How We Tested the Products

We gathered the 10 bestselling Jigsaws and put them through rigorous testing.
  1. Ease of Cutting Curves

    1
    Ease of Cutting Curves

Since being able to cut along curves is one of its biggest advantages, you'll definitely want to know how well a jigsaw can handle cutting a curved line before buying it. For this test, we cut a light curve into a piece of ⅜ x 1 ½ plywood, using scribe lines, and asked five testers to score the following four factors. Was it easy to follow the scribe line? How long did it take to finish cutting? Is the handle easy to grip?Did it vibrate? We made sure each jigsaw was equipped with the same blade.TPI: Eight teeth per inchMaterial: Carbon steelMaximum cut depth: Two inches

  2. Ease of Cutting Straight Lines

    2
    Ease of Cutting Straight Lines

The cutting power of a jigsaw is hard to judge just by looking at how many strokes per minute it cuts at. So we asked five testers to try cutting a straight line through a 2x4 wood slab and assess the following three points. Can it follow scribe lines?Does it cut sufficiently fast?Did it vibrate? We used the same blade as in the first test.

  3. Included Accessories and Functions

    3
    Included Accessories and Functions

When you're buying a jigsaw for the first time, you'll probably want one that comes with all the accessories needed for successful woodworking. Having features that make preparation and cleanup easy is an added convenience. Does it come with its own storage case?Does it come with blades? Those that included two or more blades or different types of blades were given extra points. Is it compatible with one-touch blade changing?Does it have a dust nozzle for quick installation of a dust collector or dust blower?Does it require tools to adjust the cutting angle?

  4. Accuracy

    4
    Accuracy

One appeal of jigsaws is that they allow for cutting at an angle. In this test, we checked whether the angle cut into the material was the same as the number shown on the scale shown on the jigsaw. Because defects in the shoe can affect precision, we also looked at the durability of each jigsaw's shoe.Accuracy at zero degrees: Used at its factory setting, how accurate is it when cutting a 90-degree angle?Accuracy at 45 degrees: How close is the cut to a true 45-degree angle when adjusted to the 45-degree mark on the jigsaw's ruler?Shoe material and coating: Is the shoe made from aluminum or another metal which is resistant to warping to prevent damage from shocks? Has it been coated to improve usability?Shoe reinforcement: Has the shoe been reinforced to withstand stress and improve durability?

  5. Ease of Use

    5
    Ease of Use

It's extremely helpful when a jigsaw comes with features that make it easier to handle and manipulate. So we awarded points to each one based on whether it had features for improving cutting accuracy and safety. Is it cordless? If not, is the cord long enough? We think the ideal weight is about 5 ½ to 6 ½pounds, which is heavy enough to be secure when put down but still light enough to hold easily. Does it fall in that range? Is there a way to adjust the cutting speed for use with different materials? Can you adjust the cutting speed by changing the amount of pressure applied to the trigger?Does it include an LED light to illuminate the cutting area?Does it have an orbital action setting to help cut through thicker material?Does it have a dust blower function to make it easier to see scribe lines?

How Are Jigsaws Different From Other Cutting Tools?

In addition to jigsaws, there are other power tools used for cutting. These include reciprocating and circular saws, and angle grinders. As you shop, you may be wondering which one you should choose for your workshop.

Jigsaws Are Good at Cutting Curves or Other Tricky Shapes

Jigsaws Are Good at Cutting Curves or Other Tricky Shapes

Jigsaws are notable for their ability to cut along curves or other complicated patterns, and are particularly useful on wood. By using a long blade, you can even cut through thick lumber if time isn't an issue. The tradeoff of a jigsaw is that the blade can easily wobble or distort the cutting surface, so they aren't recommended for cutting in perfectly straight lines.

Reciprocating saws are preferable to jigsaws when you want to make rough cuts. They are good for jobs where you aren't concerned about getting a clean finish, like pruning, cutting trees or demolition work.

Circular saws make for smooth cuts with a faster cutting time than a jigsaw, but the downfall is that they can only cut in a straight line. They are great cutting tools for when you need to cut through a large amount of material or want to cut in a precise, straight line.

Angle grinders are best for cutting through metaland polishing woodThey are not recommended for cutting wood. The blade oscillates extremely quickly, which can be dangerous if it results in kickback. If you are only working on a wooden surface, you should use an angle grinder like you would a sander to polish the surface.

Jigsaw Can Be Used to Make Furniture, Frames or Other Decorative Objects

Jigsaw Can Be Used to Make Furniture, Frames or Other Decorative Objects

Thanks to a jigsaw’s ability to make detailed, complex shapes, jigsaws are great for making curved or circular furniture parts. For example, when redoing the flooring in your home, a jigsaw is perfect for cutting small pieces to fill in gaps.

They can also be used for cutting large holes in boards. You'll need to create a starter hole in the board with a tool like an electric drill first in order to fit the jigsaw blade in. Once you do, it's easy to cut in curves and create circular holes.

A jigsaw can also be used to make decorative patterns. If you're into making complex patterns or outlines on wood, you'll definitely want to have one.

How to Choose Jigsaws

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Jigsaws.

1

Ensure it is Easy to Handle and Makes Clean Lines

When we tested jigsaws with the same power supply type and voltage, we discovered that they weren't all the same in terms of ease of use and accuracy. In the next section, we'll explain what points to look out for and which models we recommend.

Jigsaws That Are Easy to Handle Cut Quickly and Prevent Slips

Jigsaws That Are Easy to Handle Cut Quickly and Prevent Slips

We graded each product on how well it could cut both curved lines and straight lines into ⅜ x 1 ½ inch plywood and 2x4 beams. After testing them all, we found that some shook hard enough to be a hindrance or weren't good for making small adjustments. Even for those with data given by the makers, we noticed a difference in their effectiveness and ease of use.

Jigsaws that were easy to handle maintained cutting speed while allowing for smooth changes in direction and ultimately saving time. The jigsaws that weren't as easy to control felt as if they moved of their own accord and cut in uneven patterns. We needed to slow down in order to get the finish we wanted and lost efficiency.

Since we didn't find a connection between a jigsaw's ease of use and the maker's official data on functions, voltage and stroke speed, consider using our guide to help you choose one that's easiest to manipulate.

Getting a Clean Cut Saves Time When Sanding

Getting a Clean Cut Saves Time When Sanding

Many people probably consider buying a jigsaw to make cuts of complex shapes, but not all of them are geared towards this type of job. During our tests, we also found a difference in the quality of the resulting surface from each jigsaw. Jagged surfaces take time to refinish, but if the surface comes out clean on the first try, you won't need to spend time sanding it down afterward.

These Two Jigsaws Were Easy to Use and Produced Excellent Results

These Two Jigsaws Were Easy to Use and Produced Excellent Results

Of the products we looked at, one that scored high for cutting along curves was Kobalt's 24 Volt MAX Variable Speed Jigsaw. It cut consistently along the scribe lines with little vibration. People who want to make picture frames or other delicate work should keep it in mind.

In terms of balancing power with performance, we liked DeWalt's 20V MAX XR Cordless Jig Saw. It stood out for its combination of cutting strength and ease of adjustment. Thanks to its ability to make large, rough cuts quickly as well as more fine-tuned cuts, we can recommend it to people who plan to use their jigsaw for a variety of tasks.

2

Battery-Powered Jigsaws Don't Limit You to One Workspace

Jigsaws can come with one of two power supply types: battery or corded. Battery-powered jigsaws have the advantage of being accessible in any workplace, while corded types can be used for long periods without a drop in power. Each type has its place depending on your workspace and what type of job you'll be using it for. Overall, we recommend battery-powered jigsaws.

Cut Through a Wide Range of Materials Without Getting Tangled up in Cords by Using a Battery-Powered Jigsaw

Cut Through a Wide Range of Materials Without Getting Tangled up in Cords by Using a Battery-Powered Jigsaw

Once we tested each jigsaw, we found that the cords didn't bother us if we were only cutting through wood one foot across, but when cutting through 1 ½ foot of plywood we found they became a hindrance. It's common to use a jigsaw for cutting through large pieces of wood, so we recommend one with a battery power supply for making it easier to change direction while cutting.

If you'll primarily be using your jigsaw for making indentations in beams or cutting grooves into floorboards, you may consider getting a corded one. The cutting movement is straightforward enough so that the cord won't be an issue.

3

Three Must-Have Features Will Make Your Work Stress-Free

One of the benefits of using a jigsaw is that it can handle a wide range of jobs. In the following section, we'll be looking at features that make a jigsaw easier to control and improve efficiency for cutting thick pieces of wood.

A Speed Control Dial Makes It Easy to Follow Scribe Lines

A Speed Control Dial Makes It Easy to Follow Scribe Lines

For jobs that require careful movements, it's best to have a feature to adjust cutting speed. This is particularly important for getting a clean cut along the scribe lines on the material you're working on. Speed control usually involves a dial on the jigsaw that allows you to adjust how quickly the blade moves up and down.

Being able to adjust the speed means you can find the setting that's most comfortable for you and cut along scribe lines better. Without any option to adjust the speed, the blade might cut more quickly than you expected and cause you to mess up the pattern you wanted to make. Having strong cutting power isn't helpful if it doesn't allow you to cut smooth curves or stay along the scribe lines, so be sure to choose a jigsaw that has a speed control dial.

You can also change how the cutting surface comes out by matching the cutting speed with the thickness of the material you're working on.

Ryusuke Kuranishi
Head of DIY Supplies at mybest
Ryusuke Kuranishi

For jigsaws that don't include a speed control dial, you should look for one that allows you to adjust the cutting speed with the trigger. Consider when a car needs to make a turn at a sharp curve; it's easier to turn wide if you release the gas beforehand. Jigsaws work similarly, in that you can cut along a curve more accurately by adjusting the cutting speed with the trigger at the right moment.

Save Your Strength With an Orbital Action Setting When Precision Isn't Necessary

Save Your Strength With an Orbital Action Setting When Precision Isn't Necessary

We recommend choosing a jigsaw with an orbital action feature if you're doing rough cuts that don't demand a clean finish. Normal jigsaws only cut up and down, but ones with an orbital action setting can also move the blade back and forth, allowing you to saw into wood. It can be helpful for speeding up a job. The downfall is that this causes the cutting surface to come out rough, and it's harder to make precision cuts.

You should consider using the orbital action setting when you need to cut down larger materials into pieces of similar sizes, or when you'll be polishing the material with a sander afterward. Some jigsaws even allow you to adjust the strength of the orbital motion so that you can prioritize grain, precision, or speed. If you have a big job on your hands and precision isn't an issue, an orbital action setting is extremely useful to lighten your labor.

Check Whether the Blade Can Be Changed Without Tools

Check Whether the Blade Can Be Changed Without Tools

You'll need to change the blade on a jigsaw depending on the type of material you're cutting. If you're concerned about complications, look into getting a jigsaw with one-touch blade changing. Jigsaws with one-touch blade changing allow you to attach or detach blades with the simple twist of a lever and require little time or effort. Jigsaws without this feature require additional tools to change blades, which takes extra time.

You should also remember that jigsaw blades need to be replaced. To maintain powerful, high-quality cutting, you'll need to buy new blades occasionally. Leaving the blade attached when you're not using one can also cause it to warp or degrade.

These Battery-Powered Jigsaws Include All of Our Must-Have Features

These Battery-Powered Jigsaws Include All of Our Must-Have Features

These three jigsaws have the three features you'll want most: a speed control dial, orbital action settings, and one-touch blade changing.

DeWalt's 20V MAX XR Cordless Jig Saw allows you to adjust cutting speed with a dial in addition to the trigger, making it a great choice for people who plan on cutting a variety of materials.

Kobalt and Milwaukee's jigsaws use the trigger to adjust cutting speed. Both of these makers sell a wide range of battery-powered jigsaws, and the batteries are usually compatible with their other products. If you already own cordless power tools by one of these makers, choosing a jigsaw by the same maker can make it easier to manage your batteries.

4

If You're Using It for Work, Choose a Jigsaw With All Three Vital Features

We've introduced some points to look out for when buying a jigsaw for beginner to intermediate power tool users. But people who plan on using one to make products they will go on to sell or need one for work will demand more advanced features. So in this section we'll introduce jigsaw features meant for pros.

Dust Blower Function Makes It Easy to Follow Long Scribe Lines

Dust Blower Function Makes It Easy to Follow Long Scribe Lines

Jigsaws with a dust blower function blow away the dust that results from cutting and make it easier to see the scribe lines on material. With a dust blower function, you won't need to constantly stop and remove dust so you can see where to cut, and can easily follow longer and more complex scribe lines. We highly recommend choosing a jigsaw with a dust blower function if you'll be taking on larger jobs that require several hours.

An LED Light Helps You See Scribe Lines In Any Lighting

An LED Light Helps You See Scribe Lines In Any Lighting

When cutting complex patterns with a jigsaw, sometimes you might have to move into a position that casts a shadow on the material you're working on and makes it hard to see the scribe lines. An LED light can light up the cutting surface.

Keep in mind that even if your jigsaw does have an LED light, you shouldn't work in a dark area for safety reasons. Make sure to keep your entire workspace well lit, regardless of whether you have an LED light.

Having a Lever to Change Angles Saves Time

Having a Lever to Change Angles Saves Time

Some jigsaws are able to adjust the angle for cutting at a 45-degree angle. Jigsaws that do allow for adjusting the angle do so by either including a lever for this purpose or requiring a hex key.

We recommend those that use a lever to adjust the angle, since they let you secure the jigsaw on a flat surface while making adjustments. Jigsaws that require a hex key involve turning a screw on the bottom side of the shoe to make adjustments. You'll need to support the weight of the jigsaw on your own while doing this, which is tiresome and takes more time.

Ryusuke Kuranishi
Head of DIY Supplies at mybest
Ryusuke Kuranishi

Regardless of whether they had levers or required a hex key, we found that most jigsaws weren't completely accurate in the angle displayed on them. Jigsaws aren't geared towards jobs that require cutting at precise angles, and we recommend using a circular saw for that instead.

mybest's Top Choice! Several Features, Tool-Free Blade Changing, and Stress-Free Cutting

DeWalt's 20V MAX XR Cordless Jig Saw is an offering by world-renowned power tool maker Black+Decker. It uses a battery for its power supply and weighs 6 pounds and 2 ounces with the 20V 5Ah battery inserted. This jigsaw received top scores in both cutting curves and straight lines, and on top of that, we felt it struck the right balance between cutting power and ease of use.

The acceleration can be adjusted with a dial or the trigger, which makes cutting smooth curves a breeze. If you approach the job patiently, you'll find this jigsaw produces fewer rough edges than most other products, which makes it useful for cuts on material or objects that are difficult to use a sander on. It also has an orbital action setting, allowing it to cut a 2x4 wood slab in a reasonable amount of time. Both blade changing and angle adjustment are handled with a lever and don't require any extra tools, which lessens the amount of time you need for preparation and cleanup.

The handle fits comfortably along the hand and rarely slips. It includes both an LED light and a dust blower so that you can easily follow both thick and thin scribe lines. The shoe was also thick enough to keep it steadily in place when set down. Even if you're a pro or advanced-level DIYer, this jigsaw can be used in a wide variety of situations.

Cuts Clean, Smooth Lines Efficiently, Even on Curves

Kobalt is an in-house brand from home supply chain Lowe's, and their 24-Volt Max Variable Speed Jigsaw weighs 6 pounds with the 24V 2Ah battery inserted. We had no trouble cutting either curved or straight lines with this jigsaw. Even when keeping a good pace, we were able to easily stay along the scribe lines, so it definitely lends itself to an efficient workflow. The vibration it produced wasn't a burden, and we felt it made for a comfortable cutting experience overall.

The only small downfall was that it doesn't have a speed control dial, so you'll need to cautiously adjust the power with the trigger depending on the type of material you're working with. The handle is on the thin side and doesn't grip as tightly as some of the other products we looked at, but it does include both an LED light and a dust blower, and it shouldn't cause much fatigue even after long sessions.

The shoe is noticeably hefty and keeps steady when placed on a surface. This jigsaw uses a lever to adjust the angle, and although the scale was pretty accurate when cutting at 90 degrees, changing it to a 45-degree angle resulted in about a two-degree difference in the actual angle of the cut surface. It's not the best choice if you need to cut materials at an angle frequently.

If you don't need to use it on a wide range of materials, the ease with which you can cut both straight and curved lines is nothing short of top class. In particular, if you need to cut curves into many pieces of similar material, we highly recommend this jigsaw.

Boasts Power to Cut Through Material of Any Thickness

Milwaukee, founded in Wisconsin, produces the M18 FUEL D-Handle Jig Saw, a battery-powered jigsaw weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces with the 18V 5Ah battery inserted. It made a good impression on us with how easy it was to cut through wood in a straight line. The cutting power was enough to cut through a 2x4 wood slab without a hitch. It did leave some noticeable bumps in the cutting surface, but considering it has an orbital action setting, its power to cut through wood pieces of all sizes is the main appeal.

The cutting speed can be adjusted with the amount of pressure applied to the trigger. On the other hand, the high acceleration makes it difficult to cut along scribe lines to make curves precisely. It does include both an LED light and dust blower, but it isn't really intended for long jobs requiring patience and precision to begin with. Changing blades and adjusting the cutting angle are both handled with levers and don't require any tools, meaning there's little effort needed for preparation or cleanup.

As for accuracy of the angle values shown on the scale, both the factory setting of 90 degrees and the 45 degree mark were off by about one degree, so it might not be precise enough for some people. We noticed that even though it's cordless, it's heavier than we expected. The trigger and trigger guard are also on the large side, which might not fit with every person's hands. While cutting some materials caused it to vibrate strongly, it will likely cause fatigue in your arm after prolonged use.

Delivers on Both Cut Quality and Accuracy, Just Be Sure You Have a Place to Plug It In

The 7.0 Amp Top-Handle Jig Saw is by German maker Bosch. It's a corded type with a 12-foot-4-inch cord and weighs 5 pounds, 10 ounces. When we used it to cut wood, we found it worked well for both curved and straight lines, and was easy to keep along the scribe lines. The acceleration can be adjusted with either the trigger or speed control dial, and it includes an orbital action setting. Even with the power turned up, we had no trouble keeping it along the scribe lines, and we didn't notice many jagged edges on the cutting surface.

While it doesn't have an LED light, it does come with a dust blower. You might feel inconvenienced depending on the time of day, but as long as you're working in a well-lit room, you shouldn't feel any stress, and you won't need to brush dust off the scribe lines. But since this is a corded model, you'll need to make sure you have the necessary facilities, and there's a chance the cord could be a problem if you're cutting large pieces of wood.

This jigsaw requires a hex key in order to adjust the angle, which does take some time, but the numbers shown on the scale are surprisingly accurate. It can be adjusted to angles of 0, 15, 22.5, 30, and 45 degrees. The 22.5-degree angle in particular is an uncommon setting, so it could be quite helpful to people who frequently need to cut at precise angles.

Thankfully, it doesn't require any tools to change blades. The shoe is sufficiently weighty, and it felt steady when we put it down. It offers good leverage on the material while cutting, so as long as you don't need to make long cuts where the cord could become an issue, this is an excellent jigsaw that's easy to use.

Combines Power and Comfortable Handling for Use With Many Types of Material

The 18V One+ Orbital Jig Saw by Japanese tool maker Ryobi uses an 18V 4Ah battery for its power supply and weighs 5 pounds, 14 ounces with the battery inserted. While cutting wood, we found that the power was more than sufficient for cutting through a 2x4 wood slab, but it also shook noticeably. It includes a speed control dial and an orbital action setting for compatibility with materials of all types and thickness. This jigsaw uses the speed control dial as a replacement for the ability to adjust cutting speed with the trigger.

It comes with an LED light but no dust blower, so it would be difficult to follow scribe lines when cutting complex shapes due to the leftover dust. Blade changing is handled with a one-touch mechanism and doesn't require any extra tools. You'll need a hex key to adjust the cutting angle, but thankfully we found that both the 90-degree and 45-degree marks on the scale were more or less accurate compared to the resulting angle cut on the material.

The weight with the battery inserted felt just right and made it easy to manipulate. The material on the handle makes it easy to hold in place, and the handle itself is comfortably thick. The shoe isn't particularly sturdy, but the jigsaw itself weighs enough such that we didn't feel it was unstable when we set it down.

Leaves a Smooth Cutting Surface but Lacks Features Needed for Long Jobs

Japanese manufacturer Makita makes the Top Handle Jig Saw, a corded model with a 7 foot, 10 inch long cord and total weight of 5 pounds, 10 ounces. Our tests showed this jigsaw could produce top class cutting power, as it was easy to hold along the scribe lines and left behind few jagged edges. Although it didn't cut as quickly as some of the other jigsaws we looked at, it was sufficiently easy to maneuver when cutting both curved and straight lines. The cutting speed can be adjusted with either a dial or the trigger, and it also includes an orbital action setting, so you can turn up the power if you need to.

We felt the weight was just right to hold comfortably, and the shoe was sturdy enough to keep it balanced when set down. However, it doesn’t come with several recommended features. Despite being a corded jigsaw, there is no LED light or dust blower, so it wouldn't be most people's first choice for cutting larger pieces of material. Adjusting the cutting angle requires a hex key, and on top of that, there aren't grooves to lock it in place at individual angle settings, only lines on the scale, so it would be tedious to use for cuts at precise angles.

Tends to Leave a Rough Cutting Surface, but Helpful for Quickly Getting Through Large Jobs

Hart is one of several brands belonging to multinational power tool distributer TTI, whose holdings also include Milwaukee and Ryobi. Their 20V Orbital Jigsaw is available exclusively on Walmart's online store. It's a battery-powered jigsaw and weighs 5 pounds, 2 ounces with the 20V 1.5A battery inserted. While cutting into wood, it displayed commendable cutting power, but often resulted in a rough cutting surface and produced a noticeable amount of vibration. It wouldn't work well for cutting along complex scribe lines.

The cutting speed can't be adjusted with the trigger, so you need to set the speed control dial and orbital action switch to the settings you want before getting started. The speed dial doesn't have predetermined increments, making it flexible enough to work with a wide range of materials. It's reasonably lightweight and doesn't weigh your arm down, but the shoe is rather thin, and it didn't feel steady when we set it down. The handle is shaped to fit in your hand and has a textured surface to improve grip, which makes it easy to control.

The cutting angle can be adjusted along a scale using the included hex key. The values shown on the scale were also accurate and allowed for cutting at precise angles. But because it produced so much vibration, it tended to jerk while cutting, so most people will need to sand down the cutting surface afterward.

Easy to Maneuver, but Falls Short on Finish Quality and Accuracy

This 20V cordless jigsaw is by Porter-Cable, a subsidiary of tool maker Black+Decker, and weighs 5 pounds, 2 ounces with the 20V 1.5Ah battery inserted. We couldn't help but notice the substantial vibration produced by this jigsaw while cutting into wood. It tends to jerk around when trying to get the blade into the material you're working on, and often results in a rough cutting surface. It doesn't have a speed control dial, but at least there's an orbital action setting. Due to the need to adjust the cutting speed carefully with the trigger and with no way to set it beforehand, it isn't geared toward beginners.

We felt that the material on the handle made for a steady grip, and the trigger made controlling the cutting speed intuitive. You need to hold down the safety button while cutting in order to prevent accidents, but it's easily reachable, so we didn't feel it added any stress to the task. Its light weight means it shouldn't cause any fatigue in your arms. This jigsaw comes with a hex key to adjust the cutting angle, but it can only be set to plus or minus 45 degrees, and we found a slight discrepancy between the angle shown on the scale and the resulting angle cut into the material. It's equipped with a dust blower but no LED light, so it isn't best used on jobs requiring precise angles or complex patterns.

Doesn't Excel in Ease of Use or Speed, but Leaves a Clean Cutting Surface

CRAFTSMAN is a subsidiary of Black+Decker who makes gardening equipment and other tools. Their Electric Variable Speed Jig Saw uses a cord for its power supply and weighs 5 pounds not including the cord, which is 6 feet and 8 inches long. When we tried cutting wood, we found the amount of vibration it produced put a burden on our arms, so it wouldn't be ideal to use for extended periods. It doesn't cut at a very quick pace, either, and large pieces of wood or jobs requiring multiple cuts would require a significant chunk of time. On the other hand, thanks to the slow cutting speed, it produces smooth surfaces with few jagged edges.

One notable feature on this jigsaw is that the speed control dial is located on the trigger. It's not sensitive enough that you would be likely to change it accidentally, but the dial itself is small and not particularly easy to adjust. You can also change the cutting speed by adjusting the amount of pressure applied to the trigger, and it has an orbital action setting, so there's no lack of power options. It can be used to cut many different types of material or intricate lines.

In addition to being lightweight, the shoe is quite thin, and we didn't feel it held steadily onto the material we were cutting when set down. Coupled with the cord, it's not a top contender in the ease of use category. The cutting angle can be adjusted with the included hex key, but is limited to plus or minus 45 degrees, and we found some discrepancy between the actual angle cut into the material. It doesn't come with an LED light or dust blower, and the thin shoe is susceptible to warping.

Vibrates Too Strongly to Be Used for Long Periods and Falls Short on Maneuverability

The Smart Select 5.0-Amp is an affordably priced jigsaw by world-famous power tool maker Black+Decker. It's a corded model that weighs 4 pounds, 9 ounces when measured without the six-foot cord. When we used it to cut wood, we discovered it was difficult to consistently follow the scribe lines due to unnecessary vibration. It was also noticeable in our hands, and we didn't feel it would be comfortable to use for long periods.

The cutting speed is sufficiently fast, but you'll likely need to make some adjustments or use a sander afterward. Cutting speed can be controlled with the trigger on this jigsaw. It employs the maker's original "CurveControl Technology," which puts orbital action and speed control on the same dial. The dial can be set to one of four settings, so it isn't needlessly complicated to get the cutting speed you want.

One good thing is that it doesn't require any tools to change blades. The values shown on the scale when changing the cutting angle are also accurate and didn't create errors in the material. But keep in mind you'll need to have your own screwdriver on hand to adjust the angle. The shoe is thin and doesn't always remain stable, giving us the impression that it lacks durability. You'll need to be extra cautious if you want to keep it in good running condition. It doesn't come with an LED light or a dust blower. The light weight of the unit and thin shoe result in a lack of stability when it's set down, and we felt it was difficult to hold steadily on the material while cutting. The cord also has a tendency to inhibit maneuverability.

How We Tested the Jigsaws

Jigsaws Evaluation
We purchased 10 bestselling jigsaws on websites like Amazon and Walmart and put them through rigorous testing to find out which one gets our highest recommendation. At mybest, we define quality jigsaws as those that are able to cut both straight and curved lines accurately, are easy to care for, make clean, precise cuts, and are easy to manipulate. In order to give fair scores, we tested each of the products without using any included options.

We evaluated each jigsaw based on the following five criteria:

  • Ease of cutting curves
  • Ease of cutting straight lines
  • Included accessories and functions
  • Accuracy
  • Ease of use

Ease of Cutting Curves

Ease of Cutting Curves
Since being able to cut along curves is one of its biggest advantages, you'll definitely want to know how well a jigsaw can handle cutting a curved line before buying it. For this test, we cut a light curve into a piece of ⅜ x 1 ½ plywood, using scribe lines, and asked five testers to score the following four factors.

  • Was it easy to follow the scribe line?
  • How long did it take to finish cutting?
  • Is the handle easy to grip?
  • Did it vibrate?

We made sure each jigsaw was equipped with the same blade.

  • TPI: Eight teeth per inch
  • Material: Carbon steel
  • Maximum cut depth: Two inches
2

Ease of Cutting Straight Lines

Ease of Cutting Straight Lines
The cutting power of a jigsaw is hard to judge just by looking at how many strokes per minute it cuts at. So we asked five testers to try cutting a straight line through a 2x4 wood slab and assess the following three points.

  • Can it follow scribe lines?
  • Does it cut sufficiently fast?
  • Did it vibrate?

We used the same blade as in the first test.

3

Included Accessories and Functions

Included Accessories and Functions
When you're buying a jigsaw for the first time, you'll probably want one that comes with all the accessories needed for successful woodworking. Having features that make preparation and cleanup easy is an added convenience.

  • Does it come with its own storage case?
  • Does it come with blades? Those that included two or more blades or different types of blades were given extra points.
  • Is it compatible with one-touch blade changing?
  • Does it have a dust nozzle for quick installation of a dust collector or dust blower?
  • Does it require tools to adjust the cutting angle?
4

Accuracy

Accuracy
One appeal of jigsaws is that they allow for cutting at an angle. In this test, we checked whether the angle cut into the material was the same as the number shown on the scale shown on the jigsaw. Because defects in the shoe can affect precision, we also looked at the durability of each jigsaw's shoe.

  • Accuracy at zero degrees: Used at its factory setting, how accurate is it when cutting a 90-degree angle?
  • Accuracy at 45 degrees: How close is the cut to a true 45-degree angle when adjusted to the 45-degree mark on the jigsaw's ruler?
  • Shoe material and coating: Is the shoe made from aluminum or another metal which is resistant to warping to prevent damage from shocks? Has it been coated to improve usability?
  • Shoe reinforcement: Has the shoe been reinforced to withstand stress and improve durability?
5

Ease of Use

Ease of Use
It's extremely helpful when a jigsaw comes with features that make it easier to handle and manipulate. So we awarded points to each one based on whether it had features for improving cutting accuracy and safety.

  • Is it cordless? If not, is the cord long enough?
  • We think the ideal weight is about 5 ½ to 6 ½pounds, which is heavy enough to be secure when put down but still light enough to hold easily. Does it fall in that range?
  • Is there a way to adjust the cutting speed for use with different materials?
  • Can you adjust the cutting speed by changing the amount of pressure applied to the trigger?
  • Does it include an LED light to illuminate the cutting area?
  • Does it have an orbital action setting to help cut through thicker material?
  • Does it have a dust blower function to make it easier to see scribe lines?

How Should You Choose a Blade?

There are many types of jigsaw blades for cutting different types of materials. In this section, we'll show you how to choose the right blade for the right job.

Make Sure It's Compatible With Your Jigsaw

Make Sure It's Compatible With Your Jigsaw

When buying a blade for your jigsaw, be sure to read the manual first and check which types it's compatible with. Jigsaw blades generally attach using either a T-shank or a U-shank. You can't attach a T-shank style blade to a jigsaw that only accepts U-shank style blades, so be sure to check the manual before buying.

Choose the Right Blade for the Type of Material You'll Be Cutting

Choose the Right Blade for the Type of Material You'll Be Cutting

Once you know how the blade will attach to your jigsaw, look for one that works well with the type of material you plan on using it for. Jigsaws are convenient tools in that they can cut through many different types of material, but you can't do so with just one blade. You'll need to choose the right type of blade to match the type of material you want to cut.

Choosing a blade that's well-matched to the material you're cutting will improve the quality of the cut and speed it up. There are blades that are specifically meant for cutting either wood or metal, so choose one appropriately.
