How to Choose Lip Balms For Soft, Hydrated Lips

Before you choose a lip balm, a closer examination of the state your lips are in is required. Additionally, the sensitivity of your lips, the weather you are subject to, the ingredients used, and the type of application are factors you also need to consider.

1

Choose a Lip Balm Based on Your Current Climate and Conditions

An ideal lip balm should have the best hydrating and nourishing properties. Some people need extra hydration with protection based on how they maintain their lips and the climate they live in.

Search for Effective Moisturizers for Dry Weather

Search for Effective Moisturizers for Dry Weather

Lips balms that offer intense protection and hydration to lips are required for those with lips prone to excessive drying since they sink into your lips throughout the day. The concentration of the ingredients required to hydrate and protect the lips depends on the person.

Ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, and avocado oil can work for most people. They have high moisturizing properties and can soften your lips. They also do not irritate the lips and are absorbed quickly.

A beeswax-based lip balm can also be a great addition to your cosmetic bag. Being a humectant, this component pulls in moisture. It is also a natural anti-bacterial and will not dry out your lips.

If your lips are dry or chapped, choose a lip balm that is greasy and ointment-based with hydrating ingredients. These will provide moisture that lasts throughout the day. You want to apply several times throughout the day if you're especially dry. This can also help protect your lips from anything they may come in contact with.

Beeswax lip balms also help provide hydration to the skin, but propolis (the active ingredient) is a common cause of allergic dermatitis.

Petroleum Jelly Can Help Dry, Cracked, or Chapped Lips

Petroleum Jelly Can Help Dry, Cracked, or Chapped Lips

Petroleum jelly, or petrolatum, is made of mineral oil and waxes. A lip balm containing petrolatum is great for windy days and for treating chapped lips because it seals out dry air and seals in your lips' moisture.

You could use petroleum jelly in combination with other balms, or apply a humectant like honey first and use the petroleum jelly to lock it in. It may cause clogged pores around the lips, but most people don't have any adverse reactions from it.

Petroleum jelly is a good choice if you aren't sure why you have chapped lips, since it's a single-ingredient product. Using it alone eliminates other possible irritants like fragrances or beeswax, so you can try to work out what was causing your lip sensitivity before going back to products with more complicated formulas.

Petrolatum jelly is simple and effective at helping with dry lips. I recommend using this to my patients who have allergic contact dermatitis since petrolatum is very bland and does not have many additives. It's extremely hydrating and can trap in moisture. It also serves as a barrier to protect the fragile lip skin from the environment.

Make Sure to Pick a Balm With SPF in Sunny Weather

Make Sure to Pick a Balm With SPF in Sunny Weather

The skin on your lips is as sensitive to the sun’s rays as your facial skin is. To protect your lips, use a lip balm that offers protection from the damage of the sun’s UV rays. Those with SPF 30 or higher are best to defend your lips when you are exposed to intense sun, but SPF 15 can work for winter and those who spend less time outside.

Another thing to consider is the ingredients. Many dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreens for your lips instead of the more easily-absorbed chemical ones, so look for zinc or titanium dioxide and avoid avobenzone, octocrylene, oxybenzone, and others.

Lip balms containing vitamin E can help fight free radicals that cause aging. Furthermore, they can protect your lips from UV damage caused by the sun's rays. They also have great hydrating properties.

SPF in lip balm is a must, especially when on a sunny vacation or with lots of outdoor time. The lower lip especially is a common place for skin cancer or sun damage (actinic cheilitis) to occur.

Both of these conditions require extensive treatment. Skin cancer on the lip in particular can be life-threatening. Wearing SPF on the lip can reduce your chances of having skin cancer or severe sun damage on your lip.

Lip Balms With Docosonol Are Effective on Cold Sores

Lip Balms With Docosonol Are Effective on Cold Sores

An estimated 20 to 40 percent of US adults are infected with herpes simplex labialis, and one-third of those will continue to experience recurring outbreaks of cold sores (fever blisters). While there's no cure, your lip balm may be able to help hasten the healing during outbreaks.

Look for one that has the active ingredient docosanol, usually in concentrations of 10 percent. From the first signs a sore is coming to full healing will naturally take seven to 10 days in most people. Docosonal, when applied as soon as you feel the signs a blister is forming, can speed the process up to as few as three days.

Camphor, Menthol, and Salicylic Acid Can Dry Out Your Lips More

Camphor, Menthol, and Salicylic Acid Can Dry Out Your Lips More

Ingredients like camphor, menthol, phenol and peppermint in lip balms can cause a cooling and tingling sensation to the lips, which can feel soothing on cracked lips or cold sores. However, the ingredients are actually removing the protective layer of the lips.

This can further cause irritation and dry lips. So, if you like the feeling from these ingredients, make sure it's in a small amount (towards the end of the ingredient list) and don't use them too frequently.

If you find salicylic acid as an ingredient in a lip balm, know that it works by sloughing off the flaky and dry skin on the lips. In fact, the more often you use it, the more dry your lips will get, and the more lip balm you'll be tempted to use! We don't recommend it, except maybe as an occasional exfoliator.

Dr. Lauren Levy

Ingredients like menthol can feel good on the lips and provide a cooling sensation, but they should not be used frequently because they can result in dry lips. They are also common causes of allergic contact dermatitis on the lips. Additionally, sometimes mint products can trigger perioral dermatitis - a small, bumpy, acne-like rash around the mouth.

Avoid lip balms with acids since these can be very irritating to the sensitive skin of the lips. The only benefit of adding an acid would be to help remove any crust or scale that develops on the lips, but this is better and more safely achieved by moistening the lips with an oil-based balm or petrolatum and gently washing the lips.

3

The Application Depends on the Type of Balm, and Your Preference

The Application Depends on the Type of Balm, and Your Preference

Stick lip balms are familiar to many people. They commonly have wax bases, such as beeswax, since those ingredients hold their shape. They're easy to apply with one hand quickly but can melt, for example, if you leave them in a hot car!

Ointment-like lip balms usually have a petrolatum base. These can come in jars, which you dip a finger into for application, or tubes. Tubes are a bit more hygienic, since only a small amount of product is squeezed out and exposed to air, and you don't need to get balm on your finger to apply it.

Tins are nice if you're trying to avoid single-use plastics, but they can be hard to open. And, if a tin is exposed to heat while sitting on its side, the next time you open it you may find the balm melted onto the lid.

Best Celeb Favorite for Dry, Chapped Lips and Skin

Pros:

  • Only a few ingredients
  • Petroleum jelly is one of the most powerful occlusives to lock in moisture and makes up the base
  • Can be used for other purposes, like peeling cuticles and minor cuts and burns
  • Rose scent and glossy finish

Cons:

  • Some reviewers say it's too thin, and they have to reapply a lot
  • It also comes in tins, but users say they can be hard to open

This salve has been around for more than a century, and the formula is fairly simple. It's basically petroleum jelly and cottonseed oil. However, it adds luxury with the aroma of rose; the exact blend is a trade secret.

It's safe to say it has a cult following and is a favorite of many celebrities, but a few reviewers said they wished it lasted longer. Most say the tube makes application easy and clean, and it goes on glossy and leaves their lips soft.

Burt's Bees
All-Weather SPF-15 Moisturizing Lip Balm

Reference price
$6.99
Mid

Best Lip Balm for Daily Sun Protection

Pros:

  • SPF 15 from mineral sunscreen
  • Matte finish
  • 100 percent natural ingredients

Cons:

  • Zinc sunscreen may leave a white cast
  • Some say the texture is too hard and waxy
  • Beeswax is a common allergen for many people

This beeswax-based balm is great at offering both moisture and protection for your lips and is ideal for moderate protection from the sun during everyday activities. It's water-resistant for up to 40 minutes.

Zinc, although recommended over chemical sunscreen by dermatologists for use on the lips, does leave a whitish tint. And some reviewers say this has a sticky, stiff texture. However, they say that makes it tough against harsh weather, and after they got used to how it felt, they became loyal customers.

Tatcha

Best Luxury Balm to Bring Some Sparkle to Your Lip Care Routine

Pros:

  • Real gold flakes
  • Squalane is a powerful emollient with antioxidant properties
  • Camellia oil moisturizes and provides vitamins and omega acids
  • Algae extract has collagen to address fine lines on the lips
  • Green tea and rice bran for antioxidants and anti-aging
  • Licorice extract soothes inflammation

Cons:

  • Contains a small amount of alcohol, which can be drying

This luxurious lip balm contains real gold flakes that will leave a shimmery accent on your lips. But that's not the only luxury; the ingredients are high-end as well. Squalane, camellia oil, algae, and rice bran offer intense moisturizing and smooth your lips, while licorice calms skin irritation.

Some found it a bit drying, and it does have alcohol listed near the end of the formula. But the majority found just the opposite, saying it left their lips soft, moisturized, and with a subtle sheen of gold.

No.4

Vaseline
Moisturizing Beeswax Lip Balm (Pack of 4)

Reference price
$4.71
Low Mid

Best for Intense Lip Repair With a Single Ingredient

Pros:

  • Blue Seal is 100 percent petrolatum, triple-filtered, and is unlikely to cause any allergic reactions
  • Petroleum jelly is a highly effective occlusive that locks in moisture
  • Creates a long-lasting barrier against dry air

Cons:

  • Large jar is best used at home; you can divide it into smaller jars for portability
  • Amazon has quite a few unreliable listings for this product

If your lips are in serious need of repair and protection, petroleum jelly is one of the best things you can use. Vaseline's Blue Seal type is very pure, so it has what you need to keep moisture in and dryness out, and nothing more.

Vaseline makes a lot of products, including a line specifically for lip care, but some reviewers didn't like how those contain flavors, color additives, and other ingredients. Most of them say this version, with its simple formula and thick consistency, works the best and causes no irritation.

No.5

Hurraw!
The Classic American Favorite for Lip Care

Low

Best for Overnight Lip Repair

Pros:

  • Thick and creamy so it lasts all night
  • Vanilla and balsam scent
  • Handmade in small batches in Montana
  • Certified organic, vegan, cruelty-free, and eco-friendly

Cons:

  • Some reviewers didn't like the smell or taste
  • Others said it didn't moisturize as well as expected

This brand makes many varieties of lip balm, all of them organic and vegan. This one is designed for overnight use, and it's thick, so the ingredients will stay put while you sleep.

Some reviewers said it wasn't moisturizing enough, but many said it left their lips feeling softer the next day. Others said the scent helped relax them.

No.6

Aquaphor
Fusion Lip Balm with SPF 30

Reference price
$3.97
Low Mid

Best for Similar Effectiveness to Petroleum Jelly With a Lighter Feel

Pros:

  • Adds a subtle shine
  • Vitamins C, E, and B5 nourish, while humectants and emollients repair and protect
  • Chamomile soothes irritated skin

Cons:

  • Like petroleum jelly based ones, it will cause lip marks on a drinking glass for a while after application

If you have constantly chapped and cracked lips or live in a very dry climate, you need powerful occlusives to keep moisture locked in. This formula goes on with a consistency similar to petroleum jelly, but is less greasy, and works just as well.

Reviewers say it can wear off more easily than petroleum jelly, so they like how this little tube is easy to carry in a pocket and hygienic to reapply. Many say it's excellent for an overnight treatment, too.

No.7

DocoShield
Organic and Tinted Moisturizing Lip Balms

Reference price
$14.99
High Mid

Best for Moisturizing Dry Lips and Healing Cold Sores

Pros:

  • 10 percent docosanol can reduce the time it takes a cold sore to heal
  • Good ingredients for moisturizing, too, like jojoba, beeswax and olive oil
  • Can also prevent lip dryness

Cons:

  • It didn't work for some

This works to shorten the duration of a cold sore, and can even prevent them forming if you catch them fast enough, so it's a great choice for everyday use. It also serves as a moisturizing lip balm and not just a medication.

Some reviewers felt that because it's waxy, the medicine had trouble doing its job, and they said Abreva cured their sores better. But as a lip balm, this double-tasker helped many users keep breakouts under control and keep their lips in top shape.

No.8

Jack Black
EltaMD Broad-Spectrum SPF 31 Lip Balm

Reference price
$8.00
Mid

Best Lip Sunscreen That Leaves a Non-White, Matte Finish

Pros:

  • Chemical sunscreens protect against UV damage without leaving a white cast
  • Matte finish
  • Petroleum jelly base locks in moisture and blocks out dry air
  • Shea and cocoa butters, beeswax, lanolin, and avocado oil moisturize
  • Vitamin E and green tea extract for added skin nutrients

Cons:

  • Since chemical sunscreens are easily absorbed into the skin, dermatologists often advise against using them frequently

This lip balm has a balanced formula with emollients and occlusives to keep lips soft and moisturized, vitamins and antioxidants, and SPF 25. The petroleum jelly makes it great for severe chapping and intense repair and protection.

Some reviewers didn't like the flavor or scent. But many say the moisturization lasts a long time (keep in mind to reapply for sun protection, though!).

No.9

Vanicream
Banana Boat Sport SPF 50 Lip Balm

Reference price
$5.20
Mid

Best for Protection From the Elements for Skiing and Beach Days

Pros:

  • Dimethicone to seal in moisture and keep dry air out
  • It also helps fill in fine lines for smooth-looking lips
  • Strong mineral sunscreens provide SPF 30 for 80 minutes, even in the water

Cons:

  • Mineral sunscreens do leave a white cast

If you're heading out for a day of fun in the sun, this lip balm will keep your lips protected from those harmful UV rays. It offers SPF 30 protection using non-chemical sunscreens, and it seals in moisture to keep the wind from drying and chapping your lips.

The zinc and titanium do turn your lips white, so some reviewers recommend using it in conjunction with a colored gloss or another tinted balm. They say it's very effective against sunburns, though, and that's what really matters.

No.10

eos
Cherry-flavored Organic Lip Balm

Reference price
$4.96
Low Mid

Best Organic Brand for Those Who Like Tingly Lip Balm

Pros:

  • Certified organic ingredients and no animal testing
  • Two forms: a stick and a fun ball shape
  • Vitamin E and squalene for lip care

Cons:

  • Mint oil actually isn't great for your lips and can cause burning

This brand is focused on flavor, so if you like to lick your lip balm, check out their yummy choices. They use organic and natural ingredients, like this one with tingly mint oil. It also has stevia, a natural sweetener, to make it even more delicious!

While many reviewers like the sensation of mint on their lips, in fact, it can cause a burning feeling and leave them drier. But a lot of them like the feeling and love the taste. They also say it lasts a long time on their lips.

Some Extra Advice on Lip Care

Some Extra Advice on Lip Care

Are you drinking enough water? Chapped, dry or cracked lips can actually be caused by lack of hydration. In addition to drinking it, add water to the air if you live in a dry climate or during the winter. Consider getting a humidifier, or simply hang some wet towels or laundry in your room.

If your lips have a lot of dead skin, we recommend using a lip scrub to exfoliate before using a lip balm. Exfoliation and removal of the dry flakes and dead skin can also help the lip balm penetrate the skin’s protective layer and rebalance it.

Finally, you should make sure not to lick your lips. This can be a hard habit to break for many people, but as your saliva evaporates, it dries your lips out further.

Frequently Asked Questions

We've done some extra research to try and help you get the most out of your lip balm and lipstick.

Should you go for a lip balm to wear under lipstick or over it?

In general, lipstick acts as a pigment on the lips and the balm is the moisturizer that holds the pigment in place. But there is a rule of thumb to follow when you apply both a lip balm and lipstick.

Apply an emollient lip balm that has hydrating properties on your lips before lipstick application if you are applying a hydrating or moisturizing lipstick. If you are applying a long-lasting or matte lipstick, apply the balm beneath the lipstick and on top of the lipstick for extra staying power and hydration.

There are also tinted lip balms that can eliminate the need for multiple products if you’re satisfied with only a bit of color. They moisturize and add a slight tint to your lips, so they're useful on casual days.
