Face washes for oily skin are designed for people whose skin produces excess sebum, resulting in a greasy or shiny complexion. With the right product to wash away these excess oils, you’ll benefit from fewer clogged pores and subsequent breakouts. However, with numerous brands like Clinique, CeraVe, La Roche-Posay, Neutrogena, Kiehl's, and many more selling a variety of products all promising to solve your oily skin troubles, how do you know which to pick? Which best controls oil and shine, and are there options for even the most sensitive skin?
For this guide, we gathered 12 popular face washes for oily skin, ranging from trending products to all-time top sellers, and thoroughly tested them under six comparison points. We then ranked them in order based on our recommendations.

Fortunately, you can prevent both issues with proper care, such as using targeted facie washes. Don’t miss our ranking in the following section to find your ideal product.
When choosing a face wash for oily skin, ethnicity plays a very minor contributory role. While there may be some variations in skin types, if you have oily skin, please follow the guidelines in this article regardless of race.
Besides having naturally oily skin that produces a lot of sebum, the root cause of excessive sebum production comes from hormonal changes and eating a diet high in fat.
The hormonal balance affected by the menstrual cycle naturally leads to an increase in sebum production, particularly in those between 10 and 20 years old, making them more prone to acne.
Moreover, a diet high in fat can also increase sebum production. Since digesting fats consumes large amounts of vitamin B, which controls sebum secretion, those who want to control oily skin and acne should also look at their diet and see if any changes can be made.
Many of us would assume face washes for oily skin clean so well that the skin ends up feeling tight and even a little uncomfortable. This actually rang true during our tests, as none of the products we tried left the skin feeling moisturized enough to impress us.
That being said, since face washes for oily skin are designed to thoroughly wash away excess sebum, some tautness can’t be helped. You can minimize this by making sure to hydrate your skin with a toner immediately after washing and then finishing with a suitable moisturizer.
Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Face Washes for Oily Skin.
Of the products we tested for this content, none of them showed particularly high cleansing power. However, some performed better than others.
To help find which were best at cleansing away sebum, we had Cosmetic Chemist Natalie Cox look at each product’s formula list and evaluate which were most abundant in acne-care and sebum-control ingredients. Find out which she recommends below.
As mentioned, the overall results of our cleaning power tests were somewhat disappointing. When we dissolved the cleansers in lukewarm water and used them to wash a glass slide, many left a thick layer of grease behind. On the face, therefore, they also wouldn’t remove sebum dirt effectively.
Since we know that excess sebum can clog the pores and cause acne if not washed away thoroughly, it’s best to avoid products that scored lower than 3.50 in our cleaning power tests.
While a key factor, caring for oily skin isn’t just about washing off excess sebum. It’s also important to stave off acne and control the sebum balance with the right ingredients.
Salicylic acid, for example, is an acne-care ingredient that also takes care of keratin. Salicylic acid removes old keratin from the skin's surface, preventing clogged pores that often lead to pimples.
Niacinamide, which reinforces the skin’s barrier and acts as an anti-inflammatory, and PCA zinc, which suppresses the secretion of excess sebum that causes pimples, are also known for their acne-prevention effects.
Mud derivatives, such as silica, are also efficient at sebum control. By absorbing and washing away excess sebum, they help to prevent clogged pores and acne.
Zinc gluconate is another great ingredient for sebum regulation, adjusting the balance of moisture and oil to control the amount of sebum secretion.
When looking over our ranking, check which products contain these recommended ingredients for acne care and sebum control.
Also, pay attention to the cleaning power of a face wash’s cleansing ingredients. If you use something too stimulating, it could actually increase sebum production in order to protect the skin, so it's best to stay away from these.
We recommend using less irritating options like Cocamidopropyl Betaine from the amphoteric ion series, or Sodium Lauroyl Methylaminopropionate from the amino acid series.
Make sure to check the main cleansing ingredient on the ranking list.
Retinol-based serums can also help balance sebum levels. You can apply them to specific areas where oil or shine is a concern, such as the area around the nose (excluding the folds) and the T-zone. For this reason, they are ideal for combination skin as well.
Like all skin types, oily skin can be prone to sensitivity. So it’s normal to worry whether, with their strong cleansing power, using a face wash for oily skin could cause irritation.
But what you should be careful of is not the cleansing power but whether the product contains fragrances. Some fragrances are extracted using ethanol, which can aggravate sensitive skin.
If you have sensitive skin, be sure to check which products in our ranking are fragrance-free.
Be careful with keratin-care ingredients such as salicylic acid, as these can cause irritation for those with sensitive skin.
Do you skip on a proper morning cleansing routine, thinking your skin can’t be that dirty just from sleeping?
Even while you sleep, the skin sweats and secretes sebum, and dirt can build up on your face. This is particularly true for people with oily skin since the sebum secreted at night is a major enemy. So, it’s just as important to use a face wash in the morning to cleanse away excess sebum and grime thoroughly.
However, many of us are short on time in the morning, while others might just find the whole cleansing process a hassle. If this sounds familiar, we recommend going for either foam products with a pump dispenser or gel cleansers that don't need lathering. Both save you the time and trouble of creating the foam yourself. Plus, they’re easier to use.
To find these products in our ranking, look at whether the 'Lathering Not Required' box is checked.

CeraVe's Foaming Facial Cleanser washes away excess sebum with a gentle foaming action, keeping the skin healthy.
Among the products we tested, it had a decent amount of cleansing power. It contains an abundance of acne-care ingredients, so those troubled by oiliness, pimples, or large pores should give it a try.
It also uses gentle cleansing components, promising to suppress sebum overproduction without irritation, and has very little scent. However, unfortunately, it does contain preservatives that can easily trouble sensitive skin.
On the plus side, our testers loved the after-wash feel, commenting that it cleaned thoroughly with no tightness after rinsing off.
Washing away excess sebum while offering a refreshing, clean finish with minimal tightness or an overly strong scent makes this our best-buy cleanser for oily skin.

La Roche-Posay's Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel Cleanser for Oily Skin claims to wash away dirt and excess sebum without excessively drying out the skin. Notably, compared to other products we tested, its cleansing power did receive a high score.
As for the formula, we were pleased to see it contains PCA zinc, which suppresses excessive sebum secretion to reduce pimples and help prevent other skin troubles. However, the fact that it's scented is not ideal for those with very sensitive skin, so use it with care if you’re easily irritated.
Testers mentioned their skin feeling refreshed and not too tight after washing off, despite a bit of dryness. Also, its scent was pleasant and could appeal to many with its fresh, plant-based fragrance.
With decent cleansing power and ingredients useful for sebum control and other skin issues, this is a great option for those with oily skin.

Vichy Laboratories' Normaderm PhytoAction Daily Deep Cleansing Gel is a lather-free option that aims to wash away excess sebum while balancing the skin’s moisture and oil levels with zinc gluconate.
It’s also rich in ingredients known to be effective for textured skin, including exfoliating salicylic acid and probiotics.
As well as scoring fairly well in our cleansing tests, 90% rated it as satisfying or very satisfying for its feel post-wash. The lack of unpleasant odor also scored highly. Although the official product details don't specify the scent, users have reported a mint-like or fruity fragrance.
The balancing formula and other ingredients make this a good choice for not just oily complexions but also combination or textured skin. The non-foaming gel formula will speed up your morning routine, too.

Cetaphil's DermaControl Oil Removing Foam Wash promises to remove excess sebum, dirt, and makeup that could clog pores, without overly drying out the skin.
Looking at the formula, it contains an anti-inflammatory ingredient (glycyrrhizin), so we can expect it to calm redness and irritation and help maintain healthy skin. Be aware there are added fragrances, though.
This cleanser ranked well in the cleansing power tests, coming third out of our product selection. It also received good scores for gentleness and scent. And with its pump dispenser, it’s a good choice if you want something quick and fuss-free on busy mornings.

Another fuss-free pump option, Neutrogena's Oil-Free Acne Wash is formulated to not only thoroughly cleanse pores but also prevent skin irritation.
It combines exfoliating salicylic acid with aloe vera leaf and chamomile flower extracts to reduce skin irritation, making this a promising product for calming acne-induced redness or inflammation and maintaining healthy skin overall. In fact, it came first in our acne care ingredient analysis test.
The fragrance is pleasant and reminiscent of soap, but this addition could cause issues for those with very sensitive skin.
Finally, while the cleansing power isn’t too low, feedback from our testers included comments like "It makes my skin feel dry and tight." If this concerns you, be sure to follow up with a good moisturizer.

Clinique's Acne Solutions™ Cleansing Foam is another acne-focused product formulated with salicylic acid and oil-fighting ingredients as well as anti-irritants. However, it contains preservatives unsuitable for sensitive skin, resulting in a slight markdown in this category.
With its foam-dispensing pump, lathering requires zero effort, although some testers commented that the foam dissipates quickly. The after-wash feel is also not so refreshing, with a noticeable smell of alcohol.
On the other hand, among the products we tested, it has fairly decent cleaning power. It doesn't remove all types of sebum dirt, but it should cleanse away most excess oil.

Farmacy’s Whipped Greens Oil-Free Foaming Cleanser uses papaya enzyme as its exfoliant as well as green clay and other plant-based ingredients to remove pore impurities and oils without stripping skin of its natural moisture.
When looking at the formula, we can see that it’s rich in acne-care and oil-control ingredients and doesn't appear to contain any irritants that could inflame sensitive skin. The fresh scent is a plus too, with hints of mint and lemon.
While it cleaned off well with no residue, some users reported a slight tightness, so be careful not to overwash. However, it didn't perform as well as expected in the cleansing power tests. This product might not be suitable for males, who generally have higher sebum levels than females, or for teens, whose skin also tends to produce more sebum.

If you’re looking for a thoroughly deep cleanse, Olay’s Regenerist Detoxifying Pore Scrub may be for you. With hydrated silica for dirt and oil removal along with salicylic acid, it promises to reveal smoother, brighter skin and reduce the appearance of pores.
During our tests, opinions were divided about the after-wash feel. There were, however, many positive comments about its fresh, appealing scent. But for those with sensitive skin, the heavy use of fragrance and preservatives could cause some issues.
Moreover, while its cleaning power wasn’t too bad, it did leave behind some stickiness.

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Oil-Free Cleanser is a lightweight foam that removes dirt and excess sebum to maintain healthy, fresh-feeling skin. A highlight is the inclusion of salicylic acid and kaolin clay, both of which should absorb sebum, reduce shine, and result in a balanced, smooth complexion.
The charm of this product is its fresh finish, leaving no stickiness behind. However, during our tests, it didn't fully remove grease from the skin, yielding somewhat disappointing results. However, it received high praise for its gentleness and is completely fragrance-free, so it shouldn’t irritate those with sensitivities.
Some reviewers felt that it dried out their skin, so we recommend this cleanser only if you like a very clean wash.

The INKEY List's Salicylic Acid Cleanser lifts and removes makeup and dirt, while its absorbent ingredients control excess sebum for a fresh, clear complexion.
There don’t appear to be any ingredients that could trouble sensitive skin, earning it high marks for gentleness. It’s also packed with acne-care ingredients, such as texture-smoothing tocopherol, PCA zinc to control excess sebum secretion and salicylic acid.
However, its low cleansing power won’t be ideal for men or teens, who tend to have a higher sebum secretion.
As it's fragrance-free, it has practically no scent, although some testers thought it smelled like plastic. Others also mentioned that their skin felt a bit slimy after washing off. To avoid this, make sure to rinse well with lukewarm water so no residue is left behind.

The Ordinary's Glucoside Foaming Cleanser is formulated to thoroughly remove dirt from the skin with its gel-to-foam formula, all while retaining the skin's moisture levels.
Upon testing, its cleansing power wasn't great, so it won’t be suitable if you have a particularly high amount of sebum and shine. It also has a distinct chemical-like scent, which many of our testers found unpleasant.
While it didn’t leave behind any residue after washing off, there were comments that the skin felt tight in certain areas. Just be sure to moisturize thoroughly afterward.
This cleanser scored highly for gentleness on the skin, as there are hardly any ingredients that could irritate sensitive skin. Also, it packs in a good amount of acne-care ingredients. This could be worth a try if you only have slightly oily or combination skin.

Origins’ Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash removes excess oil with its rich foam and promises to leave the skin smooth.
Plus points of this product are the inclusion of several acne-care ingredients, including tocopherol for healthy skin, as well as non-irritating cleansing components that can help prevent excessive sebum secretion.
Unfortunately, its cleansing power was disappointing, and failed to remove grease effectively. If you have very oily skin, you might want to skip this one. It also contains fragrances, so it’s not ideal for sensitive skin types either.
As for the scent, reviews were mixed. Some testers enjoyed the fresh minty scent, while others found it too similar to toothpaste. While the scent might not be for everyone, it does leave you feeling refreshed!

At mybest, we define the best facial cleanser for oily skin as a product that effectively removes excess oil, contains acne-care ingredients, and leaves no tightness or unpleasant smell after washing.
In order to find this ideal face wash for oily skin, we gathered 12 popular products and thoroughly tested them on the following six points:
Products we tested
We set the standard for a product with exceptional cleaning power as one that effectively removes sebum dirt. We evaluated each product using the following methods.
1. Apply artificial, red-colored sebum to a glass slide with a brush and leave it for over four hours.
2. Measure with a precision scale.
3. Take 10 ml of each facial cleanser for oily skin and dissolve it in 300 ml of 38-degree hot water.
4. Swirl the glass for two minutes (at a rate of about one revolution per second).
5. Rinse seven times with water (if there are any remaining bubbles, keep rinsing until they disappear).
6. Leave it for over six hours for the water to evaporate.
7. Measure the fully dry glass as the post-wash value, and compare it to the pre-wash value.
8. Measure each product five times.
Products with a larger difference between the pre-wash and post-wash measurements received higher ratings.
For this test, female and male testers in their 20s and 30s evaluated each product on how it left their skin feeling after use. Here are the methods we used:
We used the product instead of our usual face wash and evaluated its effectiveness after washing. We then quantified the recommendation level of each product into scores.
We had testers swap their usual facial cleanser for each of the products and mention whether they found the scent unpleasant. We then scored each product's recommendation level.
We set the standard for a highly gentle face wash as one containing few ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin as well as ingredients that prevent skin irritation. We tested each product using the following methods.
Natalie Cox, a Cosmetic Chemist, checked whether the product is suitable for sensitive skin based on the presence or absence of skin irritation prevention ingredients and those that can irritate sensitive skin.
For this category, the criteria for ultimate user satisfaction was to include ingredients with known positive effects on acne. We evaluated each product in the following way.
Cosmetic Chemist, Natalie Cox, has checked whether the ingredient composition is effective for acne care.
We set the standard for a product to be very satisfactory regarding sebum control as one that contains cleansing ingredients that are less likely to irritate, can prevent excessive sebum secretion, and includes ingredients with sebum-controlling effects. We tested each product using this definition as a guide.
Cosmetic Chemist Natalie Cox checked whether we could expect the ingredient composition to be effective in sebum control.
You can check if you have oily skin or combination skin using the following method:
1. Wash your face using a facial cleanser
2. Leave it for an hour without applying any other skincare
3. Touch your skin to see where it feels oily, as below
If your skin feels shiny or greasy all over, you have oily skin. If your nose or T-zone is oily but the area around your eyes or mouth is dry, you likely have combination skin.
A. Yes, you can inherit oily skin, but there are many other causes too.
It is said that the amount of sebum a person produces is inherited. However, excessive sebum levels are not just because of genetics but can come from lifestyle habits and stress too. Therefore, just because you don't come from a line of oily skin, it doesn't necessarily mean you won't overproduce sebum.
A. Avoid comedogenic ingredients that clog the pores
Comedogenic refers to ingredients that can clog pores. They’re often found in facial moisturizers and creams, but people with oily skin should avoid them. Head to the ‘non-comedogenic’ section of this article to learn more.
Examples of comedogenic ingredients:
