A dashcam in your vehicle can help protect you and provide evidence in case of an emergency. Front-mounted dashcams are the most popular kind because of their small size and affordability. But with lots of dashcams on the market by manufacturers like 70mai and Thinkware, how can you tell if a dashcam’s image quality is going to be sufficient or if the camera angle will be too narrow?
We’ve taken the guesswork out of finding a front-facing dashcam that fits your needs. We gathered five popular models from a range of manufacturers and evaluated them based on six points.
At mybest, we define the best front-facing dashcam as a product that can record and save clear footage no matter where you drive and allows you to review the footage easily. We will explain the features to look for in a dashcam so that you can make an informed purchase.

With many different kinds of dashcams on the market, what are the benefits of choosing a front-facing dashcam? We will explain below.
The main selling point of a front-facing dashcam is how easy it is to install. With some models available for only $40, buying a dashcam isn’t a major investment. Compared to other dashcams, front-facing models have fewer cables, so they’re easier to install and wire. You can start using a front-facing dashcam almost immediately after buying one.
Then there are the practical reasons why it’s smart to purchase a front-facing dashcam. Approximately 80% of serious accidents occur due to collisions from the front and side, according to The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. But if you’ve got a front-facing dashcam in your vehicle, it will record the incident, which can serve as evidence for your insurance company or even if a crime occurs.
Read on to learn more about how to find a front-facing dashcam that suits your needs.
Among the various types of dashcams available, the front-facing dashcam is the most common type, used by the largest number of people.
Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Front-Facing Dashcams.
Even if you buy and install a dashcam, it's pointless if the device can’t record high-quality video when you’re in an accident. Here’s why image quality is a top consideration when choosing a dashcam.
The role of a front-facing dashcam is to capture the circumstances of an accident and leave objective evidence. During our testing, we evaluated image quality in two scenarios to see if each dashcam could fulfill its role. We recreated a daytime road and an intensely lit scene near the entrance and exit of a tunnel.
We observed that all of the dashcams we tested were able to capture a daytime road with at least a basic degree of resolution. Even with images recorded outside with a distance of a car between them, there was not much difference in the visibility of license plate numbers.
On the other hand, we observed a significant difference in the quality of footage when we recorded using the dashcams in backlit conditions. Dashcams with better image quality weren’t overexposed or underexposed, even in a backlit situation capturing the footage of the license plates clearly. Dashcams with lower image quality demonstrated footage that was underexposed due to backlighting and failed to record the scene effectively.
Accidents are more likely to occur in severely backlit areas, such as at night or in a tunnel, as those low-light situations can impair the driver's vision. By choosing a dashcam that can record clearly even in poor conditions, you minimize the risk of missing crucial evidence in the event of an accident.
Our testing showed that the DRV-A601W dashcam by Kenwood and the F70 PRO dashcam by Thinkware were able to produce clear images under both good and bad conditions.
These cameras could capture evidence in any scene without being affected by the environment. If you look at the pictures of each product in our rankings section, you can also see the image quality of other products that we tested.
No matter how good a dashcam’s image quality is, there's a chance that you may not fully capture the evidence of an accident if its field of view is narrow. So it’s important to check the width of the shooting angle of a dashcam.
Accidents aren’t always head-on. Major accidents can also occur when oncoming cars, bicycles, or pedestrians suddenly pop out from the sidewalk.
That’s why it’s important that your dashcam captures a wide view. During our testing, we evaluated the necessary horizontal viewing angle to accurately capture the details of an accident. We determined that if the horizontal viewing angle is 110 degrees or more, the footage can cover a broad range, making it easier to document unexpected occurrences on the road.
A wide camera angle makes it easier to capture whether you or the other party involved in an accident was obeying signals or had used turn signals when driving in an intersection or when passing. This information can be very helpful as objective evidence when determining responsibility in an accident.
That said, not all dashcams disclose their horizontal viewing angle. However, based on our testing, we recommend you choose a dashcam with a viewing angle of 110 degrees or more.
When we measured the horizontal angle of view in the dashcams, some differed greatly from the angle that was advertised. Also, the specs for some dashcams did not clearly specify whether the "horizontal angle of view" was the angle that connects the left and right ends of the range visible from the lens or whether the "diagonal angle of view" was the angle connecting the ends of the diagonal line visible from the lens. Because manufacturers don’t always provide all the information you need to make an informed purchase, just keep in mind that some of the angles of view advertised may not be accurate.
The only front-facing dashcam that provided both high image quality and a wide field of view in our testing was the Kenwood DRV-A601W. Since those are the top features to look for in a dashcam, we recommend you consider this model if you’re not sure which dashcam to purchase.
In addition to capturing video footage, some dashcams can also use GPS and accelerometer data to record and display routes and driving speeds.
Driving speed can serve as objective evidence showing whether a driver was exceeding the speed limit or whether the vehicle was decelerating just before an accident occurred. This is important evidence when assessing fault.
In addition, having a record of the path each driver took can expedite informing the other party of the location and circumstances of the accident, which may make it easier to reach a resolution.
For some dashcams, you may need to purchase a separate accessory to record GPS information. You can check whether you need one or not for each of the dashcams we tested in our rankings. Our top pick, Kenwood's DRV-A601W, allows you to record GPS information without a separate accessory.
A dashcam is constantly recording data while operating. That can overwhelm the SD memory card that stores that information, making it malfunction.
To make sure your device can still record video and that the SD card is working effectively, we recommend you choose a dashcam with an SD Card Check Function that detects and notifies users of any malfunctions in the SD card.
Although it's possible to detect malfunctions by regularly removing the SD card to check the recorded data, it may not be easy for someone who doesn’t have a high level of technical knowledge. But if the device has an SD Card Check Function, it will notify you of any abnormalities in the SD card when you turn the dashcam on. Checking for problems before you start driving is better than having to reinsert or replace the SD card during your commute.
There are three ways to watch the footage recorded on a dashcam: through the device's display, on a PC, or on a smartphone. Some front-mounted dashcams do not have a built-in display, so you’ll need to use a PC or smartphone to check the footage.
The best practice for viewing the footage is to load the SD card onto a PC. That’s easier than installing apps or having to connect to Wi-Fi to use a smartphone, and you can quickly view the footage.
Many of the apps we tried were not user-friendly, and most testers had difficulty connecting to a smartphone. Since dashcam footage is important for use as evidence in an accident or hit-and-run, we recommend using a PC to ensure a simple and smooth viewing experience.

Kenwood's 4K Dash Cam DRV-A601W boasts the ability to capture clear recordings in 8.3 million pixels. Another top selling point is the ability to choose between adhesive tape and suction cup mounts, depending on where you want to install the dashcam.
As advertised, during our testing, we were able to clearly see the numbers of the license plates under both good and bad conditions: not only on well-lit roads during the day but also near the entrances and exits of tunnels where the backlighting is intense, and on roads at night. If a hit-and-run did take place, we’re confident we would be able to collect the evidence necessary to identify the other party’s vehicle using this dashcam.
When we evaluated the width of the shooting angle, we recorded a horizontal angle of 110 degrees. Because this dashcam can widely capture its surroundings, even if you collide with an oncoming vehicle when turning at an intersection or if you get cut off, it can record not only the moment of the accident but also the circumstances leading up to it.
For playback, this dashcam has a dedicated PC viewer that can be used on both Windows and Mac. In addition to the video, you can check information such as GPS and travel speed using this dashcam. Additionally, it comes with an LCD monitor that can be operated by a touch panel, allowing you to quickly review the footage immediately after an accident.
That said, this dashcam doesn’t have an SD card check function, which is a drawback that could make noticing SD card errors difficult. We recommend you regularly remove the SD card and review the footage to check for SD card errors.
Some testers also said that the dashcam’s app was difficult to operate intuitively. In particular, many people struggled to connect the app to their smartphone for the first time, with quite a few having to try several times before they succeeded. On the other hand, after connecting, our testers found they could relatively easily play and save footage.
While this dashcam has a few drawbacks, our testers gave it high marks for the most crucial features required for a dashcam: image quality and wide angle of view. If you are considering purchasing a front-facing dashcam, this camera should be at the top of your list.

The Dash Cam DRV-A301W from Kenwood utilizes an HDR function to prevent overexposure and underexposure. And its magnetic mount makes it easy to quickly remove the camera when necessary.
During our tests, under good conditions, the license plate was clearly visible. If an accident occurs during bright daytime hours, this dashcam should be able to record sufficient evidence. On the other hand, this dashcam doesn’t perform well under backlit conditions. During our testing, it was somewhat difficult to read the letters and numbers on the license plate. So this camera might not be capable of recording evidence clearly when facing strong sunlight or car headlights.
When we tested the width of this dashcam’s shooting angle, it recorded at a horizontal angle of 110 degrees. Because this camera can record a wide range, even if you get into an accident with an oncoming car at an intersection, this device can not only clearly capture the moment of the accident but also the surrounding circumstances.
This dashcam has a dedicated PC viewer that you can use on both Windows and Mac for playback. In addition to the video, you can also check the GPS and driving speed, which can be useful when negotiating the degree of fault with your insurance company. Also, this dashcam is equipped with an SD card check function, so if there is a problem with the SD card, you will be notified, so you won’t get caught with a malfunctioning SD card when you need it to record.
On the other hand, many users had trouble connecting to the app associated with this dashcam. In addition, even when the dashcam was connected, we observed random disconnections and the screen unexpectedly went dark, so this may not be the best dashcam when it comes to ease of use. But you can still easily check the footage by inserting the SD card into your PC.

Thinkware's F70 PRO TW-F70PRO incorporates distortion correction technology, which can improve image quality. Although conventional cameras tend to have significant distortion at the edges of the image, this product claims to keep distortion to a minimum.
During our testing, we were able to clearly record the license plate under both good and poor lighting conditions. This dashcam could easily record video while suppressing overexposure, not only on roads when it was bright out, but also near tunnel entrances and exits and roads when the sun was strong.
When we measured the shooting angle's width, the horizontal angle was 90 degrees. Because of the narrower width, this dashcam had more blind spots than some higher-end models, so it may not be able to fully capture the movement of oncoming vehicles at intersections or sudden collisions.
The dedicated viewer for PC is compatible with both Mac and Windows, but you’ll need to purchase additional equipment to check information such as GPS and driving speed. The SD card check function is included, though, so you can troubleshoot any malfunctions before you get on the road.
That said, connecting the app and smartphone took several tries. Additionally, the instruction manual is bare bones and didn’t have enough information about how to connect the dashcam to the app. Even after eventually connecting the dashcam to the app we observed several instances when the live video was frozen and we could not check it in the app. So we recommend you use a PC to watch footage for a smoother viewing experience.

Garmin's Dash Cam Mini 2 is very compact at about the size of a car key. What also sets this dashcam apart from other models is its voice control capability, which allows you to save videos and start and stop audio recording even while driving.
This dashcam got mixed reviews during our testing. Under good conditions, our testers could see the characters on license plates quite clearly. Even if an accident occurred during bright daytime hours, this camera could effectively capture the evidence. On the other hand, under backlit conditions, “black crush”, or details that are hard to see in the darker parts of an image, was a major drawback, and our testers could not fully read the license plates. When driving near the entrance and exit of a tunnel during strong sunlight, or when car headlights are approaching, this dashcam may not be able to record evidence as clearly as some other dashcams on this list.
When it came to the field of view, we recorded a wide horizontal angle of 110 degrees. So even if there was an oncoming car at an intersection or if you were suddenly cut off by another car, this dashcam would be able to record the situation.
That said, this dashcam provides less evidence than some other models on this list because it isn’t equipped to record driving route or speed. Also, it doesn't have an SD card check function, so you’ll have to make sure to regularly check your SD card to ensure that it’s still working properly.
This dashcam does work with an app, but it requires an initial registration, which could slow you down if you want to check the video immediately. This dashcam does work with Wi-Fi connection and via Bluetooth. That said, some testers noted that neither connection worked well, so if you want to check the video easily, we recommend you use a PC.

The Dash Cam M300 by 70mai incorporates noise-reduction technology, and promises to maintain clear recording by minimizing noise in night time footage, preventing phenomena like crushed blacks or blown-out whites.
Under good conditions, we were able to easily see the letters and numbers on the license plate. If an accident occurs on the road during daylight, this dashcam should be able to clearly record sufficient evidence. On the other hand, in areas near the entrance and exit of tunnels where there is strong backlighting, and on roads at night, we were unable to read the license plate at all. So be aware that under poor lighting conditions, this dashcam may not record effectively.
When we tested for the width of the shooting angle, we recorded a horizontal angle of 110 degrees. With this wide angle, this dashcam should not only capture the moment an accident occurs, but also the circumstances that led to it.
This dashcam doesn’t have any dedicated viewer software, but you can check the video through the app. However, the app doesn’t record driving speed or the route, so this dashcam doesn’t provide as much evidence as some other models. Also, this device doesn’t have an SD card check function, so you’ll need to look regularly to make sure it’s working correctly.
Though this dashcam works with an app, it was somewhat cumbersome to use as you had to create an account the first time you used the app. Since this device did not come with an LCD monitor and required a connection to a PC or a smartphone, this dashcam isn’t the best option if you want to check footage immediately.
In addition, the instruction manual wasn’t very detailed, and our reviewers didn’t find it to be user-friendly. That said, once our testers connected to the app, they were able to easily play back the footage, so establishing a connection was the only major hurdle.

At mybest, we define the best front-facing dashcam as a product that can record and save clear images regardless of lighting conditions and let you easily and thoroughly check the footage.
To find the best front-facing dashcam, we collected five best-selling models from popular manufacturers, Amazon, and other sites and evaluated them based on the following six points.
Low-Light Image Quality
Angle of View
Recording Accessibility
App Usability
SD Card Error Prevention
Products we tested
Recording conditions: default camera settings while indoors with the lights on
Test equipment: license plate from the state of Nevada
We set the standard for low-light image quality as a product that can fully record license plate numbers under any environmental conditions.
In a setting with intense backlighting, we installed a dashcam 6.5 feet away from a license plate. We asked 10 testers to see if they could clearly read the letters and numbers on the license plate in the recorded footage. We scored the dashcams with the highest accuracy the best.
We replicated the low-light conditions near the exit of a tunnel in a room with an illumination of approximately 0.1 lux, using blackout curtains. We illuminated a license plate placed 6.5 feet away from the dashcam with an artificial sun lamp capable of producing a brightness equivalent to sunlight. We then had each dashcam record the license plate while on its default camera settings.
We set the standard for angle of view as a product that can not only record in front of a vehicle but can also capture circumstances such as someone walking into the road from the sidewalk or a vehicle suddenly cutting into your lane.
Using a protractor and chalk, we drew angles radiating from the center of each dashcam symmetrically to the left and right by 10 degrees each, ranging from 40 degrees to 130 degrees.
We then set cones on each chalk line and had the dashcams record the view in front of them, then measuring how many cones each dashcam could capture, and in correspondence, how many degrees wide each product’s viewing angle was.
We assigned high scores to the dashcams that could capture the widest angles up to the maximum horizontal angle of 130 degrees, and could easily record sudden movements.
Our testers checked each product based on the following points, scoring and recommending them accordingly.
We set the standard for app usability as an app that is easy to connect to a dashcam, easy to understand, and simple to use.
Our testers downloaded and evaluated the ease of use of each product's app, scoring and recommending them accordingly.
Ease of initial setup
Ease of video playback
Ease of video saving
We set the standard for SD card error prevention as a product fully equipped with a mechanism to prevent SD card errors.
Our testers evaluated each dashcam, assigning a score based on the following criteria and recommending each product accordingly.
