Image quality is the most important factor when choosing a webcam. That doesn’t just mean how clearly it captures the person’s facial expressions, but also how natural the colors are. In order to prevent the computer’s specs or internet connection from interfering with the image quality, we tested the webcams by recording video offline, and had five testers watch them.We considered webcams that clearly captured the person’s facial expressions with natural colors to have good image quality. We evaluated them based on the following criteria:How natural the colors wereHow high the resolution appearedHow bright the person’s face was in direct lightHow bright the person’s face was when pointed at a light source
If you don’t plan to use headphones or a headset, make sure to check the webcam’s sound quality. For the test, we had five testers listen to prerecorded audio and evaluate its quality. We were looking for webcams with mics that only picked up the person’s voice and recorded it clearly. We were monitoring the following things in particular:Whether it picked up other sounds, such as computer fans and air conditionersWhether the person’s voice was muffled or if there was an echoWhether it picked up mouth noisesWhether the person’s voice was cut off
Motion tracking is important if you want to smoothly capture gestures or physical documents. In order to test the products, we recorded three videos: a person moving left and right, bringing their face close to the camera and moving back, and waving at the camera. We then had our five testers evaluate how well it followed movement.Webcams that focused the subject at any distance and easily captured movements were considered the best in this area. We paid particular attention to the following:Did it capture fluid movement when the person moved to the left and right?Did it hold focus when the person moved forward and backward? Was the movement smooth when waving?Could you make out the shape of the hand when the person waved?
A wide field of view is essential to project your gestures effectively. For products that list the horizontal field of view, we converted it to diagonal field of view. The wider the field of view, the better. We found that those with a field of view of 80 degrees or more capture most of the upper body and allow for effective gestures.
When it comes to laptops, it’s important that they can be set up and used quickly. We had our testers set up the webcams and let us know how hard it was. Ideally, the webcam can be quickly attached right before a meeting and swiftly adjusted to the right angle. We were looking to answer the following questions:Ease of attachment to the computerCan it be attached quickly?Does the picture become unstable when the angle is adjusted slightly? Is it small enough not to block the screen?Ease of angle adjustmentCan it easily be moved up, down, left, and right while attached?Does it stay firmly attached when adjusted? Can it be adjusted precisely to the desired angle?

Some new webcams can automatically adjust the brightness and change the field of view. The Insta360 Link is equipped with AI functionality that allows you to control it hands-free. You can use gestures to quickly change between zoom mode and tracking mode, which automatically follows your movements.
EMEET's cameras can be aimed downward, so you can record work on your desk. Aluratek's webcams with ring lights illuminate your eyes and give your face a brighter color. There’s plenty of variation, so you can choose the best webcam for your needs.
Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Webcams.
It goes without saying that the most important thing when it comes to webcams is picture quality. Without using any software to modify the settings, we asked five testers to evaluate the video quality captured with the default settings. We found two factors that influenced how good the picture was.
You always want to make a good first impression, especially when meeting clients or someone for the first time, and a high-quality webcam can naturally brighten your face. As an example, Logitech webcams differ greatly in terms of brightness, color, and vividness, despite being produced by the same company.
The C920x HD Pro is a high-resolution camera that captures the color of your shirt vividly and projects your face with a natural brightness that helps the other person see your expressions clearly. On the other hand, the HD Webcam’s colors are dull overall and it overexposes skin. It also makes facial lines ambiguous, making it hard to read someone’s expression.
Resolution and brightness both influence picture quality. During testing, we found that an automatic brightness adjustment function significantly influenced how well the person’s face was captured.
Webcams that can automatically adjust brightness can also clearly capture the face without shadows, even when pointed toward a light source. On the other hand, if your webcam doesn’t have these features, your face will be pitch black when it’s pointed at a source of light.
No matter how good the resolution is, it won’t make a difference without the right functions. If you do video chats in various different places, we recommend looking for a webcam that can adjust to different kinds of lighting automatically.
If you want your facial expressions to be conveyed clearly, you shouldn’t go below 1080p. This is because 1080p is the standard resolution for most computers and monitors these days.
While 720p may look fine on a smaller screen, such as a smartphone, the picture quality will be less detailed and blurry when viewed on a larger display. At 1080p, you can clearly see a person’s eyes and mouth. Most webcams integrated into laptops are 720p, so upgrading to a 1080p webcam can make a big difference in quality.
Among the products we tested for this article, all the ones that captured high-quality video were 1080p. The Insta360 had the best picture quality of the group and adjusted well to different lighting, capturing a person’s face clearly even when aimed at a light source.
Our second highest-rated product, the EMEET, displayed vivid natural coloration down to individual hairs. It was easy to distinguish the different sections of the face and see even subtle expressions.
The Logitech C920x HD Pro is a popular product that also produces beautiful image quality. It automatically adjusts the brightness to match the color of your clothes and the brightness of your face.
Even if the image quality is good, it won't look it if it’s out of focus. If you plan to hold presentation materials close to the camera, you need to be especially sure to check what kind of focus technique it uses.
Look for a webcam with autofocus capabilities with good performance up close if you want to hold up documents or products close to the lens. Some webcams can automatically adjust to focus on the subject, while others can only focus on objects within the fixed focal range.
For most fixed-focus webcams, the subject needs to be two to three feet away in order to be in focus, so they aren’t ideal for close-up shots. You may want to avoid these products if you need to show documents or objects during presentations or live streams.
If you want to show documents or products during a presentation or live stream, it’s critical that your webcam can focus quickly. We found in our test that not all products with an autofocus feature bring objects into focus at the same speed. The Insta360 Link was able to quickly focus on a tube of lipstick and vividly project the fine print. It kept the person’s face in focus and clearly captured them even when they were talking up close.
On the other hand, it took about 30 seconds to adjust when webcams did not focus properly. You have to use subtle movements to find the right spot to get in focus, which can be a major waste of time during an actual meeting.
If you need to capture notebook drawings or documents spread out on your desk, look for a webcam that can face downward. You can change subjects smoothly if you can change the angle without moving the webcam itself. Among the products in this article, only the Insta360 Link and EMEET are able to do this.
Even with a high-quality web camera, you may feel disappointed if it can’t completely capture your face, gestures, or movements. Think about the actual size of the screen and look for a webcam with an adequate field of view for what you want to capture.
Gestures are essential during a presentation to increase your persuasiveness and facilitate smooth communication. A field of view over 80 degrees is best to make sure your gestures are captured effectively. This field of view extends from the chest up, so it won’t cut off your gestures.
Conversely, a 60-degree field of view only covers from the collarbone up, so it may only capture your fingers and make your gestures difficult to understand. If you want to make dynamic gestures with your entire upper body, we suggest looking for a field of view over 90 degrees.
However, the larger the field of view, the more of your surroundings it will show, so make sure to move or cover up things you don’t want to show on camera.
If your webcam microphone has good sound quality, you don’t need a headset to transmit clear audio.
If you want to do video chats without earphones or a headset, look for an internal mic that supports noise-canceling and reduction. If your mic picks up the sound of your air conditioner or computer fans, not only is it uncomfortable for other people, but it can disturb the flow of the conversation.
Webcams that clearly transmitted the person’s voice without picking up background noise were evaluated highly. On the other hand, we docked a lot of points for picking up other sounds, even if the person’s voice was clearly audible.
Only the Logitech C920x HD Pro and Insta360 Link had high-quality audio among the products we tested. Both cameras feature superb noise-canceling and had overwhelmingly clearer audio than the other products.
Even if environmental noise doesn’t disturb the conversation, it can be unpleasant to some people. Since you can’t hear your own voice going through the microphone, you don’t know how it sounds to the other person. We found through the testing process that some people didn’t mind the sounds at all, while others found the sounds picked up by the same product very unpleasant.
We think it’s best to look for a product with noise-canceling to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable conversation for the other party.
Insta360 was founded in 2015 and develops original products, primarily focusing on action cameras. The Insta360 Link is a 4K webcam equipped with AI that detects and tracks the subject automatically. You can enable AI tracking, zoom in and out, or switch to whiteboard mode with gestures. It also has a privacy setting that automatically points the camera downward if you haven't spoken for 10 seconds.
This camera demonstrated natural colors and captured even hair and skin in great detail. It has incredible automatic adjustment functions, preventing the person's face from being darkened when the camera faces a light source and clearly projecting facial expressions. It also has autofocus support, allowing seamless focusing even on up-close objects. It smoothly captures motion when the user moves to the left and right or waves their hands.
Its diagonal field of view is 79.5 degrees, which is enough not to impede your gestures during presentations. The camera can rotate 90 degrees, making it useful for livestreaming and making short clips for YouTube or TikTok as well. It also features a desk view mode, in which the lens aims down and records your desk.
On top of all that, it has high sound quality thanks to its noise-canceling microphone. It cuts out unnecessary noise and transmits your voice clearly. While it does come with a hefty price tag, its image and audio quality are top-notch, and it has plenty of useful features. This webcam is best in class, not only for meetings, but for livestreaming, too.

EMEET specializes in the development of speakerphones and webcams. Their 1080p Webcam with Microphone comes with an adhesive privacy cover for those who need one. The colors are very natural and the camera projects the person’s face in fine detail, presenting a three-dimensional view of their facial expressions. It automatically adjusts the brightness based on the subject and there was hardly any overexposure. The person’s face doesn’t appear especially bright when facing a light source, but it’s not too dark to make out their facial expressions.
The motion tracking on this webcam is superb, as it smoothly follows the person’s face even when they move drastically to the left or right. Despite being a fixed-focus model, it has a good depth of field that allows it to focus quickly, even up close. Its 90-degree diagonal field of view allows it to capture the entire upper body. If you adjust the distance, you should be able to record two people at the same time. It’s easy to attach and adjust, as you simply need to clip it on.
However, the noise-canceling was not as good as we'd hoped. It projected the person’s voice clearly, so it probably wouldn’t disrupt a conversation, but it does pick up some other noises that could bother some people. It offers excellent image quality at a reasonable price, so we recommend this product to those who aren’t concerned about the internal mic. You can also capture your desk by aiming the lens downward, which will come in handy if you want to share documents or demonstrate something.

The C920x HD Pro is produced by Logitech, a company that deals in a wide variety of computer peripherals on a global scale. It’s a 1080p webcam with a 78-degree diagonal field of view and its settings can be adjusted via a smartphone app, although we did not use the app when testing it.
It automatically adjusts the picture quality based on the color of your clothes and skin tone to display your face’s natural shadows. There was a bit of overexposure when facing a light source, but it wasn’t enough to be concerning. It takes about one second to adjust under these conditions, but the brightness is sufficient to make out your facial expressions. It has autofocus capabilities and brings your face in focus within one to two seconds after moving it towards the camera.
On the other hand, it struggles to track movement. There’s a noticeable afterimage when waving or making large movements to the side. It captures a person from the chest up, so it facilitates using gestures for communication. Its internal mic doesn’t pick up a lot of noise and it’s easy to understand the speaker.
The webcam is extremely easy to attach, as you simply have to place it on. It has excellent anti-slipping measures, so it can be adjusted precisely without sliding off. While it struggles to capture movement, it has excellent image and audio quality, making it suitable for online meetings.

Aluratek specializes in smartphone accessories and computer parts. Their LIVE 1080p HD Webcam with a ring light has three different brightness levels. As far as image quality is concerned, it does have a bit of a bluish tint, but it’s still within the natural range. We noticed a bit of overexposure when wearing white clothes, but there were no issues with any other colors and the resolution was crisp.
The camera does have an autofocus feature, but the minimum distance is about three inches, making it unsuitable for coins and other small objects. It doesn’t track movement well and leaves some blurring, but refocuses quickly afterwards. Its field of view is 74 degrees, capturing video from the chest up and keeping gestures in the shot.
However, the internal mic picks up small sounds, and the speaker’s voice sounds somewhat muffled. It's easy to attach and is flexible when it comes to adjusting the angle. The ring light illuminates your face, making it easy to see your facial expressions. If this is usually difficult because of the lighting in your room, this product can be an effective solution.

The NexiGo N930AF is a 1080p webcam with autofocus and a 74-degree-angle field of view. It distinctly captures facial features and wrinkles in your clothes, but tends to overexpose a bit on colors close to white. The brightness adjustment features are adequate, and though the person’s face does appear a bit dark when the camera is pointed at a light source, it’s bright enough to make out facial expressions.
It tracked motion well, as it captured the face clearly even during vigorous motion to the side. It focused on objects within one to two seconds, even when they were close up, which is very useful when sharing documents directly with the camera. On the other hand, the mic doesn’t eliminate noise completely and constantly emits a slight scratching sound, which could bother some people. It also picks up mouth sounds, so it’s not so easy to understand the speaker.
While it’s simple to attach, it feels unstable when adjusting the angle. But we think this webcam is good for people who give a lot of presentations using frequent gestures, as it captures movement well and covers from the chest up.

This 2K webcam by AnkerWork features an adjustable field of view that can be set to 65, 78, or 95 degrees using an app. It has a high resolution and captures clear video, but it looks like a yellow filter has been applied when using the default settings. For the test, we left every unit on its default setting for the sake of consistency, but this webcam could only achieve natural colors by using an app to update its firmware.
In addition, it doesn’t excel at capturing motions such as waving and vigorous movements. It has autofocus, but it takes a while to focus and sometimes focuses on the background if your face is close to the camera. The mic is omnidirectional by default, so it picks up a large range of sounds and causes audio quality to decline. These sounds get quieter when you start talking, but they are quite loud at the beginning.
It can be attached by simply clipping it to the monitor. It doesn’t have great image or audio quality out of the box, so you need to install an app. If you’re looking for a simple plug-and-play webcam, you might want to look elsewhere.

This 1080p webcam by Elgato features an 82-degree field of view. It comes with an attached privacy cover, but doesn’t have an internal mic. This webcam captures facial features clearly in different kinds of light, but has a bluish tint, and the image sometimes appears dark depending on the color of clothing and skin tone.
While it’s a fixed-focus type camera, it tracks movement well and focuses quickly even when someone moves their face forward and backward. This webcam would work well for presentations with many gestures. However, it's rather bulky and really sticks out when attached to a laptop. While it can be flexibly adjusted to different angles, it’s not very secure and it has a heavy cord, which can sometimes move the camera on its own. Overall, it’s a bit difficult to use.

This is one of the many webcams aimed at businesses produced by Logitech. It’s a compact product that can fit in one hand. It has a 720p resolution and is fixed-focus. This camera showed significant overexposure in direct light, and when aimed at a light source, the user was almost completely dark. You’ll need to arrange your room properly if you want to use this webcam for online meetings.
To make matters worse, it doesn’t exactly track movement well, either. Since its focus is fixed, it doesn’t focus on close-up objects. With a diagonal field of view of only 60 degrees, you have to carefully plan where you point the camera to capture gestures. While it’s not enough to disrupt a conversation, the mic constantly picked up a slight noise. The speaker didn’t sound muffled, and there was no echo, but we noticed some deterioration when the person spoke loudly.
It’s moderately priced, but you get what you pay for. We recommend looking for a different product if you’re looking for good image quality.
