How to Choose Gel Eyeliners

When it comes to gel eyeliners, you should consider the form, how long it lasts, and if the formula is eye-safe and non-irritating, as well as the color.

1

Decide Between Pot or Pencil Gel Eyeliner

Gel eyeliners tend to come most commonly in pot or pencil form. Here are the differences between the two.

Gel Eyeliner Pots for More Control

Gel Eyeliner Pots for More Control

Gel eyeliner pots are meant to be applied with a brush. The brush helps offer precision and control over the thickness and shape of your eyeliner. Whether it be a thin wing look or a thicker smudged smokey eye look, the brush allows you a lot of artistic freedom.

If the pot you buy doesn't come with a brush, you should purchase an eyeliner brush. These come in various forms. A standard eyeliner brush is good to draw fine lines, a dome-shaped semi-flat brush is great for thicker lines, and an angled brush is ideal for drawing wings

Regardless of the type you buy, remember to regularly clean and sanitize your brush to avoid transferring harmful germs and bacteria to your eyes.

Gel Eyeliner Pencils for Easy Application

Gel Eyeliner Pencils for Easy Application

There are gel eyeliners that are like mechanical pencils that come in a retractable plastic cylinder. These kinds of liners are good for those who don't want to keep track of both a pot and brush, and is convenient for on the go. They also prevent you from wasting any product.

This type of gel liner is also great for tightlining your eyes. Tightlining is when you apply eyeliner on your water line or the rim of your upper eyelid below your lashes. However, some pencil gel liners do not have as good a color payoff as gel liners in pots.

2

Pick a Color Based on Eye Color or Personal Preference

Black and brown are the most common eyeliner colors as they offer a natural enhancement to any eye color, shape, and size. But you might want something more striking; in that case, consider colored options.

Neutrals Offer Versatility, Colors Offer Impact

Neutrals Offer Versatility, Colors Offer Impact

If you're looking for an everyday, natural eyeliner, neutral shades such as black and brown will offer an enhancement to your features. Colors like dark browns, grays, and greens are suitable for lining your eyes to achieve a softer look.

If you want to add subtle color to your everyday eye makeup routine, you can explore royal blue or purple eyeliners. These colors can help you achieve a natural look while still offering a unique element of color.

If you want something a bit flashier, you can also experiment with colors like metallics and bright colors. Metallic hues such as gold and silver will pop and brighter or even neon colors such as yellow, green, or pink can be fun pops of color. Experiment with different bright colors to know which one you like best.

Consider a Shade That Compliments Your Eye Color

Consider a Shade That Compliments Your Eye Color

Brown eyes can be easily paired with all colors, but they are especially great with earthy brown shades. These colors are great for achieving a natural, rich yet subtle look. If you're looking to make your brown eyes pop, go for dark blue, deep purple, cobalt, gray, or emerald green.

If you have hazel eyes, you can choose to accent either the brown or green in them by using brown or metallic liners with shades of bronze and copper. If you're looking to bring out the natural green tone in your eyes, shades like plum and gray are good.

If you have blue eyes, copper, gold, champagne and brown will magnify and complement your eyes and make them more vibrant. Dark blue shades will make your eyes look a lot deeper, and dark green shades will bring out any golden specks in them.

For gray eyes, warm browns and reds will do a great job to bring out your eye color, as well as white and silver liners. These colors will help in lightening and brightening your eyes, highlighting the gray in them.

If you have green eyes, colors like mahogany or burgundy work well to compliment them. When using red-toned eyeliners, it is advisable to line your lid first with black eyeliner to avoid making your eyes look tired.

Your eyes play an important role in makeup and should stand out. A warm brown or dark brown liner would flatter a blue/gray eye color. Blue eyes have three different colors - a light blue, a gray-blue, or dark blue. Warm colors that have orange hues or deep browns are the best color options.

When you look at the color wheel, you see that the opposite side is on the warm orange to peachy shades. For liner, it is best to stick to a brown, but if you want to accentuate blue eyes even more, add some peachy pink shadows to the crease.

3

Consider a Waterproof Eyeliner for Longer Wear

Consider a Waterproof Eyeliner for Longer Wear

If you're looking for an eyeliner that won't smudge and run after a long day, consider waterproof eyeliners. They can withstand any weather, and are especially good during summer or when you're sweating and doing outdoor activities.

Although they can be a pain to remove, you can trust these types of liners to stay in place the whole day and night without fading, smudging, and blending in with the rest of your makeup. Look for effective makeup removers like cleansing oils and balms to easily remove waterproof eyeliners.

Natalya Lowe
Professional Makeup Artist
Natalya Lowe

You can never go wrong with a waterproof liner. A regular liner can run on you if you were to cry or sweat, and that could ruin your whole look for the day. If you have watery eyes, a waterproof would be the liner for you. Waterproof liners are recommended for brides and bridesmaids who may end up tearing up during the ceremony.

We want to dance without worrying about our liner sweating off, we want to be cautious about the weather in case there is rain in the forecast, and we want to cry without running liner. Oily skin can cause the liner to run as well, so you want a waterproof liner that won't budge on you throughout the day. If you need to correct the waterproof liner, take a Q-tip dampened with water to ease any mistakes.

4

Look for Non-Irritating Ingredients

Look for Non-Irritating Ingredients

The eyes are one of the most sensitive parts of our bodies. The skin around them is significantly thinner and more delicate than any other skin on our body. In choosing the right eyeliner, you definitely want to go for products that will not harm or irritate your eyes. Try to avoid eyeliners with fragrance, which can cause itching and irritation in some people.

Also, be cautious of eyeliners with prime yellow carnauba wax. This is used to keep the shape of products and make them waterproof. However, it can cause clogging of oil glands and cause your eyes to dry. An alternative to this is microcrystalline wax, which is softer on the skin, non-toxic, and non-carcinogenic.

Chemicals like parabens are used as a preservative to prevent the growth of bacteria in cosmetics. There is still no concrete evidence that parabens can harm your health. However, many people are worried that they can cause reproductive system issues. If you are concerned about this, it is better to go for paraben-free eyeliners.

Natalya's Recommended Gel Eyeliner

Natalya Lowe
Professional Makeup Artist
Natalya Lowe

The Pro Longwear Fluid Line gel eyeliner by MAC Cosmetics is definitely my go-to liner for myself and my clients. This is a foolproof liner that has a creamy texture. I love using this on my brides because it is waterproof and lasts up to 16 hours. Use a liner brush to get a sharp wing.

This is smudge-proof, but if you want a smokey liner look, blend it right away with a small blending brush. A lot of my clients ask me what liner I use, and I always refer this product to them because it has never done me wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

In addition to checking our Buying Guide for accuracy, Natalya took the time to answer some commonly asked questions about gel eyeliners.

How do I apply gel eyeliner?

Natalya explains, "It is very important that eyeliner is applied after eyeshadow and before mascara. Eyeliner can be thick or thin or have a hard or soft edge, so you have choices when it comes to eyeliner applications. It takes practice to get a clean, even eyeliner look.

You should apply eyeliner with one open eye to see the application. Do not pull the eyelid up as it will distort the shape of the eye and create an uneven application. It may be best to hold a mirror below eye level to let the slightly open eye see the application more easily.

Gel liner is best applied with a small liner brush that is thin enough to create the look you want. Place the brush flat against the lashes and drag the brush along the lash line so there is no space between the line and lash. The fewer the strokes, the easier. Rest your pinky finger on your cheek to have a steady hand.

Liner should be applied on the lash line and follow the contour of the eye. Start from the center of the lid to the outer corner, which should be its thickest point. Apply more thinly from the inner corner to the center of the lid."

What are some benefits of gel eyeliner?

"A gel liner creates a hard, defined line that is solid in color," Natalya says. "When it is dry, it has a long-lasting quality. A gel liner can create a hard edge but can also create a smokey liner if blended right away.

A gel liner is the most pigmented and will last you the longest throughout the day. You do not run the risk of it drying out over time unless you don't tighten the cap on properly or are in wet weather conditions."
