How We Tested the Products

Scroll to testing method
We gathered the 7 bestselling Racing Wheels and put them through rigorous testing.
  1. Driving Ease and Precision

    1
    Driving Ease and Precision

For this test, we assembled five racing game veterans, had them use each wheel, and give us their impressions. They played “Forza Horizon 5” and raced on various surfaces, evaluating the performance with the following criteria in mind:CriteriaThe feel of driving on gravel and concreteHandlingFeel of the pedalsComfort when playingGame Used: Forza Horizon 5PC Used: Gaming Desktop PC Astromeda v00002-1PC Specs: Core i7-12700FGeForce-RTX3070TiRGB Memory 16 GBx21 TB SSDNo hard driveWindows 11 Home850 W PSUIntel LGA1700 Micro-ATXBlack case

  2. Realistic Feel and Design

    2
    Realistic Feel and Design

We tested the quality of the materials and angle of the pedals to determine how realistic each product looks and feels, and the closer it was to an actual car, the better. We only considered genuine attachments, such as pedals and levers, and didn’t take parts sold separately into account. We looked to answer the following question about each product:Is the steering wheel made of realistic material, such as leather, urethane, rubber, or plastic? What material are the pedals made of? (aluminum, steel, or plastic)Do the pedals have a load cell sensor (changes pressure to a numerical value, like a scale) or a volume sensor (reads the location of the pedal)?Does it come with a shifter? Are the pedals adjustable? Is there FFB?

  3. Customization

    3
    Customization

Finally, we tested the degree of freedom offered by each product in regard to settings, and products with plentiful options available that can be customized to your liking were evaluated highly. Settings that can be changed in-game were not considered. We looked at the following factors in regard to customization:Whether or not you can adjust the intensity of the FFBSupported hardwareWhether or not you can adjust dead zonesWhether or not you can remap buttonsWhether or not you can turn the centering spring on and off

Why Use a Racing Wheel Instead of a Normal Controller?

Racing Wheels Are More Precise and Create a More Authentic Experience

Racing Wheels Are More Precise and Create a More Authentic Experience

You can play racing games with a standard controller, but it’s hard to pull off techniques like drifting and cornering with a thumbstick, and it doesn’t feel like actual driving. In addition, the brake and gas pedals are assigned to a single button, which is either pressed or released with no room in between.

With a racing wheel, you can enjoy a realistic and intuitive driving experience, making racing games more thrilling while optimizing your race times. You can tackle difficult courses and pull off advanced techniques as if you were actually behind the wheel.

If you want to upgrade your racing experience and advance your skills to the next level, you should consider getting a racing wheel.

Make Sure to Check if Your Hardware Is Supported Before Buying

Make Sure to Check if Your Hardware Is Supported Before Buying

Not all wheels can be used with every gaming system. If you buy one that doesn’t work with your console, you won’t be able to use it.

In particular, wheels with FFB (force feedback) functionality can often only be used with certain gaming consoles, such as Xbox and PS5. We included the supported hardware for each wheel in our rankings, so be sure to check if it can be used with your device.

Some wheels have to be switched to a different mode depending on the hardware used. Most models can either switch between PC, PS4, and PS5 modes or Xinput (the standard for Xbox 360 controllers, which doesn’t need key assignment) and Dinput (an old standard that does require key assignment) modes. We included this in our ranking as well.

How to Choose Racing Wheels

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Racing Wheels.

1

Look For FFB if You Want a Realistic Driving Experience

FFB Makes You Feel Like You’re Really on the Road

FFB Makes You Feel Like You’re Really on the Road

FFB is short for Force Feedback, a feature that vibrates the wheel according to the road surface and adjusts the weight of the wheel depending on your speed. Driving on a bumpy road, such as in the desert or on gravel, will cause the wheel to shake, while speeding up will increase the resistance of the wheel, delivering a true-to-life experience.

This makes it easier to execute high-level maneuvers, such as drifting or cornering around a tight curve. As a bonus, the different vibrations really immerse you in the game.

It is said that being able to win by pulling off advanced moves is the appeal of racing games, but adding on the appeal of realistic driving drives the experience to new horizons. FFB completely changes the game and adds a whole new layer of excitement to the genre.

FFB Recreates the Sensation of Drifting and Cornering

FFB Recreates the Sensation of Drifting and Cornering

The perfect drift requires just the right amount of speed and precise timing. You can gauge the state of the car through the wheel, such as when the wheel gets heavier or the power of the turn, as if you were actually driving it.

With FFB, you can feel the exact moment the road curves or changes to a different surface, allowing for more precise movements. Catching onto these changes quickly will give you a massive advantage over other players.

Racing Wheels With FFB Create an Authentic and Engaging Experience

Racing Wheels With FFB Create an Authentic and Engaging Experience

We had testers try out racing wheels with and without FFB, and the results were dramatically different.

In particular, the testers really liked wheels with FFB by ThrustMaster and Logitech. They praised the ease of handling and stated that the resistance when steering was realistic based on the movement of the vehicle, as applying force is necessary to keep the wheel under control.

2

Wheels That Can Turn 1080 Degrees Like an Actual Car Feel Realistic

Products Differ in Terms of How Much the Wheel Can Turn

Products Differ in Terms of How Much the Wheel Can Turn

The steering wheel in a standard car can turn 1080 degrees or three rotations. This is also true of race cars.

Racing wheels can turn anywhere from 180 to 1080 degrees, but the closer you can get to the range of a real car, the more realistic it will feel when backing up, turning right, and performing other actions that require you to turn the wheel frequently.

If the Wheel Has a Limited Turning Range, It Won’t Match Up With the Game

If the Wheel Has a Limited Turning Range, It Won’t Match Up With the Game

Some racing games allow you to play from a first-person perspective. This gives you a narrower field of vision compared to a third-person view and is more suited for experienced players. A racing wheel can make this perspective feel more immersive. However, if the wheel has a limited range of rotation, it won’t match up with the wheel on the screen and will take away from the level of engagement.

Regardless of whether you’re playing in first-person or not, you’ll have to adjust how you turn the wheel to match the wheel in-game if it doesn’t line up well, which can take away from your enjoyment of the game.

A Wheel With 1080 Degrees of Rotation Feels Like Driving in Real Life

A Wheel With 1080 Degrees of Rotation Feels Like Driving in Real Life

For this article, we looked at products ranging from 270 degrees to 1080 degrees of rotation.

We found that if you can turn it at least 900 degrees, it’s easy to control. When it comes to drifting and cornering, our testers preferred products that could turn 1080 degrees.

Conversely, wheels that couldn’t turn more than 360 degrees made it hard to control the car in-game and were overall difficult to use. Not only that, but you have to adjust the sensitivity and dead zones to account for the limited range of rotation, which is a real pain. Whether you are new to racing games or an experienced veteran, you want to be able to turn it at least 900 degrees.

3

Look for a Metal Pedal That Is as Close to Perpendicular as Possible

We’ve focused on the wheel thus far, but the pedals are just as important. The faithful reproduction of the gas, brake, and clutch pedals is essential for a great racing game.

Metal Pedals Are Easy to Use Thanks to Their Weight

Metal Pedals Are Easy to Use Thanks to Their Weight

Most pedals that come with racing wheels are made from metal or plastic. We tested products made from both materials for this article and found that metal ones not only provided a more real-to-life experience, but were also more user-friendly.

Metal is heavier than plastic, making it easier to make slight adjustments. This helps you control your speed more easily and reduce the risk of applying too much or too little pressure, pulling you further into the racing experience to make you feel like a true racer.

Since plastic pedals are lighter, you run the risk of pushing the gas harder than intended. We recommend going with metal to avoid this.

If They Are Close to Perpendicular, It’s Easier to Change Pedals

If They Are Close to Perpendicular, It’s Easier to Change Pedals

The angle of the pedals is very important for stable operation. They are placed at an angle in real cars for this reason as well.

At the right angle, you can push forward on the gas and brake as if you were actually behind the wheel. Because stepping on the pedals feels realistic, you can drift and corner like you were really driving.

If the angle of the pedal is too flat, the range of motion is limited and you have to push it down from above, making it hard to operate. Because you only have a little space to work with, it’s almost like playing with a controller in that you can’t adjust how far you’re pressing the pedal as much as you’d like.

Ease of Use Differed Greatly Between Products

Ease of Use Differed Greatly Between Products

After testing a variety of products, the consensus was that nearly perpendicular pedals made of metal were the most comfortable to use. Our testers remarked that they had good resilience, the springs worked well, and it was easy to control their speed with the gas pedal.

Plastic pedals were too light and made it harder to apply the exact amount of force desired when attempting complex maneuvers. There were complaints that it was hard to make precise adjustments and that they often pressed the gas or brake too hard.

If you’re looking for the optimal driving experience, go with metal pedals at a wide angle.

For Newcomers, the Lightly Customizable Logitech Is a Good Place to Start

Comes With Top-Class Software and Allows Minor Adjustments

Comes With Top-Class Software and Allows Minor Adjustments

Configuring the advanced settings on a racing wheel can be hard, so if you’re new to the game, you’ll need to do some research. Also, be wary of products that come without software. For example, the PXN requires complicated driver installation and is set up via your smartphone, so it can be confusing for beginners.

Logitech’s “G Hub” software makes your settings easy to understand and uses simple sliders to adjust dead zones, brake sensitivity, and other options. This makes it intuitive to use even if this is your first racing wheel, so you can focus on enjoying the game.

Plug and Play Without Worrying About Complicated Settings

Plug and Play Without Worrying About Complicated Settings

Some racing wheels won’t work properly unless you install the necessary drivers first. In particular, wheels with FFB won’t give you the right feedback unless you set them up properly.

The wheels from Logitech can be used right away and don’t require as much tedious setup as some other models. It comes with a lot of in-game presets as well, so you can hop right into the action.

mybest’s Top Choice! Realistic FBB and Design and Abundant Customization Options

Logitech, known for their gaming keyboards and mice, have developed the G923 TRUEFORCE Racing Wheel. It makes use of Logitech’s proprietary TRUEFORCE feedback to deliver a realistic experience that can’t be beaten.

Our testers found this product very easy to use, as the steering wheel had just the right amount of weight, and the pedals were perpendicular to the floor. The FFB is also very realistic and allows you to feel slight changes when driving over gravel or along a river. In particular, the weight of the handle feels very true to life when cornering and accelerating. Our testers mentioned that traveling on rough surfaces and crashing into objects felt very realistic, creating an engaging and enjoyable driving experience.

The wheel is made of leather and aluminum and feels like one you’d find in a real sports car. It rotates up to 900 degrees, so it takes a little time to get used to drifting and cornering.

You can adjust various settings via the G Hub software, such as the gas and brake pedal, dead zones, and the centering spring mechanism, which returns the wheel to the neutral position automatically. You don’t need to install any drivers to use it, so you can jump right into races. With its vast array of customization options, this product is perfect for players who want to recreate the most authentic driving experience.

It comes with the wheel and pedals only. If you want to drive a manual, you’ll need to purchase the shifter separately or use the paddle on the backside. It supports a wide variety of popular games, from Gran Turismo to Forza Horizon 5, and is perfect for anyone, regardless of experience.

Powerful FFB and Pressure-Sensing Pedals Facilitate Immersion

Next, we have another product from Logitech. This time, we’re taking a look at the G29 Driving Force Racing Wheel. It boasts powerful dual-motor force feedback, generating realistic feedback that allows you to react to the movement of the vehicle quickly and accurately.

Our testers said that the feedback transmitted to the wheel is strong and feels very real when you’re driving through a desert, over water, or cornering. This is perfect for people who really want to get immersed in the game, as the feedback responds to the thrilling maneuvers performed during the race. The pedals have a pressure sensor that adjusts how strongly the brake is applied based on how much pressure is placed on the pedal, allowing you to make precise adjustments, just like driving in real life. This allows you to perform complex driving techniques.

The wheel is made of hand-sewn leather and feels like one you’d find in a high-end vehicle. It can only rotate 900 degrees, so it’s not quite the same as a real car, but we didn’t have any trouble with cornering and other actions. It has thick metal pedals that are nearly perpendicular to the floor, making them comfortable to use.

This racing wheel also supports the G Hub software, which allows you to modify dead zones and the key configuration. You can save different setting profiles for each game, so you can have one for Gran Turismo, one for Forza Horizon, and so on.

As long as the game is supported, you don’t need to install additional drivers to play, and it performs the key configuration automatically. It doesn’t require a complicated setup or installation, so it’s ideal for those looking to get into the racing genre for the first time.

Pedals Are Light, but Varied Feedback Makes Steering a Breeze

Thrustmaster is a company that produces flight simulation sticks and racing wheels. The T150 Force Feedback has an ergonomic design, and they claim it fits every racing style.

We found this wheel to be rather quiet but felt appropriate feedback for in-game situations. The FFB varied when going off-road or driving over water, so you could really feel whatever surface you were on.

On the other hand, the pedals are a bit light and set diagonally, making it hard to get the right amount of force and switch pedals. The wheel isn’t made of leather but rather of rubber and plastic. However, the paddle shifter is made of metal, and it has 1080 degrees of rotation. The pedals are made of plastic and don’t have grooves, so there is a chance that your foot will slip off when pressing them down hard. If you want to master advanced techniques, it might be a good idea to purchase some metal ones separately.

It doesn’t have any software for setup and only needs to install some drivers, which don’t install automatically, but rather need to be downloaded from the official website.

Lacks Realism in Design and Handling, but Comes With a Variety of Accessories

The ES900R Suzuka Wheel 900R is produced by Flashfire, which makes arcade sticks and racing wheels. It comes with a shifter and can connect to your phone via Bluetooth.

It’s easy to steer and does vibrate, but it doesn’t provide any additional feedback when compared to a normal controller. Our testers found that the feedback didn’t change according to the road or conditions, and the best they could say is that it was better than nothing. The vibration itself is weak but keeps going while you’re driving, making it hard to accelerate and drift. It comes with a six-speed shifter but sometimes doesn’t register after key configuration, so those who want to drive manual transmissions should be careful.

The wheel is made of plastic, but the grips become slippery when your hands are sweaty, which can lead to losing your grip when drifting or cornering during a long session. While the pedals are made of aluminum, they are rather light. There are three pedals, but there is enough space between them to make changing pedals easy. However, the pedals themselves leave much to be desired in terms of stability and realism.

While it comes with everything you need for a manual transmission, it doesn’t feel realistic or engulf you in the world, so this isn’t the best choice if you’re looking for an immersive experience.

While it does have extensive compatibility and a centering spring, you have to install an app on your phone to adjust the dead zones and pedal sensitivity. It connects via Bluetooth, but it’s inconvenient to take out your phone to adjust the settings.

Allows for Unique Profiles for Each Game, but Doesn’t Measure up in Terms of Realism

PXN develops joysticks and gaming headsets and also has this V9 Racing Steering Wheel in their lineup. It comes with a shifter, and you can change the settings for each game using the smartphone app.

It has a lot of dead zones with the default settings, which makes it hard to steer precisely. It’s especially difficult when driving off-road and cornering, and it feels like you need to rotate the wheel very hard to get it to turn. The pedals are made of aluminum and have a soft spring, so they feel really light when stepped on.

The plastic and rubber wheel doesn’t feel very real in your hands, but it can turn 900 degrees, making it easier to drift. The included shifter has a toggle switch that lets you change it between feeling stiff or more flexible. When set to the stiff mode, it takes a little strength to pull the lever, which feels authentic.

The app includes a list of supported games and performs the key configuration for you. You can adjust the dead zones and the strength of the vibration, but you have to do it on your phone rather than your computer, which is a bit of a hassle.

On top of that, you have to connect it to your phone using Bluetooth, which requires the latest firmware. It takes a lot of work to get it set up, so be careful if this is your first racing wheel.

The Pedals Slide and the Vibration Makes It Harder to Use

From gaming furniture to devices, Hori deals in a wide variety of fields. Their Racing Wheel Apex can be used without software and allows you to adjust the linearity, giving you seven levels to choose from.

While it does vibrate, it constantly shakes gently during play and actually makes it harder to control. It continuously vibrates when drifting and cornering or while driving through deserts or along rivers, so it doesn’t adjust to the situation or deliver an engaging experience.

The pedals are attached to a board that makes them comfortable for your feet, but when you push them down, they slide around a lot. It’s a real pain to have to readjust the position of the pedals because they slid around during play. If you want to perform a lot of extreme techniques, you should buy the stopper that is sold separately.

The sides of the steering wheel are made of rubber and serve as grips, but they’re hard to hold on to when your hands are sweaty. On top of that, the paddles are on the smaller side, so driving a manual can be hard if you have small hands. The wheel can only be turned 270 degrees, so the rotation of the wheel and the movement of the car don’t always line up. This product isn’t the best option if you want to play in first-person.

It doesn’t have any software, but the settings can be changed by pressing a combination of buttons on the controller. You can also adjust the settings in-game, but it’s a hassle to look at or memorize commands to change the settings.

The Wheel Is Very Sensitive and the Pedals Can’t Be Pushed Down Well

In addition to their arcade sticks and Switch controllers, Hori also makes racing wheels. This wheel has a button that allows you to immediately change profiles depending on what game you're playing.

The wheel itself is very sensitive and reacts drastically to every movement. However, the unit is relatively light, so it’s easy to turn it harder than intended. When you try to drift or take a corner as you usually would, the car turns too much due to its high sensitivity.

While the dead zones can be adjusted, the natural sensitivity of the wheel takes some time to get used to. While the dead zones can be adjusted, the natural sensitivity of the wheel takes some time to get used to. The plastic pedals are light, as you would expect plastic ones to be, so it lacks a realistic feel.

The wheel is made of rubber and comes with grips. During testing, the controller was not recognized when starting and finishing a game, so it had to be unplugged and plugged back in. The paddle is rather small and hard to operate, so this isn’t the best choice for driving a manual transmission if you don’t buy a shifter to go with it. The pedals are made of plastic and don’t have grooves, so they tend to slide when pressed down strongly.

Realistic Feel and Design

Realistic Feel and Design

We tested the quality of the materials and angle of the pedals to determine how realistic each product looks and feels, and the closer it was to an actual car, the better. We only considered genuine attachments, such as pedals and levers, and didn’t take parts sold separately into account.

We looked to answer the following question about each product:
  • Is the steering wheel made of realistic material, such as leather, urethane, rubber, or plastic?
  • What material are the pedals made of? (aluminum, steel, or plastic)
  • Do the pedals have a load cell sensor (changes pressure to a numerical value, like a scale) or a volume sensor (reads the location of the pedal)?
  • Does it come with a shifter?
  • Are the pedals adjustable?
  • Is there FFB?

Customization

Customization

Finally, we tested the degree of freedom offered by each product in regard to settings, and products with plentiful options available that can be customized to your liking were evaluated highly. Settings that can be changed in-game were not considered.

We looked at the following factors in regard to customization:
  • Whether or not you can adjust the intensity of the FFB
  • Supported hardware
  • Whether or not you can adjust dead zones
  • Whether or not you can remap buttons
  • Whether or not you can turn the centering spring on and off
