To understand what the deal is with Japanese mascara, we first need to look at East Asian eyelashes. Studies have found that on average, Japanese eyelashes are shorter, fewer in number, and are angled downward.
There are a variety of Japanese mascaras that try to address these points, with several manufacturers improving their products daily, releasing lengthening, volumizing, or curling mascaras to address specific concerns.
Additionally, Japanese users also seek curl durability, so Japanese manufacturers have also put an effort into making products that can offer long-lasting curls, and these efforts by Japanese manufacturers have made Japanese mascara popular around the world in recent years.
Next, we want to introduce three things you should look out for when picking out Japanese tubing mascara.
Generally speaking, there are two kinds of mascara: lengthening and volumizing. Each transforms your eyes in a different way, adding new nuances and impressions.
If you’re looking for extra length, look for mascara that stretches out your lashes with the help of fiber strands–known in Japan as the fiber and long type.
If the fibers don't go on straight, your lashes can end up looking scraggly and jagged. Be sure to check your finish in the mirror and apply carefully.
However, volumizing mascara does clump easily. When you apply multiple coats, to keep product from balling up, comb out your lashes in between each layer.
If you've been yearning for lashes that stay pointed up or have to leave your makeup on for extended periods of time, consider curling mascara. Curling mascaras tend to harden after you apply them, which means they tend to dry quickly.
However, this means that once your mascara has dried, you won't be able to fix your lashes. On top of that, applying multiple coats adds more weight, making it more difficult for your lashes to stay curled. When using a curling mascara, keep it to one or two coats, and make any adjustments as quickly as possible.
Not getting your ideal lashes? One thing you may have overlooked is your brush! Here are the four most common types of mascara brushes; as you look over them, keep in mind both the kind of finish you want and what kind of brush you’d find easiest to work with.
Arched brushes have a gentle curve that makes them easy to fit most eye shapes, which in turn allows you to reach both corners of the eyes with one stroke. Arched brushes are best for when you don't want to apply multiple coats of mascara!
However, arched brushes that are too curved might actually make them more difficult to use. Try to choose a brush with a gentle curve to make it easy on yourself.
Rocket brushes allow you to adjust the angle of the brush depending on where you're applying mascara, which makes it easy to fine-tune the length and intensity of your lashes.
While the thickness of the brushes varies depending on the brand, narrower brushes can make it easy to reach more difficult areas, like the corners of your eyes. The length of the brush is also different depending on the brand, so make sure to check beforehand and use a length that suits you best.
Rocket brushes don't have much of a curve to them, so if they're too long, you can accidentally end up accidentally applying mascara onto your skin. Make sure to remove any excess mascara on the tip with a tissue to prevent making mistakes like this.
Not to be confused with eyelash combs, comb brushes, as the name implies, are brushes that are shaped like a comb. These brushes make it easy to separate your lashes without any advanced techniques and don't require the use of an eyelash comb.
That being said, some might initially struggle with these brushes. Additionally, keep in mind that while they're great for separating your lashes, they aren't the best at adding volume.
Since comb brushes can make it easy to apply in a straight line, they can offer a neat finish, even if the mascara has fibers in it. Comb brushes are also great for producing even finishes since they can apply mascara to each individual eyelash.
On particularly hot, sweaty days or during allergy season, when your eyes are constantly watering, your mascara may slide off without you even noticing. It’s worth giving the reviews a quick read-through before purchasing.
Of course, we also checked for smudge resistance when we tested out the products, so be sure to look out for the results! You can also throw on a top coat on days you need extra staying power.
&be is a brand produced by clue in collaboration with Japanese hair and makeup artist Yusuke Kawakita. This mascara brush has a gentle curve to it that makes it easy to apply, which is also aided by the fact that it dries quickly. Additionally, it's relatively easy to remove, making it ideal for those who don't want to apply too much stress on their lashes.
In our durability test, this product earned an astonishing full score, maintaining our tester's curls even after 8 hours had passed. This makes it best for days where you plan on having makeup on for long hours or days when you're too busy to fix your makeup.
It was able to separate our lashes without any clumping, creating a tapered finish toward the tips, earning it high marks in the finish test. This allows even novices to create a beautiful finish with almost no skill required. This is definitely one of the best Japanese mascaras out in the market today.
This mascara from K-Palette has a unique brush angled at 9 degrees. While the thickness of the brush may not be for everyone, the liquid itself has a silky texture that allows for a smooth application. On top of that, it's remarkably quick-drying, making it perfect for busy mornings.
Its finish is airy and light, almost as if your natural lashes grew on their own, making it perfect for a no-makeup look. Additionally, it separates the lashes without any clumping and is easily removable without the mascara bleeding everywhere, which is convenient for days when you just want to remove your makeup and go straight to bed.
After 8 hours, it began to lose its curl a bit, but this is likely within acceptable margins for most. This mascara has a refined finish, dries quickly, and is easy to remove, making it a mascara that's definitely worth trying out.
Noa Beauty's Kami-Waza Mascara was able to maintain excellent curls even after 8 hours with almost no change, making it great for when you plan on leaving your makeup on for a long time.
With its ability to neatly bundle up eyelashes without any clumping, this makes for a great product if you want more volume and a neat finish. However, some of our testers found it to be a little difficult to remove, so it's best to use makeup remover correctly.
The liquid itself is thick and isn't particularly fast-drying, but its thin, curved brush makes it easy to apply the mascara near the corners of the eyes. We also liked its smooth cap and compact size that makes it perfect for carrying around.
I-ne's Eyemania Innocent Long is a mascara that's compatible with eyelash extensions. Capable of neatly and evenly applying the mascara liquid on all lashes, including those in the corners of the eyes, it creates a gentle yet strong finish. When removing it, it tends to bleed out, so be sure to check in the mirror as you take it off.
Its arched brush, which is slightly on the bigger side, makes it easy to apply mascara on even the finest of lashes. On top of that, the mascara also dries fairly quickly, and it also earned high marks in our curl retention test, with almost no change after 8 hours. This mascara is great for long-lasting lashes on busy days or for days where you plan on being out for long.
D-Up's Curl Keeper Mascara is formulated with 10 beautifying ingredients. D-Up claims it locks in your curls, and we found this to be true: after 8 hours, we saw almost no change in how curled our lashes were. On top of it all, it's fairly easy to remove!
While we were slightly disappointed with how it made the tips of our lashes look a bit split, we were fond of how little clumping there was. Our testers commented that the small and narrow brush made it easy for them to apply the mascara to the corners of their eyes, as well as commented on how the liquid dries quickly, and on how easy the cap was to open. Overall, this mascara was easy to use and has great durability.
Makeup artist Takako Ohashi's original mascara features a whopping 18 different beautifying ingredients. While the liquid is slightly thick, it applies smoothly and dries fast. When it's time to take it off, all you need to do is blend a bit of cleansing oil and it'll fall right off.
Unfortunately, we found that our lashes tended to stick together, but this was offset by the fact that this mascara doesn't clump. Additionally, this earned high scores in the curl retention test, with almost no sagging curls after 8 hours.
I-ne's Carome. Real Volume Mascara is removable with warm water as well as a cleansing oil. While it lost a bit of its curl after 8 hours, it's probably acceptable for most.
In our finish test, this earned high marks, capable of adding volume while separating each individual eyelash. The thickness and length of the brush was fairly average, but we liked how we were able to apply mascara from the corners of eyer eyes in one go, and it was relatively quick to dry. However, this does tend to clump up when multiple coats are applied, so be warned.
ACRO's Amplitutde Extra Volume Color Mascara is available in 8 different colors. While it can neatly separate your lashes well, the liquid tends to accumulate on the tips, so we recommend using an eyelash comb. It's fairly easily removed, so it's perfect for those who don't want to apply any stress to their lashes.
The container is on the larger side, and the thickness of the liquid might not be for everyone, but it dries quickly and opens and closes smoothly, which we liked. Moreover, the curl durability was outstanding, with almost no noticeable change after 8 hours.
Ya-Man's Only Minerals Mineral Multi Mascara can not only be used on your lashes but your eyebrows as well. We weren't too fond of how the mascara didn't apply neatly on our lashes, but it had excellent curl retention, with no change after 8 hours.
It has a fine, loose texture that allows you to apply it smoothly. It also dries at break-neck speeds; even if you blink immediately after applying it, it won't transfer any color where you don't want it.
The slightly narrow brush allows you to reach difficult spots like the corners of your eyes. This product also earned a full score in the removal test, quickly coming off with just a little bit of cleansing oil.
Flowfushi's Uzu Mote Mascara Vol. 9 is a waterproof mascara that can be removed with warm water. There was nothing outstanding about its finish, and it was overall fairly average. However, we felt that it was difficult to apply and doesn't dry as quickly as other products, making it a bit more difficult to use.
However, where this product really shone was in its curl durability. It was able to fully maintain its curls after 8 hours, with no visible change, making it great for long days. Additionally, by taking your time and gently using cleansing oil, it can be removed neatly. Make sure you use a mirror when you remove it!
We gathered the 44 best products on e-commerce sites popular in Japan like Amazon, Rakuten, Yahoo! Shopping, and @cosme shopping and tested them all.
We tested each product for the following:
We had two beginners apply mascara twice and had our expert, professional hair and makeup artist Rika Fujiwara, check the finish. Products that didn't clump, easily separated the lashes, and had a good color and vibrancy were given a high score.
We found that fibers, whether or not products were removable with warm water, and whether or not they were formulated with beautifying ingredients didn't have any effect on the finish.
Arched brushes fit the curve of our tester's eyelids better, and more watery liquids were easier to apply smoothly without getting caught on the lashes, resulting in a clump-free finish. We found that &be's mascara had the best finish of all the products we tested.
We applied all the products to fake eyelashes and put them up all on a wall for eight hours. We wanted to see how far the lashes drooped, both right after we applied tubing mascara and after eight hours had passed. We then graded each product on a scale from 1.0 to 5.0.
※In order to simulate real-world conditions, we also applied artificial sweat, a mixture of horse oil and water, onto our lashes at the four-hour mark.
In this test, we found that there was no relationship between the type of mascara, be it volumizing or lengthening, and curl retention.
However, we did find that products that were better at keeping their curls were mostly waterproof. For more waterproof mascara, click the link below!
Next, we tested to see how easy it was to remove each mascara.
We had three Japanese testers use one mascara a day, and then had them remove it after seven to eight hours with cleansing oil. Products that were easily removed with little effort were given a higher score.
※To maintain equality, we had all our testers use the same cleansing oil.
Finally, we tested how each mascara felt to use.
We invited three Japanese testers to test all products and had them rate each product on its usability. Products that were easy to open and close, carry around, easy to apply, and dried quickly were given a high score.
We stuck the coated lashes onto sheets of paper and sprayed them with an artificial mixture of water and sebum. We then passed each set of lashes over with a cotton five times and looked at how much the mascara smeared. We then graded each on a scale from 1.0 to 5.0.
We found that products that were easy to apply and dried quickly were easy to use.
Mascaras with brushes that had relatively long bristles, brushes that had a nice thickness, and mascara liquids that weren't too thick or too runny made it easy to apply mascara quickly, smoothly, and evenly.
On the other hand, brushes with short bristles, plastic brushes, thicker liquids, or brushes that were too thick were difficult to use for novices.
Here, we have some tips on how to apply mascara.
The trick to getting a neat finish is to apply mascara in a straight line from the roots to the tips.
Moving the brush from left to right in a jagged motion can result in an uneven finish as well as your lashes can clump together, so it's best to avoid applying mascara this way. Moreover, make sure to keep it to one or two coats to prevent your lashes from getting too heavy, since that'll make them droop down.
Before you apply mascara, make sure to use a tissue and remove any excess moisture and oil from your eyelashes.
If you skip this step, you'll be unable to apply the mascara neatly, and your lashes won't be as curled as they otherwise would be.
After you've applied your mascara, but find yourself still wanting more volume, try this trick! Instead of applying another coat of mascara, place the brush on the roots of your lashes to further highlight them.
Applying more mascara to the tips of your lashes can ruin the finish, and it can be difficult to separate your lashes even with the use of a comb.
Mascara liquid can solidify when it's cold, so either leave it in your pocket and warm it up with your body heat or use a hairdryer to warm it up.
While there are some mascaras that can be removed with warm water, there are others that require makeup remover to take it off neatly.
If you find yourself using a mascara that's difficult to remove, if there's one thing you should remember is to never rub hard. Excessive rubbing not only leads to pigmentation around your eyes but also can cause wrinkling, so it's best to let a makeup remover gently blend with your mascara first.
Steps:
While this ultimately depends on how frequently you use your mascara, it's a good idea to check on the condition of it at around the three-month mark from when you start using it. Take your brush and gently rub it on a tissue; if you don't see an even amount of mascara transfer onto the tissue, it's probably time to replace your mascara.
In order to keep your mascara clean and to maintain a neat finish, replace your old mascara after a certain amount of time has passed.
Mascaras aren't the only thing you need when trying to make your eyes stand out. Eyeliners and eyelash curlers can do wonders for completing your look. Take a look at some tried and true options below!
