The Down-Low on Non-Comedogenic Sunscreen

Non-comedogenic sunscreens are known to not clog the pores, but they can also be too drying for certain skin types. That's why it's important to understand how a non-comedogenic sunscreen works and which skin types they work best on.

What is a Non-Comedogenic Sunscreen?

What is a Non-Comedogenic Sunscreen?

You might have heard about non-comedogenic products multiple times, but what are they, exactly? "Non-comedogenic" is a scientific term used to describe skincare or cosmetic products that are formulated so that they won't clog pores.

Regular sunscreen is heavily oil-based and can easily clog your pores, leading to unwanted breakouts. Meanwhile, non-comedogenic sunscreens do not contain ingredients that clog pores, such as cocoa butter, coconut, or soybean oil.

Who Should Use a Non-Comedogenic Sunscreen?

Who Should Use a Non-Comedogenic Sunscreen?

Not all skin types need to stay away from comedogenic sunscreens. In fact, for extremely dry skin, rich and heavy comedogenic creams with effective moisturizing effects might actually be better. Meanwhile, non-comedogenic sunscreens will be of great help for those with oily or acne-prone skin.

How to Choose a Non-Comedogenic Sunscreen - Buying Guide

Non-comedogenic sunscreens can protect your skin from the sun while avoiding unwanted breakouts. However, did you know that there are two types of non-comedogenic sunscreens? Each one is created to be suitable for certain types of skin. Factors such as the waterproof property, protection spectrum, and SPF also matter a lot!

1

Avoid Heavy Oils That Can Clog Pores

Avoid Heavy Oils That Can Clog Pores

Firstly, you'll want to look for the label "non-comedogenic" or "oil-free" in the product description. However, you should also check the ingredient list to see if the product contains anything that might block your pores. A good rule of thumb is to avoid heavy oils and butter such as coconut oil, cocoa butter, or avocado oil.

Mineral oils and silicone are two ingredients frequently found in regular sunscreens that you should pay attention to, as well. They have been known to trap your sweat under your skin surface, block your pores, and in some cases, might even lead to skin irritation or inflammation.

Keep in mind that many pore-clogging ingredients are natural and actually beneficial for your body. They might just be too rich for your skin type to handle, thus causing breakouts or acne.

If you have acne or oily skin, avoid any oily or greasy products. Avoid using a spray sunscreen on the face as these are usually greasy and can clog pores. Mineral blocker sunscreens, like those with zinc and titanium, provide effective sun protection and are great for those with acne and sensitive skin. Sometimes, chemical blocker sunscreens can trigger acne or rosacea flares.

2

Choose an Application Type

Choose an Application Type

Sunscreens often come in different consistencies such as creams and lotions, gels, and stick or spray types. Those with dry skin often prefer creams for the extra boost in moisture. Meanwhile, lotions work best when applied to larger areas due to their easy-to-apply consistency.

If you're planning to apply sunscreen on the scalp, chest or other more hairy areas, gels are recommended for their aqueous and non-greasy formulation. These can also keep up with an active lifestyle because they stick even with sweat.

Go for stick-types on more sensitive areas such as the eyes and spray sunscreens for quick application with wide coverage. When dealing with sprays, however, be sure to apply generously to make sure you're applying enough. Regardless of the consistency, keep it lightweight by avoiding the ingredients we've mentioned that could lead to pore-clogging.

Gel sunscreens are a great option if you have oily skin or acne. They absorb well into the skin and can actually soak up oil. They are great for morning use since makeup applies easily over a gel without changing the color of the makeup or leaving a residue.

3

Opt for Broad-Spectrum Protection for the Optimal Shield

Opt for Broad-Spectrum Protection for the Optimal Shield

There are two types of ultraviolet rays that can damage our skin: UVA and UVB. While UVB rays are responsible for all of our sunburns (and might even lead to skin cancer, according to the American Cancer Society), UVA rays can lead to tanning and wrinkles, as well as accelerate the aging of our skin.

Many sunscreen products only protect our skin against UVB rays, so for maximum protection, you should go for a product labeled "broad-spectrum" to help you fight off both types of rays.

Dr. Lauren Levy
Board Certified Dermatologist
Dr. Lauren Levy

Broad-spectrum sunscreens are the way to go for the best protection. UVA rays cause wrinkles and aging and can go through glass windows. UVB rays cause skin cancer. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen gives the best protection against both of these UV rays and can provide the best protection for the skin.

4

Pay Attention to the SPF and Waterproof Property

Pay Attention to the SPF and Waterproof Property

One of the most important things when choosing a sunscreen is to consider the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) number. The higher the SPF number is, the more protection from UVB rays it gives you. For example, SPF 30 allows approximately three percent of UVB rays to get in contact with your skin, while SPF 50 reduces that number to two percent.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is recommended for everyday use. Some people may apply it once and think it protects them for the whole day - unfortunately, that's not true!

For extended outdoor activity, you should apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside and then re-apply it every two hours or so. You might also want to consider a waterproof sunscreen to prevent the solution from being washed away.

5

Decide Between a Mineral-Based or a Chemical Formula

There are two main types of non-comedogenic sunscreens: mineral and chemical-based. Each type has its own pros and cons that you should take into consideration in order to find a suitable product!

Chemical Sunscreens are Easy to Spread and Great for Daily Use

Chemical Sunscreens are Easy to Spread and Great for Daily Use

Many sunscreens rely on chemical blockers such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, or octocrylene to absorb the UV rays. They are easy to rub onto the skin without leaving behind a greasy, white residue, thus great for daily use.

However, chemical blockers tend to be effective against UVB rays only. UVA rays can still get through and do damage to the deeper layers of your skin unless it's a broad-spectrum formula.

While many sunscreens are made with chemicals, not all of them are bad. For example, many products use avobenzone, a chemical that breaks down quickly in the sun and is generally safe for your health. It's also safe for coral reefs and fish, unlike popular alternatives like oxybenzone and octinoxate.

Still, chemical sunscreens may cause some allergic reactions such as redness, itchiness, or swelling. Those with sensitive skin may want to choose products meant for kids since they are often made with a gentle formula.

If you have dry skin, eczema, or an active skin rash, chemical sunscreens can burn or irritate your skin upon application. They are easy to rub in, however, making them very popular for everyday use under makeup.

Mineral Sunscreens are Ideal for Sensitive Skin

Mineral Sunscreens are Ideal for Sensitive Skin

Mineral sunscreens (or physical sunscreens) use physical blockers such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to create a protective layer on your skin that reflects the UV rays.

They protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, mineral sunscreens are also safer for those with delicate or sensitive skin, particularly babies.

However, those ingredients are still chemically processed, even though mineral sunscreens use natural ingredients. Furthermore, some sunscreens might leave an annoying white film on the skin.

Nonetheless, many people still love mineral sunscreens since they protect your skin immediately after application. This is unlike chemical sunscreens, which might need 20 to 30 minutes to be absorbed into the skin and start working.

Dr. Lauren Levy
Board Certified Dermatologist
Dr. Lauren Levy

Mineral sunscreens are best for long days in the sun, like a day at the beach or pool. They also are unlikely to cause a burning sensation on the skin if you have sensitive skin. The major issue with these sunscreens is that they are hard to rub in well and can sometimes leave a white residue.

Still, these sunscreens are great if you have any residual hyperpigmentation after an acne outbreak since they effectively filter out UV rays that could make these marks darker.
