9 Best Scooters for Kids [Tested and Reviewed]

Children's kick scooters offer a fantastic way for kids to stay active and enjoy the outdoors while building their balance. These scooters come in a variety of styles and features, from scooters with seats for added comfort to ones with cool light-up tires that make riding even more exciting. They provide a fun and healthy way for kids to explore their surroundings while staying active and engaged.

However, it can be confusing to choose the right one, especially with options designed for children as young as two or three years old. So, if you are in the market for a kick scooter designed for children, where do you begin, and what features should you look for (or avoid?) After plenty of rigorous testing, the team at mybest is here with the answer.

Scooters for Children 2-3 Years Old

A Three-Wheeled One With Stability and Curve Control Is Perfect for Small Children

A Three-Wheeled One With Stability and Curve Control Is Perfect for Small Children

For children aged 2-3 who are trying a scooter for the first time, we recommend a three-wheeled scooter. These scooters have two front wheels, providing stability and reducing the risk of tipping over. The handle's range of motion is narrower compared to a two-wheeler, and it offers responsive curve control, minimizing the chances of dangerous operating errors.

Additionally, within the category of three-wheeled scooters, you can find products like 5-in-1 and 2-in-1 scooters that allow both standing and sitting, adding versatility to the experience. Even children who may struggle with balance will find these scooters easy to ride.

For children who are still developing their balance and coordination, we recommend opting for a 5-in-1 or 2-in-1 scooter.

Pro Scooter Rider and Instructor
Nick Leinberger

I recommend starting to ride a scooter between the ages of 2 and 5.

This can provide several benefits, including:

  • Improved Balance Sense: Riding a scooter enhances balance skills by requiring adjustments to maintain equilibrium.
  • Enhanced Physical Strength: Scooter riding is a full-body exercise that engages muscles in the legs, arms, and core, leading to improved physical strength.
  • Enjoyable Exercise: It's a fun activity that provides fitness benefits, making it suitable for children who may not excel in traditional sports.

How to Choose Scooters for Kids

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Scooters for Kids.

1

Two Points to Check For Stability

To properly enjoy riding a scooter, it's first important to stabilize your form. The following are product features to look out for that are less likely to disrupt your form.

A Rough Anti-Slip Coating For a Reliable Grip

A Rough Anti-Slip Coating For a Reliable Grip

We recommend scooters with deck surfaces that feature a rough, anti-slip finish similar to sandpaper. This textured surface provides excellent traction, reducing the risk of slipping while riding. During our tests, products with rough decks, including those with bumps and dips, gave riders a strong sense of stability, as they felt securely connected to the soles of their feet, minimizing the chances of accidents.

Scooters with only embossed patterns on the deck tend to slide around on the soles of the feet and can be slippery, especially for children who may not have developed proper balance and weight distribution skills yet. This slipperiness poses a potential risk of falling. To ensure better balance and weight distribution, we recommend choosing scooters with decks featuring a rough, anti-slip surface.

Rubber Handles With a Stopper

Rubber Handles With a Stopper

When it comes to handlebars, we strongly recommend those with round stoppers at the ends, as they effectively prevent even small children's hands from slipping. Handles equipped with round stoppers offer a secure grip by preventing your hand from sliding off the handle sideways while riding.

Scooters without stoppers on the handles can pose an added risk if the rider's hands are not securely gripping the handlebars. This is particularly important for children aged 2 to 5, who tend to unintentionally accelerate. To ensure stability and control while riding, it's crucial to choose scooters with handles that are easy to grip firmly with both hands.

Yui Maeno
Personal Trainer; Head of Fitness & Baby at mybest
Yui Maeno

Handles made of rubber are preferable over plastic ones as they provide a more secure grip and are less likely to slip from your hands.

2

Flat Wheels Allow for Smooth Driving Even On Bumpy Roads

When it comes to scooter tires, they can either be flat or rounded. Flat tires, with their large contact surface with the ground, offer stability even on rough terrain like gravel or steps. They are less prone to tipping over and can navigate bumpy roads smoothly while maintaining balance.

Rounded wheels have less contact with the ground, making them less stable on uneven surfaces. They may wobble when riding on rough roads, and inexperienced riders, especially children, may struggle to maintain balance while taking turns. So, it's important to consider the type of tires based on your child's riding experience.

3

Handle Is Adjustable, Accommodating Child's Growth

Scooters equipped with adjustable handle heights can be customized to accommodate a child's growth, ensuring they can use the scooter for an extended period. In our review, we identified products that offer 3-4 height adjustment levels. The more levels available, the longer the product remains suitable as your child grows, making these options highly recommended.

It's worth noting that some scooters offer a sliding mechanism for handle height adjustment, allowing you to position it precisely to your liking. If you prefer a scooter that offers this flexibility for a perfect fit, be sure to explore these options.

Yui Maeno
Personal Trainer; Head of Fitness & Baby at mybest
Yui Maeno

Adjustable handle heights on scooters ensure extended usability for a single user over time. Additionally, in households with multiple siblings, they can tailor the handle height to their liking and share a single scooter. This not only eliminates the need to purchase multiple scooters but also proves to be a cost-effective choice for families.

4

Light-up Wheels Provide Visibility at Night

Many children's scooters are available with light-up wheels, adding some flair and delight to the riding experience. These illuminated wheels not only amp up the fun for kids but also offer the practical advantage of increased visibility, especially for riding in low-light conditions. While on the surface, these features may only seem like aesthetics, they actually offer added peace of mind for parents while improving safety for the rider.

mybest's Top Choice: Flat Tire Shape and Anti-Slip Technology

What we loved

  • Durable frame
  • Stable flat tires

What we didn't love

  • On the heavy side (7.05 lbs)
  • Not very compact when folded

The Jupiter Mini 3-Wheel Light Up Scooter from Jetson Electric Bikes is designed for kids aged 3 and up and stands out for its durable frame construction.

Thanks to its flat-shaped tires, this scooter offers smooth and stable rides even on uneven roads. The anti-slip deck ensures a firm grip and reduces the risk of slipping. Additionally, its one-touch folding capability makes it compact and easy to carry with just one hand. The scooter's handle height features three adjustable settings so that your child can continue to use it as they grow.

However, it's worth noting that the scooter weighs 7.05 pounds, which may be a bit heavy for young children to carry on their own, requiring the help of a parent or nearby adult.

Overall, it's a top choice for kids, providing a smooth and stable riding experience for beginners while remaining conveniently portable.

Great on Bumpy Roads, Suitable for 2 Year Olds

What we loved

  • Adjustable handle height
  • Great stability on bumpy roads

What we didn't love

  • Best used while seated
  • No anti-slip deck coating

Skidee's Y200 Kick Scooters for Kids is suitable for children aged two and up and offers the option to use it with or without the included seat.

Thanks to its flat-shaped tires, this scooter provides stability even on uneven roads. The round stopper at the end of the handle reduces the risk of hand slippage. Additionally, the handle's height can be adjusted in three stages, ensuring continued use as your child grows.

However, it's important to note that the deck lacks an anti-slip coating, which may increase the risk of slipping. This scooter is recommended for those who prefer to start by using it while seated and gradually transition to standing.

Adjustable Handles and Compact Folding

What we loved

  • Light-up tires
  • Anti-slip stoppers and adjustable handles

What we didn't love

  • Rounded wheels
  • Slippery deck surface

The Mini Deluxe LED by Micro Mobility Systems is designed for children aged two and up, and features a lower deck height, which is perfect for kids trying out riding for the first time.

This scooter boasts a round stopper on the end of the handle that prevents small hands from accidentally slipping, as well as adjustable handlebar height for long-term use.

This scooter features light-up LED tires that run without batteries—great for parents and exciting for children. However, be wary of the uneven deck surface, which can be slippery.

Secure Grip With Adjustment For Multiple Heights

What we loved

  • Very lightweight
  • Great for siblings to share

What we didn't love

  • Not great for bumpy rides
  • Does not fold

The K5 Three-Wheel Scooter for Kids from SWAGTRON is perfect for toddlers with robust durability with scratch-resistant materials. Its rubber round stopper on the handle ensures a secure grip, even if your little one gets a bit enthusiastic. Weighing just 5.07 pounds, it's incredibly lightweight, making it easy for kids to carry. Plus, the adjustable handles feature four settings so that this scooter can grow with your child. This scooter is a great choice when you want a scooter that can be shared among siblings.

However, bear in mind that the deck has some irregularities that may lead to slipping, especially during fast rides. The round tire shape might also make it less suitable for rough terrain.

Easy to Grip, but Slippery

What we loved

  • Can be used while seated
  • Light-up tires increase visibility

What we didn't love

  • Plastic deck is prone to slipping
  • Can’t be folded

LaScoota's Sit N' Scoot is designed for kids aged three and up with the ability to ride while seated — great for kids who may quickly lose interest.

The handle features a round stopper that prevents accidental slips, and its rubber material provides a secure grip. However, the plastic surface of the deck is a bit slippery and uneven, which could lead to feet slipping during operation. Additionally, the round tires may result in a bumpy ride on rough roads. It's worth noting that this scooter can't be folded, so disassembling the handle and deck is necessary for transportation.

This scooter is great for kids who are still working on their balance, especially if you're looking for one with a seated option.

Handles Secure Grip, but Riding Feels Wobbly

What we loved

  • Lightweight, easy to carry
  • 4 adjustable heights

What we didn't love

  • Slippery plastic deck
  • Likely to feel impacts more

Kicksy's Kids Scooter is designed for children aged two and up, featuring an aluminum handlebar that's lightweight and easy to carry. The handle itself is made of rubber material and includes a round stopper at the end to prevent children's hands from slipping. Plus, the handle height features three adjustable profiles that allow the scooter to grow with your child.

However, the deck surface is made of bumpy plastic, which is prone to slipping. This scooter’s round tires are not well suited to high speeds and curves and may leave children feeling unsteady while riding. To get the best use out of this scooter, we recommend it for children with a strong grip.

Easy to Grip, but Not Adjustable

What we loved

  • Lightweight
  • Secure grips
  • Bonus: Comes with a helmet!

What we didn't love

  • Only one handle height
  • Deck surface is too smooth

The HALO jr. 3 Wheel Scooter from HALO Rise Above is designed for children aged two and up and includes a blue helmet, which is a nice bonus at this low price point. Round stoppers on the end of the handles provide a secure grip for children. And it’s lightweight to boot, weighing only 3.74 pounds.

However, a drawback is the inability to adjust the handle's height, which, down the road, will force children into awkward postures as they grow taller. This scooter may not be suitable for long-term use, requiring replacement as your child grows. The deck surface is almost entirely smooth, which makes for a slippery ride, especially at fast speeds. Consider testing whether your child can handle it before purchase.

Can Be Used in Two Ways, but the Handle Can’t Be Height-Adjusted

What we loved

  • Features a unique appearance
  • Two riding modes

What we didn't love

  • Cannot adjust handle height
  • Uneven deck surface

The Highwaykick 1 by Scoot & Ride is designed for children as young as one year old, offering two riding modes with its handlebar that doubles as a seat for added versatility. However, the handle's round stopper, made of plastic, can be slippery, so we recommend purchasing a separate non-slip grip for better control, which can be a solid downside at this price point.

One drawback is the fixed handle height, which doesn’t suit growing children well nor make great use for households with multiple children. The uneven deck surface also poses a risk of foot slipping during use. Additionally, the scooter cannot be folded and requires the handle to first be removed if you’re looking for compact storage. We recommend starting with a floor chair to get accustomed to the scooter.

Lightweight, Affordable, but Slippery

What we loved

  • Low cost
  • Lightweight

What we didn't love

  • Slippery deck
  • No stoppers on handles

The My 1st Scooter Sport by Radio Flyer is designed for children aged two and up, featuring a larger deck for easy foot placement. With a weight of only 4.51 pounds, it's lightweight enough for a child to carry with ease. However, it's important to note that the scooter cannot be folded, so removing the handle before transporting is recommended.

On the downside, the deck surface is nearly flat with minimal textured processing, increasing the risk of slipping if not stepped on firmly while in motion. The handle lacks a round stopper, which may lead to hand slippage, especially if the grip is weak. The handle height is also not adjustable, which limits its long-term usefulness.

For children starting to use it at the age of two or three, close supervision is advised to prevent tipping over during use.

What Scooter Accessories Should I Purchase?

Helmets Are Mandatory! Elbow Pads and Knee Pads Provide Added Safety

Helmets Are Mandatory! Elbow Pads and Knee Pads Provide Added Safety

Whether a child is learning to ride or has some experience under their belt, a helmet is a must-have and is critical for preventing life-threatening injuries. The type of helmet matters too! So, when you’re shopping for an appropriate scooter helmet, make sure to compare the benefits of each product as it relates to your child’s needs.

To further reduce the risk of injury, especially if your child will be riding on rough and uneven surfaces, we recommend investing in some knee and elbow pads to ensure your child is fully protected.
