How to Choose a Tea Tin - Buying Guide

Apart from obvious considerations, such as size, there are many things you should consider before purchasing a tea tin. Keep the following suggestions in mind to keep your tea nice and fresh!

1

Choose the Right Material for Your Tin

Choose the Right Material for Your Tin

Tea tins typically come in four different materials: glass, metal, ceramic, or plastic, and all of these have their own strengths and weaknesses. Clear glass containers allow you to see what is inside and can help decorate your kitchen, especially if you have pretty or colorful herbal teas.

However, you shouldn’t store tea in direct sunlight. Most glass containers will let at least a little light in, and this can damage the tea. Plastic has similar issues to glass. The smell of previous teas can linger in plastic containers, but these can be a good budget option.

Metal containers block sunlight and can keep tea fresh for a long time. However, it can be difficult to see what tea is inside. If you have several metal containers, it’s easy to get teas confused. On the plus side, you have the freedom to decorate and label them!

Ceramic has similar properties to metal. You can’t see the contents, but they often come in various different styles and patterns. However, if you buy a ceramic container, make sure that it has a good seal. Ceramic itself doesn’t seal as tightly as a tea container should, so look for ceramic containers with a silicon or rubber seal.

When choosing the material for your container, think about where it will be stored. If you plan to store in a closed cabinet that will stay at a constant temperature (i.e. not near the stove or range) a mason jar you already have would work just fine. A mason jar with a plastic cap also has the advantage of being easy and quiet to open, without any clattering or flying lids!

The advantage of metal containers is that you will find them in many different shapes and sizes that can fit the space you have.

2

Make Sure the Tin is Airtight

Make Sure the Tin is Airtight

The best tea tins keep tea fresh! You need to keep the tea leaves, whether they're loose or in bags, free of air and moisture. Air or moisture getting into your tea will ruin the flavor and shorten its life span. Look for features like double lids, airtight seals, or tight caps.

An airtight container doesn’t mean a container that is impossible to open, though! You do still want to drink the tea, so make sure the container is easy to open and close

Tins with an internal lid and external, perhaps more decorative, cap are the best option when looking for air-tightness, and many tea companies sell their product in these tins.

3

What About Tin Size?

What About Tin Size?

You might be wondering why we haven't mentioned anything about size yet. In short, not all teas are the same. 5 ounces of a loose-leaf tea with large leaves versus one with tiny leaves will take up a different amount of space

Some tea tins and canisters makers will provide an estimate of how much it can hold, so you can use this as a ballpark estimate. Our number 4 pick (the Teavac) tin, for example, says it can hold up to 6 ounces "depending on the item". Unfortunately, it's more of a guessing game than anything!

Kate Hesser

You should also think about how much of the tea you want to be able to store at one time and it is recommended to store no more than you will drink in about two to three months.

Generally, to make one cup of tea you need two grams of tea, which is about one teaspoon. So, one ounce of tea would give you 14 cups of tea! If you have seven cups of tea a week, four ounces would last you just about eight weeks.

Six Cute Tea Tins With Double Lids

This pack of six small tea tins includes three pretty designs. Each tin has a double lid too! The inner lid seals tight and has a handle for easy removal. The manufacturers advise that tea should be kept in a plastic bag inside the tin for long-term storage.

Despite these instructions from the manufacturers, reviewers state that the tins seal well and keep the tea fresh. Unlike several other tins on this list, users say they are bigger than expected

Kate's Recommended Tea Tins

For travel, I like the Teavac from Tightpac America. It will keep your tea fresh and dry and prevent spillage while in transit.

Frequently Asked Questions

In addition to checking our buying guide for accuracy, Kate took the time to answer a commonly asked question about tea storage.

When do tea leaves expire?

Kate told us, "Generally speaking, the less processed or 'oxidized' the tea leaves are, the shorter shelf-life they have. White teas and green teas will expire first, typically within about six months when stored at home.

Oolongs and Black teas can be stored at home and enjoyed for up to about two years, and there are aged teas like Pu'erh that can be stored and enjoyed for decades! Tea blenders and shops have the capability to preserve tea for even longer, so I leave the longer-term storage to the professionals and keep my at-home inventory circulating according to the timeline I mentioned above."
