The biggest advantage of using an at-home soda maker is that it can be much cheaper than buying bottled or canned carbonated beverages. Bottled sparkling water costs about $2 per bottle, whereas the cost of producing 500 mL of carbonated water with a soda maker is about $0.14.
Even drinking 500 mL of carbonated water per day, using a soda maker costs about a tenth of the price of buying pre-bottled from a store. Even factoring in the cost of the machine, you will have recouped your expenses after using the soda maker for just two months.
An additional benefit is that using a soda maker reduces plastic bottle waste. Using a reusable bottle dedicated solely to the soda maker allows you to cut down on the space needed for storing multiple bottles and avoid the trouble of disposing of extra waste. Soda makers are a convenient, money-saving item that's also environmentally friendly.
Soda makers can also have added health benefits. Using flavored syrup, you can make a carbonated drink that is lower in calories than commercially available carbonated drinks.
While a typical carbonated drink contains about 200 kcal per 500 mL, carbonated water with the classic flavor syrup sold by SodaStream contains about 120 kcal per 500 mL. There are also non-caloric and sugar-free options available, so it would be a good idea to choose one that suits your lifestyle.
Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Soda Makers.
When choosing a carbonated water maker, it's important whether it can make strong carbonation and is easy to use, isn't it? The soda maker we recommend is the "Terra" by SodaStream. Below, we will introduce how the "Terra" from SodaStream was superior compared to other products.
This product recorded the highest gas volume (GV) among those tested, resulting in a strength exceeding that of commercially sold carbonated water. Compared to commercially available products with around 3.5GV, the 'Terra' from SodaStream has 3.91GV.
In our tests, the lower-ranking products barely contained carbonation, while in some cases, the carbonation disappeared from the moment of consumption. For real carbonation lovers, we highlighted the concentration of gas volume, and how long-lasting the carbonation was for each product to gauge how consistently they could deliver a refreshing drink.
One of the appeals of SodaStream is its abundant proprietary flavor syrups. More than 20 types of syrups are being sold, including ones that can make cola and carbonated orange juice.
Though soda makers are optimized to produce high levels of carbonation, some take more effort than others. Two important points to consider when choosing an easy-to-use soda-making device are how the bottle is installed and how the gas is released.
Some soda makers simply require pushing the bottle into a clear groove in the front of the device, making it easy to remove no matter how much liquid it holds. However, others require a few more steps to install with twisting motions and more specific buttons to push.
Additionally, it's important to check if the gas release after injecting the bottle or receptacle is automatic or manual. As implied, automatic soda makers usually require minimal steps to inject the beverage with gas, while manual ones require a few more steps and close monitoring. Some manual soda makers take more than 10 seconds for the 'hiss' sound to stop after opening the plug, which can feel tedious if you have to do it every day.
For most soda makers, there are two types of devices that help make carbon dioxide gas: cylinders and cartridges. Soda makers that use gas cylinders are best for daily or frequent use since they can be used many times and require less frequent replacements.
However, used cylinders are not typically recyclable through regular household garbage disposal. Fortunately, these types of products usually come with a collection service for the used cylinders, making them easy to manage. You can exchange the cylinder just by ordering online and handing the empty cylinder to the delivery person.
In contrast, soda makers that use gas cartridges require them to be replaced after every time it is used. Being much smaller than the cylinder soda makers, these products are a good option for those who use them only occasionally or prefer them for their more compact size for better storage. Its smaller size makes it far more portable than cylinder soda makers and is ideal for outdoor activities like camping and barbeques.
The cartridge type costs about $0.3 per 500mL, while the cylinder type costs about $0.14, another benefit is being able to keep the price down.
When looking for a soda maker that’s easy to maintain and operate, it’s important to note how easy it is to install the gas cylinder. Some soda makers have cylinders that can be inserted from the back of the machine, making it easy to install while leaving the main body in place.
On the other hand, some soda makers have cylinders that need to be set from below the machine, requiring you to lift the main body and support it during each exchange, which can be cumbersome.
There might be people who think, "I want something that can carbonate not only water but also juice and alcohol." Such people might want to consider DrinkMate's 'Carbonated Beverage Maker without CO2 Cylinder.'
A major advantage of soda makers like DinkMate's is the ability to carbonate drinks other than water. For example, you can convert wine into sparkling wine or add carbonation to your usual juice, carbonate a beer that's gone flat! Although it may not match the flavor or foam quality of freshly poured beer, you can still enjoy a delicious beer while recouping some of its freshness.
Upon testing DrinkMate's soda maker's strength of the gas volume, it fell slightly short of SodaStream's "Terra". However, we were able to create a carbonation stronger than commercially available products.
We were also able to create strong carbonation when adding carbon dioxide to orange juice and wine, so if you want to carbonate drinks other than water, Drinkmate would be the only choice.
The downside of this product is that it requires manual gas release, and installation of the bottle requires inserting and turning, which can be inconvenient.
However, since it's a cylinder type, it requires less effort to change the gas, and it can produce strong carbonation, so it can be said that it has the basic specifications.

At the top of our list is the "Terra" by SodaStream. This model increases carbonation intensity each time the plate on the top of the machine is pressed.
Following the instructions from the manufacturer to press the gas release five times, we made a strong carbonated water that recorded 3.91GV, a level stronger than commercially available carbonated beverages in PET bottles. Our taste testers noted that this model produced a strong fizz that spread throughout the mouth and bubbles that popped sharply, giving every beverage they tasted a refreshing texture.
Setting up the bottle was easy, requiring just a simple push of the cylinder into the front of the machine. The gas is automatically released after removing the bottle, making the operation simple. The gas cylinders were also easy to install just by lowering the lever.
For this model, cylinders cannot be disposed of as household trash, but there is a waste collection service. By ordering parts online and handing the used cylinders to the courier or putting them in your mailbox, you can conveniently exchange your gas cylinders for new ones. It's also possible to bring them into a store for collection.
This product does not require a power source due to its manual operation, so you won't have trouble finding a place for it. Overall, this model proved to have the best ability to make strong carbonated water, making it the best pick for those purchasing a soda maker for the first time.

The "Art" by SodaStream boasts a design that is both functional and sleek, being the only model with a lever to control the carbonation level manually.
After pushing the level five times, our testers were able to create carbonated water with a strong intensity of 3.68GV. With its large, crackling bubbles, it offers an excellent long-lasting tingling sensation, offering a carbonation level beyond that of commercially available carbonated seltzer waters and beverages.
This model was also extremely easy to use. Just push the bottle in and push, and you can set the cylinder just by lowering the lever. The carbonation is infused by lowering the lever. The more times the lever is lowered, the stronger the carbonation. With its lever configuration, this model doesn't require as much effort as the models that inject gas with a button, making it easier to handle. This model could be a good option if you value convenience.
Although they cannot be discarded as household trash, the used cylinders can be disposed of by using a pick-up collection service or bringing them into a store.
This product not only produces strong carbonation but also is easy to operate. The lever type doesn't require much effort compared to injecting gas with a button, making it easier to handle. Therefore, it could be a good option if you value convenience.

The "E-Duo" by SodaStream has won the "Red Dot Design Award," one of the world's most prestigious product design prizes and, in addition to a traditional plastic bottle, it comes with a glass bottle, making it more sustainable and eco-friendly than most models.
In our tests, we recorded a carbonation intensity of 3.25GV. While this is initially a relatively strong level of carbonation, the samples showed the carbonation quickly dissipates after finishing the beverage. However, the carbonation was strong at the start, so overall we rated it as a solid performer in this category.
The bottle is set by putting it into the silver flask and securing a locking mechanism from above. The operation is simple, but it's worth noting that our testers had to apply some force to lock it. However, compared to the type of cylinder that hangs on the main body, this model has no concern about water leaking out during the carbonation process.
The used gas cylinders cannot be disposed of as household waste but can be exchanged for new ones through a pick-up collection service, saving customers the hassle of purchasing them in-store.
The ability to automatically adjust the carbonation level is a benefit. Unlike manual models, where the strength of the carbonation changes depending on how long you press the button, with this model you can consistently get the same strength of carbonation every time. This one is also easy to use for beginners, as you only need to press the button once.

Though the used gas cylinders cannot be disposed of as household trash, there is a convenient pick-up waste collection service and an option to bring them to designated shops for disposal.
While the quality of the drinks and overall versatility make this model attractive, it received lower ratings due to its poor usability. The bottle installation required some extra attention to secure it firmly, and the manual gas release made it time-consuming to open the cap and wait until the hissing sound subsided.
The difficulty in adjusting the carbonation level is also a drawback. While many products change their strength based on the number of times the button is pressed, this product changes its strength based on the number of seconds. You'll need to control it in 0.1-second increments, which could take some time to get used to.

Sparkel's "Beverage System" allows you to automatically adjust the carbonation level up to five levels simply by pressing a button located on the top of the unit, making it one of the most user-friendly models. It is also compatible with drinks other than water and is advertised as being able to create original beverages.
This product’s easy waste disposal and bottle installation make it an appealing option. The bag containing citric acid and baking soda can be disposed of as household waste. Moreover, the bottle only needs to be placed in the designated spot, with no need to push or turn anything to secure it in place.
However, this product did receive low ratings for weak carbonation. Even when our testers made carbonated water at the highest level of the five stages recommended by the manufacturer, the carbonation strength was subpar at 2.78GV. During tasting, the testers felt the stimulation of large bubbles for a moment, but the carbonation disappeared immediately. It is also concerning that while many products complete gas injection in 5-10 seconds, this product took 4 minutes.
The product’s operation process, while straightforward, is a little tedious. Carbonation requires putting water in the tank at the back, adding powdered citric acid and baking soda from the top, and pressing a switch. Each use requires adding the powder, which could be a bit of a hassle.

The "Sodamaker Classic 1060" from iSi boasts a stylish, retro design that can compliment any kitchen or bar as a piece of decor in addition to being a practical appliance.
This model uses gas cartridges, rather than cylinders, and can be disposed of as household waste after use, which is an added benefit. However, the downside of this type of configuration is the hassle of needing to change the cartridge after every use, making it less sustainable than other models.
When making carbonated water, our testers recorded a carbonation strength of 2.57GV, which is weak in comparison to several of the other, more modern products available. During the taste test, there was a slight feel of carbonation, but the bubbly sensation was short-lived. Achieving strong carbonation with this product is challenging.
There are also aspects of this product that make it difficult to use. After inserting the cartridge, it requires the user to shake the main body by hand more than five times to add carbonation. This makes it hard to adjust the level of carbonation because it can’t be monitored without disrupting the process. The fact that you can't remove the bottle cap and thus can't clean the inside is also a concern.

At mybest, we define the best soda maker as a product that can easily make delicious, strong carbonated water while keeping the hassle of gas treatment to a minimum.
To find the product that fits this description, we collected six popular soda makers, including the latest models available at Amazon, Walmart, Target, and other popular retailers, and examined them in the following three categories.
Products we tested
Our standard for high carbonation includes the ability to produce a drink that is stronger than commercially available carbonated beverages, and bubbles that last even after a whole day.
Fill each product bottle with water at 5±1℃ and place it in the main unit. Follow the manufacturer's official instructions to make the strongest carbonated water possible, and measure the strength (gas volume) of the carbonation with a carbonation meter. Products with a carbonation strength greater than 3.5GV of commercially available products were recommended, and we scored them based on the degree of recommendation.
Gas volume refers to the unit used to indicate the amount of carbon dioxide gas contained in carbonated beverages. For example, if 3L of carbon dioxide gas are dissolved in 1L of carbonated water, it is 3GV (gas volume).
The testers checked each product on the following points and converted the level of recommendation for each product into a score.
The testers checked each product for their cylinder or cartridge replacement process based on the following checklist.
