How to Choose a Tea Mug - Buying Guide

Besides choosing a tea mug that looks good, there are several things that you should take into account before making a purchase. Check out our buying guide for more features to take into consideration!

① Choose a Mug for Either Tea Bags or Loose-Leaf Tea

Choose a Mug for Either Tea Bags or Loose-Leaf Tea

There are many different types of tea mugs on the market, but they can be broadly split into two categories: for use with loose-leaf tea or tea bags. Depending on what type of tea you drink, your choice of tea mug will change.

If you drink loose-leaf teas, then it might be a good idea to search for mugs that include an infuser. Mugs with built-in infusers allow you to brew loose-leaf tea in the mug without the need for any other equipment. They're also versatile in that if you take the infuser out of the mug, then it becomes an ordinary mug and can be used with tea bags as well.

If you drink tea bags, then an infuser isn’t necessary at all. Instead, look for tea mugs that have room to hold your tea bag after it’s finished brewing. Some will also include lids that you can place the tea bag on!

Take a good look at the infuser. It should be big enough to allow the tea leaves to "dance" in the water so they infuse properly. The holes or mesh in the infuser should be fine enough to keep very small particles of leaves from ending up in the cup.

② Make Sure it Can Retain Heat While Being Safe

Make Sure it Can Retain Heat While Being Safe

Tea mugs come in a variety of materials, but the most popular are glass or ceramic. Both materials conduct heat and can become hot to the touch when they have hot liquids in them. Many products will be "double-walled" or insulated to keep your drink hot and prevent your hands from being burned. So, look for products that have these features.

Infusers are typically made out of metal, and there's no way to stop these from heating up. Look for infusers that have handles for easier use. Some infusers may be made out of silicone; these don’t heat up as much but might give your tea a plastic taste. Of course, if you’re going to microwave your mug or put it in a dishwasher, make sure that it's safe to do so!

Silicon infusers are often too small for the leaves to properly infuse and can be very hard to clean.

③ A Bigger Mug Doesn’t Always Mean More Tea

A Bigger Mug Doesn’t Always Mean More Tea

The size of the mug and the amount of tea it can hold are two different things! This is especially true with mugs that have infusers. If the infuser is large, bulky, and overflowing with loose-leaf tea, then you’ll find that half of the tea will disappear when you remove it.

If you like to drink a big mug of tea, look for larger mugs that have reasonably-sized infusers. For reference, you typically don’t need more than a couple of teaspoons of leaves for a standard-size mug.

④ Look for a Lid for Added Convenience

Look for a Lid for Added Convenience

When you brew loose-leaf tea, the tea leaves will soak up a lot of liquid. This means that they will drip hot tea for a long time after being taken out of the mug. It can get very messy! Many tea mugs that have infusers inside also have a lid.

These lids serve a dual purpose: they keep the liquid hot and act as a place to put the infuser so it doesn’t drip onto the table, floor, or anywhere else. The lids aren’t usually made to drink out of and don’t seal, so be careful not to knock over the mug while the lid is on. Otherwise, you will spill all of your tea!

Having the lid on to catch your infuser right in hand will make it more likely that you will remove the infuser of leaves at the appropriate time and won't over brew your tea while looking for a place to put it.

Frequently Asked Questions

In addition to checking our buying guide for accuracy, Kate took the time to answer some commonly asked questions about tea mugs.

How do I use a tea mug with an infuser?

"Pour some hot water into the empty mug and let it sit for about a minute. This will ensure that the water for your tea does not lose any heat trying to bring the ceramic up to temperature," Kate explains.

"Empty out the water, place the infuser in the mug and add the appropriate amount of tea. Then pour the water at the appropriate temperature: 200 to 212 degrees for black tea, 175 to 190 degrees for green tea.

Water is always added to tea and never the other way around. When the tea has steeped for the appropriate amount of time, remove the infuser and place on the inverted lid for the mug or in a dish where it can drain."

Which tea mugs stay hot for a long time?

Kate says, "The denser the material, be it glass or porcelain, the longer your tea will stay hot. Be wary of mugs that seem to intended as decor: they are often larger, made of lightweight, porous ceramic and usually have some pithy saying on them. They make much better pencil holders.

Another factor is the height to surface area ratio. A classic teacup with a saucer is relatively short compared to the wide diameter of the cup, allowing the tea to cool quickly so it can be enjoyed with the intention that the cup will be refilled several times during the sitting.

A standard 10-ounce mug has a height that is about 1.5 times its diameter, meaning that the liquid will stay hotter as steam is not being released and cooling the tea too quickly relative to the volume in the cup."
