How to Choose Grills

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Grills.

1

Electric or Gas Models Offer Easy Operation With a Single Switch

Ease-of-use is one of the most important factors when choosing a barbecue grill. Gas and electric grills can light with just a switch, like operating the stove at home. For those who prioritize ease and would rather focus on the party than fussing with a grill, our team recommends an electric or gas grill.

Charcoal grills are rather labor-intensive. Starting the fire, adjusting heat, and cleaning up are all tedious tasks, making it an unfavorable choice for busy parties and events where the focus is on spending time with others—not maintaining a grill.

Whether it's slowly grilling a steak on charcoal or searing a hamburger at high heat with gas, the right grill allows you to customize your cooking style.

The affordability of charcoal models makes it an attractive option for individuals who prioritize cost in their decision-making process.

BBQ Easily with a Range of Features

BBQ Easily with a Range of Features

If you love hosting backyard barbecues, consider the Stainless Smart Propane/Natural Gas Grill" by Monument or Weber's GENESIS EX-335 Smart Gas Grill.

Both of these gas grills are super user-friendly, starting up with just the flip of a switch, and packed with features that simplify the cooking process. Plus, their generous grilling space means you can cook up a feast for the entire family in no time at all.

If you're having trouble deciding, rest assured that you'll be making a great choice with either option.

One of the standout features of these two grills is their compatibility with a mobile app, which allows you to quickly check the temperature without having to remember previous settings. This seamless integration makes it easy to manage delicate temperature adjustments, ensuring your grilled dishes turn out perfectly every time.

Four Features for Easier Cooking

Four Features for Easier Cooking

When it comes to user-friendly barbecue grills, four features stand out for making the grilling experience both enjoyable and effortless.

The first is the inclusion of a built-in warming rack. This handy feature lets you keep your meat perfectly warm without the risk of overcooking or letting it cool down, ensuring your dishes remain deliciously tender.

The second essential feature is a built-in thermometer. This tool is crucial for precise temperature control, enabling slow cooking at low heat and ensuring your meat retains its juicy flavor.

Thirdly, a built-in side table is a game-changer. It offers a convenient space for your grilling tools, plates, and even a spot to rest your drink. This means you can serve your freshly grilled delights straight to the table while enjoying a cold beer.

Lastly, additional cooking space beyond the grill itself, such as an area for making sauces, can elevate your barbecue to the next level. With the ability to whip up your own sauces right beside the grill, you can add a personal touch to your barbecue that pre-made sauces simply can't match.

Both the top two ranked barbecue grills come equipped with all these features, which significantly contributes to their high ratings and ease of use.

Large Grills Allow for Cooking Multiple Meats

Large Grills Allow for Cooking Multiple Meats

Another critical aspect to consider when choosing a barbecue grill is whether it offers ample cooking space to grill large quantities of meat simultaneously. The ideal grill for those looking to host gatherings should be able to comfortably cater to a group, for instance, preparing enough meat for four people in one go.

A good rule of thumb for determining the necessary cooking space is to allot 120 square inches per person. This much space lets you grill at least a hamburger patty, a hotdog, a couple of shrimp, and your choice of a piece of chicken, steak, or small cut of ribs. Therefore, for a family of four, you'd be looking for a grill that offers at least 480 square inches of cooking area.

The top-rated barbecue grills we recommend boast over 500 square inches of cooking space, ensuring you can serve up a feast for your family or friends without anyone having to wait. This spaciousness allows for a diverse menu, accommodating everything from pork ribs and steaks to chicken, shrimp, sausages, and hamburgers, all at once.

Conversely, grills with limited cooking areas fall short in party scenarios. Their constrained space means only a small amount of meat can be grilled at any one time, prolonging the cooking process and potentially leaving your guests hungry for longer.

Shinkuro Tateoka

For those who enjoy large gatherings, the best choice is a grill with 867 square inches of cooking area. This allows you to satisfy everyone's appetite, even in big parties. Just remember the guideline of about 120 square inches per person to best accommodate your usual crowd. This large grilling surface can easily handle the needs of even the most sizeable family functions.

Stainless Steel Makes a Great Choice for Gardens

Stainless Steel Makes a Great Choice for Gardens

The grill's stainless steel construction is a major plus, especially for those who prefer to keep their barbecue in the garden. Stainless steel's resistance to rust ensures a longer lifespan, even when exposed to moisture, making it a durable option for outdoor cooking.

In contrast, grills made from regular steel are prone to rust when wet, leading to potential issues like a sticky lid and requiring regular maintenance to prevent rust, which can be a hassle.

Both our top-rated grills are crafted from stainless steel, offering robust protection against rain. The top pick even includes a cover, while a cover for the second-place product can be bought separately, which is great for keeping dust at bay.

For added protection, especially for steel grills, consider using a vinyl sheet as a makeshift rain cover. This simple addition can significantly extend the life of your grill by shielding it from the elements.

For Campers, Coleman Is Our Top Pick

For Campers, Coleman Is Our Top Pick

For camping enthusiasts who love to grill, the Coleman RoadTrip 285 Portable Stand-Up Propane Grill is an excellent choice.

Its portability is a standout feature; the grill can be folded up and wheeled around like a suitcase, thanks to its thick handles and wheels. At 41 lbs, it's lightweight enough to be comfortably carried by one person and easily fits into a car, offering convenience for travelers. Additionally, its fuel efficiency is notable - it operates on a single gas cylinder, simplifying fuel transport.

Plus, you can repurpose the gas cylinder from your oil lantern or gas burner, making it a versatile and eco-friendly option for outdoor cooking.

3

For Indoor Use, We Recommend Compact, Electric Models

For Indoor Use, We Recommend Compact, Electric Models

For those looking to enjoy barbecue flavors without stepping outside, the Char-Broil TRU-Infrared Electric Grill is a perfect indoor solution. Its compact design means it won't hog space, fitting neatly into a kitchen corner without being obtrusive.

The convenience of electric grilling is another plus—just flip a switch, and you're ready to cook, much like using a hot plate. And because it doesn't involve open flames, it offers a safer cooking experience compared to gas or charcoal grills, reducing the risk of indoor fires. This grill allows for a hassle-free and safe way to enjoy grilling, regardless of the weather or outdoor space constraints.

mybest's Top Choice: Simple to Operate with a Large Surface Area

What we loved

  • Gas operation
  • Side tables for extra space
  • Large cooking surface

What we didn't love

  • Lack of built-in storage

The Monument Denali 605 Stainless Smart Propane/Natural Gas Grill offers a unique and efficient grilling experience, akin to a versatile outdoor kitchen unit.

Its gas operation simplifies cooking, and it boasts convenient features like side tables for extra space, warming racks to keep food at the perfect temperature, and a dual-cooking area for simultaneous meat grilling and sauce preparation. An innovative addition is the ability to monitor temperatures via a mobile app, enhancing your grilling precision.

While gas grills necessitate the initial purchase and installation of a gas cartridge, their cleanup is notably straightforward—simply remove the cartridge. The grill's components are easily disassembled for cleaning, though the absence of built-in storage for grilling tools might require some creative solutions.

With a generous 627 square inches of cooking space, it's ideal for hosting large gatherings. Its stainless steel construction ensures durability and resistance to rust, and it includes a rain cover for added protection.

For those who love to entertain, this grill is a practical and high-quality choice, making it our mybest Top Pick.

Simple Operation with a Smaller Cooking Area

What we loved

  • Four independent burners

What we didn't love

  • Smaller surface area
  • Lack of built-in storage

The NEXGRILL 4-Burner Propane Gas Grill with Side Burner X-Large 720-0925P offers convenience with its four independent burners and gas fueling, avoiding the need for constant refueling. It features a side table and warming rack for organizing ingredients and keeping food warm, plus a built-in thermometer for temperature control. The grill's dual cooking areas enable simultaneous grilling and sauce-making, enhancing the cooking experience.

Though initial setup requires obtaining and installing a gas cylinder, cleanup is simplified thanks to easily removable parts. However, the absence of a built-in storage rack may require creative storage solutions for utensils and accessories.

A Convenient Gas Stove, but Small in Size

What we loved

  • Includes side tables, a warming rack, and a tong stand
  • Solid durability

What we didn't love

  • Small surface area
  • Lacks a storage rack

The Weber Spirit E-310 Gas Grill (Liquid Propane) 46510001 is a testament to Weber's barbecue heritage, featuring a prominently displayed Weber logo on its dial.

This grill uses gas, eliminating the need for mid-cooking refills and streamlining the cooking process. It includes side tables and a tong stand for convenient meal preparation, along with a warming rack and built-in thermometer to keep food warm and monitor the grill's temperature.

Though it boasts the ease of gas fueling—requiring pre-purchase and installation of a gas cylinder—cleanup is straightforward due to the detachable gas cylinder and disassemblable dirty parts, simplifying maintenance. However, it lacks a storage rack for utensils and gloves, which might require alternative storage solutions during use.

With a cooking area of 415 square inches, it's on the smaller side, ideally serving up to three people. This could be a limitation for larger gatherings. The grill's stainless steel construction enhances its durability, offering resistance to weather and rust, ensuring a long-lasting grilling companion.

Small, but Versatile

What we loved

  • Great for low-heat cooking
  • Easy to break apart and clean

What we didn't love

  • Lack of storage for tons, gloves, and more

Founded in 1948, the Char-Broil "Performance Series Convective 4-Burner Grill" is recognized for its sleek stainless steel design and practical features.

Using gas as fuel, it simplifies the cooking process by eliminating the need to constantly replenish charcoal, making grilling more efficient and less labor-intensive. It includes a side table and warming rack, providing convenient spaces for preparing ingredients and keeping cooked food warm. The built-in thermometer aids in monitoring and adjusting temperatures for perfect low-heat cooking. Additionally, the grill offers dual cooking areas, allowing for simultaneous grilling and sauce preparation, enhancing the overall barbecue experience.

Though purchasing and installing the gas canister is required, the grill is designed for easy cleanup, with removable parts that can be easily washed. However, the absence of a storage rack for utensils like tongs and gloves could be a drawback for some.

The cooking surface is somewhat limited at 400 square inches, suitable for preparing meals for up to three people at a time, which might be a consideration for larger gatherings. Made from stainless steel, the grill is built to withstand the elements, offering durability and resistance to rust, ensuring it remains a part of your outdoor cooking arsenal for years to come.

Gas and Charcoal Capabilities with a Large Surface Area

What we loved

  • Alternate between gas and charcoal
  • On-board thermometer
  • Three unique cooking spaces

What we didn't love

  • Lower durability than other grills
  • No bottom storage rack

Char-Griller's Double Play 3-Burner Gas and Charcoal Grill offers the versatility to switch between gas and charcoal fuel, catering to various cooking preferences while reducing the hassle associated with charcoal refueling. This grill is designed for convenience, featuring side tables for prep work, warming racks to keep food at the ideal temperature, and tong holders for easy access during cooking. A built-in thermometer ensures precise temperature control for perfect grilling outcomes.

The grill boasts three cooking areas, offering ample space to grill meats, prepare sauces, or smoke dishes simultaneously, enhancing the overall barbecue experience. However, the charcoal use does require extra effort in moving the mesh for coal refills, which some might find inconvenient.

Cleanup varies with the fuel type; gas usage allows for straightforward cylinder removal, whereas charcoal necessitates lifting the fire pit, adding a step to the process. The lack of a built-in storage rack for utensils and accessories is a notable drawback, requiring users to find alternative storage solutions.

With a generous 867 square inches of cooking space, this grill is ideal for hosting large gatherings, capable of cooking significant amounts of food at once. However, its steel construction may be susceptible to rust if not properly protected from the elements, which could impact its longevity.

Easy Electric Model Great for Two People

What we loved

  • Careful temperature control
  • Wheels make it easy to move

What we didn't love

  • Lack of a side table
  • Small cooking area

Char-Broil's TRU-Infrared Electric Grill, established in 1948, stands out with its electric fuel source and eye-catching vibrant blue color.

This electric grill simplifies the cooking process, eliminating the need for fuel refills. It features a warming rack and a designated spot for tongs, enhancing the grilling experience. Additionally, the built-in thermometer facilitates precise low-temperature cooking and effective heat management. However, the absence of a side table may make organizing ingredients and utensils challenging.

The grill's electric design ensures straightforward setup and cleanup—just plug it in to start and wash the plates after unplugging. Its components are easily disassembled for cleaning, further simplifying maintenance. The inclusion of a storage rack at the base is a thoughtful addition, providing convenient storage for gloves and tongs.

With a cooking area of 246 square inches, it's best suited for small servings, making it less ideal for larger family gatherings. The stainless steel construction offers durability, rain resistance, and rust prevention.

Equipped with wheels, the grill is relatively mobile, but its 37 lbs weight may make transport and storage somewhat challenging, despite its compact dimensions of 18 inches in width and 24 inches in depth.

A Large Cooking Area with Troublesome Charcoal

What we loved

  • Warming rack and side table
  • Easy to clean, but a messy process

What we didn't love

  • Requires constant refilling of charcoal
  • Limited air intake

The Char-Griller "Smokin 'Champ Charcoal Grill Offset Smoker" stands out for its integrated small smoker, enhancing its appeal for barbecue enthusiasts.

Its design includes a convenient side table and tongs holder, reducing the hassle of managing utensils and ingredients while cooking. The addition of a warming rack and a thermometer is also beneficial for maintaining food temperature and managing the grill's heat accurately. However, being a charcoal grill, it requires regular charcoal refilling, which can be tedious due to the necessity of moving the grate each time. Additionally, the lack of an air intake lever complicates the control of airflow.

The ability to disassemble parts for cleaning is a significant advantage, simplifying post-barbecue cleanup. Yet, the charcoal operation involves dealing with charcoal and ash, which adds to the cleanup process and makes setup less straightforward.

Boasting a generous cooking area of 679 square inches, this grill is ideal for gatherings with friends and family, allowing for ample food preparation space. However, its steel construction is susceptible to rust when exposed to the elements, raising concerns about its long-term durability.

Perfect for Two People Camping

What we loved

  • Made from durable stainless steel
  • Small size, but portable

What we didn't love

  • Difficult to clean

The Coleman RoadTrip 285 Portable Stand-Up Propane Grill, from Newell Brands, is a foldable, portable grill ideal for camping enthusiasts.

Utilizing propane gas for fuel, it offers the convenience of hassle-free cooking with no need for refueling. Equipped with features like a side table, tong holder, and built-in thermometer, it enhances the outdoor cooking experience, although the lack of a warming rack means food should be consumed quickly after grilling.

Its design focuses on ease of use, from setup to cooking, but cleaning can be slightly cumbersome due to non-detachable parts, and the absence of a storage rack necessitates alternative arrangements for utensils and accessories.

Despite its small cooking area of 312 square inches, suitable for feeding up to two people, the grill's stainless steel construction ensures durability and resistance to weather elements, making it a reliable companion for small-group camping. The compact design when folded, measuring 39 inches in width, makes it car-friendly, although its weight of 41 lbs may require some effort to transport.

The RoadTrip 285 stands out for its portability and ease of movement, thanks to its suitcase-like folding mechanism, offering a practical solution for campers in search of a high-quality grill. Its balance of convenience, functionality, and durability makes it a noteworthy option for outdoor cooking adventures.

Easy to Use Charcoal Grill, but Small

What we loved

  • Easy to clean with a pull-out fire bed

What we didn't love

  • Necessary to replenish charcoal during cooking
  • Prone to rusting

The Expert Grill Heavy Duty 24-Inch Charcoal Grill introduces a practical feature allowing the grilling rack to be lifted with a handle for easy access.

Designed for charcoal use, it offers a refill hole for convenient charcoal replenishment, a notable improvement over traditional charcoal grills. Equipped with a side table, intake lever, warming rack, tong stand, and thermometer, it aims to facilitate a seamless cooking experience. However, igniting charcoal at each refill can be time-consuming.

Cleaning is simplified with disassemblable parts and a pull-out fire bed, easing the removal of charcoal and ash. Yet, the maintenance of charcoal grills generally demands more effort than their gas counterparts, especially when it comes to ash disposal.

The grill provides a cooking area of 345 square inches, catering to small gatherings by serving two people at a time. Its steel construction, while sturdy, is prone to rust if exposed to moisture, so protective measures are advised to extend its lifespan. This grill blends functionality with ease of use, making it a solid choice for enthusiasts preferring the authentic taste and experience of charcoal grilling.

Small Area with Troublesome Charcoal

What we loved

  • Features side table and two cooking spaces even at its small size
  • Made from durable stainless steel

What we didn't love

  • Lacks an air intake leveler and thermometer

Royal Gourmet's '30-Inch Charcoal Barrel Grill with Offset Smoker' is a versatile outdoor cooking solution that combines traditional charcoal grilling with the convenience of modern design. The addition of three S-hooks on the side table enhances storage options, making it easier to keep grilling tools and accessories within reach.

Designed for charcoal use, this grill features a replenishment hole that simplifies the process of adding more charcoal, a standout ease-of-use feature for charcoal grilling enthusiasts. The grill is equipped with a variety of convenient features including a side table, roasting grill, tongs holder, and a heat-preserving rack to keep food warm. It also boasts two cooking spaces, allowing for extensive cooking options. However, the absence of an air intake lever and thermometer might complicate temperature control and monitoring.

Maintenance is made simpler with detachable parts that are easy to clean, though managing charcoal and ash cleanup remains a consideration.

With a cooking area of 421 square inches, this grill is best suited for small to medium gatherings, capable of serving up to three people at a time. Its stainless steel construction offers resistance to rain and rust, ensuring longevity and durability in various outdoor conditions.

This grill is a solid choice for those seeking a balance between the authentic flavor of charcoal grilling and the convenience of modern features.

Durable, but Difficult to Cook With

What we loved

  • Ultra portable
  • Great for smaller meals

What we didn't love

  • Must purchase fuel
  • Will require a dedicated place for storage

Cuisinart's Professional Gas Grill features a compact and durable stainless steel design with short legs, suited for gas grilling without the need for constant fuel replenishment. Despite its efficiency, the grill's lack of a side table, warming rack, and tong station may limit convenience during use, offering just a single space for grilling.

Setup involves purchasing and installing a gas cylinder, but cleanup is facilitated by removable parts for easy washing, though the absence of a storage rack for utensils is a notable drawback.

With a modest cooking area of 265 square inches, it's best suited for small meals, accommodating enough food for two. Its construction is robust, resistant to weather and rust, but at 22 lbs and lacking wheels, its portability is somewhat restricted.

This grill is a balance of durability and practicality, tailored for those prioritizing simplicity and quality in their outdoor cooking experiences.

Simple, Assembly-Style Setup, but Small

What we loved

  • Rust-proof and water-resistant
  • Great for small meals

What we didn't love

  • Requires carrying
  • Requires some assembly

The George Foreman Outdoor 12+ Serving Domed Electric Grill, by Empower Brands, features a unique dome-shaped design with adjustable legs, catering to diverse outdoor setups.

Its electric operation allows for effortless cooking with just a push of a button, though it lacks amenities like side tables and warming racks. The grill's ease of cleaning, with disassemblable parts, is a highlight, offset by the initial time investment needed for leg assembly.

Despite its compact cooking area of 204 square inches, challenging for meals for two, its stainless steel build is robust, weather-resistant, and rustproof. Its design is both compact for storage and light at 15 lbs, yet the absence of wheels may require manual carrying.

This grill combines a distinctive design with the convenience of electric grilling, making it a standout choice for smaller gatherings.

Nothing Stand-Out, Difficult to Cook On

What we loved

  • Straightforward, simple design may appeal to some
  • Popular for backyard gatherings
  • Has wheels for added portability

What we didn't love

  • Lacks the appeal of many others on this list
  • A little inconvenient to move
  • Small grill

Weber's "Original Kettle 22-Inch Charcoal Grill" is a staple at many backyard barbecues, yet it's pretty standard when compared to more feature-rich options.

Requiring charcoal, it adds the extra task of replenishing fuel and moving the grate to add more, which isn't the most convenient. It also misses out on helpful features like a side table and warming rack, making it a bit tricky to manage food and control cooking temperatures.

Cleaning is straightforward, thanks to parts that come apart easily, and there's some storage space underneath for grilling tools. However, cleaning up charcoal and ash is a bit of a hassle, especially with a non-removable fire bowl.

With a cooking surface suited for three people, it's not the best choice for larger gatherings. Its aluminum build avoids rust but can be prone to damage under pressure.

Despite having wheels for mobility, its size and 26 lbs weight make it less portable than smaller grills. In essence, Weber's Original Kettle Grill does the job for small, casual cookouts but lacks the convenience and features of its more sophisticated counterparts.

Small and Compact, but Charcoal

What we loved

  • Eye-catching with a small footprint
  • Incredibly portable

What we didn't love

  • Requires constant fuel management
  • Better suited to solo outings

The Cuisinart 14" Portable Charcoal Grill, with its eye-catching red lid, is a neat little option for those who love to grill on the go.

Powered by charcoal, it does mean you'll have to keep adding fuel and adjust the grill rack to do so, which might slow down your cooking momentum. It also skips on extras like a side table and thermometer, so managing your grilling space and cooking temperatures can be a bit trickier.

However, the grill's design allows for easy cleanup since you can take it apart to wash, and it comes with a handy storage rack. But, be ready to put in some elbow grease for charcoal and ash cleanup.

The grill's small size, with just 148 square inches of cooking area, really limits it to single-serving meals, making it perfect for solo outings rather than big gatherings.

Its steel build might not stand up to the elements indefinitely, so keep an eye on wear and tear. But at 14 inches across and weighing just 3 lbs, it's incredibly portable, easily fitting in your car for those impromptu picnics or beach barbecues. Despite its limitations, this Cuisinart grill is a solid pick for individuals or small spaces, blending style with simplicity.

The Secret to Cooking Delicious Meat?

The Secret to Cooking Delicious Meat?

The secret to perfectly grilled meat lies in the 70/30 rule: dedicate 70% of your grilling time to one side of the meat and the remaining 30% to the other side. This method helps seal in the juices and flavors, resulting in more delicious meat. Remember, for thicker cuts, it's also crucial to properly grill the sides

Our Tips for Barbecue Grill Maintenance

Our Tips for Barbecue Grill Maintenance

To ensure your barbecue grill remains in top condition for years to come, implementing proper care routines is essential. Here are some universal tips applicable to all grill types:

  • Clean Regularly: Always clean your grill after each use. Doing so while it's still warm is easiest and prepares it for its next use.

  • Vinegar as a Cleaner: Distilled white vinegar is an effective cleaning solution. It's a safer alternative to chemical cleaners, which require thorough rinsing to remove potentially harmful residues.

  • Grease Management: Use a simple setup, like a clay flower pot lined with foil, for collecting grease. Mix the grease with baking soda, let it cool, then dispose of it easily, avoiding the need for specialized containers.

  • Protect from the Elements: For outdoor grills, either cover them or store them in a sheltered area to prolong their lifespan.

Gas Grills:

  • Regularly clean burner covers/shields and drip pans to prevent pest attraction.

  • Seasonally inspect hose connections and burners to ensure safety.

Electric Grills:

  • Clean drip pans after every use to avoid stubborn residue build-up.

  • Regularly check for exposed wires and maintain wire coverings to keep the grill functioning safely.

Charcoal Grills:

  • Clean grills frequently. Small grills, in particular, should be cleaned after every use.

  • Use a metal pan or clay pot with a lid for ash disposal to prevent corrosion and fire hazards from moist ash.

  • It's crucial to thoroughly clean charcoal grills after each use, especially smaller models, to maintain them in good condition and ensure safe operation.
