Massage guns are often used by athletes to care for their muscles after hard training. But you might be intimidated when shopping for one, because it's hard to know what kind of effect they have or when to use them. There are also a wide variety of products on the market by companies like Apherma, Opove, and Hyperice, making it difficult to choose the right one for you.
We graded each one on the following criteria:

A massage gun's primary job is to release the tenseness in your muscles so you feel refreshed. We asked three men and women who routinely exercise to try out each massage gun and rate how it felt. Each monitor was allowed to use their own preferred setting for vibration strength. These are the muscle groups we tested.Shoulders and neckBackThighs
How easy it is to use a massage gun is also important when making the decision to buy one. You'll want to find a model that fits comfortably in your hand and hits the muscles you expect it to. So we asked three men and women who regularly work out to rate them based on their ease of use, in particular considering the following points. How easily could it be used on neck and shoulder muscles? How easily could it be used on back muscles? How easily could it be used on thigh muscles? How easy was it to hold?Did the weight feel comfortable?
If you're investing in a massage gun, aim for one that has a decent set of features. For this category we awarded points to products that have numerous helpful features, such as the following.A choice of vibration strength settingsAttachments to cover all muscle groupsCushioned attachments
For people who use their massage gun at home, you'll appreciate one that doesn't make a lot of noise when in use so that you can use it any time of the day. For this test, we used a sound level meter to measure the amount of noise produced by each massage gun set to its highest level while massaging our thigh muscles. Products with a lower volume got higher scores.Extremely quiet: Under 60 decibelsQuiet: 61-65 decibelsSomewhat quiet: 66-69 decibelsAverage level of noise: 70-74 decibelsSlightly loud: 75-79 decibelsLoud: 80-84 decibelsVery loud: Above 85 decibels

You may be wondering if a massage gun can help with your specific issues, or if they even work at all!
Some studies have found that applying vibration directly to your body can help ease muscle stiffness and is beneficial for athletes to sooth their muscles after a hard day of training.
However, other studies weren't able to prove an effect on muscle stiffness, so the science isn't decided yet on whether or not this type of therapy is truly effective.
There still isn't definitive proof that vibration therapy can ease muscle stiffness, but most of our testers reported that applying vibration to tense spots improved their condition. This is why we recommend using vibration on your muscles. In this article we'll introduce the products that gave our testers the best subjective feeling, so use it as a reference when buying a massage gun.
The most important part of using vibration to relax your muscles is simply whether it feels good. In this section we'll explain the correct way to use a massage gun, as well as some precautions.
After a workout and before going to bed are considered the best times for vibration therapy.
Along with stretching, applying vibration after a workout is a good way to help release the tension in your muscles and can prevent soreness.
We also recommend applying vibration 30 to 60 minutes before going to bed. Relieving stress in your muscles has a relaxing effect which helps you get a good night's sleep. Using a massage gun before bed benefits people who feel stiff after sitting down at work all day, not just those with an exercise routine.
Here are the points to remember when choosing the best massage guns.
In this section we'll introduce two important factors to look at when deciding how well a massage gun does its job. These are the points we found make the difference when looking for the one that gives the most comfortable vibrations.
Amplitude refers to the size of the vibration, or simply how much the attachment moves back and forth. Choose a massage gun with an amplitude between 12 and 14.5 millimeters for the best results. During our trials, we found that massage guns with this level of amplitude vibrated gently into our testers' muscles. We received feedback from our testers that massage guns with amplitudes in that range "gently loosened muscle tension" and "penetrated deep into their muscle fiber."
On the other hand, our testers reported that massage guns with an amplitude of 10 millimeters "only vibrated at the surface and couldn't penetrate deeper into muscle." Conversely, when it came to massage guns with amplitudes in the higher range of 16 millimeters, one said, "It was so strong it was painful."
If you're not sure about what amplitude feels best on your body, start with a massage gun with an amplitude between 12 and 14.5 millimeters.
Each person has a different threshold when it comes to how much vibration is a good thing, so it's good to have a wide range of settings for vibration strength. Choose a massage gun with at least six settings so you can adjust it according to your own preference. Massage guns with smaller setting increments have the advantage of being more likely to suit your own preferences for vibration strength.
Our testers said that massage guns with six or more settings were easier to match with the level that felt most comfortable on their muscles. Changing the vibration strength on a massage gun with five or fewer settings produces a noticeable difference, making it more difficult to match the level to your own needs.
Even if the vibration feels good, you won't feel motivated to use your massage gun if it's a chore to get started or hard to apply to the muscle you want. So we'll look at what characteristics make a massage gun easy to use in the next section.
The products we tested came in a variety of shapes and sizes, weighing anywhere between 10 and 35 ounces, but the ones that got our highest evaluations weighed between about one and a quarter to two pounds. Our testers responded that products in this range weren't so heavy as to become a burden and could be held behind their back easily.
But we received a lot of comments saying massage guns over two pounds made the user's arm sore after only a minute or were too heavy to use comfortably. Some people also said the weight made them difficult to use on their lower back, so you should avoid buying one that's needlessly heavy.
There are massage guns that weigh less than a pound, and the lighter weight could be a plus for some people. But our testers tended to say these models couldn't deliver vibration to the deeper part of their muscles and only stopped at the surface.
The massage guns we looked at were one of three shapes: standard, jigsaw, and triangular. We recommend starting with a standard massage gun, as it's the easiest for getting the vibration to dig in exactly where you want it to. Our testers had mostly positive things to say about standard models, notably that they were easy to hold and hit the muscles they wanted, or that they could easily apply the gun to muscles on the back of their body.
But with the jigsaw type, some said the distance from the handle to the head attachment was too far, making it difficult to get the vibration in the right spot. Many of our testers also complained about the difficulty of using triangular types, saying the head attachment couldn't reach their shoulder blades or lower back.
The handles on most standard model massage guns are one and a half to two inches in diameter, and we didn't notice any difference in how comfortable they felt to hold. You probably won't need to worry about grip comfort if you go with a standard massage gun.
Massage guns aren't the quietest devices, and you want to avoid bothering other people or annoying yourself! So pay attention to how loud it is before you buy.
People who plan on using their massage gun at the gym or in an apartment building are probably wondering how much noise they make, particularly if you want to use it early in the morning or at night. Look for one in the 60 to 70 decibel range to avoid bothering people around you.
We found a big difference in the volume made by all the massage guns we looked at, which was anywhere from 64.7 to 84 decibels. For reference, 60 decibels is the volume of a normal conversation, 70 is what you'll hear driving a car on the highway, and 80 decibels is the sound made by an ambulance.
When we tested them, we found that massage guns making around 60 decibels of sound were reasonably quiet and would be safe to use early in the morning or at night. This should be good news for people who work out in the morning or often come back home from work later in the evening.
Massage guns, aside from products approved as medical devices, are not recognized for their massage effectiveness.

Apherma's massage gun gets our highest recommendation for its pleasant delivery of vibration and precise setting increments. It has a display with the current vibration strength setting and remaining battery, so you know what to expect at a glance. When testing the feel of this massage gun, one tester said, "I like that it can deliver vibrations deep into the muscles around my shoulder and collarbone." Another, however, noted that "the vibration couldn't reach deep enough into my thighs." It might not have enough power for people who do heavy leg workouts.
They also had positive things to say about its ease of use, like "The shape made it easy to massage hard-to-reach spots," and "You can massage your lower back while holding it in one hand." The handle is made of slip-resistant material, which also adds to a stress-free massage.
In particular, this model has an extraordinary feature set with 30 vibration strength settings, making fine adjustments possible, and 10 attachments. The wide range of settings make it easy to adjust to each person's preferences and body type. As for volume, this massage gun produced 67.4 decibels at its highest setting, so you can use it at pretty much any time of day without worrying about noise.

Opinions were split on ease of use, with some saying "The sturdy handle and consistent vibration make it easy to massage the spot you want," while others complained that two pounds three ounces was "too heavy to use comfortably for long periods." Those with less upper body strength should take this into consideration.
As for its feature set, this massage gun scored high for its seven attachments. It also has six power levels to choose from, so you can adjust the vibration strength to your liking. But when we tested the noise level, we found it produced a rather loud 75 decibels of sound. It could feasibly go over 80 decibels depending on what part of your body you're using it on, so you'll be better off not using it early in the morning or late at night.

The Mebak 3 massage gun has an LED touch display which lets you change the vibration setting directly on the screen. One tester said, "It left my muscles feeling soothed and gave me just the right amount of stimulus," while another said it "felt similar to being massaged by a real person," so it should fit a wide range of muscle care needs.
In our tests for usability, testers said things like "The handle had a comfortable, easy-to-grip shape," and "The distance from the handle to the head was just right, making it easy to massage my lower back." This model comes with seven attachments, which is a respectable amount of variety. Some of the attachments are made of cushioned material, good for when you want to give yourself a gentle massage. But we found that it was quite loud at 79.1 decibels, so you should be courteous to your neighbors when choosing a time to use it.

This massage gun from FitRx comes with a USB cable for charging, which gives you the advantage of being able to charge away from home. Our testers had good things to say about the level of vibration, reporting that it was "able to stimulate deep areas of my muscles and left them feeling fresh and invigorated." Another noted that "the attachments felt sturdy and didn't cause any pain while massaging."
When testing ease of use, we received the following comments from our testers: "The handle and attachments were structured in such a way to make it easy to massage exactly where I wanted to," and "The size of the handle was just right for getting a sturdy grip." People of all body types will appreciate its user-friendly shape. When grading the feature set, we appreciated that it has six selectable levels of vibration strength, but were disappointed that it only comes with the most basic four attachments and nothing more.
It did a bit better in the noise level department, only registering 69.4 decibels on the highest setting. It could go up over 70 decibels depending on how firmly you press it onto your muscle, so take the time and place into consideration when using it. This is a great choice for people buying their first massage gun due to its easy-to-use shape and gentle vibration.

Dacorm's massage gun has a screen on the body showing the current vibration strength setting and battery level, so you won't be caught off guard. One tester stated, "The minute vibrations felt as if they reached deep into my muscle fibers," and another said, "Overall, it did a good job of relieving muscle tenseness." A couple of people, however, weren't as impressed, saying "It didn't have enough power even on the highest setting."
When grading ease of use, several people said, "The size and material of the handle made it easy to massage the muscle I was aiming at," and overall the response was positive. But a couple of our testers reported that "it was difficult to control the touch screen accurately." People buying their first massage gun or those who aren't so tech-savvy should take that into consideration.
With seven vibration strength settings and 12 attachments, this massage gun scored high on features. At 64.7 decibels, the noise level is also commendably quiet, similar to that of a normal conversation. You can use it freely regardless of the time or place.

Vybe Pro's massage gun has two buttons you can use to raise or lower the vibration strength setting, which we appreciated for the straightforwardness. When testing out how it felt to use, our testers appeared to be pleased with it overall, saying "The subtle vibration went straight to work on the spot I wanted it to," and "The rhythmical vibrations penetrated deep into my muscles."
Unfortunately, many of them reported that "it was too heavy to use comfortably on my back muscles," or "The large size makes it hard to control properly." It's likely your arm will feel tired after holding it for longer than a few minutes.
We gave this massage gun high points for having nine selectable vibration speed settings, and you'll enjoy trying out the eight attachments to test out their various effects on different muscle groups. As for the noise level, it made 79 decibels of sound while in use, which is rather loud. If you're using it at the gym or another place where making some noise isn't an issue, you'll have no problem, but you'll need to take the time of day into account if you live in a dorm or apartment building.

This massage gun from Ekrin is instantly noticeable due to its distinct green color, and contains a high-capacity lithium battery inside. Our testers described this massage gun as "being able to pleasantly stimulate pressure points," and said it could "bring relief to larger muscle groups, in particular the thighs." But at least one person said, "Even the weakest setting was still too much vibration to use comfortably on my shoulders or near the collarbone," so it wouldn't be a good choice for people who want to use it mainly to massage these areas.
When testing ease of use, our testers said, "The handle was just the right size to hold firmly without needing to tighten my grip," and "The angle of the attachment head made it easy to apply vibration to the muscle I wanted." This massage gun landed around the middle in terms of features, with five vibration strength settings. We measured 73 decibels of noise while in use, which is on the high side, so most people wouldn't want to use it during quiet periods of the day.

An LED touch screen showing the current vibration setting and remaining battery makes Toloco's massage gun easy to adjust the settings on. Opinions were split on the quality of its massage power, with some testers saying "I enjoyed the feeling of the vibrations," while others complained that "even the highest setting wasn't enough to get a satisfying massage." People who have been working out for many years and have high muscle mass might feel that the stimulation is lacking.
Unfortunately, we weren't able to give this massage gun high marks in the ease of use category, due to comments like "The slippery handle made it difficult to hold in place," and "The weight made it hard to apply to muscles behind my back." On the bright side, it comes with 15 attachments and has 20 vibration strength settings, so it scored high on features. But when testing the noise level it came out to 72.5 decibels, which isn't notably quiet.

Opove's Apex is unique for its handle, which is curved at 45 degrees. Most of our testers enjoyed the feel of this massage gun, in particular mentioning that "the strength of the vibration didn't take away from the feeling of comfort when using it," and "I felt the vibration dig deep into my muscles." When looking at ease of use, we found the slip-resistant material on the handle was effective, and we had no problem holding it steady for long periods. But a few testers weren't as impressed, saying "The body was larger than I would have preferred," so people with small hands should take note.
This model comes with six attachments, which is sufficient, but it only has five vibration strength settings, which is a bit disappointing. If you have very specific preferences about how strong the vibration should be, it might not be for you. The amount of noise produced by it was also quite noticeable: a whopping 79.2 decibels. You can use it at the gym or outdoors without any trouble, but if you're using it at home you should take the time of day into consideration.

Opove's M3 Pro pushes its durability as a selling point and claims it won't break even after being dropped from a height of six and a half feet. One tester said, "It did a good job of loosening the tenseness in my muscles, and the pulse speed was just right." But some disagreed, saying "It was too strong to use around my shoulders and collarbone, even after lowering the vibration setting, to the point of being painful." So the level of comfort you'll get strongly depends on the muscle group you use it on.
When grading it on ease of use, most testers said, "The size was just right for getting it into a good position for massaging." There's also a healthy distance from the handle to the attachment head, making it easy to use for muscles on the back of your body or in hard to reach spots. As for its feature set, this massage gun comes with a respectable six attachments, some of which are cushioned, but it only has three vibration strength settings.
On top of that, the noise level is also quite noticeable at 74.1 decibels. But with its high power vibrations, people who frequently work large muscle groups like their legs or back may want to keep this one on their radar.

Theragun's PRO massage gun has a rechargeable battery that can be removed from the unit, saving you space when charging. When evaluating how it felt, some testers said, "I appreciated the feeling of relief after using it on my thighs," but one commented "Keeping it on the same spot for a while made it feel like I had been whipped." Even the lowest vibration strength setting is relatively strong, so people who prefer a firm massage will find it useful.
When looking at ease of use, some testers enjoyed that "it had two places where you can hold it, making it easy to use on a variety of muscle groups, including those that are hard to reach." But others had the opinion that "it was too bulky and heavy, which made it difficult to move around or get into position." People with small hands or those with muscle weakness may find it a burden.
This massage gun only has five vibration strength settings, which keeps it from scoring high on features, but the cushioned attachments make up for this. In particular, we appreciated the inclusion of one that combines that shapes of round and flat attachments. But we found it very loud, producing 84 decibels on its highest setting. We wouldn't recommend using it at a time of day when most people are enjoying some peace and quiet.

The Hypervolt Go from Hyperice claims to work for three hours on a single charge. All settings can be adjusted with a single button, so it's a good choice for people buying their first massage gun. We found that it worked well on larger muscles, with our testers saying "The dense, concentrated vibrations it produced made my thigh muscles feel refreshed after use." However, some people expressed that "the vibrations were rough and overbearing," so people who are just getting into fitness may find it too strong.
Opinions on its ease of use were in unison, with testers complaining "It was too heavy and needed two hands to use properly," or "The handle was too thick to hold comfortably." People with poor arm strength would probably have a difficult time with it.
This massage gun wasn't able to score well on features, with only three settings for vibration strength and a lack of any cushioned attachments. The noise level was in the middle range at 70.5 decibels. The high vibration strength means that it could make even more noise when you've got it pressed up against your muscles, so try not to use it during quiet hours.

Theragun's "mini" is small enough to take with you when exercising outdoors or away from home. When testing out the feel, our testers praised it for being "compact, yet powerful," and also said, "It was able to apply vibration deep into both larger and smaller muscle groups." Longtime gym-goers will appreciate its powerful level of stimulus.
But when looking at ease of use, at least one tester said, "The material on the handle was too smooth, which, combined with the weight, resulted in it frequently slipping out of my hands." They also complained that "the attachment head was too close to the handle, making it difficult to use on back muscles." People with smaller hands will probably have a difficult time using it.
This model only comes with the standard round attachment, which means you can't change the way vibrations are delivered for different spots on your body. With only three levels of vibration strength, you may or may not be able to find the one that's just right for you. However, it only produces 68.3 decibels of noise, so you can use it at any time of day even if you live in an apartment complex.

The F5 pocket-sized massager from SKG has a heating device at the bottom of the unit, which allows you to warm your muscles and massage them simultaneously. Some of our testers said, "The vibration strength was lacking even on the highest setting," and "Only the surface of my muscles received stimulation while the deeper parts didn't feel loosened afterward." It didn't have a relaxing effect on any of the muscle groups we tested it with, and its evaluation suffered accordingly.
But when it came to ease of use, most testers appreciated its compact size, saying "It was easy to move around and use on a variety of muscles," so there's the added benefit that you can easily take it with you wherever you go. The feature set was disappointing, with only three vibration strength settings to choose from and the two most basic round and flat attachments. For people who like to customize their massage depending on which muscle group they're working on, it won't get the job done.
But most people will appreciate the low amount of noise it produces: just 65 decibels. You can use it early in the morning or later at night when you come home from the gym. Athletes and exercise enthusiasts who have already built up muscle mass should think twice before buying this massage gun, though, as it probably won't be able to give you the stimulation you're looking for.

For our buying guide, we looked at 14 highly ranked massage guns on popular online stores like Amazon, Walmart and Best Buy. At mybest we define quality massage guns as those with a pleasing effect on muscles, reasonably quiet volume and helpful features.
Taking this into consideration, we evaluated the four following points:
Products we tested
These are the muscle groups we tested.
If you're investing in a massage gun, aim for one that has a decent set of features. For this category we awarded points to products that have numerous helpful features, such as the following.
For people who use their massage gun at home, you'll appreciate one that doesn't make a lot of noise when in use so that you can use it any time of the day. For this test, we used a sound level meter to measure the amount of noise produced by each massage gun set to its highest level while massaging our thigh muscles. Products with a lower volume got higher scores.
Next, we'll explain how to use the four most commonly seen massage gun attachments. Try to use the most appropriate attachment for the muscle group you're targeting.
Massage guns often come with a variety of attachments in addition to the standard round head. Each attachment has its own particular way of applying vibration, so having more options means you're more likely to find just the right one to get the relief you're looking for.
This is the attachment intended for larger muscles like your quads or lumbar muscles, back, hips, arms, or pretty much anywhere on your body. You'll want to take it with you if you plan on using your massage gun on the go.
This one is helpful if you want to massage harder-to-reach places like your triceps or calves. Try it on days you've focused on one specific set of arm or leg muscles at the gym.
The flat attachment applies vibration to a wider area, like your back or thighs. Since it connects with a larger surface of your body, it's good for getting a comprehensive massage.
This attachment is for getting vibration deep into the muscles in your palms or the soles of your feet. We recommend it for general hand and foot care.
