decorative piece.

Go With a Color That Suits Your Desired Mood

Go With a Color That Suits Your Desired Mood
Some trees have the traditional green pine needles while others can be white, gold, blue, pink, red, and whatever color you can think of. Some don’t even have needles at all!

Green pine needles trees look more traditional, but if you’re looking to save a bit of money while livening up your place, a non-traditional-colored tree is also a great option.

Understand the Difference Between PVC and PE

Understand the Difference Between PVC and PE
Most artificial pine needles are made with either PVC or PE, or sometimes even both. The material used for the needles can determine how realistic it looks.

PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, was one of the first materials used to make artificial Christmas trees as both an affordable and long-lasting material. PVC needles are essentially sheets of PVC that have been cut into many thin rectangles, so they don’t look entirely realistic. However, they tend to be cheaper.

PE, or polyethylene, has been used as an artificial Christmas tree material only in the past decade or so. Unlike PVC needles, they are inject-molded into 3D shapes to make them look closer to the real thing. This means they tend to cost more than PVC needle trees, but if you’re looking for something realistic and long-lasting, PE needles are the better option.

Complete the Mood With Accents

Complete the Mood With Accents
Some trees have accents that can create the mood of a room. In some cases, they can also help save the cost of buying extra ornaments or lights.

Pre-lit trees have lights attached to the tree so you don’t have to set up any extra lights if you don’t want to. Look for lights that have a continuous on setting or burn-out protection to prevent all of the lights from going out when a single bulb fails.

Flocked trees are frosted with white or glitter to mimic the image of snow, if you’re looking to create a winter wonderland. Other common accents include pine cones, berries, and more. Consider what kind of mood you want to set in the room when browsing accented trees.

3

Consider How Long Setup Will Take

Most artificial Christmas trees are collapsible and come in multiple parts. Even though you’ll likely be using this only once a year, it’s worth it to think about how much manual labor you’re willing to do.

Pick Between Hinged Branches or Hook-on Branches

Pick Between Hinged Branches or Hook-on Branches
Branches for fake trees will usually come in one of two types: hinged or hook-on. Hinged branches are permanently attached to the trunk of the tree. All you need to do for setup is assemble the trunk, unfold the branches, and pull them out.

Trees with hinged branches tend to look less full than hook-on branches and can leave gaps, but they require less manual labor and time for setup.

Hook-on branches require you to manually attach every branch to the tree. While this is more work, they tend to look fuller and give you some room to customize its appearance. If you simply must have a pre-lit tree, you’ll have a hard time finding one with hook-on branches, as the branches need to be connected to the trunk already for the lights to stay on.

See What’s Included in the Whole Package

See What’s Included in the Whole Package
If you want a safe, convenient, and long-lasting tree, reading the descriptions and reviews for artificial trees can help you figure out which is best for you. Look for trees that include both a stand (preferably metal) and a storage bag for easy to set up and store.

Also, trees that are guaranteed to be safe or long-lasting will often be specified as fire-retardant or fade resistant.

A Basic Artificial Tree That Comes in a Wide Range of Sizes

Reviewers love how easy this four-part construction tree is to set up, and it can withstand a lot of weight (even a 5-pound cat!). The metal stand is also foldable for easy setup and storage. What you’ll love about this particular tree is that it comes in 10 different sizes ranging from 4 feet to 16 feet, so it can fit in any home setting!

Some reviewers said they wish it had a fuller appearance, recommend that you “fluff” the branches to make the tree look fuller.

Pinecones and Lightly Flocked for a Natural, Wintry Look

This artificial tree (which also comes in 5-foot, 7-foot, and 7.5-foot sizes) comes with cotton-like fake snow and pine cones to make it look like winter has settled in your house.

While many reviewers said they were surprised at how small the box for this Senjie tree was, they were delighted with how large and full this flocked tree looked when set up properly. Theyalso said it was easy to put together, especially considering there’s an instructional video on their official product page.

This tree doesn’t come with a storage bag, but the company and reviewers say it’s easy to store in the box it’s shipped in. One word of caution from the makers: this tree can be used outdoors, but it’s not waterproof enough to withstand rain. This would be a great product for those who like a bit of snow or want a head start on decorating their tree.

Pre-Decorated for an Easy Christmas

This is the perfect tree for those who want an easy decorating experience; all you need to do is add ornaments and a tree topper! This tree comes with flocked pine cones and lights to combine a warm Christmas glow with a touch of nature. Reviewers especially liked the mix of colors that the cashmere and bristle branch tips created.

Since it’s a full-size tree, it will take a bit of time to fluff all of the pine needles to their full potential. Some reviewers also claimed that some of the lights didn’t work when they received their order, so check before you set it up or have some extra lights for backup.

Bring the Snowy Outdoor Look Into Your Home

This Best Choice Products tree comes with 1,346 snow-tipped PVC needles and is assembled in four parts, including the metal stand. It has 550 lights hidden within the branches, shining in a warm white glow. Upon setup, you'll want to fluff the tree for around 30-45 minutes to get a full shape.

The tree does not have a switch on or off button, so it will need to be unplugged for the lights to turn off. Reviewers warn that the tree is pretty uneven in where lights are placed - though this could be because they didn't wipe off the flocking from the lights before use.

You will need to be prepared for a bit of mess when setting up, as the flocking falls off. However, reviewers like that it's easy to assemble and that the lights give off a soft, warm glow. The tree also comes in three other sizes: 4.5 feet, 6 feet, and 9 feet.

A Slim Tree to Fit Smaller Spaces

What reviewers liked most about this artificial tree is that though it saves a lot of space in terms of fullness, it’s tall enough to look like a festive Christmas tree. Assembling the tree, fluffing out the branches, and disassembling the tree are all simple processes.

Many reviewers chose to store the tree in the box it was shipped in, but the company does sell separate storage bags. One thing reviewers noted, however, is that average- or larger-sized ornaments may be too big for this tree. Smaller ornaments will look better and help you save more space in the end.

The Most Realistic Artificial Tree

This tree is made with a mix of PVC needles and molded PE tips to make this tree look as realistic as possible. A few reviewers who said they’d always used real trees at Christmas claimed this tree was almost as good as a real fir.

The only complaints customers had about this tree is that the parts were a bit heavier and the setup took a bit longer than they expected. This tree also comes in a pre-lit version and different sizes.

10 Feet Tall and Eco-Friendly

This tree's needles are made from what the company calls, "Safe PVC" - it's non-fade and non-allergenic, and eco-friendly. It's quite tall, at nearly 10 feet, so it can be displayed on your patio or indoors. The tree is a bit more involved, as the branches need to be attached individually, and you will need to fluff up the branches to get a full shape.

Reviewers say the tree doesn't get as full as needed - there are a few awkward gaps in between branches where you may be able to see the metal. The base is also rather thin for the size of the tree. On the other hand, reviewers like that setup is mess-free and the customer service, responsive. The tree also comes in green or white, and in six other sizes.

Multicolored Lights and Pinecones for Easy Decorating

This tree is not only easy to set up, but it has a ton of decorations already included that will make it stand out. It has glitter, pine cones, and LED lights that come in two different settings (white or colored). Since it’s a smaller tree, it would be suited for smaller spaces or families with small children.

Reviewers said that the glitter can make the setup a bit messy, so they suggest giving the parts a good shake outside or over a hard-surfaced floor before assembling the tree. Customers also liked that the lights came with a remote controller to change the colors.

A Pre-lit Tree With Plenty of Light Settings

If you want a pre-lit tree that will dazzle your house guests, this one is a great candidate. Its 230 LED lights have 6 different colors and 8 flash modes for a custom and colorful look. It even comes with a star on top, so you can save yourself the trouble of looking for a separate tree topper.

As with most electrical-related products, some customers claimed that their lights or plug weren’t working, so check before setting it up completely. Some reviewers also said that the lights can be a bit bright, but the addition of some garlands can soften their glare. This tree is also available in 5-foot and 7-foot sizes.

Use This Thoroughly Decorated Tree as a Centerpiece

It’s the ribbons that make this BrylaneHome tree stand out; that, along with the included ornaments and LED lights, make it impossible to have this tree as a mere side piece. In case you’re not a fan of the plaid, the ribbons come in a number of patterns and colors.

We originally hesitated to add this tree to our ranking as it is a plastic rather than a metal stand, but reviewers said it’s lightweight enough that it’s not an issue. We’d recommend this tree for those who don’t want to add extra ornaments or those who want a tree that’s easy to set up.
