Pet cameras optimize the way you monitor your pet while away from home. However, many may wonder what features make it worth the purchase over other camera types.
Pet cameras show you a live feed of your home, but that’s not all they can do. Some products can send a notification to your phone when your pet whines or it detects something is wrong. Many products record videos, so you can look back at what your pet was doing during the day.
Some products go even further with specialized features for your pet. Treat tossers to play with your pet, and 24/7 chat access to veterinarians make these cameras stand out from others on the market. A pet camera with these features might further your peace of mind when a pet sitter is unavailable.
Some brands tout their pet cameras as lightweight models (weighing 3 to 7 ounces). These may tip over if your pet bumps into them, so we recommend placing them high on a shelf or securing them with tape.
Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Pet Cameras.
If you’re buying a pet camera, it’s important to make sure that you can see your pet clearly. We tested each camera by recording a stuffed dog in motion and asked five pet-loving testers to evaluate the image quality.
Pet cameras don't compare to a high-definition TV, but choosing a model that displays a clear image lets you check on your pet with ease. Low resolution is not just disappointing from a quality perspective, but it also prevents you from seeing your pet’s expression or movements due to excessive motion blurring. Since we consider video quality crucial for pet cameras, we put it at the forefront of our testing.
In our tests, results between products varied considerably. This difference in results carried over even between products of the same resolution. Other than the resolution displayed by the maker, there isn't another spec to tell how good the video quality will be. However, through our tests, we found the pet cameras that lived up to the resolution they claimed to be.
The eufy Pet Dog Camera and Wyze Cam v3 check the box for video quality. In particular, the eufy Pet Dog Camera was able to capture the contours and fur of the dog even in dark areas, whereas other products struggled to produce more than a vague silhouette. It also displays colors naturally to help you get an accurate idea of what’s happening. If you are sometimes away from home in the afternoon and at night, this model is your best bet.
While the Wyze Cam v3 isn’t built for capturing dark areas, it excels in well-lit rooms. Its top-class resolution lets you see your pet down to its individual hairs. It also isn’t prone to motion blur, which makes it a great choice if your pet is highly active and moves around a lot. If you plan to use your pet camera in a well-lit room most of the time, this model may be worth it.
Not all pet cameras can capture an entire room. Cameras with a wide-angle lens and wide swivel range will keep your pet in view most of the time by reducing blind spots.
Some of us have energetic pets that will move to every corner of a room. A wide-angle lens captures a whole room to keep your active pets on screen. We found that, among the products we tested, angle width varied greatly, so choosing a model that gives you the widest angle is important.
Pets who huddle up in the corners of a room can be tricky to monitor. Finding a pet camera that can swivel will increase your range of view for a room. Pet cameras with this feature, in addition to a wide-angle lens, will eliminate blind spots and save you from worrying about what your pet is up to.
The eufy Pet Dog Camera D605 was the only product we tested with a wide-angle lens and the ability to swivel. While many products we looked at have a lens angle of less than 100 degrees, eufy's camera can capture about 120 degrees. Additionally, it can rotate 270 degrees, so there’s almost no part of the room it can’t see. Your pet will have a tough time hiding from you with this camera's expansive field of view.
You may be worried that your pet isn’t eating or relieving themselves while you are away from home. The spot registration feature solves this problem and is especially helpful if you’re taking care of a young pet or one that has health issues.
Spot registration allows you to designate a specific area, and when your pet enters the area, the camera can send a notification to your phone or start recording automatically. If you set it up to monitor their food bowl or potty mat, you can get a good idea of when they eat or use the bathroom.
Food-motivated pets won't be sad to see you go if they can expect a treat while you're away. Pet cameras with treat dispensers are a great way to keep pets on their paws when home alone.
While treat tossers sound convenient for dispensing food while away from home, it is only meant for small treats. It can hold treats about 0.2 to 0.8 inches in size and can store about one to five pieces. While this can't serve a dog or cat a whole bowl of food, it works well for pets who are used to treats throughout the day. Check out automatic pet feeders if you're interested in feeding your pet while away from home.
While treat tossers can’t take the place of automatic feeders, it does let you play with your pet by offering a reward. When you get a break from working, you can connect with your pet via the camera, which for us pet owners, will brighten our day. If you love taking pictures of your pet, you'll be pleased to find out that you can get adorable close-ups of your friend.
Treat tossers can be a new experience for both you and your pet. We recommend practicing using it at home with your pet so they won't be startled by it while you're away.
Some models include a voice function that projects your voice from the cameras when you speak into your smartphone. As with any new pet toy or equipment, without proper introduction and acclimation, the pets may be startled when things are activated.
If you see that your pet is in distress (via the camera function), it's time to pull back on usage and take time to introduce them to the item and functions. Continued practice with the camera is necessary to get the pet comfortable with it.

What we didn't:
The eufy Pet Dog Camera D605 has great resolution, a user-friendly app, and plenty of features to monitor and interact with your pet. You can save the videos and screenshots you take on the 16GB internal storage of the camera. This camera will show your pet clearly in both well-lit and dark spaces, making it a great fit for pet owners who are out in both the afternoon and evening. Motion blur and blind spots are not a concern for this camera. It has an outstanding 110-degree field of view and can swivel 270 degrees horizontally.
eufy's camera also makes it easy to monitor your pet's habits throughout the day visually—with spot registration and audibly—with sound detection for barking or whining. The camera also provides interactive features like treat dispensing to keep both you and your pet entertained. It's as easy as tapping an icon and then pulling down on the screen to launch a treat. This pet camera is designed to enhance the experience of monitoring your pet which makes it a solid choice for pet owners.

The eufy S220 Indoor Cam delivers a high-quality video feed straight to your phone. For owners who are out during the day, this camera will give you a detailed image of your pet during the day. In well-lit areas, you can see a cat or dog's fur and facial expressions clearly. Our testers noted that the video feed looks a little dark, which makes it hard to use in darker spaces. We like that this camera allows for horizontal and vertical swiveling, but it takes some time to get the perfect angle.
This camera doesn't come with pet-specific features like eufy's Pet Dog Camera D605. It does come with security features like an alarm button you can press in the app. Our testers liked that you could synchronize an activity zone that detects motion so you can check on your pet's eating and potty habits with ease. The app also allows you to toggle the microphone and speaker. You can save any recordings on an SD card up to 128GB or on cloud storage which comes at an additional cost.

What we didn't:
The Petcube Bites 2 Lite takes a pet owner's interest to heart with clear image quality and great features for monitoring your pet. Testers noted that the video feed gave a detailed image of the subject and was even good enough to use in dark spaces. The one concern they had about visual quality was the colors being a little dull and unnatural. The field of view is impressive at 120 degrees, which makes up for the inability to swivel the camera direction.
This pet camera comes with an interactive app that our testers rated positively. It notably can connect users to a veterinarian for 24/7 chat access through a subscription. Along with this subscription, you also have the ability to set up automatic recording triggered by motion or noise detection. Recordings and daily videos can be saved to a premium cloud service. The built-in treat tosser that is usable via the app is interactive for both the pet and owner alike. If you're okay with signing up for the subscription, this camera is great for keeping up with your pet.

The Blink Mini Pan-Tilt Camera is designed to operate as a security camera or baby monitor. However, it is popularly used as a pet camera, according to reviews on Amazon. Our testers noted that the video feed made it hard to see a pet's details and expressions. One tester said, "The colors were a bit subdued, which made the entire image appear dull." Since this camera isn't optimized to view pets, we think its image falls flat. We were impressed with its ability to swivel 350 degrees horizontally and 110 degrees vertically.
Blink's camera doesn't come with the bells and whistles like pet cameras, but it's enough to check on your pet. You can register an activity zone through the app to monitor your pet at specified places. The app allows you to record, toggle the microphone, and adjust the camera position. All recordings can be saved with the paid subscription service, or you can use a separate storage module to save videos. While this camera lacks interactive features, it isn't a bad choice for anyone looking to check on their pet from time to time.

The 360° Dog Camera from Furbo comes with pet-specific features but falls short in terms of resolution. Most of our testers reported that the image quality of the video feed wasn't suited for larger rooms as subjects at a distance didn't appear clear. Additionally, the color is somewhat dark and unnatural, but blurring isn't an issue. If you plan to use this camera in a small room, it should be okay as it has a wide field of view at 100 degrees and can swivel 360 degrees horizontally.
In terms of features, this camera has noise detection and will send phone notifications. This is great if you are concerned about how loud your pet is while you're gone. It doesn't have motion detection or activity zone registration, so this model may not be the best choice if you are looking to better monitor your pet. You can save videos if you subscribe to the premium cloud service through the app. Furbo's camera also comes with a built-in treat launcher which our testers said they enjoyed using.

The Wyze Cam v3 has impressive image quality but lacks in other areas. According to our testers, it displayed the stuffed dog we used in clear detail, even at a distance. However, not much could be seen in a dark room. With a narrow field of view of only 90 degrees and no swiveling function, the camera has many blind spots. If you frequently leave home at night or need to monitor larger rooms, this camera may not be the best choice for you.
While Wyze's camera lacks pet-specific features, it does have noise and motion detection. If you want to monitor a small space of a room, you can set up an activity zone. The app is also easy to navigate, with an intuitive layout where you can take screenshots, record videos, and control the microphone. Any videos you record can be either stored on an SD card or through the premium cloud storage service.

Gped's Baby Monitor 360° Wireless 5G Nanny Cam didn't perform well in our image quality tests. Testers said the video feed had low quality in both well-lit and dark rooms. We did appreciate that the camera can swivel both horizontally and vertically (355 degrees and 110 degrees, respectively). However, the lens' 80-degree field of view means you will have to adjust the camera frequently if you have a large room or an active pet.
Since it was designed as a security camera and baby monitor, it doesn't have pet-specific features for treats or pet sound detection. It does support activity zone registration to monitor your pet's eating and bathroom habits. With the app, you can take videos, snap screenshots, and adjust the image settings while viewing the feed in the app. The illustrated icons in the app's layout make it easy to navigate.

The Blink Mini isn't optimized for monitoring pets, but it's enough to check up on your cat or dog. The image quality is flat overall, even in well-lit rooms. In dark rooms, you can only make out a pet's silhouette due to overexposure. The narrow 80-degree field of view and not being able to swivel also set this camera back behind other models.
Blink's camera lacks a lot of the features most pet cameras have, but it can register activity zones to monitor your pet's habits. Our testers noted that the app is simple and easy to use since it doesn't have many features. To store videos, you can use an internal storage module or subscribe to a premium cloud service.
