5 Best Front and Rear Dashcams [Tested and Reviewed]

Front and rear dashcams are increasing in popularity for both safety and legal reasons, but camera systems that capture footage in both the front and rear provide even more safety and are even more effective at preventing tailgating.

Front and rear dashcams come in a variety of models from many manufacturers, including VIOFO and Azdome. If you are considering purchasing one, you likely have concerns about which dashcams offer the best image quality and whether they offer wide-angle imaging.

We tested 5 of the most popular front and rear dashcams from various manufacturers, examining each based on seven criteria.

At mybest, we define the best front and rear dashcam as a product that records evidence without missing anything at any time and allows easy viewing of captured footage. We explain the best way to choose a front and rear dashcam based on what we discovered through our tests, so please take our findings into account when making your purchase.

Is a Rear Camera Necessary?

Most people know about the benefits of a front-facing dashcam. However, some wonder whether a rear-facing camera is necessary. We explain the benefits of a rear camera so you can make an informed decision about whether one is right for you.

They Help Prevent Road Rage and Rear-End Collisions

They Help Prevent Road Rage and Rear-End Collisions

Road rage is a scary situation that every driver has to deal with occasionally. Road rage appears on the news often and you have probably heard a story from someone about the accident they were in due to it. In Los Angeles, the number of road rage incidents has risen in recent years, leading local police to step up their vigilance (reference: Crosstown L.A.).

Front and rear camera dashcams play a role in dealing with these types of people. They cover the front view like most camera systems but also record the rear of your vehicle. They also document rear-end collisions, so you don’t have to rely on your testimony alone in case of an accident; you have video proof of what happened. For those buying a dashcam for the first time, a system that records both the front and rear of your vehicle is a wise choice.

How to Choose Front and Rear Dashcams

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Front and Rear Dashcams.

1

Rexing Dashcams Clearly Capture License Plate Numbers

Rexing Dashcams Clearly Capture License Plate Numbers

We tested several dashcams under both good and bad lighting conditions to find the ones that produce the highest quality images on both their front and rear cameras. Rexing's Smart Mirror Dash Cam M2 and the Dual Channel Dash Cam V1P-4K met our strict criteria.

As its name suggests, the Smart Mirror Dash Cam M2 attaches to your car's rear-view mirror, and the Dual Channel Dash Cam V1P-4K comes with an integrated monitor and camera. Both capture clear images of license plates regardless of the environment, making them ideal for recording evidence in the event of an accident.

Both Cameras Can Capture the License Plate Numbers of the Car Behind You

Both Cameras Can Capture the License Plate Numbers of the Car Behind You

The most significant difference we experienced during testing was the image quality of the rear cameras. All of the front cameras we tested captured license plates with reasonable quality, but some rear cameras were blurry, even at close distances, making it difficult to make out license plates.

You can track down a hit-and-run vehicle using a combination of surrounding security camera footage and eyewitness reports, even if a license plate isn't fully captured on a dash cam, but doing so can be time-consuming.

The Smart Mirror Dash Cam M2 and Dual Channel Dash Cam V1P-4K from Rexing both capture an offender's license plate clearly, which might make the difference between bringing a criminal to justice and having to pay for damage done to your car out of your own pocket.

Our Best Cameras Recorded Well Even at Night

Our Best Cameras Recorded Well Even at Night

Cars do not exclusively run on roads with a clear, low-reflective environment. Bearing in mind that driving also occurs in tunnels and during the night, it's crucial to select a camera that can handle back lighting and significant changes in brightness.

A significant difference emerged in our testing of rear cameras. The highest-ranking products were able to adequately adjust brightness even in intense back-lighting conditions, to the point of being able to fully read a license plate. On the other hand, our lower-ranking products struggled with adjustments, leading to a result of total overexposure. Given that these might not be high enough quality to function as evidence, it's important that a camera can properly capture images even in backlit conditions.

2

They Also Capture a Wide Angle From Both the Front and Rear

In addition to choosing a dashcam for its clarity, consider one that shoots at a wide angle. The wider the angle, the more information is recorded, enhancing its value as evidence.

For Clarity and a Wide Camera Angle, Choose Rexing’s M2-Smart Mirror Dashcam

For Clarity and a Wide Camera Angle, Choose Rexing’s M2-Smart Mirror Dashcam

The only dashcam we tested that offered a high-quality resolution and wide camera angle at both the front and rear was the M2-Smart Mirror Dash Cam by Rexing. If you are on the fence about which dashcam to buy, this one is a safe choice because it meets these two most important criteria.

A Wide Angle in Both the Front and Rear Means More Detail is Recorded in Case of an Accident

A Wide Angle in Both the Front and Rear Means More Detail is Recorded in Case of an Accident

All of the front cameras we tested had a horizontal viewing angle of more than 100 degrees, but some rear cameras’ viewing angles were only 50 degrees. It’s simple math—the greater the viewing angle, the more information is recorded. More information is better because it can help show more of the story of what happened during an accident, and it can help determine vehicle speeds and the place where an accident occurred, which are especially useful when making an insurance claim, or when proving a case in court.

We found that a viewing angle of 100 degrees was sufficient to record sufficiently on either side of a vehicle. Unfortunately, not all manufacturers include the viewing angle in their specifications for a dashcam. In some cases, our tests did not match the viewing angle that a manufacturer reported in a dashcam’s specs. Therefore, we recommend that you check out the results of our tests before buying a dashcam.

A broader recording angle could be critical to determining what happened in a case or claim. Any blind spot in the dash cam could lead to ambiguity about what happened in a given incident. The more footage the better for legal or insurance purposes.

3

Recording of GPS and Vehicle Speed Data is Crucial

Recording of GPS and Vehicle Speed Data is Crucial

Some dashcams and other products display driving routes and speeds using data from GPS and acceleration sensors. The speed of a vehicle just before an accident evidences whether the driver was driving at an appropriate speed or slowing down, which is vital when an insurance company is determining who was at fault in an accident. Reporting the driving route means that the location of the accident is recorded objectively, which is difficult to refute.

Masakazu Furukawa
Content Manager at mybest
Masakazu Furukawa
Recording GPS and speed information might require an add-on for your dashcam. Check under the GPS rankings to see whether a dashcam has the features you want. For example, Rexing's M2-Smart Mirror Dash Cam can record GPS information without an add-on.
4

Continuous Recording and High-Capacity SD Cards

Continuous Recording and High-Capacity SD Cards

Dashcams usually continue to record new data by overwriting old data. If you want to preserve recordings long-term without erasing old ones, such as incidents that occur at night while your vehicle is parked, you need a dashcam that supports a large-capacity SD card.

With a two-camera setup, we recommend a dashcam that supports SD card capacities of 128GB or more. Even when recording full HD constantly, you can store more than 8 hours of video from both cameras, which covers approximately one night.

5

Detecting SD Card Errors

Detecting SD Card Errors

A dashcam constantly reads and writes data while in operation, which leads to a high load and thus a propensity for errors. To mitigate the risk of losing footage, choose a dashcam with an SD card check function, which detects abnormalities in the storage media and alerts the driver.

You can detect abnormalities by removing the SD card yourself and checking recorded data, but that's cumbersome and easy to forget. A dashcam’s SD card check function notifies you of errors while reading or writing to the card when you turn on the power. With an extra SD card on hand, you can swap out the old one and install the new one quickly so you are never without your dashcam.

mybest’s Top Choice: Records High-Quality Images in Any Environment

What we loved

  • Blind spot detection
  • Wide angle recording in both front and rear cameras
  • Supports up to 128GB SD card

What we didn't love

  • No app

Rexing’s Smart Mirror Dash Cam M2 is a room mirror-type dashcam. It is equipped with a blind spot detection feature that alerts the driver to the presence of vehicles that might not be visible in the side or rearview mirrors.

Under both good and bad conditions, we were able to clearly record the license plate of the vehicle behind us. This was true not only on roads in bright daylight, but near the entrances and exits of tunnels, and on roads at night, using backlighting.

Both the front and rear cameras recorded a horizontal angle of 100 degrees. Since it captures such a wide area around the vehicle, it is possible to record the sequence of events that led up to an accident even if one occurred due to a collision with an oncoming vehicle, or when abruptly cut off.

The dedicated viewer is compatible with both Windows and Mac. It not only displays videos, but also confirms information such as the travel route and speed. This dashcam is operated by a touch panel, and its operation is intuitive. Since there is no app, you can view the videos on the device's display or on a PC.

You cannot set the recording time while parked, but the SD card supports up to 128GB, so you can record for extended periods, such as when parked overnight, without any danger that the device will record over older videos. A check function tells you if there is a problem reading or writing to the SD card, so you never miss an important video.

What we loved

  • Remote control makes it easy to use
  • Wide angle recording in both front and rear cameras
  • Supports 256GB SD cards

What we didn't love

  • App not user-friendly
  • Some trouble connecting to Wi-Fi

VIOFO’s A129 dashcam comes with a remote control that connects via Bluetooth. The remote enables activation of an event recording function, which protects recordings from being overwritten, without having to take your eyes off the road.

Under good conditions, we were able to clearly capture license plates. If an accident occurs when lighting is not optimal for video recording, it might be difficult to record the evidence you need. The backlight was weak, so recording even in bright sunlight can leave some recordings lacking in details.

Both front and rear cameras recorded a 100-degree angle horizontally, which is great for capturing not just the moment of an accident, but some time before it occurs.

A dedicated viewer can be used on both Windows and Mac, allowing you to check information on driving routes and speeds. This can be useful when assigning fault in the event of an accident, especially when dealing with insurance companies.

The included app is not user-friendly. We heard complaints such as it taking a long time to connect to Wi-Fi, and even after connecting, the loading icon freezes. We therefore suggest viewing recorded videos either on the device's display or a PC.

The dashcam features an SD card error check function, which detects abnormalities with reading and writing. A parking feature allows you to set a timer so you can record only at desired times, such as during less crowded hours of the night, preventing too much battery use. It supports SD cards up to 256GB, and since it can store long recordings, we recommend this dashcam to those who want to use it while parked.

Image Quality Sufficient; Shooting Range Lacking

What we loved

  • Good image quality
  • Withstands extreme temperatures

What we didn't love

  • Viewing angle slightly lacking

Rexing's Dual Channel Dash Cam V1P-4K was designed to withstand extreme temperatures. The manufacturer reports that this dashcam can be operated in temperatures ranging from -20°F to 176°F, which means it is great for traveling, no matter where you find yourself.

License plates recorded well under both good and bad conditions, from bright daylight when reflections were strong to entrances and exits of tunnels, where the cameras’ strong backlighting made the recording clear.

During our tests, the front camera recorded a horizontal angle of 100 degrees, and the rear captured 90 degrees. The front camera’s angle was sufficient, but the rear camera’s viewing angle was less than other dashcams we tested.

A dedicated viewer allows for reviewing videos on both Windows and Mac. However, a separate GPS logger is required to record driving routes and speeds. No app means that you must view recordings on either the device's display or on a PC.

No SD card check function means that you will not be notified of storage errors, but you can manually check for errors by removing the SD card and testing it yourself. No timer is available for recording while parked, but support for up to a 256GB SD card means that you can record for a long time, even while parked overnight.

Poor Image Quality; Narrow Field of View

What we loved

  • Waterproof rear camera
  • Mounting outside of vehicle is possible

What we didn't love

  • Image quality is lacking
  • Low rear-camera viewing angle

Orskey’s Dash Cam S800 offers a waterproof rear camera that resists rain and splashes, and it can be mounted outside the vehicle. However, under both good and bad conditions, license plates were difficult to see, so evidence needed for insurance claims or in court might be missing when you need it. The rear camera’s quality was especially poor, with license plates difficult to read starting at 12 feet. Using a backlight, both cameras overexposed severely, making them difficult to function as evidence.

The front camera recorded a 100-degree horizontal field of view, and the rear at 50 degrees. The front view was sufficient, but the rear captures a limited range, so the full video of an accident might be difficult to capture.

The device lacks a GPS feature, and it cannot record routes or speeds, so it is less versatile than other dashcams we tested. No app is available, so use the device’s display or a PC to view recordings.

An SD card check function lets you know when the storage device is experiencing errors, and a timer allows you to record while parked without wasting battery power. However, support for only a 32GB SD card means that long-term recordings are not possible.

License Plates Difficult to See, Field of View Insufficient

What we loved

  • Supports 128GB storage
  • SD card check feature

What we didn't love

  • Rear camera’s field of view is lacking
  • No app

AZDOME’s Dual Dash Cam M01 Pro detects and warns drivers of abnormal closeness to cars in front and due to sudden lane changes. Under both good and bad conditions, the front camera records clearly, but the rear camera wasn’t clear enough to read license plates at any distance or in any environment.

The front camera offers an impressive 110-degree viewing angle, but the rear camera offers only 60 degrees, making rear accidents more difficult to see for insurance companies and courts. No feature is available to confirm driving routes and speeds, which means that this dashcam offers less value in comparison to some of the other dashcams we tested. With no app, the recording must be viewed on the device itself or a PC.

An SD card check feature warns of storage errors, and since this dashcam supports up to a 128GB SD card, recording for long periods is no problem. No timer, however, means that a large SD card is needed for overnight recording.

How We Tested Front and Rear Dashcams

Front and Rear Dashcams Evaluation

At mybest, we defined the best dual-camera dashcams as those that can reliably record evidence at all times, and those that offer high-quality videos that can be viewed easily. To find the best ones, we gathered 5 of the best-selling dashcams from popular manufacturers such as Amazon, and other sites. These selected dashcams underwent critical testing across seven points:

  • High Light Image Quality
  • Low Light Image Quality
  • Field of View (Dual Cameras)
  • Recording Accessibility
  • App Usability
  • SD Card Error Prevention
  • Hit-and-Run Protection

High Light Image Quality

High Light Image Quality

We set the standard for high light image quality as a dashcam that allows anyone to clearly read a car’s license plate.

Scoring Method

From distances of 12, 16, and 32 feet, we took pictures of license plates using the front and rear cameras. We asked a panel of 10 testers to assess whether the letters and numbers on the plates were fully readable using captured footage. Those with high accuracy were ranked and scored.

Test Conditions

  • Shooting in a lit indoor environment using default settings
  • Test equipment: Nevada State license plate

2

Low Light Image Quality

Low Light Image Quality

Low light image quality was assessed to simulate the various environments in which dashcams are used. We set the standard for low light image quality as a dashcam that can easily read a car’s license plate under any environmental conditions.

Scoring Method

In an environment that simulated intense backlighting, we took pictures of license plates using both the front and rear cameras. We then showed the captured footage to a panel of 10 testers who assessed whether the letters and numbers on the license plates were legible. The higher the accuracy rate, the more a dashcam was recommended and scored.

Test Conditions

  • Environment: Replicated the vicinity of a tunnel exit using a room with an illumination of approximately 0.1 lux. Blackout curtains were used to ensure minimal ambient light. We illuminated a license plate using an artificial sun lamp capable of producing brightness equivalent to sunlight. The license plate was recorded by the dashcam from 6.5 feet.
  • Equipment used: License plate, SOLAX xc-500 solar lamp
  • Settings: Default

Field of View (Dual Cameras)

Field of View (Dual Cameras)

We set the standard for field of view as a dashcam that captures the widest field of view possible, especially to capture sidewalks and side streets, from which cars and other vehicles can emerge.

Scoring Method

Using a protractor and chalk lines, angles were set in a radial pattern around the dashcam, symmetrically to the left and right at 10-degree intervals from 40 to 130 degrees. Viewing footage from the dashcam, we positioned cones on the test field and measured the degrees to which the dashcam could capture. We tested both front and rear cameras using this method.

Test Conditions

  • Test Equipment: Protractor; chalk lines
  • Procedure: Positioned cones as markers on pre-set angles and captured images
  • Settings: Default
4

Recording Accessibility

Recording Accessibility

We set the standard for recording accessibility of a dashcam as one that allows easy video viewing on both the device and a PC.

Scoring Method

The testers assessed each dashcam and scored them based on the points below, converting a recommendation for each product into a score.

What We Checked

  • Does it have a built-in monitor?

  • Can the device be operated using a touchscreen?

  • Can you view footage using Windows Media Player or QuickTime Player?

  • Is it possible to review the driving route?

  • Can you check the driving speed?

5

App Usability

App Usability

We set the standard for app usability as an app that can be operated simply and is easy enough for anyone to understand.

Scoring Method

The testers downloaded and evaluated each app for ease of use, and they quantified recommendations for each dashcam.

Test Conditions

  • Testers: 10 smartphone users aged 20 to 50
  • Procedures: Smartphones running both Android and iOS were used during testing. Compatibility with OS versions that exceeded the minimum requirements required by an app was confirmed prior to testing

What We Checked

  • Ease of initial setup
  • Ease of video playback
  • Ease of video saving
6

SD Card Error Prevention

SD Card Error Prevention

We set the standard for SD card error prevention as a dashcam that had a feature that prevented SD card errors that would interfere with recording footage.

Scoring Method

Testers examined each product, scoring them based on the following points and converting scores into recommendations.

What We Checked

  • Does the dashcam specify supported SD cards on the manufacturer’s website or sales page?

  • Does the dashcam have an SD card check feature?

  • Is regular formatting of the SD card unnecessary?

  • Does the dashcam have automatic synchronization or cloud integration?

7

Hit-and-Run Protection

Hit-and-Run Protection

We set the criteria for a dashcam with hit-and-run protection as one equipped with a mechanism for long recording times while the car is parked.

Scoring Method

Testers assessed each product and scored them based on the following points, quantifying their recommendations.

What We Checked

  • Does the dashcam have motion detection or G-sensor?

  • Does the dashcam have battery protection?

  • Is it possible to set the recording time?

  • Is the user notified of shock/motion to the dashcam?

  • Does the dashcam support SD cards with a recording capacity of 256GB or higher?
