How to Choose a Makeup Setting Spray - Buying Guide

Makeup setting sprays only have to do one thing: help your makeup look better. What "better" means is up to you. Whether it's helping makeup last, improving the look of your application, or assisting with skincare, we're here to help you pick the best setting spray! Just keep these five points in mind as you choose a makeup setting spray.

1

Look for a Setting Spray That Will Allow You to Set it and Forget it

A makeup setting spray is designed to make your life easier. The best products let you spritz away without worry.

Choose a Spray That's Long-Lasting and Requires Minimal Reapplication

Choose a Spray That's Long-Lasting and Requires Minimal Reapplication

Look for a spray with longevity that matches your lifestyle. For special occasions like weddings, longevity is the most important! Wear time should exceed 12 hours so you can be completely worry-free during your special event and don't have the hassle of taking your setting spray with you.

For everyday wear, consider how often you want to refresh your look. A long-wearing formula means one spray in the morning, and you're good to go. A shorter-wearing formula gives you the flexibility to refresh your look as you please. Some setting-sprays can also be refreshing and add extra moisture to your skin so spraying them throughout the day can help you feel fresh!

Find a Setting Spray That Looks and Feels Invisible

Find a Setting Spray That Looks and Feels Invisible

A setting spray is designed to keep your makeup looking flawless. This means the formula should be light so it doesn't make your makeup run. You also don't want the spray to settle into your pores, as this could cause blemishes, excessive oil production, or give your makeup a cakey and powdered look.

The spray should also feel invisible once it has settled onto your skin. No one likes walking around with sticky skin or a strong chemical odor, especially for a product that's going to be on your skin all day! Look for formulas designed with skincare in mind that spray in a fine mist for even coverage. Water-based sprays are especially light, but sprays with other ingredients can be too. Check reviews to see what users of the spray think.

2

Check the Formula: Shielding or Setting

Makeup setting sprays fall into two categories: shielding or setting. Each type of formula comes with benefits and drawbacks.

Choose Shielding Formulas for Longevity and Setting for Skincare

Choose Shielding Formulas for Longevity and Setting for Skincare

Shielding products create a smooth barrier on your skin to prevent makeup from being affected by sweating or smudging. They are typically made of long molecules called polymers in an alcohol-based solution. These polymers stick together to form a layer on your skin that acts as shield, similar to how hairspray protects your hairstyle.

Setting products improve the texture of your makeup, making it look more blended. These types of products can help you makeup last longer, but not as well as the shielding formulas. However, setting-type sprays can be more moisturizing and typically use less alcohol (or none at all!).

Check the Ingredients to Determine the Formula

Check the Ingredients to Determine the Formula

Both types of sprays are given all sorts of names, so you might be confused as to whether a product is for shielding or is for setting. Don’t worry, there's an easy way to find out! Just check the ingredients to see what kind of product you have.

If you’re really seeking to lock down your look, pick a spray with shielding power. Look for those helpful polymers in the first few listed ingredients. PVP is the most common, but you will also see the words "polymer" or "copolymer." If you want a lighter formula that's gentler on skin, choose a setting product without polymers and minimal alcohol.

3

Pick a Spray That Complements Your Skin Type

Skin type is one of the most important aspects to consider when choosing a setting spray. One setting spray might be perfect for someone with oily skin but a nightmare for someone with dry skin!

Dry Skin Loves Extra Moisture

Dry Skin Loves Extra Moisture

Dry skin will benefit from a dewy finish that makes skin look healthy and brightened. Lots of moisturizing ingredients like oils, butters, or aloe will keep dry skin happy all day.

If you have dry skin, we recommend choosing a spray with a low alcohol content to avoid extra dryness, and consider a setting-type spray that will allow you to reapply whenever you feel your skin drying out.

Oily Skin Craves Shine Control

Oily Skin Craves Shine Control

Oily skin will look best with a strong mattifying formula that doesn’t add extra shine, shimmer, or too much moisture. Consider sprays that use oil-absorbing ingredients like clay or charcoal for extra power against shine.

We also highly recommend looking for “noncomedogenic” formulas, which essentially means it won’t clog pores! Oily skin will also be able to handle alcohol-based products, which helps your setting spray last longer.

Combination Skin Benefits from a Balanced Formula

Combination Skin Benefits from a Balanced Formula

Those with combination skin should look for a setting spray with a matte finish to combat any oil with light moisturizing properties. Sprays designed for dry skin may be too moisturizing, so consider a shielding spray to avoid unwanted shine.

If you still want some hydration to help with those dry spots, choose a light formula with a moisturizer like aloe that should be gentle enough not to add oil.

Sensitive Skin Requires Gentle Nourishment

Sensitive Skin Requires Gentle Nourishment

People with sensitive skin should veer toward sprays that use natural and calming ingredients like chamomile, rosewater, or aloe. These can also help prevent and reduce redness.

Avoid strong fragrances and high alcohol content that might irritate skin. Look for products with non-comedogenic formulas that won't clog pores or hypoallergenic formulas that don't include common skin allergens.

Sensitive skin can be finicky, so avoid shielding sprays that commit you to all-day wear. Gentler, setting-type sprays with shorter longevity will naturally wear off.  You can let your skin breathe a little without removing all of your makeup and these can always be reapplied as needed.

4

Choose Ingredients That Benefit Your Skin

For any kind of cosmetic, it's important to understand what is actually in the product. Setting spray stays on your skin for long periods of time, so choose a formula that will help your skin stay healthy.

Many Setting Sprays Assist With Skincare Concerns

Many Setting Sprays Assist With Skincare Concerns

Nowadays, makeup setting sprays often double as skincare. Nourished skin also makes makeup look better, so it makes sense that setting sprays often have formulas made with skincare in mind. For example, hydrated skin prevents makeup from looking cakey or powdery.

Concerned with redness? Look for anti-inflammatory chamomile or witch hazel. Have puffy skin? Caffeine restricts blood vessels, reducing puffiness. Worried about wrinkles? SPF is a must to prevent your skin from aging prematurely.

Avoid Known Irritants That Dry Out Skin

Avoid Known Irritants That Dry Out Skin

Companies should be candid about what they put into their products and, perhaps more importantly, what they leave out. For example, sulfates are a cleansing agent that can strip away your skin's natural oils, and this in turn can lead to dryness and irritation. Phthalates (also listed as DHEP or DiBP) make plastics in products pliable, and there is concern about their effect on our hormonal systems.

Want a fragrance for your setting spray but are concerned about unnecessary chemicals? Choose a setting spray with natural ingredients that smell great like citrus, tea, or mint. You'll get a little mood boost every time you apply it without inhaling artificial or overpowering fragrances.

5

Look for a Multi-Purpose Setting Spray to Reduce Clutter

Look for a Multi-Purpose Setting Spray to Reduce Clutter

Setting sprays are meant to help makeup last, but for many products, that's not all they can do! Who doesn't want a simpler makeup routine? Many setting sprays now double (or triple!) as other products. Common multi-use products also work as a primer, a correction spray, moisturizer, or skin refresher.

Having a setting spray that is versatile can simplify your morning routine while also saving space and money. Now there's one less bottle on your bathroom counter and one less product you have to buy! Some sprays even have the vital benefit of SPF and can protect your skin from the sun.

Multipurpose sprays that have natural healthy ingredients will help with protecting your skin from clogged pores, breakouts, and UV rays. Your skin will thank you when you use products to help the skin instead of products that are heavy and sticky on the skin. Certain sprays can save you time and money.

Best Setting Spray for Everyday Long-Lasting Wear

This oil and paraben-free setting spray will keep your makeup looking fresh all day (and night). It's also suitable for all skin types, but those with dry skin may benefit from a more moisturizing product. This setting spray comes in on top when it comes to longevity as it can last for up to 16 hours.

Some reviewers had a hard time with the smell of the product, but many more loved how long-lasting it was. Reviewers claimed that it can survive sweating from hot and humid weather and even a lot of crying. Many reviewers consider this the "Holy Grail" of setting sprays, saying that even 16 hours later their makeup looks on point.

An All-in-One Spray That Gets the Job Done

This vegan and cruelty-free makeup setting spray can simplify your makeup routine. Not only can you also use it as a primer, but you can also wear it on naked skin to help control shine! The correction properties also make foundation appear smooth, even if your application was imperfect.

Some reviewers thought that the bottle sprayed too much at one time. However, reviewers with oily skin loved how well this product combatted shine and how it stuck even in humid weather. They say that it made their makeup look matte but also takes away the powdery effect that can linger once makeup is applied.

99.9% Naturally Made and Intensively Moisturizing

This unique setting spray is made of natural ingredients that leave skin dewy and glowing! While it won't lock down your makeup as long as other products, it's light enough to be reapplied whenever you feel your skin getting dry. The oil-based formula deeply moisturizes, is gentle enough for sensitive skin, and is the best choice for natural hydration.

One reviewer thought the packaging was small and could be used up too quickly. However, more reviewers loved how quickly it made their skin feel moisturized. For the best application, reviewers recommend that you shake the bottle well so the oils can mix into the fruit water base to avoid droplets of oil on your skin.

A Smudge-Free and Oil-Controlled Finish

This hypoallergenic setting spray is a godsend for those with oily skin! This brand uses "cool" technology, which draws heat away from your skin as it evaporates. This prevents smudging from extra sweating or oil. You can count on this product to absorb excess oil all day, and there's no need to reapply. It's also great in humid weather to prevent makeup from melting.

Some reviewers found that the spray can sting your eyes when used, so be careful when applying it! But more reviewers applauded how well this product worked with their oily skin, noting that they could go all day without having to dab off excess oil or do touch-ups. Reviewers also say that it can help ensure their makeup has a flawless finish.

Works as Both a Primer and Setting Spray

This setting spray is cruelty-free and vegan and is also free from parabens, alcohol, and oils. It serves many different purposes as it can be used as a primer, as well as a setting spray and makeup fixer. As it's water-based, it is light and refreshing on the skin as well as being fast-drying.

Some reviewers say that this spray irritated their skin, so if you have sensitive skin you should patch test it first before spraying your full face. Many reviewers say that it does give a dewy finish and keeps their makeup fresh throughout the day. They like that it can be used as both a primer and setting spray and only a small amount is needed.

UV-Protection in a Convenient Package

A setting spray with SPF is the ideal way to get that vital UV protection without messing up your look. The added hyaluronic acid binds moisture to the skin, keeping your face hydrated even on the sunniest of days. Be sure to reapply it at least every two hours if you're using it for UV-protection and reapply after swimming, too.

Reviewers warned that the product has a strong smell when first applied. The nozzle may also get clogged if the product is unused for a few days, so be wary if you're not planning to use it consistently. On the other hand, reviewers loved that it protected their skin and was easily reapplied without ruining their makeup. Even if they were sweating, it didn't smear makeup like traditional sunscreens.

Rejuvenate Your Tired Skin With This Setting Spray

On those days when you just didn't get enough sleep, you can reach for this setting spray to refresh dull and dry skin. This Hollywood favorite uses caffeine to improve the appearance of your skin. It restricts blood vessels, helping to fight that dreaded morning puffiness and redness.

Some reviewers felt like this product did not work well on wrinkles, and accentuated age. Some also said that it may be too shiny for those with oily skin. However, most reviewers love that this product gives their skin a healthy glow. You can even keep the bottle in the fridge for a cooling effect to help you wake up in the morning!

A Heavy-Duty Setting Spray for Dramatic Makeup

Cosplayers, performers, actors, and brides all turn to this setting spray to keep their makeup pristine. It's simple, but it gets the job done. You won't find any oils or extracts here! It can also be used before makeup application to create a smooth base. For extreme makeup looks, this base can protect skin from adhesives and stains

This isn't a product for delicate skin or everyday wear, since some reviewers complained about it breaking out their sensitive skin, but it is a great choice for special occasions or dramatic makeup. Reviewers said that even in scalding heat, their makeup stayed put! For extra protection, some reviewers sprayed on an extra coat.

Get Two Different Finishes With This Duo

Sometimes it's hard to classify your skin as just one type and this duo of setting sprays gives you the flexibility to choose the right finish - matte or dewy - no matter the situation. Both of these sprays are applauded for their long-wearing formulas, which keep colors bright and foundation smooth. However, the formulas are simple and lack the nourishing ingredients needed for sensitive or extremely dry skin.

Some reviewers didn't like how the makeup still came off if you touched your face after using the setting spray. On the flip side, reviewers loved that they performed just as well as more expensive products at a fraction of the cost! They're also sold separately in case you want just the matte or dewy finish and don't need both.

Lessens the Appearance of Fine Lines on Aging Skin

Setting sprays are helpful for everyone's makeup routine but some products can be too drying for more mature skin. The MSM (a natural sulfur compound) included in this spray helps moisture lock deep into the skin, while DMAE (a fruit acid) assists with skin elasticity. These ingredients, along with green tea, can help lessen the appearance of fine lines and improve skin texture.

A few reviewers mentioned that this product did not work well with sensitive or oily skin. Reviewers loved how it smoothed the appearance of makeup and enjoyed the weightless feel of this product. Their makeup stayed in place even though the formula is gentle on their skin. They liked the smell of the spray and say it is both refreshing and moisturizing.

Natalya's Recommended Setting Sprays

Natalya's Recommended Setting Sprays
I recently found two setting sprays that are great for both dry and oily skin. One of the top setting sprays Makeup Designory suggests is the Ben Nye Matte Makeup Sealer in the blue bottle. With this product, you should moisturize your skin before the makeup application for the best result. This product is water-resistant and will hold your look for hours in all types of weather.

Another setting spray that has recently been a top pick of mine is the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless setting spray. It is an oil-free, lightweight setting and primer spray. On the bottle, it says it holds up to 16 hours, and I find that to be very true. These setting sprays hold great for weddings and long hot days.

I also found that the Mario Badescu facial sprays are great for a prime and setting spray. My favorite one is the rosewater spray with aloe and herbs. It is a multipurpose mist to revive dry skin and add a dewy natural glow. This also boosts the skin's clarity and re-energizes the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

In addition to reviewing and commenting on our buying guide, Natalya also took the time to answer some commonly-asked question about makeup setting sprays.

What does setting spray do?

"For hot days, a setting spray is a must," Natalya says. "Setting sprays lock your makeup in place and are sure to keep your foundation from lifting, smudging or fading if you touch your face, and even protects from tears.

For long days with makeup on, a setting spray should be applied all over the skin to not only set your foundation, but your eyeshadows, brows, and lips. Setting sprays are made to prolong the life of your makeup."

Should I use setting spray before or after powder?

"Spraying setting spray before powder will protect the skin underneath and will not affect the makeup in a bad way. It can help create a longer lasting hold. Spraying a setting spray afterwards will help with taking away the powdery or cakey look and blend your foundation smoothly. Spraying the setting spray before and after powder are both recommended," Natalya points out.

Is makeup setting spray necessary?

"For long days wearing makeup, a setting spray is necessary if you want your look to last and stay flawless. For those with drier skin, a setting spray is necessary for adding back that natural glow that looks healthy and moisturized.

It is a great step to add to your makeup routine to save time by not reapplying product that was worn off, which in the end saves money by not having to reapply an expensive foundation, eye look or lip." Overall, Natalya says, "Setting sprays act as a blanket to make sure that the activities you do throughout the day will not affect your makeup from leaving the places you need it to last."
