Garden kneelers should be comfortable and suit your needs, whether you're gardening, repairing a car, bathing your dog, or doing household chores. Here are some factors to consider when choosing one for yourself.
There are two main types of garden kneelers. Some are a simple kneeler pad. Others have handrails and can be used as a kneeler or as a bench.
Take a look at the assembly difficulty. This is an important factor not only for storage but also for portability. If you're going to be working in different spots, you'll want a kneeler that's easy to set up and carry around as you move around the garden. Whether there are screws or a spring mechanism, you want to be sure the seat is secure and balanced and the frame won't collapse.
Also note that these kneelers will take up more storage space than a flat kneeler. However, many kneelers have a sturdy metal frame that's foldable and can be stored away nearly flat. Others are made only of plastic, which is a plus if you don't want to contend with rust.
Another bonus is that pad kneelers store compactly since they're flat. If you want something that takes up even less storage space, look for a kneeler that folds in half. This design is also useful if you want an extra-thick surface to kneel on.
Most kneelers are made from EVA foam, which is fairly firm and water-resistant. Note, too, that the more water-resistant a material is, the easier it’s going to be to clean. For a more comfort-focused kneeler, look for a softer, lower-density foam like memory foam. Do keep in mind, however, that those foams tend to be less durable than their harder counterparts.
The thickness and durability of the foam is also important. You'll want a material that is strong enough to withstand surfaces that are hard, like concrete, or rough, such as gravel. Some kneelers have one-inch thick foam, while some brands offer foam at a 1.5-inch thickness or even two inches or more.
Another factor is called compression set. When the foam is compressed, that is, when you kneel on it, will the indentations from your knees be permanent? Will the foam get worn out with use and lose its ability to maintain its original shape? Or will the foam keep its shape and thickness for a long time?
You'll often see the term "high-density" to describe foam in garden kneeler product descriptions. That's a good thing, as high-density foam can recover its shape after being compressed.
There are also smaller kneelers that are more molded to the shape of your knees, but keep in mind the spacing between the knee indentations is not changeable, so you'd have to make sure it suits your body. If you're looking at a kneeler with handrails or planning to sit on a kneeler pad, also make sure the foam part will be the right size to comfortably accommodate your body when seated.
The weight is also important. You want your kneeler to be light enough to carry around the garden as well as easy to store. Most kneeler pads should be fairly compact and lightweight. A kneeler with handrails will be a bit heavier, usually around six pounds, and take up more space in storage. Check the product listing for the weight and the dimensions of the kneeler when open and folded.
Handles are another helpful feature. Built-in handles are convenient for transporting the kneeler, and as a bonus, you can store them by hanging them up. A lot of pad kneelers and some handrail kneelers will have a convenient cut-out handle. Some pad kneelers fold up like a briefcase and have sewn-on handles.

The foam is also resistant to flattening out and absorbs minimal water, making it quick-drying and easy to clean. This kneeler is lightweight at 12 ounces, and there's a built-in handle for carrying convenience. Plus, there are 12 different colors to choose from, including bright yellow, turquoise, and purple.
It's easy to fold for storage, but for your safety, a spring mechanism prevents the kneeler from accidentally folding while you’re using it. There are two included tool bags, one that has large pockets and one with smaller pockets.
Some reviewers reported that their kneeler cracked or broke, even though they weighed less than the advertised weight capacity. They reported that the frame between the two pads is plastic, not metal like the handles, and therefore not sturdy. Happy buyers loved the width of the seat, especially those with larger body measurements.
The foam is wrapped in a neoprene cover with a water-resistant inner layer to protect from damage. The cover has handles so the kneeler is easy to fold up and carry, and you can remove the cover to wash it.
However, many reviewers liked that this kneeler was lightweight but sturdy and found that the handles helped them get up easily. Many, including those who have arthritis or who had knee or back surgery, called the product a lifesaver! They also appreciated that kneeler is easy to fold up and store.
What makes this garden kneeler stand out is the material: it's made of closed-cell rubber, not plastic. This type of rubber foam is durable, heavy-duty, and resistant to sunlight and won't absorb liquid. You can easily wash it with soap and water.
Another plus is that this material won't compression set, meaning the kneeler won't become permanently indented by the weight of your knees; it will return to its original one-inch thickness.
A few reviewers wished that the pad were bigger, one saying they had to keep their knees close together because of the small size. Happy buyers liked that the foam doesn't lose its shape and that their knees didn't leave imprints. Several people said they preferred the convenience of this kneeler to wearing kneepads. They found this pad made it comfortable to kneel, even on concrete or rocks!
This kneeler is made with XL EXTRALIGHT injection foam molding technology, a Foam Creations, Inc. speciality that makes the material lightweight, flexible, durable and 100 percent waterproof. The foam is 2.5 inches thick for your comfort! Plus, there's a grooved pattern on the underside of the kneeler to further support your knees.
If you're conscious of the contents and safety, this material is phthalate- and latex-free contains no heavy metals, and is resistant to chemicals and fire. And because the material is resistant to water, the kneeler is easy to clean.
One reviewer found the kneeler too firm and uncomfortable, and another wished there was a bit more padding. However, overall, reviewers liked how this kneeler protected their knees. One reviewer reported that the kneeler was easy to clean and quick-drying.
Assembly is simple, requiring only two screws, but do note that this kneeler does not fold up and doesn't have a handle, so if you're looking for portability and compact storage, this might not be the kneeler for you. However, unlike other kneelers, this one is all plastic, so you don't have to worry about rust.
Some negative reviewers complained that the knee indentations were spaced too far apart. Do keep in mind that the indentations are fixed, so your height, the size of your knees, and your kneeling preferences will affect whether or not this is a good kneeler for you. On the other hand, positive reviewers loved the comfort and cushion this lightweight kneeler provided their knees.
