Before purchasing your toilet deodorizer, we would like you to consider the following four points.
Odors arise because of a number of different reasons.
Most bathroom odors are caused by nitrogen compounds like ammonia or sulfuric compounds like hydrogen sulfide. Toilet deodorizers are specifically manufactured to deal with these types of odors so they would be wisest to choose.
For those of you wishing to freshen up your whole bathroom space and rid it of unwanted odors, we recommend getting a stand-up type.
Stand-up toilet deodorizers come in liquid, bead, and gel types, so you can choose the one that's right for you. Some come in the form of well-designed bottles or card-types, allowing you to choose the one that best accents your bathroom decor.
There are a few types of deodorizer you can purchase: a regular deodorizer, an aromatic deodorizer, or a deodorizing absorbent.
These deodorizers suppress the bacteria that cause odors in the first place. Unscented deodorizers are usually of this type. We recommend this type for those of you who don't like the fragrant smell that usually accompanies deodorizers.
These deodorizers come in two types: ones that also suppress the bacteria that cause odors, and ones that only release fragrant chemicals to mask them. In other words, the latter doesn't get rid of bacteria or odor at all but just covers smells.
We recommend this kind of deodorizer for those of you who would like to replace the odors found in their bathroom with a scent of their liking.
Note that these are different from ordinary air fresheners, which only have strong scents.
These deodorizers use activated carbon or clay to absorb the bacteria molecules that cause odor. We find that these work the best in smaller spaces.
All air fresheners do is mask unwanted odors with a strong scent of their own.
These don't get to the root of the cause like other deodorizers do. Placing one of these in an enclosed space like a bathroom would inundate it with its scent, making it almost unbearable. We don't recommend purchasing one of these.
Most products will have how long they last written right on the label.
This will of course affect cost per day so choose one that suits both your spending needs as well as how long you'd like to continue using the product itself.

This toilet deodorizer uses nano-powder to get your bathroom clean and smelling fresh.
Also, the alkalinity in the citric acid will counteract any smell of ammonia in your bathroom. By just placing this product somewhere in your bathroom, you won't have to worry about bad smells at all!
Compared to other deodorizers, this particular one has a scent of soap that isn't too strong on the senses. You'll be able to enjoy a relaxing scent while deodorizing your bathroom with our number one ranked toilet deodorizer!
Here we have the best choice for an unscented toilet deodorizer! Instead of filling your bathroom with another strong scent, it completely gets rid of bad odors.
The tiny holes in the body and nano-powder help to absorb nasty odors. We recommend this product for those of you wishing to rid your bathroom of bad odors without just covering them up.
This particular product's deodorizing ability was surprisingly effective compared to citrus deodorizers. We didn't find the charcoal scent unpleasant when mixed with other odors either.
To be honest, some thought it smelled more like incense than it did charcoal. Others thought it smelled like hairspray, so our testers were divided.
This toilet deodorizer does a great job of suppressing unwanted odors. However, that deodorizing power isn't reflected in its large size.
It's supposed to be unscented, but the beads themselves have their own scent to them. Also, we wouldn't recommend this product unless you have space to spare in your bathroom for such a large container.
This granular type toilet deodorizer comes in a pouch with a sticky tab allowing you to stick it to a place of your choosing. It does a great job of getting rid of strong odors.
Despite its deodorizing ability, it might not look so cool or fashionable at first sight. A container for it is available but it's rather expensive and requires electricity, so we wouldn't recommend going through the trouble of purchasing it.
We didn't find this deodorizer to be fast-acting and the beads themselves had a certain scent to them. There have been reports of it being effective against strong odors as well as reports stating the opposite, so it seems to depend on the kind of odors you're trying to get rid of.
It comes in a rather large size, so it's not recommended for those of you with smaller bathrooms.
This toilet deodorizer comes with activated carbon and an artificial enzyme filter that absorbs and eliminates unwanted odors. Although it's odorless, it also gets rid of that strong ammonia smell common to bathrooms.
At such a small size and low price, you can imagine how surprised we were to find out you can use it for up to two years! Some of you might even enjoy the design.
Here we have the very rare card-type toilet deodorizer. Since you hang it instead of placing it somewhere, it won't take up space in your bathroom.
It rated averagely in both categories but the strong deodorizer might smell good to some. If you'd like to purchase this product, you could also cut the sheets into smaller sizes to reduce the strength of the scent.
Here we have a liquid-type deodorizer with a strong citrus scent that masks unwanted odors instead of getting rid of them.
Unlike the liquid types we see today, the bottle part is pushed up, letting you use it until the very last drop. However, it might be because of such a design, but it runs out rather fast, only really giving you a month's worth of effective deodorizing power.
The intense lemon scent will mask any odor that comes its way but since it doesn't actually get rid of any smells, it sometimes mixes with the bad smell making it quite unpleasant.
Although we found the smell a little overwhelming, it's better compared to other deodorizers with their distinct smell of alcohol. And since it comes in an array of scents, those of you who don't like the scent of lemon can choose one that's right for you.
We purchased the top best-selling Japanese toilet deodorizers from Japanese websites like Amazon and Rakuten and put them to the test!
We tested each product for the following two criteria.
① Deodorizing ability
② Pleasantness of scent
First, we tested each deodorizer for its ability to get rid of odors.
We placed a sheet of paper soaked in ammonia in a plastic bag, sealed it, then put each deodorizer in it. We then waited a few minutes and had our expert smell inside the bag to see just how good their deodorizing power was. We rated each with a score of A+ to D.
The effect of the gel and bead-type deodorizers (the ones that absorb the odor first to deodorize it) was difficult to measure since they usually aren't fast acting and each test was done in only a few minutes' time.
On the other hand, liquid-type deodorizers were exceptionally fast-acting. For those of you not into fragrant deodorizers, go with an unscented one.
"Gel and bead-type deodorizers absorb odors and freshen the room over time, so we couldn't count on them to eliminate odors in such a short period of time. Also, eliminating these odors is not only a question of time but also space. The smaller your bathroom is, the easier it will be for the deodorizer to eliminate odors.
Odor molecules are heavier than normal air molecules so unscented deodorizers should be kept somewhere on the bathroom floor whereas scented ones should be kept on a window sill or other elevated location."
Next, we tested each deodorizer for how good or bad they smelled after being mixed in with bathroom odors.
After recreating odors found in the bathroom and mixing them with our deodorizers, we tested each mixture to see just how awful each smell became and gave them a rating of A+ to D.
You can instantly feel the effects of a strong-smelling deodorizer, but the fragrance itself mixed in with the scent of ammonia is less than desirable. Even unscented deodorizers can have a strong smell of alcohol or other active ingredients. We recommend getting yourself one with just a hint of fragrance.
S.T.'s Citric Acid Plus, coming in first in our examination, is the perfect example of a mild-smelling deodorizer, giving us absolutely no sense of unpleasantness at all.
"There are a lot of overbearing deodorizers out there, made in hopes that they'll be able to mask the unwanted smells in your bathroom, thereby proving themselves a good product. Even some unscented ones have a certain chemical smell to them.
The level of unpleasantness will differ depending on the scent of the deodorizer. Soap-like scents prove to be much more unpleasant than citrus.
Yet, of course, whether a scent is pleasant or not solely depends on the person smelling it. Just make sure you purchase one that suits your liking."
Deodorizers are a great item to have in any bathroom to keep it smelling fresh and clean. But why stop at having it smell good? Let's make it clean and comfortable, too! Check out the articles below to help you make your purchases.
