When investing in a slicer, it's crucial to choose one that delivers clean and precise cuts. To evaluate this, we tested the quality of the finished product when slicing onions, potatoes, cheese, and tomatoes. We examined if the slices were uniformly thin and if the shape and cross-sections were clean, and rated the products accordingly. Those that produced even, thin slices with clean cross-sections received high ratings.
Safety is a significant concern when using a slicer, as there's a risk of injuring your fingers. So we assessed the slicer's safety while in use. We checked the slip resistance of the slicer and its ability to securely hold the food item. Products with a safety guard that securely held the food or push type slicers that didn't require your hands to be near the blades received high ratings.
Having the ability to adjust the thickness of the slices adds convenience. We checked whether the slicers had a thickness adjustment feature, and gave higher ratings to products with a wider range of adjustable thickness settings or that can be freely adjusted.
A slicer becomes even more convenient when it offers a variety of cuts beyond just slicing. We assessed the slicers' versatility by checking the different types of cuts they could perform, and rated those with a greater variety of cuts higher.
It's essential to have a slicer that's easy to clean after use. We evaluated the ease of maintenance by actually cleaning all the products. We gave higher ratings to those with fewer parts to clean and those with fewer nooks and crannies, making them easier to wash.
Ease of storage after use is also an important factor to consider when purchasing a slicer. We evaluated how easy each product is to store by measuring the volume of all the slicers, with those featuring smaller volumes receiving higher ratings.

If you use a slicer, you'll save yourself time when cutting ingredients and be able to produce consistently even slices with no knife skills. This not only reduces daily cooking time but also improves the appearance and overall quality of your dishes. Let's take a closer look at the benefits of purchasing a slicer.
The primary benefit of using a slicer is that it allows for quicker cutting compared to using a knife. In fact, when comparing the time it took to slice three potatoes, it took three minutes using a knife but only 10 seconds with a slicer. Some slicers can also handle time-consuming tasks like dicing, significantly reducing your daily cooking time if used effectively.
A slicer ensures consistent quality in your slices, no matter who uses it. Its simple and easy-to-use design allows even those who have limited knife skills to slice ingredients evenly. Slicers can also achieve even cuts for tasks that are difficult to accomplish with a knife, such as dicing, making it possible for cooking beginners to produce quality dishes.
Compared to slicers of the past, current slicers have evolved in terms of blade types and safety. In the past, slicers were only capable of slicing, but newer slicers can perform various types of cuts. In addition to being able to adjust the size of the slices, you can use them to cut julienne strips and dice. Some slicers can handle up to five different types of cuts.
Additionally, the usability of safety guards for securing food has improved, including push-type slicers that keep your hands far away from the blades. You’ll enjoy cooking with these more convenient and safer slicers.
Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Mandoline Slicers.
Slicers come in two main types: the hand-held standard type, and the push type, which has a stand. Based on our tests, the standard type was easier to use. Let's examine why the standard type was more user-friendly and consider the best product for your needs.
The push type has an opening where you put food in to slice it, and this requires you to cut some ingredients to fit. In our tests, even half an onion was too big to insert and had to be cut into quarters to fit. The standard type has a wider blade, eliminating the need to cut most foods into smaller pieces beforehand.
Additionally, the push type requires pressing food against the blade, which can easily crush soft, ripe things like tomatoes, so extra care is needed.
The standard type is recommended for those who value easy cleanup. The push type has a complex blade structure that cannot be disassembled, making it difficult to remove small bits of food.
The standard type has fewer grooves and is less likely to trap ingredients, making it easier to clean. If you plan to use a dishwasher, make sure to check if the slicer is dishwasher safe.
The standard type takes up very little space when stored. While the push type can be folded, it still occupies more space and can be cumbersome to store. If you have limited room for storage, the space-saving standard type is recommended.
Of all the standard type slicers we tested, the Gramercy slicer was the easiest to use. Its sharpness and inclined design allowed for more uniform slicing compared to other standard types. The safety guard securely grips foods, allowing for worry-free slicing. The slicer also features nine levels of thickness adjustment and three cutting options. We'll explain more about these features below.
With standard type slicers, an incline will require less force while slicing and produced a better finish compared to slicers that lie flat. In our tests of standard type slicers, only the Gramercy slicer featured this incline.
How well the safety guard grips your ingredients is crucial for safe slicing, but some safety guards don't hold onto foods as well as others. The Gramercy safety guard features sharp blades that firmly grasp your ingredients. Also, standard type slicers with a non-slip design on the body and handle minimize slipping effectively, making them safer to use.
The thickness adjustment feature lets you customize the width of slices. Our tests revealed that it was difficult to adjust the thickness on the freely adjustable types. While the freedom to cut at any thickness is convenient, the absence of precise levels means you must visually check the thickness, which can be difficult if you're inexperienced.
Slicers with pre-selected thickness settings offer less freedom but allow adjustments using the gauge, letting anyone slice at their desired thickness. For those who are not accustomed to using slicers, we recommend choosing a slicer with fixed thickness settings. The Gramercy slicer comes with a thickness gauge, making adjustments easy.
When purchasing a slicer, it's nice to have one that offers flexibility in cutting styles and slice thickness. A multifunctional slicer will broaden your recipe possibilities.
One appealing aspect of a slicer is its ability to customize slice thickness based on your recipe's requirements. However, the versatility of the thickness adjustment feature varies product to product. A slicer without preset levels lets you adjust freely between 0.5 and eight millimeters. Others have presets of one-millimeter increments. Of the slicers we tested, the Gramercy featured the most thickness settings, at nine.
Choosing a product that supports more than just slicing allows for various cuts, such as dicing and julienne cuts. In some cases, up to five different cuts are possible. All cuts can be achieved faster than using a knife, allowing you to prepare diverse dishes in less time.
If safety is your top priority, consider a push-type slicer. With a push-type slicer, you can slice ingredients without directly touching them, ensuring safer use since your fingers are kept far from the blade. This option is recommended for those who are new to cooking or who want to ensure the safety of children helping out in the kitchen.

The Gramercy stainless steel mandoline is a standard type slicer with nine thickness levels and a durable stainless steel blade for lasting sharpness. In our testing, we found it could slice foods easily and cleanly. The body is angled, and the blade is sharper compared to other slicers, allowing for smooth slicing with minimal effort. The sharpness of the blade results in an excellent cut, earning high praise from our testers.
Its wide stand design ensures the slicer stays securely in place during use, and the safety guard guarantees the blade grips the food securely, enabling safe slicing from start to finish. With a total of nine thickness levels, the most among the products we tested, this slicer can cater to a wide variety of recipes, as you can adjust the thickness according to your preference.
However, its 15-inch width means you'll need quite a bit of storage space, which might be a drawback. This slicer can safely and smoothly create even slices, making it perfect for elevating the quality of your everyday cooking.

The OXO Good Grips Large Adjustable Slicer is a standard type slicer with seven thickness level settings and is dishwasher safe. The slicer's most notable feature is its ease of storage. With a body height of one and a half inches, it can fit in shallow drawers, which is a welcome feature for a kitchen tool that’s often difficult to store. It’s highly recommended for those worried about storage space.
The slicer features non-slip grips on both the body and handle, providing stability and ensuring safe slicing. The transparent half of the body allows you to view the sliced food while using the slicer. It received satisfactory ratings for the overall slice quality. Although there is only one type of blade for slicing, the seven thickness levels provide enough functionality for slicing alone.
The slicer's simple construction makes it easy to clean and maintain. While it may not be multifunctional, the balance between quality slicing, safety, and easy storage makes it a user-friendly product.

The Joseph Joseph Multi-Grip Mandoline is a standard type slicer that comes with three options for thickness and a safety guard that features a tong-like shape. That tong-shaped safety guard is able to hold both large and small ingredients firmly. The non-slip grips on the body and handle allows for a secure grip even with wet hands. While in use, the slicer remains stable, enhancing its safety.
The slicer received satisfactory ratings for overall slice quality, offering smooth slicing with minimal effort. It can produce uniform thick slices, but thinner slices may be uneven. The drawbacks include being limited to just three thickness settings and having no functionality beyond slicing. The slicer's simple construction earned high ratings for ease of cleaning, and its compact size makes it easy to store. Overall, it’s a very user-friendly product.

The V Pro 5-Blade Mandoline Slicer by Mueller is a standard type slicer with nine thickness settings. It uses reinforced ABS plastic for high durability. The thing we appreciated most about this slicer was the consistency of the resulting food slices. It sits at an incline and the blade is sufficiently sharp, which allowed us to easily cut all kinds of foods like onions, potatoes, and cheese. Tomatoes, on the other hand, tended to get squashed, so it isn't necessarily geared toward softer foods.
This slicer also excels in functionality. It comes with five types of blades for cutting food into slices, wave slices, coarse shredding, fine shredding, and grating. You can also adjust the slicing thickness from one up to nine millimeters in nine steps, making for compatibility with a wide range of recipes. It has a collapsible stand to prevent slipping during use, along with a safety guard that holds your food in place, so you're less likely to cut yourself while slicing.
While it does benefit from being dishwasher-friendly, food can easily get caught in the indents on the underside, which takes time to clean. At 16 and three-quarter inches across, it's relatively large and will take up quite a bit of space in your drawer or cupboard. But even so, considering the consistency and quality of slicing, as well as the wide range of slice types, it's a great choice for people who like to try out new kinds of recipes often.

Prepworks by Progressive's Adjust-A-Slice is a standard type slicer with three thickness settings, designed to efficiently slice with an angled blade. This slicer's appeal is its clean, straight and even slices. The bottom of the slicer has a non-slip surface and ridges that allow it to rest securely on a bowl, providing stability while slicing. The handle is also non-slip, allowing you to get a solid grip even with wet hands. Additionally, the safety guard firmly holds the food in place, preventing any slipping and ensuring safe slicing.
With a simple structure and a compact one-and-three-quarter-inch height, the slicer received high ratings for ease of storage. However, its drawbacks include being limited to three thickness settings and lack of functionality beyond slicing. This slicer is recommended for those seeking a simple, easy-to-store slicer.

Fullstar's 11-in-1 Mandoline Slicer is a standard type slicer that comes mounted on a tray to catch food below. The blade is made of stainless steel and claims to be as sharp as a shaving razor. The maker's claims turned out to be true, and it delivered smooth and consistent slices. Tomatoes were harder to keep in one piece, but all the other foods we tried, including onions, potatoes, and cheese, sliced cleanly without getting stuck. It also comes with many different blades; in addition to the standard slicer, wave slicer, thick julienne, and thin julienne blades, it has a ribbon slicer, spiral slicer, and an egg slicer.
The catch tray that sits below the slicer has non-slip material which keeps the unit in place and prevents any sudden slipping. The safety guard has an indentation which keeps your food in place, and the long blade means you're not likely to hurt yourself while slicing. There isn't much texture on the slicer itself, so you can simply throw it in the dishwasher without constantly wiping off food scraps.
The downside is that you can only choose between two-millimeter and five-millimeter slices, which limits the type of recipes it can be used for. And at four by nine and 7/8 by 11 inches, storage can be an issue. Considering all the included blades, people who want to try slicing foods into a variety of shapes should keep it in mind.

The Super Slicer by Benriner is a standard type slicer with freely adjustable thickness. It features a handmade Japanese stainless steel blade and a roomy, easy-to-grip handle. With its unlimited adjustability, you can freely set the slice thickness between 0.5 and eight millimeters. There are no markings to measure thickness, so achieving the desired thickness takes some getting used to. However, the ability to slice to your preferred thickness can be considered an advantage.
The slicer comes with four blades, allowing for four types of cuts by switching out the blades. There are grooves on the end of the slicer for gripping the rim of a bowl, but the slicer's 14-inch length makes it difficult to hold in place and unstable while slicing. However, the blade is sharp, allowing for easy slicing with light pressure, and both thick and thin slices are cut evenly. This slicer is recommended for experienced cooks who want to slice their ingredients to their liking. Be aware that it is not dishwasher-safe.

The Pampered Chef Rapid-Prep Mandoline is a push type slicer with eight thickness levels. The slicer's most significant appeal is its high level of safety. There is no need to directly touch the food while slicing, so there’s a safe distance between your hand and the blade, minimizing the risk of injury. Slicing only requires gently pushing the handle, making it suitable for inexperienced cooks or children.
Because the food needs to be pushed while slicing, onions and tomatoes may turn out slightly watery. The slicer offers eight thickness adjustment levels and can make various cuts, making it highly versatile. However, the push-type design requires cutting the food to fit into the holder, an extra step compared to a standard type slicer. The slicer's complex structure and large 13-inch size make it difficult to clean by hand, and storing it can be a challenge. However, it is dishwasher-safe.

The DASH Safe Slice mandoline is a push type slicer with eight thickness options and a unique design that keeps hands away from the built-in blade. What makes this slicer attractive is how safe it is to use. Since there is no need to hold onto the food when slicing, there’s little risk of injury. And slicing only requires gently pushing the handle, making it suitable for inexperienced cooks or children. However, because ingredients need to be pushed while slicing, the slices of onions and tomatoes come out a bit watery.
The slicer is highly versatile, offering eight thickness settings and five types of cuts. But the design requires pre-cutting the ingredients to fit the opening on the pusher, a step that’s not needed with a standard type slicer. The slicer's complex construction and large 12.5-inch size make it difficult to clean and maintain, and storing it can be challenging. It is not dishwasher safe, either.

Swissmar Borner's standard type V-Slicer uses stainless steel for its blade. The maker says its super thin blade can cut even hard foods into even slices, and we had no complaints about this slicer's ability to cut food. The blade could even slice soft tomatoes without tearing or squashing them. Onions and potatoes were sliced at an even thickness and never got stuck. Only when we tried slicing cheese did some pieces get torn off, and slices didn't come out uniform. It's a bit of a hindrance if you plan on slicing cheese for a sandwich.
Since the body is rather large for a standard type slicer, at five and 5/16 inches across, you don't need to adjust it to fit the size of the food you're slicing. The safety guard holds your food in place firmly along the blade, so there's little worry of cutting yourself. The three included blades are for standard slices, thick julienne, and thin julienne. This seems like a lot on the surface, but the slicing thickness can only be set to three and a half or seven millimeters, which limits what recipes it will come in handy for.
This slicer isn't dishwasher-friendly, and on top of that, food gets stuck easily in the grooves on the bottom side. It's five and 5/16 inches across, 15 inches long, and three and 11/16 inches tall, which is large enough to make storage a hassle in some kitchens.

The 12-Blade Mandoline Slicer by Mueller is a standard type slicer that comes with a tray to catch food below. It also includes a tray specifically for catching food sliced using the spiral blade. This slicer scored points for its multi-functionality. In addition to the more common slicing, thick julienne, thin julienne, and grating blades, it also includes a ribbon slicer, spiral slicer, and small dicer. But the resulting slices weren't as consistent as some of the other products we looked at. Tomatoes often broke apart and leaked juice, while onions, potatoes, and cheese didn't stay consistent in thickness.
We didn't have any trouble with the slicer slipping around, thanks to the non-slip material on the bottom of the tray. The safety guard also did its job of keeping food secured in place, so you're unlikely to injure yourself while using it. Although it's dishwasher-safe, pieces of food often got stuck in the grooves on the bottom of the slicer, which affected its overall score. And while it's great that there are so many blade choices, the slicing thickness can't be adjusted. The unit is five and three-quarter inches tall, which will be too big to store in most kitchen drawers.

Kyocera's slicer is a standard type with three thickness settings and a durable ceramic blade made of their unique zirconia material. The slicer has a sharp blade, allowing for easy slicing with only light pressure. It can achieve uniform thick slices, but it has trouble with thinner slices. Additionally, the safety guard is too large, making it difficult to securely hold the food in place, so caution is needed.
While there are grooves near the end of the slicer designed to hold it in place over a bowl, depending on the bowl used, the groove size may be too large and not fit properly, causing it to move around while slicing. The slicer's 14-inch length can also make storage challenging. The fact that it is limited to three thickness options and only performs simple cuts sets this slicer back. However, the flat design with few ridges makes it easy to clean, which is a plus.

We tested each slicer for the following six things.
Products we tested
