You might know that using a humidifier can prevent dryness, but you may not be aware of the other features of these appliances. We’ll explain more about the benefits of owning a humidifier below.
When it’s cold and the air is dry, it’s common to wake up with dry skin or a sore throat. A humidifier can help alleviate these irritants by adding moisture to the air.
Viruses such as COVID-19 and influenza thrive not only in dry environments but also in humid, damp conditions.
It's important to maintain indoor humidity levels between 30 and 50%. This degree of moisture in the air not only helps prevent dryness of the throat and skin but also effectively fights against viruses.
Humidifiers are effective for combating dryness, but if used incorrectly, they can potentially harm your health. Read on to learn about how to use humidifiers to improve your health.
When using a humidifier, it is essential to make sure you replace the water inside the machine regularly and that you clean and maintain it often.
When we used the same water for five days, just adding more when the levels went down, our testing revealed the presence of bacteria in most of the humidifiers.
If you use a humidifier without changing the water, bacteria, and fungi can proliferate in the tank and may be released as mist. Inhaling dirty mist can lead to health problems such as influenza and serious infections.
To prevent the growth of bacteria, follow the manufacturer's instructions to regularly change the water and clean the tank and unit.
Not sure whether a cool mist or warm mist humidifier is a smarter purchase? To find which one is best for you, read on to learn about why you might prefer one model over the other.
Cool mist and warm mist humidifiers have some things in common. Their power to humidify a space is about the same with both types of machines. But there are some differences when it comes to safety and cost. For that reason, we recommend cool mist or hybrid types.
Warm mist humidifiers heat the water to hotter temperatures, so in households with children, we recommend choosing a cool mist humidifier for safety reasons.
For this guide, we evaluated each humidifier based on its actual maximum humidification amount, electricity cost, ease of maintenance, usability, and more. If you're not sure what humidifier is best for you, we recommend you check out our rankings and reviews of each humidifier.
When purchasing a humidifier, the most important factor is its humidification capacity. During our testing, we operated each humidifier and calculated their maximum humidification volume per hour.
When we analyzed the results, we noticed a discrepancy between the actual humidification volume and the manufacturers' stated volume. If you want to effectively humidify a room, we recommend humidifiers with an actual maximum humidification volume of more than 200 milliliters per hour (mL/h), a measure of a humidifier’s output.
A humidification rate of 200 mL/h can increase the humidity of a typical bedroom at a temperature of 68°F from 20% to 30% in one hour. If you’re worried about dry air, simply operating a humidifier can quickly adjust the air to a comfortable humidity level.
Conversely, if the humidification rate falls below 200mL/h, not only will it take the humidifier longer to add moisture to the air, but the humidifier also may add sufficient moisture to the air. That’s because the amount of moisture lost due to the exchange of air is less than the amount of humidification.
In daily life, a certain amount of moisture is lost when you open and close windows and doors, and because of ventilation fans and heating systems.
So it’s essential to choose a humidifier with a high humidification rate to counteract everyday dryness. In particular, our testing showed that the Levoit LV600S Smart Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier had the highest humidification rate among the products we evaluated, exceeding 350mL/h. So if you have a large room or open the windows often, this humidifier would be a good choice.
If you want to prevent the spread of airborne viruses, it's important to maintain humidity between 30-50%. However, it can be difficult to maintain this range by just operating a humidifier.
That’s because the room may gradually become too humid. To avoid this problem, it's important to choose a humidifier equipped with an automatic mode that can respond to fluctuations in a room’s level of humidity.
In automatic mode, a humidifier measures the indoor humidity and automatically adjusts the amount of humidification based on that. For example, if you initially set the humidity to 50%, the humidifier will then maintain it around 50%. The majority of humidifiers equipped with automatic mode maintained the humidity within ±10% of 50%.
By using the automatic mode, you can maintain a comfortable level of humidity without any additional effort once you've set it up.
If the humidity is too high, it promotes the growth of mild mold and fungi, and if it's too low, it can cause dryness and bleeding in the nose or dryness of the skin.
So if your humidifier doesn’t have an automatic mode, you may need to manually adjust the output based on the outdoor climate and the humidity level in the room.
When the air is cold and dry, it's common to run a humidifier all day long. As a result, the water can run out quickly, and keeping the humidifier filled can be a chore. To make the experience more user-friendly, take these points into consideration.
To make water replenishment easier, the key is to reduce how often you need to refill your humidifier. To do this, it’s crucial to determine whether the humidifier can operate continuously for a long period of time. You can figure that out by finding out the tank capacity of the humidifier and how much it actually humidifies the air.
We recommend a humidifier that can humidify continuously for more than 24 hours. With one of these models, if you refill the humidifier in the morning, you don’t need to refill it again during the day or before going to bed, and it can keep humidifying continuously.
That said, you don’t want a machine that can operate too long with a large tank of water. If the humidifier can operate continuously for more than 36 hours, it could result in health concerns. That's because water needs to be replaced regularly to prevent bacterial growth.
To make water replacement easy, look at the handle and the method of water replenishment when considering which humidifier to purchase. If the tank has a handle, you can easily carry it from the sink. And if you can add water to the top of the humidifier, keeping it replenished with water can be as easy as watering plants.
These humidifiers have another important difference as well: one is hybrid and the other is cool mist.
If you want to warm the air inside your home during the chill of winter, we recommend the versatile LV600S Smart Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier.
Although cleanliness is essential for humidifiers, daily maintenance can be enough of a chore that some people stop using them. We’ll explain below how to make keeping your humidifier in good working order less of an onerous task.
Not interested in cleaning your humidifier every day? With these tips and If you’re willing to pay a bit more for electricity, you can streamline the process.
Choose a tank with a wide opening: By choosing a humidifier with a tank opening that’s wider than 2.5 inches in diameter, you can reach your hand inside the tank for easy cleaning.
If you plan to use a humidifier in your bedroom, it's important to know whether it operates quietly. If the humidifier is loud, you’ll have trouble getting to sleep.
When we operated the humidifier in its most powerful mode, the noise level at a distance of 3 feet from the main unit was an average of 33.5 dB. Considering that the sound of typing is between 40-60dB, that’s quiet for a home appliance.
The WHO guidelines for community noise recommend less than 30 A-weighted decibels (dB(A)) for bedrooms at night. So if you plan to run a humidifier next to your bed, we recommend you choose a quiet humidifier that operates below 30 dB.

The LV600S Smart Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier from Levoit can effectively humidify an entire living room quickly. Another attractive feature is that you can easily operate it with your smartphone or your voice using the VeSync app.
This humidifier stands out for its ability to maintain humidity and the ease of water supply and drainage. When we tested it using automatic mode for 30 minutes, it maintained the target humidity of 50% within an error of 5%. So you can count on this humidifier to maintain a comfortable humidity level on its own. In addition, you can check the amount of water in the tank from the outside, and you can supply water from the top of the main body by removing the lid, so it’s easy to replenish the water supply without having to move the tank.
This humidifier earned high marks for its ability to humidify a room and its user-friendliness. The humidification amount was 365 mL/h, which was the highest among the humidifiers we tested for this guide. Additionally, the tank is designed with a handle that you can easily carry in one hand. And this hybrid model can supply both warm and cold moisture, which should help keep you warm in the colder months.
Our only concern is that electricity consumption was higher than others on this list. When we operated it at maximum hot water mist output, the monthly electricity bill was about $4.50, which is slightly higher than other models. However, the LV600S Smart Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier is a best-buy humidifier that we highly recommend for use in the living room and bedroom, as it provides sufficient humidification and is easy to operate with an automatic mode.

The Classic 300S Ultrasonic Smart Humidifier from Levoit is an economical humidifier that costs just $0.72 per month in electricity, even if you use it every day. Similar to the LV600S Smart Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier, this product also features an automatic mode and can be linked with a smartphone app.
The top selling points are its humidification capacity of 255 mL/h and the automatic mode. The humidification capacity is the second highest on our list, just behind the LV600S Smart Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier. The automatic mode is also quite accurate, maintaining within 10% of the set humidity during 30 minutes of operation. If you set the humidity to 50% in the living room or bedroom, you should be able to maintain a comfortable humidity level.
In addition, you can operate this humidifier by using a smartphone app even while you're out., Or you can operate hands-free if you connect to Alexa or Google Assistant. This device doesn’t come with a humidifying filter, which is a plus as it would require extra maintenance, but it was somewhat tedious to clean the tray.
Considering the performance, ease of use, and cost-effectiveness of this humidifier, the Classic 300S Ultrasonic Smart Humidifier can be said to be an excellent product. If you don't need warm mist or a handle on the tank, you'll likely be satisfied if you choose this humidifier, as you’ll save on electricity costs and price.

Westinghouse's 28-inch Cool Mist Ultrasonic Tower Humidifier allows you to adjust the level of humidity with a simple dial operation. At about 30 inches tall, you won’t need to bend over to refill it.
This humidifier doesn’t come with an automatic mode, but its humidification capability is impressive. In our tests, we recorded a minimum humidification rate of 66.9mL/h and a maximum of 199mL/h. Operation is manual, but you can choose from a wide range of settings, allowing you to adjust to the humidity in any room. Another attractive feature is the low power consumption, making it economical with an approximate monthly electricity cost of only 57 cents.
On the other hand, this humidifier isn’t very user-friendly. You can't see the water level from the outside, so you have to open the lid to see when you need to refill it. In addition, the tank is 18.4 inches tall, which might make it difficult to refill it in the sink. If you're filling it up to full with a cup of water, you might need to fetch water multiple times.
Overall, this humidifier performs excellently, but there is room for improvement in its usability. Since it costs more than $100, if you don’t like the design or size, we recommend choosing another option.

Dreo's Humidifier HM311 is a compact humidifier that stands 10 inches high and can be placed on a table. It costs around $40, so it’s significantly cheaper than the top three products.
After using distilled water and running this humidifier for a week, we observed no mold growth and very little bacteria. The tank is designed so you can reach inside it, so it’s easy to clean. Plus, this humidifier comes with a cleaning brush to reach the crevices of the tray. In addition, refilling the water is easy, and since you add water at the top, you don’t have to remove the tank. Even if you want to add the maximum amount of water, this humidifier is compact enough that you can just move it to the sink to replenish the water.
On the other hand, this humidifier didn’t perform as well t in terms of humidifying power and convenience. The humidification amount of 170mL/h is significantly less than that of higher-ranking products. While that humidification capability may be sufficient for a small room, it may not adequately cover a larger room. In addition, this humidifier does not come with a timer function or a remote control, so you’ll have to place it somewhere easily accessible, like a side table, for easy operation.
Given that this model’s humidifying power is not very high, it won’t likely have much effect in large rooms like living rooms, but this humidifier would be quite effective in small rooms like bedrooms or a home office, where its compact size allows you to put it on your desk.

Venta's LW25 Original Humidifier is a relatively expensive humidifier, costing more than $300. However, it is a convenient product as you can refill it with tap water, eliminating the need to buy distilled or purified water.
The humidification capacity for this model is 288mL/h, which helps justify the price. This humidifier also stands out for its resistance to mold. Even after operating continuously for five days, only a minimal amount of bacteria were able to grow. In addition, the tank capacity is very large at 2 gallons, which allows for about 36 hours of continuous operation in strong mode. This means you don’t have to refill this humidifier as often, another advantage.
Despite its high price, though, this humidifier’s functionality is relatively simple. There are only three humidity levels, and it does not come with a timer function or remote control function. Also, you cannot tell how much water is left unless you open the lid, so this humidifier is not very user-friendly.
Overall, this product’s humidifying performance is sufficient, and it's easy to keep clean, though its usability is not great. This humidifier would be good for people who prefer not to buy or prepare distilled or purified water for the humidifier.

Vornado's EVDC300 Energy Smart Evaporative Humidifier is an evaporative humidifier equipped with an automatic humidity adjustment feature. It features an energy-efficient DC motor, which makes it extremely economical with a monthly electricity cost of just 7 cents.
When set to 50% auto mode, this humidifier reached 30-40% in about 3 minutes, then maintained a stable humidity. This machine detects a room's humidity and adjusts it before it reaches the set 50%, so you may want to set the desired humidity 5% higher to reach the level you want.
On the other hand, this humidifier was high maintenance and loud. In addition, because this appliance has a humidifying filter that collects dirt easily, you should follow the instructions in the manual and replace the water every 8 hours. Plus, the operational noise averages 44.1dB in Lo mode and 48.3dB in Hi mode, so this humidifier isn’t the best option for the bedroom or other quiet environments. Finally, the maximum humidification amount is not very high at 122mL/h, so this model likely won’t sufficiently humidify the air in a large room.
The cost of the electricity required to run this humidifier is very economical, but this humidifier’s overall rating is low because it’s high maintenance and loud. So even though this humidifier comes with an automatic mode and is low-cost, we recommend you choose a higher-ranked product.

The MistAire Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier from Pure Enrichment has a cute design resembling a droplet. At less than 10 inches tall, it is compact and suitable for use on a desk.
The selling points of this humidifier are that it prevents mold growth and has low power consumption. Even after running continuously for five days, we observed no mold growth, and the bacterial count was far lower compared to other products. The power consumption is as low as 0.012kWh per hour, and the monthly electricity bill is a mere 43 cents.
On the other hand, this humidifier is not as powerful as other models and can be inconvenient to use. At 137mL/h, the humidification amount is less than half of what more powerful humidifiers do, so it’s time-consuming to humidify large rooms. Also, this model only has two modes, Hi and Lo, and the lack of useful features such as a timer makes it difficult to customize settings.
For the best humidification and functionality, we recommend you choose the comparably priced top-performing Dreo humidifier instead.

The Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier uses warm mist to humidify moderately sized rooms. Its downside is that it uses significantly more electricity to heat the water compared to cool mist models.
The power consumption of this humidifier per hour is 0.264kWh, which means that if you operate it for 8 hours every day for a month, it will cost about $9.50 for electricity. Considering that humidifiers generate less than $1 a month in electricity bills, this model lost points for cost performance. In addition, this humidifier releases hot steam, so you need to be careful when you use it near children or pets.
The humidification capacity is 267mL/h, which can effectively humidify a bedroom in a relatively short time. However, this humidifier doesn’t have an automatic mode, so you’ll need to manually adjust it to maintain a certain level of humidity. In addition, this warm mist humidifier boils water but does not prevent the proliferation of bacteria. While we didn’t observe any mold growth, this humidifier did encourage the proliferation of germs.
Despite this humidifier’s high power and low price of around $40, your electricity bills will add up. If you use it every day for 6 months, the overall cost exceeds that of the Levoit LV600S Smart Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier. If you plan to keep your humidifier running all the time or intend to use it for two to three years or more, a higher-end product will ultimately be more cost-effective.

The Warm Steam Vaporizer from Vicks is priced at approximately $29, making it one of the least expensive humidifiers on the market. It starts up immediately as soon as it's plugged into the wall outlet.
The standout feature of this humidifier is how easy it is to maintain. You can rinse and wipe clean both the tank and steam unit for simple maintenance. With no extra parts, you can clean this humidifier in as little as 5 minutes. We recommend this humidifier for people who don’t like the hassle of maintaining one.
That said, the humidification level is relatively low at an average of 96mL/h, and the electricity bill amounts to about $4 per month. In addition, this humidifier releases hot steam at 120°F, so it's essential to make sure that you place this humidifier out of reach of children.
Our testers gave the Warm Steam Vaporizer high praise for its easy maintenance and cleanliness, but you might be concerned about its low humidification power and high electricity cost. Still, this model might be worth considering for those who don't use humidifiers very often and are looking for a simple, easy-to-maintain model.

Safety 1st's 360° Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier releases mist from two outlets, one of which rotates 360°. While this humidifier is quite affordable at around $33, it lacks powerful humidifying capability.
The highest-rated aspect of the humidifier during our testing was the low electricity cost. The monthly electricity bill was very economical at about 57 cents. However, as the humidification amount is less than half of the higher-ranked products at 71mL/h, this humidifier may not meet your needs.
This model is also somewhat difficult to maintain. The tank opening is approximately 1.7 inches, which is narrow and cannot be scrubbed clean with a sponge. In addition, the included tray has many small bumps and crevices, making it easy for scale and bacteria to build up, so careful cleaning is essential.
The main appeal of this humidifier is its low cost. However, by increasing your budget by about $7, you could buy Dreo's Humidifier HM311 and likely be much more satisfied with your purchase.

The Cool Mist Humidifier from AquaOasis is a compact product that measures 4 inches wide and 5 inches deep and can be easily placed on a small desk. Its affordability, at around $30, is also appealing.
However, the key measure of humidifying power was a disappointing 48mL/h. Even in the 40-square-foot space where we tested this humidifier, it took about 15 minutes to increase the humidity from 30% to 40%. You can't expect much from its humidification power. On the other hand, the electricity cost is cheap, costing only 43 cents per month.
This humidifier also doesn’t come equipped with a timer function or an automatic mode, so it can’t adjust to the conditions and run on its own. In the end, we recommend you increase your budget slightly for a high-quality humidifier instead, the Dreo Humidifier HM311.

Products we tested
We used a thermo-hygrostat chamber, which can control temperature and humidity consistently, and standardized the temperature and humidity before operation. To prevent environmental changes caused by factors other than the humidifier, we started the humidifier after stopping the operation of the thermo-hygrostat chamber and checked how much the humidity rose.
We estimated the amount of humidification per hour, and scored the recommendation level, giving higher scores to humidifiers with larger amounts of humidification.
Utilize a temperature and humidity-controlled room of 70-75 square feet, standardizing the pre-test room temperature at 68°F and humidity at 20%
Standardize the humidifier mode to the highest setting
We set the standard for humidifiers as a product that can maintain humidity almost perfectly in automatic mode.
We used a temperature- and humidity-controlled room, which can maintain a constant environment, to standardize the temperature and humidity before operation. To check how well the humidifiers could maintain the humidity level, we stopped operating the humidity-controlled room to prevent changes in the environment due to factors other than the humidifiers and ran the humidifiers for 30 minutes.
We placed a temperature and humidity logger that can automatically record temperature and humidity in the four corners of the room, and measured and recorded the temperature and humidity every 10 seconds.
In addition, the functionality to easily maintain humidity was checked by a tester for each humidifier and was scored based on the following points to rate the recommendability of each model.
Test device: Temperature and Humidity Logger (Fujita Electric Works' "NFC Communication Temperature & Humidity Data Logger KT-255F")
We used a constant-temperature and constant-humidity room of about 70-75 square feet, standardizing the room temperature to 68°F and humidity to 30% before testing
The location of the temperature and humidity logger took into account the typical height of a bed, which is 25 inches and calculated by adding the height of the face
The mode of the humidifier was set to 50% if there was an automatic mode. If there wasn't a 50% setting, we set it to be as close to 50% as possible. If there was no automatic mode, we standardized it to the weakest mode
The humidity 30 minutes after starting the operation
The number of selectable modes
We set the standard for humidifiers as a product that can prevent mold and bacteria by cleaning about once every 5 days.
We operated the humidifier continuously for 5 days, adding water once a day. After that, we confirmed the presence or absence of mold and bacteria in the water inside the humidifier at a lab. We scored the recommendation level based on the smallest amount of mold and bacteria, with the highest score going to products where no mold or bacteria could be seen even when cultured in an agar medium. Humidifiers with less mold and bacteria earned higher ratings and recommendations.
Operated the humidifier for 5 days
Used water according to the manufacturer's recommendations, either distilled or tap water
Mailed the water from the humidifier to a lab for testing
Standardized the operating mode to the one with the longest duration.
Left the water on agar medium for 5 days to check for mold and bacteria
We set the standard for humidifiers as a product with few parts to clean and an easy-to-maintain design.
The number of parts requiring maintenance where water accumulates (excluding humidifier filters)
The number of parts requiring maintenance where water doesn't accumulate
Presence of a function indicating when maintenance is required
Ease of maintenance due to tank shape
Absence of a humidifier filter
Absence of a tray
We set the standard for humidifiers as products that both directly provide the water supply from the top and that refilling from a faucet is possible. The product makes tank setup after water supply simple and is easy to drain.
Does the water tank have a handle?
The height of the tank
Is it necessary to change the orientation of the tank after supplying and draining water?
Can you supply water without removing the tank?
How much water leaks when the tank is removed three times?
Continuous usage time in strong mode
We established a standard for humidifiers with low electricity costs as products with an electric cost of less than 1 dollar per month.
We connected a watt monitor and scored the recommended level based on the accumulated power consumption after 60 minutes, with 30kWh as the upper limit. The less power consumed, the higher we recommended the humidifier.
Equipment: Watt Monitor (KETOTEK Watt Checker KTEM02)
The humidifier's mode is set to the strongest mode
We set the standard for a user-friendly humidifier as a product with easy-to-understand water supply timing and an attached timer function.
Can we see the water level from the outside?
Length of time for timer settings
The presence or absence of a function for switching between warm and cool modes
The presence or absence of remote control functionality
We set the standard for high quietness as a product quiet enough to let you sleep.
We placed the noise meter 3 feet away from the humidifier and put it into operation. With 30dB as the upper limit, we quantified the recommendation level based on how quiet it was. The quieter the humidifier, the more we recommend it.
Equipment: Sound Level Meter (RION Standard Sound Level Meter NL-27)
Ambient sound: Around 25dB
