Okay-to-wake alarms, on the other hand, are aimed more at younger children who have trouble sleeping through the night, wake up too early, or sleep restlessly. These employ lights that turn on when it’s time to wake up, which makes it easy for kids to quickly see whether they should close their eyes again or if it’s okay to get out of bed.
These may not be best for kids who have to get up by a certain time, but they can work for kids who are more sensitive to sensory input. Many kids’ alarm clocks integrate both functions to allow clocks to grow with the needs of the child.
Digital clocks are an all-around strong choice as they can be used as soon as a child begins to learn their numbers and for years to come. Digital clocks can also display more information such as the date and weather.
Analog clocks may not be very relevant anymore, but they’re great for teaching kids to tell time.
For kids who aren’t comfortable in the dark, look for an alarm with a built-in night light. These often have timers that will turn the light off after a certain amount of time, and many also feature color changing functions.

If a child has a hard time getting up, the first thing you should do is look at the quality of their sleep. Kids need up to 10 hours of well-rested sleep every night, so after checking that timing is adequate, consider other factors like too much light, snoring siblings, and too much screen time before bed.
Another way to make mornings easier is by building in padding to wake up times. That is, set their alarm for 15 minutes to half an hour earlier than necessary. This gives them time to get out of bed without having to rush if they’re a little slow.
Shift your loud chores to the morning. If you’re vacuuming or shuffling around their room to grab dirty laundry, they’re (hopefully) going to have trouble falling back asleep after their alarm goes off.
