How We Tested the Products

Scroll to testing method
We gathered the 11 bestselling Salad Spinners and put them through rigorous testing.
  1. Ease of Draining

    Test① Ease of Draining

If you're going to buy a salad spinner, it should get your greens as dry as possible. We tested for ease of draining to evaluate how well each product could do this. We first spun some lettuce for 15 seconds, and did a visual check to see how dry it ended up. From here, in order to create specific standardized values and qualifications for what's considered well drained, we used sponges as our baseline to rate how well each spinner can drain water. We used the following method.1. Soak small pieces of sponge with 5.3 ounces of water2. Put the soaked sponges into each of the tested products and spin them for 15 seconds3. Weigh the water that collected into the spinner bowl and give higher ratings if more water is collected

  2. Ease of Use

    Test② Ease of Use

Even if it drains well, you may not keep using it if it's a hassle. To that end, we had six reviewers test each product to give each a rating for ease of use. They focused on the following key details when giving their scores and ratings. Is it easy to set up?Can you make the colander spin with little effort?Does it stay still when you're trying to use it?

  3. Ease of Washing

    Test③ Ease of Washing

You'll want to be particular about how easy it is to wash your salad spinner given that it's kitchenware that touches raw food you'll eat. We checked for the following key details to give each salad spinner a rating for its ease of washing next. We gave high ratings to any product designed simply to make washing every crevice easy to wash properly. Is the lid easy to wash?Is the bowl easy to wash?Is the strainer easy to wash?Is it dishwasher-safe?

  4. Ease of Storage

    Test④ Ease of Storage

A kitchen with endless storage space is only a dream, which means you'll want something that can be put away easily. We tested for ease of storage by measuring the approximate volume of each salad spinner upon storage and rated ones that are more compact with higher numbers.

What Makes a Salad Spinner Worth Using?

You might be trying to decide if you even need a salad spinner. Can't you just dry leafy greens off with paper towels? But salad spinners are one kitchen tool we think it's worth investing in.

Better Straining Will Result in a More Delicious Salad

Better Straining Will Result in a More Delicious Salad

One of the advantages salad spinners have over normal strainers or patting lettuce dry with paper towels is how much better they can drain the water off. Well-drained greens not only have a wonderful crunch to them, but also won't water down dressings when you make a salad. You can even stop hot oil from splashing when making a vegetable stir-fry by thoroughly draining your vegetables with a salad spinner first.

Reduce Your Cooking Time When Straining Lots at a Time

Reduce Your Cooking Time When Straining Lots at a Time

You'll be able to drain the water off a large amount of leafy greens in one go with a salad spinner. It's not worth drying each leaf with a paper towel just so you can have crispy lettuce for your salads and sandwiches. If you use a salad spinner, you can enjoy the convenience of straining a large amount of greens in a short time. We especially recommend them for large families or anyone who can never get enough veggies.

How to Choose a Salad Spinner - Buying Guide

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Salad Spinners.

① All of Them Drain Water Well, With Differences Seen Only in User-Friendliness

All of Them Drain Water Well, With Differences Seen Only in User-Friendliness

You're probably wondering which of the salad spinners can actually dry your lettuce properly. We tested for ease of draining to assess how well each product performed. We first spun some lettuce for 15 seconds, and did a visual check to see how well it was drained. From there, in order to create specific standardized values for what's considered well drained, we used strained sponges as our baseline to rate how well each spinner can strain out water.

We put the following method into use.

1. Soak 5.3 ounces of water into cut-up sponges

2. Put the soaked sponges into each of the tested products and spin for 15 seconds

3. The higher the volume of water drained into the bowl, the higher the rating it was given

The results of this test showed that every product could drain water sufficiently. We believe a salad spinner should be picked based on user-friendliness, since there was no difference for how well each product performs for ease of draining.

② Salad Spinners Come in 3 Main Types, With a Pump-Type Being Easiest to Use

Salad Spinners Come in 3 Main Types, With a Pump-Type Being Easiest to Use

Salad spinners can be differentiated into the three types: pump, crank, and pull-cord. Our most recommended type is the push-pump kind. Read on to see our reasons for this below.

Drain Greens Single-Handedly With a Push-Type

Drain Greens Single-Handedly With a Push-Type

A push type is the easiest to use, thanks to the button on top that'll spin the colander inside just by pushing down on it. You'll need to use your other hand to keep the bowl in place with a pull-cord type, which requires a string to be pulled, or a crank-type that requires a handle to be turned.

A pump type will let you drain water quicker and easier since the drain basket will spin around several times with a single push. On the other end, we felt crank-types were a little harder to use since you have to constantly turn the handle to keep it spinning. We highly recommend a push type if you want to make drying leafy greens a breeze.

Make Sure There's a Brake Button

Make Sure There's a Brake Button

Pay attention to whether the type you're considering has a brake button. A brake button is a feature that'll bring the spinning colander to a halt instantly. You can choose when you'd like to stop the spinning without having to wait for it to naturally slow down. Make sure it comes with a brake button when you're picking one out.

OXO Is Our Top Recommended Pump-Type Salad Spinner

OXO Is Our Top Recommended Pump-Type Salad Spinner

We found that Good Grips Large Salad Spinner by OXO was by far the easiest to use among all pump-types. There were three main factors involving ease of use for our top pick. The first was how easily the pump button pressed down. We felt it was not only big enough, but we could push with virtually no effort. And even if you have wet hands, they won't slip off the skid-resistant silicone top, either.

The second factor that made this simple to use was how easily the lid can be put on or taken off. The bowl and lid of this product mesh together so well that you can put the lid on from any angle. It'll prove to be a cinch even if you're in a rush.

The third factor we saw that made this salad spinner our favorite to use was how stable it was. It's even made with anti-slip material layering the bottom that keeps it in place. You can even use this salad spinner on top of a wet kitchen counter. We'll give you an even more detailed review later, so read on to see our ranking list and put it to use to help you make the best choice for your salad spinner.

③ To Make Small Salads, Consider a Pull-Cord or Crank-Type

You should keep pull-cord and crank salad spinners in consideration if you only ever need to drain a small amount of greens at one time.

Pull Cord and Crank Operated Ones Tend to Be More Compact

Pull Cord and Crank Operated Ones Tend to Be More Compact

There are more compact products among the pull-cord and crank types, which makes them the perfect fit for anyone with limited storage space or who is looking for something with a smaller capacity.

These also have a simpler, lighter construction, so they’re often cheaper and can even be as little as $6.99.

④ Check the Construction of the Lid for Easy Cleaning

A salad spinner that's easy to wash would be fantastic if it'll be something you use every day. Be warned that the shape of the lid greatly affects ease of washing, so choose carefully.

For Daily Use, Go With On That Has a Flat Lid

For Daily Use, Go With On That Has a Flat Lid

The lids that are easiest to clean can be disassembled and have few grooves or bumps. You can keep these cleanest since all the ins and outs can be washed properly. Food can get trapped in tiny gaps with lids that can't be broken apart, which makes them harder to wash.

Especially since you usually use a salad spinner for foods that aren't cooked, you want these kitchen tools kept as clean as possible, so make sure to pick something easy to wash.

⑤ To Save Space in Your Cabinet, Choose a Collapsible Type

A downside to salad spinners is how easily they can take up so much of your storage space. It's best to check how much storage room you have beforehand.

Most Salad Spinners Are Big and Bulky

Most Salad Spinners Are Big and Bulky

Not only do salad spinners have a large bowl, but many have a handle that sticks out, making them hard to find space for in a small kitchen. We recommend the Prepworks Collapsible Salad Spinner by Progressive for anyone with limited room in their kitchen. It can be folded up small to a thickness of just over three inches, so it'll fit in a slim space in your cabinet.

mybest's Top Choice! Quick and Easy for Fast Food Prep

OXO's Good Grips Large Salad Spinner is made with a universally accessible design meant to be "easy for anyone to use." The salad spinner itself is made of plastic. The bowl and lid fit together so well that you can attach the lid with ease from any angle.

One push of the pump button will spin the colander quite vigorously, so you can drain water with only three to four pushes. The first push does require a bit of strength, but you'll have no trouble after that to finish the job using the large, user-friendly pump button. You can even stop the spinning colander at any time with the included brake button.

The lid can be broken apart into two separate pieces. It'll be a breeze washing this lid with its flat design that features few irregularities. Although it's slightly big and can take up space, this salad spinner comes with a feature to lock down the pump button when you're ready to put it away. We highly recommend this to anyone who wants the easiest time when drying leafy greens for their salads and sandwiches.

Big Handle That's Easy to Grab and Use With Little Effort

The Prepworks Salad Spinner is a crank-type by Progressive that has a big handle and a spout to pour out any drained water. It feels quite steady when in use, thanks to the large and easy-to-grip handle. Although the knob portion is a little small, it can still be turned simply, so we found nothing to criticize regarding usage.

We also noticed that the lid fits the bowl without any trouble. The back of the lid is also flat and designed simply, giving it a thumbs up for ease of washing. Although the handle part sticks out a bit, the bowl is relatively small, so it shouldn't cause too much trouble when trying to find a place to store this salad spinner.

Lid That Snaps on Easily and Large, Slip-Resistant Pump Button

The SteeL Salad Spinner by OXO can be used with one hand. It also features a transparent lid so you can check on the ingredients inside. We were able to snap the lid on this salad spinner from any angle thanks to how well the bowl and top were made to fit together.

It also has superior steadiness thanks to the extra-strong slip-resistant material on the bottom of it. This salad spinner includes a brake button so you can choose when you'd like the colander to stop spinning. While the rubber pump button is large and slip-resistant, we had to press with a considerable amount of strength.

We had no complaints regarding ease of washing since the lid is flat and can be taken apart into two pieces. However, the bowl itself is large and weighs almost four pounds, which makes it more of a hassle to put away and take out.

Flat Lid to Maintain Cleanliness and Feels Stable When Using

The Easy Spin Salad Spinner is a pull-cord salad spinner by Zyliss that is dishwasher-safe. The handle is designed with an ergonomic shape. The bowl and lid fit well together, but the lid is a bit hard to pull off since it doesn't have a lip to grip. The large handle is easy to grab hold of and fits four fingers, but using this salad spinner requires you to pull the string upward with a bit of strength.

You'll have little worry about this salad spinner sliding around when in use thanks to the anti-slip material on the bottom. The included brake button also allows you to stop the colander from rotating at any time you choose. The flat design of this lid, which can be disassembled into two parts, makes it easy to wash. We were also pleased to see that it's dishwasher-safe too.

Very Lightweight, but Somewhat Troublesome to Set Up

The Salad Spinner with QuickChop Pull Chopper is a set by Mueller that includes a salad spinner and manual chopper, both of which use the interchangeable pull handle. The chopper even comes with a storage lid so you can store cut vegetables directly in the refrigerator.

This salad spinner requires you to put the bowl, colander, inner lid, outer lid, and handle together before use, which may eat up a bit of your time. You'll need to match up the handle with a tiny hole on the inner lid, which we felt was an inefficient design. You'll get several spins with one pull of the cord, but you'll have to wait for the colander to come to a natural stop since this spinner comes with no brake button.

However, every bit can be broken apart and the overall design features no uneven structure, making it highly washable. We love that this salad spinner only weighs a light 22 ounces, too, so you can put it away and take it out with little effort.

Push-Button Goes Down Easy, but the Bowl and Lid Take Effort to Click Together

This is a large, 6.2-quart salad spinner by Brieftons. The lid and bowl design are somewhat lacking, as the bowl requires the lid to be placed on from directly above to fit. The rubber pump button is made to keep your hand steady and also needs only the lightest press to efficiently strain your greens. It has a brake button to stop the colander from spinning whenever you feel it necessary.

Even though the lid can't be disassembled, we believe this salad spinner is still easy to wash given the flat design of it. While it's nice that you can lock down the push button, we think it's best to check how much storage space you have available first, since this salad spinner is on the larger side.

Holds Plenty at Once, but Will Take Up Space in the Kitchen

The Pro Pump Salad Spinner by Farberware has a 5.25-quart capacity and can strain a large salad in one go. You can fit this lid and bowl together from any angle, given how well they were designed to snap together. We were pleased to see the pump button was made with rubber, which makes it stable and easy to push down. The first push of the button will require the slightest amount of effort, but afterward you keep pressing down smoothly.

The bottom is fitted with anti-slip material and will remain steady while spinning. The lid may be flat, but we were disappointed to see that it couldn't be taken apart for better washing. It's possible that food scraps could accumulate in the hard-to-clean spaces in it. Even though the pump button can be locked down when storing, because this salad spinner has a 10-and-5/8-inch width, the larger size will need more space to put away. We believe it's best to confirm how much storage room you have first before considering this option.

Bowl Slips Around While in Use and the Lid Isn’t Easily Washable

This salad spinner with a spout is made by Westmark Germany. The handle is designed with an ergonomic shape. This salad spinner got extra points for the good fit between the bowl and lid and the large handle that we could crank with only light force. You'll have to keep on cranking to make the colander drain, and expect it to slide around, as it doesn't include any anti-slip padding.

The bowl itself is relatively small, but you may encounter some trouble putting it away since the handle does stick out. The lid has many bumps and grooves in its design and can't be taken apart, which caused us to lower its rating during our ease of washing tests.

Great Ease of Storage, but the Heavy Handle Is Hard to Turn

The Prepworks Collapsible Salad Spinner by Progressive is great for those short on space. The handle can even be lowered when storing this salad spinner away. We did think the small handle wasn’t the easiest to grip well. That may be the reason we found cranking this salad spinner to be weighty and inefficient. The bowl would wobble while it spun, since we had to put in a little extra elbow grease to get the handle to turn.

We had to lower our ratings for ease of washing because the lid can't be disassembled and there are many grooves on the underside of it that made it difficult to clean. Nevertheless, at only three and 1/8 inches thick when collapsed, this salad spinner is the best choice for anyone with limited storage space.

Handle Cranks Easily, but Lid Lock Requires Some Patience

This is a crank-type salad spinner with a five-quart capacity by Cuisinart. The lid comes with a drain hole that lets you strain out water while it's still attached. It also features a lockable lid to latch down the bowl while it spins, but the lock itself is a little too firm and difficult to use.

The handle is shaped to fit your hand and we loved how well we were able to grip onto it. You'll have to continue cranking the handle for this colander to keep spinning, but luckily it’ll do this with light strength. The lid can be split into three parts, but be warned that there are small parts that you can lose easily. Look over how much storage space you have first because this salad spinner may handle a lot of greens, but it is rather large.

UPPFYLLD salad spinner is a product of Swedish furniture brand IKEA. The crank handle sits directly on top of the lid. We found it unfortunate that it was small and difficult to grab hold of. It won't crank without some good effort and the bowl moves around while the colander spins.

We could put the lid on fine, but this salad spinner lost points because the edge of the lid got stuck when we tried taking it off. We also felt it was less sanitary since it can't be broken apart and the bottom has many grooves that could accumulate gunk. We did like how compact and light this salad spinner is at only 11 ounces. This option is best for anyone with limited storage space or who will need to take it with them to use outside the home.

How We Tested the Salad Spinners

Salad Spinners Evaluation

We bought 11 of the top ranking salad spinners to put them to the test and figure out which is the best of the best. To do this, mybest defined the absolute best salad spinner as one that can wick away water quickly and with little effort put in, on top of being easy to wash.

Our tests inspected the following four items.

  • How easily does it drain away water?
  • Is it easy to use?
  • Can it be washed thoroughly?

Test① Ease of Draining

Ease of Draining

If you're going to buy a salad spinner, it should get your greens as dry as possible. We tested for ease of draining to evaluate how well each product could do this. We first spun some lettuce for 15 seconds, and did a visual check to see how dry it ended up. From here, in order to create specific standardized values and qualifications for what's considered well drained, we used sponges as our baseline to rate how well each spinner can drain water.

We used the following method.

1. Soak small pieces of sponge with 5.3 ounces of water

2. Put the soaked sponges into each of the tested products and spin them for 15 seconds

3. Weigh the water that collected into the spinner bowl and give higher ratings if more water is collected

Test② Ease of Use

Ease of Use

Even if it drains well, you may not keep using it if it's a hassle. To that end, we had six reviewers test each product to give each a rating for ease of use. They focused on the following key details when giving their scores and ratings.

  • Is it easy to set up?
  • Can you make the colander spin with little effort?
  • Does it stay still when you're trying to use it?

Test③ Ease of Washing

Ease of Washing

You'll want to be particular about how easy it is to wash your salad spinner given that it's kitchenware that touches raw food you'll eat. We checked for the following key details to give each salad spinner a rating for its ease of washing next. We gave high ratings to any product designed simply to make washing every crevice easy to wash properly.

  • Is the lid easy to wash?
  • Is the bowl easy to wash?
  • Is the strainer easy to wash?
  • Is it dishwasher-safe?

Test④ Ease of Storage

Ease of Storage

A kitchen with endless storage space is only a dream, which means you'll want something that can be put away easily. We tested for ease of storage by measuring the approximate volume of each salad spinner upon storage and rated ones that are more compact with higher numbers.
