How to Choose the Best Wet Dog Foods - Buying Guide
There are plenty of wet dog food options available to choose from but before you select the best one for your dog. Here are some pointers to keep in mind.
Check the Ingredients
Dogs need a balanced diet that meets all their nutritional requirements. Proteins are essential for your dog’s health, and the best proteins for your dog are animal proteins. Avoid wet dog foods that do not have animal protein as one of the primary ingredients.
Apart from proteins and carbohydrates, dogs need healthy fiber in their diet to promote gut health. Go for dog foods containing fiber-rich ingredients such as pumpkin, which is a great source of fiber, especially for dogs with sensitive stomachs.
Along with checking for the ingredients you want in your dog’s food, also check for ingredients you do not want. Filler content like corn, soy and wheat have little nutritional value and are common food allergens that you should avoid.
Avoid high carbohydrate and high-fat wet dog foods as they may cause excessive weight gain. Inactive dogs and senior dogs need wet dog foods that are low in calories since they are prone to obesity. There are plenty of weight management wet dog foods available for dogs that need to maintain their weight or lose excess pounds.
Go for Age-Appropriate Wet Dog Foods
Your dog’s dietary requirements tend to evolve as they grow and age-appropriate wet dog food will meet their nutritional needs best.
Puppies need a higher protein content since their bodies are growing and they need a dog food that will promote muscle growth. Wet food specifically formulated for puppies will have the right amount of protein to meet the needs of a growing puppy.
If your dog is getting on in age, senior dog food will help in dealing with some of the health conditions that come with old age. Senior dogs need easily-digestible meals that will not cause digestive issues. Foods enriched with essential minerals such as glucosamine and chondroitin will promote joint health.
Does Your Dog Have Special Dietary Requirements?
Always consider your dog’s dietary requirements and sensitivities when buying food and treats for them. Is your dog on a low-sodium diet? Allergic to grains? Or sensitive to gluten? These are some of the considerations to have in mind when picking the right wet dog food.
Look for common allergens on the labels to avoid feeding your dog something he will react to. Some dogs are sensitive to ingredients such as eggs, which are often included in dog foods and can be easily missed if you do not read your labels carefully.
Check the AAFCO Statement
The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) certifies how nutritious dog food is and for what stage of life the food is suited. Good quality wet dog foods will always be formulated to meet AAFCO guidelines which are meant to ensure that the food meets the minimum nutrient requirements for your dog.
