Is a Vegetable Chopper Worth It?

They Dice Foods Fast When You're Short on Time

They Dice Foods Fast When You're Short on Time

Using a vegetable chopper decreases food preparation time by a lot. We diced a whole onion using a knife and using a food chopper. It took three and a half minutes with a knife. However, it only took a minute with a vegetable chopper. So, using a chopper cut prep time by one-third.

It Keeps Your Cleanup Time to a Minimum

It Keeps Your Cleanup Time to a Minimum

Do you tend to make a mess when chopping food by hand? With a vegetable chopper, all the food is stored in its tray or bowl. You won't have to wipe a mess off your counter or sweep food pieces from your floor.

You Don't Need Great Knife Skills to Get Evenly-Diced Pieces

You Don't Need Great Knife Skills to Get Evenly-Diced Pieces

Even novice chefs can quickly dice vegetables into uniform pieces using a chopper. Dicing with a knife often yields irregular pieces unless you're very skilled. There are even adjustable choppers. You can cut food into different sizes and shapes to suit various dishes.

Choose an Electric Chopper for Doing Large Amounts

Choose an Electric Chopper for Doing Large Amounts

Although choppers are faster than manual cutting, you'll wear yourself out turning the handle when making a large batch of food! An electric vegetable chopper lets you dice vegetables by simply pressing a button. Although an electric chopper may cost more than a manual one, it might meet your needs better.

In this article, however, we only looked at manual vegetable choppers.

How to Choose a Vegetable Choppers - Buying Guide

A vegetable chopper is excellent for dicing vegetables like onions or tomatoes fast. It can reduce meal prep time and takes less effort than a knife. But with so many brands available online, like OXO, Fullstar, and Mueller, how do you know which ones will be worth having in the kitchen?

Look at our rankings and check out our buying guide, so you can learn what to choose! We rounded up 17 of the bestselling vegetable choppers from Amazon, Walmart, and Bed Bath & Beyond and tested them.

1

The Rotating-blade Type Is Easiest to Use

The Rotating-blade Type Is Easiest to Use

There are three main types to pick from. One rotates the blades, one has a hinged lid that pushes the food through a grate, and the last presses the blades down on the food. Among these three, mybest highly recommends rotating-blade choppers.

They Work Fast and With Little Effort

They Work Fast and With Little Effort

A rotating-blade chopper is genuinely easy to operate. It requires effort to use the other types since you have to push something down for each chop. However, with the rotating-blade kind, every pull of the cord or turn of the handle spins the blades. You can easily and quickly dice a large number of vegetables at once.

Also, compared to the push or press types, this kind of chopper makes less noise when you use it.

They Can Cut Smaller Pieces

They Can Cut Smaller Pieces

The rotating-blade type can dice vegetables more finely than the other two types. We tested all three with red onions, carrots, and tomatoes. Only the rotating blades performed well when dicing both soft and hard foods.

The hinge type can also chop vegetables uniformly. However, some kinds of vegetables will need to be cut thinly beforehand. On the other hand, as long as you cut them into one-inch chunks beforehand, you can perfectly dice anything with rotating blades.

Adjust the Coarseness Easily

Adjust the Coarseness Easily

Another plus is that you only have to turn the handle or pull the string more times to get a finer dice. You can use it for a broader range of dishes.

The press-button type is similar in that you can push it multiple times to make finer pieces. However, most choppers tested weren't sharp enough to get a fine dice.

The Rotating-Blade Types Come Apart for Easy Cleaning

The Rotating-Blade Types Come Apart for Easy Cleaning

A rotating-blade chopper usually has only a container, lid, and blade. This simple design makes it a lot easier to clean and maintain. Food can be quickly rinsed off.

The hinge and press types have complex blades, making them difficult to clean. Even after we put them in a dishwasher, not all the food bits were washed entirely off their blades.

2

Among the Rotating-blade Ones, We Recommend a Pull-Cord Model

Of the three ways the blade can be spun, we found the kind of chopper with a pull-cord easiest to use.

Pull-Cord Choppers Can Dice Even Hard Carrots

Pull-Cord Choppers Can Dice Even Hard Carrots

The most significant difference we observed among the rotating-blade choppers was how well they chopped the ingredients. One-inch carrots chopped by the pull-cord type were the finest and most uniform.

With a crank handle or push-button type, one-inch carrots got stuck on the blades, making it hard to turn. So we recommend you pre-cut vegetables thinly beforehand if you are using these kinds.

3

Go With the Hinge Type for Onions

Even though this kind is hard to clean, it's a great help when dicing onions fast.

You Can Dice Half an Onion at Once

You Can Dice Half an Onion at Once

The hinge type can significantly reduce food prep time when dicing an onion. You will only need to cut it in half beforehand, not into one-inch cubes as you do with the other types of choppers. However, because it only cuts in one direction, all vegetables except onions must be thinly sliced beforehand.

When cutting, it's important to press down firmly from above. There are products outside of the ones we tested where you need to use your body weight to get a proper cut. If you're not comfortable exerting that much force when chopping, this option may not be the best choice.

Mueller and Fullstar Models Are Easy to Use, Well-Made, and Sharp

Mueller and Fullstar Models Are Easy to Use, Well-Made, and Sharp

Usability varied among the hinge types, but the products from Mueller and Fullstar performed well. Their outer housing is thick and durable, and the sharp blade can dice half an onion smoothly.

On the other hand, some of the products required repeated pushes to chop the food all the way through. The blades were too dull, and our testers' hands got tired.

Choose a Chopping Area Wider Than 3 Inches

Choose a Chopping Area Wider Than 3 Inches

Check the width of the chopping grate when buying a hinge type. It determines how much you can dice at once. A model with a grate wider than three inches will fit half an average-sized onion.

4

Choose a Press Type If You Only Do Smaller Amounts

This type works by slamming a large button down, but the blades don't rotate. The containers with this type are relatively small, which limits the amount you can dice at once. They're recommended for those who only need to make a small amount at a time.

Geedel and Others With a Removable Blade Cover Are Easy to Wash

Geedel and Others With a Removable Blade Cover Are Easy to Wash

We highly advise you to check whether the product is easy to wash. The blades can be tough to clean with this type, but some, like Geedel, have a cover that comes off, making it more manageable.

When the blade cover isn't removable, it is hard to rinse away food from between the blades or drain off the water, making it unsanitary.

For more information on the ease of maintenance of each, check out our product rankings.

mybest's Top Choice: Easy Mincing, Excellent Results

Chef'n's Hand-Powered Food Chopper is a pull-cord type product where the blades rotate when the handle is pulled. It comes with a lid for storage, allowing you to store the minced ingredients in the chopper itself.

Due to its pull-cord type design, this product made mincing easy. The handle is also large, providing a comfortable grip, and can be rotated with minimal effort.

Testers rated it highly for its ability to finely chop a variety of ingredients. Whether it's onions or tomatoes, it chopped with finesse. We noticed a slight size difference in carrots, but it's not significant enough to be a concern. It gives a clean finish regardless of the size or hardness of the ingredients.

Maintenance is easy as you can disassemble the chopper for cleaning and even put it in the dishwasher. We chose this model as our number one since it cuts down prep time without sacrificing quality and is a breeze to cleanup.

Minces Precisely and Maintenance Is Easy

Zyliss' Easy Pull Chopper claims to achieve uniform mincing with just a pull of the handle. It comes with a transparent body that makes it easy to check its contents.

This product comes with a large, easy-to-grip handle, making it easy to pull the cord and mince ingredients effortlessly. However, one of its major drawbacks was that the body and lid couldn't be securely locked, meaning it is necessary to firmly hold the lid while pulling the cord.

Testers were highly satisfied with the mincing results. Onions and carrots were finely and uniformly minced, and tomatoes were chopped thoroughly, including the skin. Thanks to the sharpness of the blades, this chopper is suitable for a variety of ingredients.

With only three parts and a simple structure, it was easy to clean with just a light rinse of water. It is also dishwasher-friendly. While there are some slightly inconvenient aspects, this product is perfect for saving time during food preparation.

Easy Mincing and Maintenance

Mueller's 2 Speed Pull Chopper is capable of mincing fruits, vegetables, boiled eggs, nuts, and more. It comes with a switch that allows you to change the chopping speed. When set to low speed, it provides coarse chopping, while high speed results in fine chopping.

It is overall easy to use with a large handle that makes pulling the cord effortless. Additionally, the large capacity allows for mincing one whole onion at once, greatly reducing cooking time.

The finished mincing result was impressive for carrots and tomatoes, both being thoroughly minced in just 10 pulls. However, it can be said that the mincing result varies depending on the ingredient, as with onions, it resulted in a mixture of large pieces and flat chunks.

It is dishwasher-friendly and only has three parts that need to be washed, making maintenance a breeze. While the outcome for onions was a bit lacking, it can be considered a product that combines ease of chopping and ease of maintenance.

Little Force Required, but Not the Best for Soft Ingredients

KUHN RIKON's Pull Chop Chopper is a pull-cord type product where the blades rotate when the handle is pulled. It has a capacity of about 2 cups.

Even when mincing hard carrots, it required very little force, and the handle's indentation lends to an easy grip.

In terms of the finished mincing result, carrots and onions were both finely minced without leaving large chunks. On the other hand, with tomatoes, some large pieces of skin remained, giving the impression that precision decreases when cutting through soft ingredients.

It is easy to clean with only the main body, lid, and blades to wash, with the main body and blades being dishwasher-safe.

Suitable for Onions, Less So for Carrots and Tomatoes

Brieftons' Express Manual Food Chopper is a product that claims to easily mince ingredients with a few presses of a button. It has a capacity of 6.8 cups, making it suitable for family use.

Although there was some size variation, onions were overall finely chopped. However, when mincing one onion, it's important to note that the blades may not rotate smoothly unless the onion is split into at least halves first.

Due to the need for some force when chopping carrots, there were occasional bite-sized chunks left. Additionally, the tomatoes couldn't be chopped down to the skin, leaving large chunks in the result.

In terms of maintenance, it received high praise for having only three parts to clean: the container, lid, and blades, which are dishwasher-friendly. Its simple structure also makes it easy to assemble, adding to its ease of maintenance.

Finely Chops Onions and Carrots, Tomatoes Not So Much

OXO's Good Grips One Stop Chop Manual Food Processor works by using a rotating handle that spins the blades. The base of the main body is equipped with a suction cup, allowing it to be secured to the countertop.

In terms of ease of mincing, it may initially require some force and be difficult to turn the handle, but once the ingredients are finely chopped, it spins smoothly. It should also be noted that the chopper cannot chop a whole onion at once, so be sure to divide it into two portions first.

Both onions and carrots were finely chopped. However, for tomatoes, many large chunks were left behind, giving the impression that the blades have difficulty cutting through soft ingredients.

It was rated highly for its ease of maintenance, with having only three parts to clean and being dishwasher-friendly.

Requires Time for a Fine Mince

Geedel's Food Chopper is characterized by its use of 430 stainless steel blades to mince ingredients with a simple push of a button.

Testers gave it positive feedback from having a groove on the side of the main body, making it easy to support. However, the container has a small capacity, limiting the amount of onions that can be minced at once to about 2-3 1-inch square pieces. To mince one whole onion, you would need to divide it into 5-6 portions, so it is not suitable for mincing a large amount of ingredients at once.

The finished mincing results for all ingredients was good, regardless of its hardness—although there was a slight size variation. However, to achieve a finer chop, it is necessary to chop multiple times, making it come off as a time-consuming product.

There are four parts to clean, and all of them can be washed in the dishwasher, but due to the unique shape of the blades, it is recommended that they be handwashed. Since the surrounding cover comes off, there is less likelihood of ingredients getting stuck in the gaps between the blades compared to other push-type models.

Excellent For Carrots, Leaves Chunky Onions and Tomatoes

The Zick-Zick Classic Food Chopper is a product from the Swiss kitchen tool manufacturer Zyliss. As it comes with a lid, the chopper also acts as a storage container, allowing you to refrigerate the minced ingredients in the main body.

The container is small, and you can only mince about 2-3 1-inch square fragments of onions at once, so it's not suitable for mincing a large quantity in one go.

The finished mincing result also received a low rating. While carrots were uniformly chopped, onions and tomatoes had large chunks remaining. In particular, there were pieces of onions about 0.8 inches in size left, giving the impression that the blades lacked sharpness for cutting through soft ingredients.

Although there are five parts to clean, they are dishwasher-safe and can easily be washed. However, due to the complex shape of the blades, food particles stuck in the gaps between the blades may be challenging to remove without handwashing.

Finely Minces Carrots, but Not Onions and Tomatoes

The Good Grips Chopper is a product from OXO, a company that focuses on the concept of Universal Design and developing products that make everyday life easier. Its major appeal is that it can be locked in a compact state by pressing a button.

When it comes to mincing, it was necessary to press the button forcefully to chop, which would be tiring when done repeatedly. Additionally, since the amount of minced ingredients that can be made at once is about half of the container capacity, mincing a large quantity of ingredients would require some time.

Carrots achieved a uniformly fine mince, making it suitable for mincing hard ingredients. However, onions stuck to the bottom of the container were not finely minced, resulting in uneven sizes. Tomatoes also seemed to be crushed, resulting in a watery texture.

There are five parts to clean, which is more than most other choppers, but since it is dishwasher-friendly, it will be less of a hassle if you have a dishwasher. However, the blades tend to trap small bits of ingredients in the gaps, so thorough handwashing is necessary.

The CTG-00-SCHP Chopper is a product from Cuisinart and is designed to chop ingredients with just a push of a button.

The bottom of the container easily comes off, which makes it easy to insert and remove ingredients. Additionally, carrots were chopped uniformly, but the overall mincing was coarse.

However, when mincing onions and tomatoes, the two kept sticking to the sides of the container, resulting in various sizes. Since it couldn't thoroughly mince through the entire vegetable, several large chunks remained. To dislodge stuck pieces, it was necessary to shake the main body multiple times during the process.

There are four parts to clean, and all of them are dishwasher-safe. However, since dirt tends to accumulate in the gaps between the blades, be sure to handwash the blades.

Does Great With Mincing, but Cleaning is a Hassle

Mueller Austria's Heavy Duty Vegetable Slicer comes with four blades of different sizes that allows you to mince ingredients simply by pushing the lid down.

It has a handle on the lid, making it easy to open and close. However, as the blade area is somewhat small, it is necessary to cut the ingredients to match the width of the blade. Additionally, some force is required to press down from above.

Carrots and tomatoes were cut into uniform, neat cubes. Although there were some onions with elongated shapes, they were not noticeable, overall earning high marks for its finish. The blade also has protrusions on the side, which makes it difficult for the vegetables to move around when sandwiched between the lid.

There are only three parts, and all of them are compatible with dishwashers. However, since food scraps and peels tend to remain on the back of the lid and the blade, the back of the cover should be washed by hand.

Uniform Sizes, but Ingredients Tend to Get Stuck

The Pro-Series 10-in-1 by Mueller Austria comes with a total of 8 blades that can slice and julienne your vegetables.

It was rated highly by our testers for its great minced results. All ingredients were diced uniformly, and tomatoes were not watery, highlighting its sharp blades.

A prominent feature is the grooves around the blade that make it difficult for the ingredients to move when sandwiched. From our testing, about half an onion can be chopped at once. However, you would need to put your weight on top to push down the lid.

In terms of maintenance, there are only three parts to wash: the container, lid, and blade. However, since food scraps tend to remain on the back of the lid and the blade. It is recommended to remove the food scraps with the included cleaning brush before washing. All parts can be washed using a dishwasher.

Chops Uniformly, but Requires Some Force

LHS' Vegetable Chopper is a product that finely chops ingredients by pushing them down onto a grid of blades. It comes with 5 types of blades, a safety cover, and a cleaning pick.

In our tests, all ingredients were chopped uniformly, especially carrots, resulting in a clean, dice-like finish.

However, considerable force was required to push down the ingredients. Even for small cuts, the chopper did not chop smoothly, and it was necessary to push down using one's body weight. There were also concerns about the blades coming off easily and the container being prone to warping.

In terms of maintenance, testers liked that it only had three parts to wash (container, lid, and blades) and was compatible with a dishwasher. However, it is recommended to use the included cleaning pick to remove onion or tomato peels that may easily remain in the indentations on the lid or the blades before washing.

Raved Results, but Requires Considerable Strength

VIDALIA CHOP WIZARD's The Original Vidalia Chop Wizard can finely chop vegetables by sandwiching them between a lid and grid of blades. It comes with two types of blades of different sizes and a cleaning pick.

Carrots and tomatoes could be finely and uniformly diced. Onions, while having slightly elongated pieces mixed in, were also all finely chopped.

However, its major drawback is that it cannot finely chop without pressing down strongly from above. So you may want to consider other options if you don't want to constantly exert force while chopping.

There are only three parts to wash and they are all dishwasher-friendly. However, because food tends to remain in the indentations on the lid or the blades, it is recommended to use the included cleaning pick to remove food scraps before washing.

Chopped Poorly and Hard to Clean

Vivaant's Food Chopper is a mincer with a capacity of about 1 cup. It comes with rubber bottom cover that keeps it slip-free.

Since the blades do not reach the bottom of the container, thinly sliced ingredients were not chopped no matter how many times the blades were pressed down, leaving large chunks for all ingredients. Especially, tomatoes were hardly chopped, resulting in a watery consistency. Additionally, carrots and onions are prone to getting stuck in the gaps of the blades.

The cover around the blades can be removed, allowing for thorough cleaning of all six parts. Although it is dishwasher-friendly, removing food pieces stuck in the gaps of the blades is cumbersome and makes maintenance a hassle.

Requires Strength and Difficult to Maintain

Alrens' Vegetable Chopper is a multi-functional chopper with 7 blades for slicing, grating, and more. It is available in three colors: blue, gray, and white.

Carrots were beautifully diced, while onions had some elongated shapes, but generally were finely chopped. Tomatoes had a bit of watery texture when cut.

However, quite a bit of force is required to push down the lid from above. Additionally, with half an onion, it couldn't be minced in one go and had to be cut into 1-2 inch pieces before chopping.

Only three parts need to be washed (container, lid, and blades), and assembly is easy. However, it is not dishwasher-friendly, and because food tends to get caught in the indentations on the lid and the blades, it received a lower rating for ease of maintenance.

Large Chunks Remained for Onions

Fullstar's 9-in-1 Deluxe Vegetable Chopper is a multi-functional kitchen tool with a total of 7 attachments, including two chopper blades of different sizes and two spiralizer blades. It is made out of BPA-free plastic.

The blade width is approximately 3.3 inches, perfect for halved onions of small to medium sizes. However, especially for hard carrots, it was necessary to press down strongly from above to get the ingredients to chop.

While some strength is required, carrots were cleanly diced, and tomatoes did not become watery and were also finely chopped. On the other hand, onions had some large chunks left uncut, leading to lower ratings.

With only three parts to clean, maintenance is easy, but the drawback is that food tends to remain in the indentations on the lid and the grid-like pattern on the blade. It is dishwasher-friendly, but it is recommended to remove tangled food with the included pick before washing.
