How We Tested the Products

We gathered the 9 bestselling Monitors and put them through rigorous testing.
  1. Color Accuracy

    1
    Color Accuracy

Color accuracy is essential when using a monitor. Images can feel unnatural and cause a sense of discomfort if the colors are displayed differently than they should be, such as animals or plants with a red hue or an overly blue sky. We measured whether each monitor could accurately display colors in line with the sRGB (gamma 2.2) standard color range. We rated monitors based on the calculated dE, a quantitative indicator of perceived color differences. Using a dE value of 1.0 as the upper limit, monitors with a smaller value for difference in color were rated more highly.Equipment for testing:PC used: Sony Vaio VJS12590111BColor analyzer: Konica Minolta CA-P427Pattern Generator: Portrait Displays VideoForge ProSoftware: Portrait Displays Calman 2022Test location:In a room with direct sunlight blocked, with an external light-blocking hood secured to the measurement probeTest MethodologySDR Toolkit: Calman ColorcheckerColorspace Target: sRGB, Gamma Formula: Power 2.2, Luminance Levels: PC (0-255)Pattern Generator settings: 1080p, HDR off, Color Format: RGB Full 80bitPerform factory reset, turn off Eco mode, change color settings to sRGBIf sRGB is not available, set monitor to default or standard before measuringResults of this measurement are for a single point near the center of the monitor screen and taken from the front.Due to variations in shipped products and irregularities in screen color and brightness, the above values are not absolute and limited in their use.

  2. Color Gamut Range

    2
    Color Gamut Range

Color gamut indicates the range of colors that your monitor is capable of displaying. A color gamut that's narrower than the standard of sRGB for computers will lead to an image with reduced vibrancy, or cause colors to appear distorted due to a monitor's inability to properly display subtle color differences. In addition, watching videos on a display with an expansive color gamut tends to make colors appear more radiant and beautiful. You should also keep in mind that a monitor with a color gamut higher than the standard may cause colors to appear overly vivid and exaggerated. If faithful color reproduction is important to you, it may be better to put stronger consideration towards monitors that scored higher during color accuracy testing. We used the ultra-wide BT.2020 color gamut, which closely resembles real-world colors, as the standard to measure how well each monitor can display this range of colors. Using an upper limit of 80 percent coverage, monitors with a wider color gamut coverage received higher ratings.Equipment for testing:PC used: Sony Vaio VJS12590111BColor analyzer: Konica Minolta CA-P427Pattern Generator: Portrait Displays VideoForge ProSoftware: Portrait Displays Calman 2022Test location:In a room with direct sunlight blocked, with an external light-blocking hood secured to the measurement probeTest MethodologyHDR Toolkit: HDR BT.2020, Gamut Coverage: BT.2020 Percent 1976 measuring UV chroma component valuesColorspace Target: BT.2020 HDR, Gamma Formula: ST 2084 HDR (PQ), Luminance Levels: PC (0-255)Perform factory reset, turn off Eco modeResults of this measurement are for a single point near the center of the monitor screen and taken from the front.Due to variations in shipped products and irregularities in screen color and brightness, the above values are not absolute and limited in their use.

  3. Contrast Ratio

    3
    Contrast Ratio

A high contrast ratio is important if you'll be viewing and working with images on your monitor. Image clarity is elevated and can provide a more realistic and lively view when there is a clear distinction between a dark sky and bright stars as you view a nightscape image. Each monitor displayed an ANSI Checker 4x4 pattern that shows a mixture of both black and white on the same screen. The ratio of black to white luminance was calculated and used for scoring. Using a 2500:1 contrast ratio as the upper limit, monitors with high ratios received higher ratings.Equipment for testing:PC used: Sony Vaio VJS12590111BColor analyzer: Konica Minolta CA-P427Pattern Generator: Portrait Displays VideoForge ProSoftware: Portrait Displays Calman 2022Test location:In a room with direct sunlight blocked, with an external light-blocking hood secured to the measurement probeTest MethodologyEach monitor displayed an ANSI Checker 4x4 pattern that shows a mixture of both black and white on the same screen. 4. Interface Compatibility

    4
    Interface Compatibility

Even if your monitor has a crystal clear display, a lack of user-friendliness can lead to minor frustrations piling up. We checked each monitor to see if it provides a diverse interface compatibility by offering a variety of ports to connect to. We considered monitors to have sufficient user-friendliness if they feature a single USB Type-C port, along with a variety of other connection types, and are designed with these ports on the side rather than the bottom. We gave each monitor a recommended score based on the points listed below.Number of HDMI portsNumber of USB Type-A portsNumber of Type-C portsType-C capability to charge devices or output videoNumber of Display PortsNumber of VGA portsNumber of AUX portsPresence of other types of input connectionsAre the ports located on the side of the monitor?

  5. Ease of Position Adjustment

    5
    Ease of Position Adjustment

It's crucial for your monitor stand to be easily adjustable in order to use it comfortably in combination with your desk setup. We considered monitors capable of height and angle adjustment, along with having VESA mount compatibility, as satisfactory. We gave each monitor a recommended score based on the points listed below.Compatibility with VESA mountsAbility to adjust heightExtra points if height adjustment allows a position above a laptop's displayAbility to adjust vertical angle positionAbility to adjust horizontal angle positionAbility to pivot the screen between portrait and landscape mode

Should You Choose a Gaming or Regular Monitor?

When you start looking up monitors, the search results will likely include a number of gaming monitors. These types of monitors will typically list specifications like 240-hertz support or one-millisecond response times, which might lead you to believe they are the better option for office work. In fact, there's little need for you to pick a gaming monitor if you won't be using it for gaming. Monitors optimized for work, rather than gaming, are actually the better choice.

Gaming Monitors Are Over-the-Top for Work

Gaming Monitors Are Over-the-Top for Work

PC monitors typically fall in the cheaper price range of $100 to $300. While they can offer adequate performance for gaming, PC monitors are mostly known for having a balanced display performance

Gaming monitors also fall within a high price range of $200 to $500. They tend to have slightly lower display performance, but excel in elevating your gaming experience to play at your best. If you play games like first-person shooters, where specs like refresh rate and response time are crucial, gaming monitors will be your best choice. Otherwise, regular monitors are the way to go for most people.

Syuri Taguchi

Oftentimes, the higher the price of a gaming monitor, the better the display performance it'll have. If you have room in your budget and also enjoy gaming, a gaming monitor that also doubles as a work monitor is another option.

How to Choose a Monitor - Buying Guide

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Monitors.

1

For Work, Choose a Large Monitor to Display the Most Information

If you need a monitor to work, an important consideration is how much information can be displayed at one time. To display the largest amount of information, you'll need a monitor with a large screen and high resolution. However, simply picking out the largest and highest resolution monitor doesn't always equate to the best approach. You can still end up with something beyond what you need. From here, we'll go over the specs that make a monitor just right for work.

A 27-Inch Screen Size Is Just Right

A 27-Inch Screen Size Is Just Right

A 27-inch monitor is the perfect size to use for work. This screen size makes it easy to view both screens simultaneously when used as a split-screen, and can greatly increase your productivity.

A 24-inch screen decreases the amount of information you can display, and extended displays at this size won't be easy to work with. Attempting to increase the number of open windows on this screen size will cause your font size to become incredibly small.

A 32-inch screen may be able to display even more information to provide the same boost in productivity. However, a screen this large may feel imposing to have on your desk.

We Recommend a WQHD Screen Resolution

We Recommend a WQHD Screen Resolution

Resolution should be your second consideration after screen size. A higher resolution means more pixels embedded in your monitor, allowing you to see finer details and a wider area of display. Full high definition is typically the standard for monitors, but going one grade higher to WQHD increases the number of pixels by about 1.8 times.

You'll be able to utilize an additional 1.8 times the display area by shrinking the size of your task bar and displaying previously hidden windows that didn't have enough room to be seen. In addition, a higher pixel count will also provide a sharper image to better display lines and text. This increased visibility can also help to better your work efficiency. You might find it hard to go back to full HD monitors.

2

Make Display Performance a Priority for Photo and Video Editing

Make Display Performance a Priority for Photo and Video Editing

Display performance matters if you work in video or image editing. Display performance isn't something you can understand by reading product specifications. Therefore, we brought in specialized equipment used in product development and quality control to test this factor. We used this equipment to measure the color accuracy, color gamut, and contrast ratio of each monitor. Because it gets pretty technical, we converted these measurements to a graded score for display performance. Details explaining each of these components will be listed below.

High Color Accuracy Will Ensure True Color Representation

High Color Accuracy Will Ensure True Color Representation

We tested for color accuracy using the sRGB color space monitor standard and measured the Delta E (dE) value, which indicates to what degree color shades are being incorrectly shown. If your monitor is unable to depict colors accurately, you might produce work containing a color scheme different from what you originally intended.

If your monitor is capable of displaying the standard color shades, the colors you see while working will match what others may see on a different, high-precision display. You'll be able to accurately convey the shades of color and levels of brightness seen at the time of production.

Even if you are a "casual observer," someone looking at your work may be a "careful observer." Be sure to reference a standard when calibrating your work to portray color and brightness in your work accurately.

A Wide Color Gamut Can Show Subtle Differences in Color

A Wide Color Gamut Can Show Subtle Differences in Color

We tested color gamut range using the ultra-wide BT.2020 color gamut, which is nearly identical to the visible color spectrum, as the ideal. We tested each monitor to see how closely they measure up to this ultra-wide range of color.

It should be noted that no monitors of any type available can perfectly reproduce BT.2020. For a computer monitor, reproducing about 70% is plenty.

A display with a limited color gamut will be unable to display finer color gradations, which results in flat images with no depth. A wide color gamut will make an image of the sky or ocean feel like it has more depth. It'll be easier to even feel a sense of time or weather through images and videos. A wide color gamut is essential if you want to enjoy HDR content.

A High Contrast Ratio Can Display Shades Clearly

A High Contrast Ratio Can Display Shades Clearly

We tested contrast ratio by displaying a mixture of white and black colors on the same screen. The brightness of each color was measured to calculate a ratio between the two. A low contrast ratio will cause shadows to blend into the image of a night scene, compromising the view by making the differences in shades unnoticeable.

A high contrast ratio will display the darkness of the night sky and brightness of stars distinctly, increasing the image's impact and leading to a more realistic and balanced view.

We Found the Highest Display Performance in LG and Benq Monitors

LG's 27GL83A-B Ultra Gear had the highest overall display performance among all tested monitors. It features extremely accurate colors and a wide color gamut. Even with a modest contrast ratio, all in all, this monitor has a high performance that's suitable for both entertainment and work.

The second-highest display performance was found in Benq's EX2780Q Mobiuz gaming monitor. It features high level performance in all three areas, which makes it a versatile monitor suitable for a variety of applications.

3

Choose Monitors With Multiple Interface Compatibility to Keep Everything Connected

Choose Monitors With Multiple Interface Compatibility to Keep Everything Connected

There are no demerits to having multiple input options in your monitor. While it might be ideal for a monitor to support the latest USB standard like Type-C, none of the best-selling monitors we tested in this buying guide come with Type-C compatibility. If you'd like a little more added convenience, we recommend monitors with two or more HDMI ports. This allows you to keep both your computer and gaming consoles connected at the same time.

If your monitor has only one HDMI port, you'll have to swap cable connections with your computer or gaming console every time you want to switch devices. That, or you'll have to increase the number of display ports using a hub.

4

Choose Monitors That Are Easily Adjustable

You may often find yourself adjusting your posture, or you may end up changing your monitor's positioning often. If your monitor comes with a multifunctional stand, it'll provide you with better usability.

Multifunctional Stands Make Repositioning Easy

Multifunctional Stands Make Repositioning Easy

Multifunctional stands usually come with the ability to adjust height and tilt, which allows you to easily position your screen in any direction. Height adjustment lets you position your monitor at a height that won't obstruct your laptop screen. If your monitor stand doesn't allow height adjustment, you may end up spending more to purchase a separate monitor riser.

Angled adjustment is best when you can change both the horizontal and vertical angle of your monitor. Vertical, or tilt, adjustments are useful to change your viewing angle when working in a reclined or forward-bending position. Horizontal, or pan, adjustments allow you to have more flexibility when you decide to rearrange your desk setup.

Acer and LG Offer Monitors With User-Friendly Stands

Acer's Nitro FreeSync XF243Y Pbmiiprx gaming monitor includes a multifunctional stand. It's capable of height, tilt, and pan adjustment, and even supports 90-degree pivot rotation to display your monitor in portrait mode. This monitor provides you with hassle-free adjustments in any direction.

LG's 27GL83A-B Ultra Gear gaming monitor includes an adequately functional stand with height and tilt adjustment. The included stand will fulfill most needs for a satisfying user experience, without having to resort to using a monitor arm.

Well-Balanced Performance With a High-Level Display

This is a 27-inch WQHD gaming monitor from BenQ, a display manufacturer based in Taiwan with a large footprint in the gaming monitor market. It boasts high color accuracy with an approximate Delta E value of 1.6. This level of high precision will excel in settings where good color reproducibility, such as graphic design, is desirable.

Furthermore, this monitor has about 67.7 percent of the BT.2020 color gamut, allowing you to implement vivid and realistic colors into your creative projects. This monitor will display images with differences in dark shades shown in detail, since the contrast ratio measured around 889:1. It'll be easy to verify fine details or correct color gradients if you use this display for design.

The monitor stand has both height and tilt adjustment, allowing a more comfortable workspace. Two HDMI ports, one display port, and an auxiliary port will also facilitate seamless transitions between your devices. A Display Made for Gaming With an Especially User-Friendly Stand

This is Taiwanese PC manufacturer Acer's Nitro series gaming monitor with FreeSync compatibility. It has a 24-inch full high definition display with a 165-hertz refresh rate and 0.5 millisecond response time to deliver high gaming performance. Color accuracy testing found that this monitor has somewhat lower precision, with an approximate Delta E value of 4.8. This may have a minor impact if you work in design, where color reproducibility is essential.

On the other hand, it has a vibrantly colorful display that is capable of generating about 75.4 percent of the BT.2020 color gamut. It has a measured contrast ratio of approximately 280:1, which we believe is adequate. It's unlikely that displayed images will appear unseemly, but this monitor may feel somewhat lacking when viewing shadow differences.

You'll be able to adjust the height, tilt, and pan of this monitor stand, providing you with a prime working environment. It's equipped with two HDMI ports, a display port, and auxiliary port. This monitor may not be suitable for working on graphic design due to lower color accuracy, but its wide color gamut and vibrant display make it great for basic work tasks and entertainment purposes.

A Wide Color Gamut and High Color Accuracy, but Contrast Ratio Is Low

The 24B2XH gaming monitor is by AOC, one of the world's top display manufacturers. This monitor has a 24-inch full high definition display with a 75-hertz refresh rate and eight millisecond response time. Color accuracy is moderately high, with a Delta E value around 2.7. It covers approximately 73.0 percent of the BT.2020 color gamut, displaying a vibrant array of colors. It measured around 171:1 for contrast ratio, which may be on the lower end, but this monitor can still perform well when used for creative projects.

The monitor stand can be adjusted for tilt, but lacks height and pan adjustment. You may end up needing a monitor riser or monitor arm when using this display. It has interface compatibility to support HDMI, VGA, and auxiliary input. This monitor is suitable for anyone looking for a budget-friendly, high-quality display. While it won't provide a dramatic productivity boost, since it's only a 24-inch full high definition display, this monitor is still a great choice as your first monitor.

Colors Are Extremely Accurate, While Color Gamut and Contrast Ratio Remain Decent

This monitor is made by Dell Technologies, a US-based computer hardware and software manufacturer. Dell is a well-established manufacturer known for making computers for business purposes, as well as reliable product quality in the monitor industry. This is a 27-inch full high definition monitor with a high display performance. It offers high precision in terms of color accuracy, with a Delta E value of around 1.2, making it quite reliable for design work. Its color gamut covers about 59.0 percent of the BT.2020 range, which may feel a bit unsatisfactory. It measured an approximate 360:1 contrast ratio, which meets the necessary performance requirements.

The monitor stand is only capable of vertical angle adjustment, and lacks support for height or pan adjustment. It has interface compatibility for HDMI and VGA, which isn't very high in terms of convenience. This may not be an issue if you're okay with minimal interface options. This monitor is appealing for its good color accuracy, making it a suitable choice for work purposes, including design. The 27-inch display should give you a good productivity boost. Because it's a bit lacking in convenience, you should consider pairing this monitor with a monitor riser or external hub if necessary.

Substantial Interface Compatibility and Good Color Accuracy

This monitor is made by ViewSonic, a well-established US display manufacturer founded in 1987. This is the brand's flagship model with a 27-inch full high definition display. It displays a high level of color accuracy with an approximate 2.3 Delta E value, ensuring that there will be little negative impact if you do design work. But it's limited to 58.7 percent of the BT.2020 color gamut range, and with an approximate 213:1 contrast ratio, this monitor may lack the ability to express color gradients and dark shade differences well.

You'll only be able to adjust the vertical angle of this monitor, so consider using a monitor riser for more height options. It features an interface compatibility with a wide range of devices, since this monitor has one HDMI port, Display port, VGA port, and an auxiliary jack. This model may have good color accuracy, but it performs moderately in all other areas. You may feel somewhat unsatisfied using this monitor to watch videos or play games. This monitor is still a viable option for anyone who wants to improve their work efficiency with a 27-inch display that won't break the bank.

Not Necessarily High-Spec, but a Well-Balanced Display Performance

This is the Asus Eye Care Monitor with a 27-inch full high definition display made by Taiwanese PC Manufacturer AsusTeK Computer. It's equipped with features to help protect your eyes. AsusTeK, founded in 1989, is a global company known for high-quality PC parts. With a color accuracy of 3.8 Delta E, it doesn't have the high performance needed for design work. It displays around 64.7 percent of the BT.2020 color gamut range, and it has a contrast ratio measured at approximately 220:1. Both aspects are not necessarily low, showing that this monitor offers a balanced, mid-tier performance.

This monitor stand only allows tilt adjustment, so a monitor arm is recommended for a wider range of angle adjustments. It's equipped with an interface comparability for an HDMI, a VGA, and even a DVI connection. This inclusion of a DVI port makes it easy to connect to older connection types with outdated computers. This monitor delivers a mid-range display performance, while also featuring a unique input option. If you're seeking a monitor for both work and entertainment, the affordability and balanced performance of this option should be appealing.

A High Contrast Ratio, Although Overall Performance Is on the Lower End

This is a 24-inch LED monitor with full high definition by Sceptre, a display manufacturer in the US. This is the flagship product by the same company known for cost-effective products. It has a color accuracy measured around 5.0 Delta E, which is on the lower side, and a color gamut with coverage for about 55.1 percent of the BT.2020 range. While it may not be reliable for design work, the approximate 577:1 contrast ratio will make differences in shadows noticeable.

The monitor stand is only capable of tilt adjustment, and the monitor itself includes two HDMI ports, a VGA port, and an audio port. Although it only has adequate usability, you'll be able to keep multiple devices connected to this monitor at the same time. This monitor may not have the ideal display performance needed for design work, but it will still be suitable for general use. This model has potential for those looking for a budget-friendly display.

A Passable Color Gamut Range, Although Overall Performance Is Low

This is the Koorui computer monitor with a full high definition 24-inch screen by HKC, a Chinese display manufacturer known for producing budget-friendly monitors. The display has a considerably low color accuracy, with a Delta E value around 5.9. This level of performance may affect the quality of your design work or cause videos to appear abnormal. It has a moderate color gamut range that encompasses about 58.8 percent of the BT.2020 color gamut. The contrast ratio was measured around 97:1, which may cause shadows to have a completely black appearance due to poor shading performance.

It has the bare minimum in terms of usability, since the stand only features tilt adjustment, while the monitor only has ports for an HDMI and a VGA connection. Overall, this model offers a lower display performance and poor user-friendliness. If cost is your only concern, this monitor may be a viable option, but we still recommend keeping in mind the disadvantages associated with low display performance.

Color Accuracy

Color Accuracy

Color accuracy is essential when using a monitor. Images can feel unnatural and cause a sense of discomfort if the colors are displayed differently than they should be, such as animals or plants with a red hue or an overly blue sky. We measured whether each monitor could accurately display colors in line with the sRGB (gamma 2.2) standard color range. We rated monitors based on the calculated dE, a quantitative indicator of perceived color differences. Using a dE value of 1.0 as the upper limit, monitors with a smaller value for difference in color were rated more highly.

Equipment for testing:

  • PC used: Sony Vaio VJS12590111B
  • Color analyzer: Konica Minolta CA-P427
  • Pattern Generator: Portrait Displays VideoForge Pro
  • Software: Portrait Displays Calman 2022

Test location:

  • In a room with direct sunlight blocked, with an external light-blocking hood secured to the measurement probe

Test Methodology
SDR Toolkit: Calman Colorchecker
Colorspace Target: sRGB, Gamma Formula: Power 2.2, Luminance Levels: PC (0-255)
Pattern Generator settings: 1080p, HDR off, Color Format: RGB Full 80bit
Perform factory reset, turn off Eco mode, change color settings to sRGB
If sRGB is not available, set monitor to default or standard before measuring
Results of this measurement are for a single point near the center of the monitor screen and taken from the front.

Due to variations in shipped products and irregularities in screen color and brightness, the above values are not absolute and limited in their use.

Color Gamut Range

Using an upper limit of 80 percent coverage, monitors with a wider color gamut coverage received higher ratings.

Equipment for testing:

Contrast Ratio

Contrast Ratio
A high contrast ratio is important if you'll be viewing and working with images on your monitor. Image clarity is elevated and can provide a more realistic and lively view when there is a clear distinction between a dark sky and bright stars as you view a nightscape image. Each monitor displayed an ANSI Checker 4x4 pattern that shows a mixture of both black and white on the same screen. The ratio of black to white luminance was calculated and used for scoring. Using a 2500:1 contrast ratio as the upper limit, monitors with high ratios received higher ratings.

Interface Compatibility

Interface Compatibility
Even if your monitor has a crystal clear display, a lack of user-friendliness can lead to minor frustrations piling up. We checked each monitor to see if it provides a diverse interface compatibility by offering a variety of ports to connect to. We considered monitors to have sufficient user-friendliness if they feature a single USB Type-C port, along with a variety of other connection types, and are designed with these ports on the side rather than the bottom.

We gave each monitor a recommended score based on the points listed below.

  • Number of HDMI ports
  • Number of USB Type-A ports
  • Number of Type-C ports
  • Type-C capability to charge devices or output video
  • Number of Display Ports
  • Number of VGA ports
  • Number of AUX ports
  • Presence of other types of input connections
  • Are the ports located on the side of the monitor?
5

Ease of Position Adjustment

Ease of Position Adjustment
It's crucial for your monitor stand to be easily adjustable in order to use it comfortably in combination with your desk setup. We considered monitors capable of height and angle adjustment, along with having VESA mount compatibility, as satisfactory.

We gave each monitor a recommended score based on the points listed below.

  • Compatibility with VESA mounts
  • Ability to adjust height
