How to Choose Birthday Candles
With so many options available it may be difficult to know which birthday candles will be the best option for you. That's why we've put together this buying guide to help you make your decision!
Choose the Right Type of Candle
There are a few different types of candles that you can buy and the type that is best for you depends on what kind of decoration you want. A popular type of candle is a candle in the shape of a number as you can use these for the birthday boy or girl's age.
These are especially popular with cakes for young children, as every birthday is considered a milestone. They can also be used for adults celebrating special birthdays like 18, 21, or any birthday ending in zero, for example. Be careful with these for adults though, as not every adult wants to broadcast their age!
Another popular type of candle is long, thin candles. You can use as many of these as you wish, as long as you have space on the cake! It’s possible to count out birthdays by the number of candles or just use a few.
You can get more interesting types of candles too, such as ones with a star beneath the wick or that spell out words like ‘happy birthday.’ It’s even possible to get candles that have different colored flames!
Consider Color Coordination
Whatever type of candle you choose, you can get them in almost any color you want! They come in so many more colors than just white. When it comes to choosing a color, you can choose a color that the birthday person likes. If you have a color scheme for the cake though, it might be best to match the cake as this will look better.
There are also options that include glitter; the risk with this is that the glitter might get all over your hands or the cake. Check reviewer comments to see how well the glitter sticks to the wax!
Ensure the Candles are Safe
Candles that are used on cakes have to be able to stick in the cake so that they won’t fall over. If a lit candle fell over, this could be a fire hazard. Some candles have thick and wide bases that don’t dig in deep but are stable enough to keep the candle standing.
Other candles have long and thin sticks so that they sink deeply into the cake. It’s also possible to get candles that come in detachable holders, so the holder fits into the cake and the candle can be removed separately. The best method will depend on the size of the candle and the type of cake.
For candles that are big and heavy, such as numbers, then thicker and wide bases are best. They will stop too much weight from being applied to the base. Thin and long candles are best served by thin and long sticks.
Decide if You Want Candles That Can Be Reused
Candles on a cake are usually only lit for a short period of time and they only need to last as long as it takes for them to be blown out! This can make buying them very wasteful.
If you regularly need candles for cakes and use them for different people, then look at buying neutral candles that can be used again and again. Try plain colors, such as white, and candles that don’t have numbers. There are also LED candles available.
However, if someone has multiple cakes due to multiple parties, then numbered candles won’t be as wasteful. Make sure the candle will last long enough for multiple uses without losing its shape!

The LED light has a switch at the bottom of the base, which reviewers recommend switching on before the candles are placed on the cake. The light has different options and can be set to flash quickly or slowly as well as staying on without flashing.
Reviewers say that the LED lights don't just flash but also rotate through a variety of colors. They like that the bases can be reused, as even when the wax candles burn down, they're easy to replace. Reviewers say the lights are well made and the batteries last.
This candle is a solid block number that is just over three inches tall. It is a simple design but is made eye-catching by being covered in glitter. The base of the candle is colored black and is as thick and sturdy as the candle.
Although this listing is only for the number four, the manufacturer does sell all of the numbers in this style. A few reviewers received a candle that broke in transit, so make sure you order early and have enough time to check or replace the candle before using it.
Reviewers like how sparkly this candle is and that the glitter doesn't fall off. They loved how it looks on their cakes, especially any cakes that have a black theme. Reviewers say it is cute and easy to light.
If your cake has enough space, why not get enough candles to spell out happy birthday? This candle set has all thirteen letters to spell this birthday greeting. Each letter is in the same font and gold coloring and has a painted gold wick.
Reviewers say the candles only burn for a short period of time so may not be suitable for reuse. Some got packs with missing letters or damaged candles, so check yours before the big day arrives.
Reviewers say that the candles look very stylish when on the cake. They like that the candles look classy and expensive and are perfect for cakes for adults. Reviewers also say that the gold color looks great with chocolate frosting.

The candles are simple in their design as they are just short, straight candles in multiple colors. However, when they are lit, their flames are also different colors, making them a unique talking point for any cake.
A few reviewers found that the colored flames weren't as different and easy to distinguish as they expected. They also say that the candles are pretty brittle, so be careful when handling them.

Talking TablesNumber Birthday Candle
This numerical candle is three inches high so there should be enough room for than one candle if needed. Although the base color is pink, the gold glitter makes the candle shine and gives it a unique look. This product listing allows you to choose your number, from zero to nine.
A few reviewers who bought more than one candle found that the pink color varied slightly from candle to candle. Some also received candles with a broken stick, making it difficult to secure to the cake.
Reviewers were pleased that the glitter didn't fall off the candle. They also say that it's easy to light, doesn't burn out fast, and the wax doesn't melt quickly either. Reviewers say it is a sturdy candle and looks very cute on a birthday cake!
LuterMetallic Birthday Candles in Holders
These candles are available in several different metallic colors, including a couple of mixed color options. The candles are five and a half inches long and have plastic candle holders to attach them to the cake. As the candles and holders are separate, you can cut the candles to a shorter length if required.
Some reviewers thought that the candles melted too quickly. For some others, they were too thin and brittle. A few also found that the colors were not exactly as they expected.
Others were pleased that the metallic coating burns down at the same speed as the candle itself, so they keep their color. Reviewers liked that as the candles are longer than average, even if they did burn down they remained long enough to be used again.
This is a full set of multicolored numbers, ranging from zero to nine. The numbers are made of wax and have a wick at the top and a long, thin stick at the bottom to sink them into the cake.
The size of the candles isn't fully made clear in the product listing, leading many reviewers to think that the number itself was three inches high. They say that the number is only one inch tall, so be aware of this before you purchase.
Due to them being quite small, reviewers found these perfect for cupcakes or smaller birthday cakes. The reviewers also say that they don't burn down quickly so they can be reused. Reviewers like the bright colors of the candles and say they match the product pictures.
