Why Should You Buy a Printer?

Print Without Leaving Your Home! Ideal for Remote Work

Print Without Leaving Your Home! Ideal for Remote Work

Have you ever had to print something out, whether presentation materials or a form to send, necessitating an urgent trip to FedEx or the supermarket because you don't have a printer at home? Even in paperless offices, there are many situations where there'll be something you need to print.

Having your own printer saves you the trouble of having to go out to print or scan something, making remote work and routine admin tasks more efficient. Furthermore, printing at home is cheaper overall, so owning a printer will help you save money in the long term.

To sum up, a printer is a necessity for those of us who work from home, as it saves the time and effort of going out and is a cheaper way to print overall.

What's the Difference Between Inkjet and Laser?

Easier to Install and More Versatile, Inkjet Printers Are Recommended For Home Use

Easier to Install and More Versatile, Inkjet Printers Are Recommended For Home Use

When choosing a printer to use at home, one of the first questions that comes up is whether to go for an inkjet or a laser printer. Based on the features of each one, we recommend inkjet printers for home use.

As the name suggests, inkjet printers print by spraying ink onto the paper. They are smaller than laser printers and can be placed anywhere. In addition to monochromatic printing, many models can handle color printing, photo printing, and scanning, among other functions. These printers can also be used for purposes other than work, such as printing photos and making paper crafts.

Laser printers print by fusing a powder called toner onto a drum. They print faster than inkjet printers and are better for high-volume printing, but they are also large in size and require a degree of space for installation. High-end models can print in color, print photos, and scan documents, but they are more expensive.

How to Choose Inkjet Printers

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Inkjet Printers.

1

For Business Use, Choose an Ink-Tank Printer

Within the category of inkjet printers, you'll have to choose between cartridge printers and ink-tank printers. Of these two varieties, ink-tank printers are by far the better choice. We will explain the reasons in detail below.

Ink-Tank Printers Have Lower Running Costs, Making Up for the Initial Price

Ink-Tank Printers Have Lower Running Costs, Making Up for the Initial Price

Ink tank printers tend to be more expensive than cartridge printers at the outset, but cost less to run overall. Comparing HP's Smart Tank 7602 and the Deskjet 2755e, the cartridge printer is 60 times more expensive to run than the ink tank printer.

The initial price is higher, with the ink-tank printer costing 5.7 times more. But if you print frequently, whether for work or a hobby, an ink-tank printer is cheaper in the long run.

Ink Delivery Services Make Regular Use Easier and More Affordable

Ink Delivery Services Make Regular Use Easier and More Affordable

Many manufacturers provide ink delivery services for cartridge printers, such as HP's Instant Ink and Canon's Auto Replenishment Service. There are minor differences in these services from company to company, but they are all easy to use, save you the hassle of ordering ink yourself, and can be cheaper.

Though cartridge delivery services may be convenient, an even more recommended approach is to buy an ink tank printer and purchase your own ink. We compared HP's Instant Ink service charges with the cost of running an HP Smart Tank 7602. As the image shows, the ink tank printer is cheaper, regardless of the number of pages printed per month.

Additionally, Instant Ink charges a fee if you exceed the contracted number of sheets for your time period. If you buy your own tank printer, you won't have to calculate or monitor small details like this like you would with delivery services.

Ink-tank printers hold more ink, requiring less maintenance and providing a significant advantage over cartridges. We printed 2,500 sheets of letter paper and 100 photo-quality prints during our tests. Cartridge printers required several ink changes, but the ink-tank printers completed the task without needing a refill.

Choose a Fast Ink-Tank Printer That Automatically Turns On

Choose a Fast Ink-Tank Printer That Automatically Turns On

Ink-tank printers have become increasingly common in recent years. While an ink-tank printer with a low running cost is your best option, there are still many models that fit these specifications. After checking the running costs, the next thing to look for is a printer that automatically turns on when used, with a shorter waiting time for printing.

A printer that automatically turns on will start printing when instructed to do so from a computer or phone. Without this feature, the printer must be turned on manually every time you want to print, which can be a hassle depending on where your printer is in relation to your desk.

Some of the printers we tested could print ten monochrome sheets in under one minute, while some took more than three minutes to perform the same task. According to our estimates, ten monochrome sheets should complete printing within 90 seconds to minimize any potential stress caused by waiting. If the printer can do this task in under 60 seconds, it's fast enough for the user to barely notice the waiting time, indicating a printer that operates smoothly.

Syuri Taguchi
Former PC sales; Head of PC Products at mybest

A laser printer is a good choice if you need a printer with faster printing speeds for business purposes. Many laser printers support high-speed printing of 20 pages or more per minute in both monochrome and color, making your work more efficient.

However, be aware that portable printers, while compact and great for taking on the go, tend to have slow printing speeds and may take several minutes to print 10 sheets.

Printers With ADF Are More Efficient for Work-Purposes

Printers With ADF Are More Efficient for Work-Purposes

If you're using your printer for work, we recommend finding a model with an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) function. Printers with ADF are able to scan multiple documents at once for copying. Although it may not be an option you use every day, there are certainly cases where ADF can come in handy.

The HP Smart Tank 7602 Meets Many of Our Criteria

The HP Smart Tank 7602 Meets Many of Our Criteria

Among the printers we tested, we recommend HP's Smart Tank 7602. It was the fastest in its category, and relatively inexpensive to run with its ink-tank system. The Smart Tank 7602's speed was 57.7 seconds for ten monochrome documents. It features an ADF function, which allows you to scan a large number of documents at once.

In spite of all of its positive features, the Smart Tank 7602 doesn't turn on automatically. Regardless, its performance remains superior to the Epson EcoTank ET-2800, another ink-tank printer, ranking the Smart Tank 7602 as the best we tested.

Syuri Taguchi
Former PC sales; Head of PC Products at mybest
Syuri Taguchi

Printers feature two types of LCD screens: those with a touch-screen function and screens that display information input from buttons. We definitely recommend LCD touch screens. Printers with LCDs that display based on buttons typically have smaller, harder-to-read screens, while the touch LCD screens are larger and more intuitive, similar to a smartphone.

HP's Smart Tank 7602 has a touch LCD panel, while Epson's EcoTank ET-2800 uses buttons, another reason we recommend the Smart Tank 7602 in terms of usability.

Some modern printers have no LCD screen and can only operated via button press. Although these printers tend to have lower prices, they are considerably more challenging to use intuitively. Compared with printers with LCD screens, getting used to using them may take some time.

2

Cartridge Printers Are Cheaper for Occasional Use

If you only use your printer occasionally to print family photos or print decorations for birthday parties, for example, the running cost of your printer is less of an overall concern. In this event, we recommend a cartridge printer, as they have more affordable prices from the outset.

Some Inexpensive Cartridge Printers Have Poor Print Quality and Speed

Some Inexpensive Cartridge Printers Have Poor Print Quality and Speed

Many of the online best-selling items are more affordable cartridge printers under $100. According to our tests, however, these can be risky, as some of the models show poorer performance.

In black and white prints, some of the text was blurry and difficult to read, and some of the photographs had noticable lines. With color printing, some of the areas meant to be printed as solid yellow were rough and choppy, and some of the text areas were blurred. In terms of printing speed, ten monochromatic documents took around 183 seconds.

Inkjet printers with low prices can be hit or miss, so try to avoid buying a printer based only on online sales records. Instead, the rankings and results we provide from here should be useful in making your selection.

The Canon MG3620 Prints Clean Documents and Photos

The Canon MG3620 Prints Clean Documents and Photos

In terms of cartridge printers available for lower prices, we recommend the Canon MG3620. Compared to other cartridge models, the Canon MG3620 produced high-quality prints in all areas, including monochromatic, color, and photos.

The printing speed was relatively slow at 134 seconds for ten black and white pages, but it turns on automatically when used, eliminating the need to press the power button.

What we loved

  • Low operating cost per print
  • Fast printing
  • ADF (Automatic duplex printing)

What we didn't love

  • Some print quality issues

The HP Smart Tank 7602 has one of the largest shares in the inkjet printer market internationally, and is advertised as providing maximum productivity and saved time with its fast print speeds, ADF, and fax functions.

The HP Smart Tank 7602 is one of the most popular inkjet printers on the market. According to HP, it provides maximum productivity and saves time with fast print speeds, an automatic document feeder (ADF), and fax functions.

Its operating cost is unbeatable—only $0.002 per color document, one of the lowest among the products we tested. Even if you print a large number of documents each day while working remotely, printing costs will fit well within your budget.

We recorded printing speeds of 57 seconds for ten monochrome documents, and 97 seconds for ten color documents, the fastest of the printers we tested. When printing documents urgently for a client meeting, this printer is fast, smooth, and stress-free.

Although the monochrome printout had excellent visibility and dark text, it also had scattered areas with patchy quality. Printing documents with mixed text sizes, such as annotations, looked slightly grainy. During color printing, figures and tables were clear with vivid colors. This printer produces color documents that you would not be embarrassed to show to your boss or business partners.

Photo prints were vivid and clean, though colors were too vivid and far removed from the original, resulting in slightly lower quality. The HP Smart Tank 7602 has many additional features, such as ADF and automatic duplex printing. It also has an intuitive operating system and a touch panel.

Verdict: High-Quality Documents and Photo Printing for Work and Home

What we loved

  • Affordable operating cost
  • Excellent print quality

What we didn't love

  • Slower print speeds
  • Lacks ADF

Canon’s PIXUS MG3620 is compact and easy to use anywhere. It has an operating cost of about $0.059 per color document, so it is affordable even if used daily. We measured printing speeds of 134 seconds for ten monochrome documents and 184 seconds for ten color documents, which is slower than other printers we tested. This print speed would be noticeable when documents need to be printed quickly. An automatic power-on function, however, reduces the time to first print.

Monochrome printing produced text that was clear and sharp, with no blurring or spottiness. Color charts and graphs were vivid and easy to read, worthy of important presentation material. Photo prints were very precisely defined, capturing even the smallest details in people and distant trees, though the overall color was slightly darker than the original.

The PIXUS MG3620 is not the most convenient printer because it lacks an ADF and only one type of paper can be placed in its single paper tray. Among those tested, this printer has excellent print quality overall.

Verdict: Lots of Functions; Print Quality Lacking

What we loved

  • More economical than printing at a store
  • Two color options to match décor
  • ADF and automatic duplexing

What we didn't love

  • Very slow printing speeds
  • Blacks are gray
  • Low print quality

With printing, copying, scanning, and faxing in one device, Canon's PIXMA TR4720 is advertised as meeting all of your printing needs at work and home. Its case comes in two colors—black and white—allowing you to choose one that best matches your home office’s décor.

The operating cost of this printer is about $0.091 per color document, which is economical in comparison to printing at a store. Printing speeds were 138 seconds for ten monochrome documents and 260 seconds for ten color documents, which is poor if quick printing is needed. Color printing was particularly slower than with other printers we tested. The printer turns on automatically, reducing time to the first print slightly.

When printing in black and white, the text was gray, making it less visible, and there were stray marks on the page. The same was true for color documents, with text in figures and tables streaking. The print quality is adequate for internal documents, but we do not recommend using this printer for documents shown to business partners or clients.

Photos appeared slightly different from originals, and they were blurry. Although average, this is not the printer for you if you want sharp images. The printer does, however, offer great functionality, with ADF and automatic duplexing. This printer is worth it only if you print documents for personal use.

Verdict: Printing Clean and Sharp; Photos Dark with Low Contrast

What we loved

  • Low operating cost per print
  • Fast monochrome printing
  • Sharp, clear text

What we didn't love

  • Color printing is slow
  • Dark color tones versus original

The WorkForce WF-2950 from Epson is advertised as delivering quality printing through cutting-edge imaging technology. The operating cost is $0.099 per color document, which is low in comparison to printing at a store. We recorded print speeds of 74 seconds for ten monochrome documents and 162 seconds for ten color documents. The printer excels at high-speed printing of black and white documents, but color printing is slow. Also, the printer does not turn on automatically, so it takes additional time to get the first print.

During monochrome printing, text was clear and sharp, and blurring and streaking were not much of an issue. Color printing produces vivid and easy-to-read figures and tables, so the quality is high enough for work documents. Although photo prints allowed us to distinguish distant scenery in fine detail, color tones were slightly darker than originals, and some testers reported that the contrast was weak.

For less than $100, this printer offers excellent speed and print quality, and ADF, automatic duplex printing, and other functions make this printer an excellent value.

Verdict: Good for Remote Work; Low Operating Cost

What we loved

  • Low operating cost per print
  • Black text is crisp

What we didn't love

  • Color printing is slow
  • No ADF or automatic document feeder

The EcoTank ET-2800 from Epson is an ink-tank printer that features a high-capacity, refillable ink tank, which allows users to print for a long time before refilling ink. The operating cost is $0.005 per color document, which is low in comparison to other printers we tested.

This printer is a good choice if you use it daily for remote work. We measured printing speeds of 83 seconds for ten monochrome documents and 162 seconds for ten color documents. The monochrome print speed is adequate, but color prints feel slow. The printer doesn't turn on automatically, so time to first print is longer than other printers.

Black and white text printing is clear and crisp, making it easy to read. Color printed tables and graphs are bright and clear. Solid areas of color, however, were rough and coarse, showing a dot pattern. Photo prints produced colors that were slightly darker than the originals, and distant and small objects were often blurry.

A low operating cost and decent overall print speed make this a good printer for remote work. It does not have ADF or automatic duplex printing, so if you're looking for functionality or planning on scanning a large number of documents, this is not the printer for you.

Verdict: Color Prints Poor; Viable Budget Option

What we loved

  • Signals that printing is complete

What we didn't love

  • Color prints slow
  • Black text appears gray
  • No Wi-Fi printing

HP's ENVY 6065e is a cartridge inkjet printer that features an audible signal when printing is complete. The operating cost is $0.12 per color document, which is higher than the other printers we tested, though still cheaper than printing in a store.

Printing took 86 seconds for ten monochrome documents and 158 seconds for ten color documents. Black and white printing speed is adequate, but color printing seemed to take a long time. The printer doesn't turn on automatically, so the time to first print is slower.

Monochromatic printing produced somewhat gray text that lacked sharpness. Defects were noticeable during color printing, such as print breaks in solid areas and faded colors. Photos printed colorfully and beautifully, but they were slightly brighter than originals, and dark areas were subdued and bland.

HP's ENVY 6065e has no ADF or Wi-Fi printing, but this printer is budget-friendly at $80, which is great for price-conscious buyers who can live with lower print quality.

Verdict: Priced for All Budgets; Long Print Times

What we loved

  • Budget-friendly
  • Black text easy to read

What we didn't love

  • Very slow monochrome and color printing
  • Color printing streaks on page

HP's Deskjet 2755e cartridge inkjet printer is a low-cost, entry-level model that performs all basic tasks, including copying, scanning, and color printing. Printing costs $0.12 per page for color documents, which is higher than other printers we tested, but it is still considerably cheaper than printing at a store.

Ten monochromatic documents took 183 seconds, and ten color documents printed in 175 seconds. Both of these speeds are slow, but this printer’s long black and white printing speed stands out as particularly long among other printers. The printer doesn't turn on automatically, adding to a lengthy first print.

Text was crisp and easy to read during monochromatic testing, but color prints had streaks in solid areas, and a Venn diagram appeared spotty. The poor quality of color prints makes this printer unsuitable for business use. Photos printed brighter than their originals, and they had weak contrast in dark areas, giving photos an initial impression of being particularly clear due to vivid colors and well-defined details.

The HP Deskjet 2755e has low functionality, with neither ADF nor Wi-Fi compatibility, but at less than $60, it is an option for those on a budget, if you don’t mind long print times.

Operating Cost

Operating Cost

We examined each model in the following way, defining a very satisfactory inkjet printer as one that has a printing cost that is barely noticeable even when used daily; that is, around 0.1 cent or less per full color print.

Scoring Method

The cost per full-color print was calculated by referring to the nominal value on each manufacturer's official website and dividing the number of yield sheets (the number of sheets that can be printed in each color) by the list price for replacement ink. The number of yield sheets is calculated using international standards ISO/IEC24711 (measurement method) and ISO/IEC24712 (measured images).

Test Conditions

  • If multiple sizes of replacement ink exist for a given model, refer to the list price and number of yield sheets for the size with the largest capacity.
  • All prices and yield sheet counts are calculated as of August 2023.

2

Print Time

Print Time

When it came to print time, we were looking for an inkjet printer that finishes quickly once the start button is pressed on the computer. Specifically, a printer that turns on automatically and prints ten monochromatic documents in 40 seconds or less and ten color documents in 80 seconds or less.

Scoring Method

Printing speed was calculated by printing ten monochrome and ten color documents three times each, and the average time was calculated. The time was counted from the point when paper feeding begins, and for accurate measurement, the time was confirmed using videos taken with a phone. In addition, as with printing speed, printers with an automatic power-on function were given higher scores in the evaluation.

Test Conditions

  • Printing samples: monochrome documents and color documents.
  • We printed using dedicated drivers for each printer.
  • All printers were set in standard or normal mode.

3

Document Quality

Document Quality
We gave high evaluations to printers that could produce clean-looking documents as defined by testers from countries where English is predominantly spoken, and each printer was evaluated in the following way.

Scoring Method

The testers actually read each document to verify their clarity, and a score was assigned based on their recommendations.

Test Conditions

  • Testers: 11 men and women from countries where English is predominantly spoken.
  • Printed samples: Monochrome and color documents
  • Dedicated drivers were used for each printer.
  • All printers were set to standard or normal mode.

Areas We Checked

    Monochromatic printing:
  • Is the text easy to read?
  • Is there any blurring or smudging?

Color printing:

  • Are the colors clear and easy to see?
  • Are differences in color well-defined?
  • Is there any unevenness, blurring, or smudging?
4

Photo Quality

Photo Quality

We defined a satisfactory product as one that was able to print high-quality photos and clean printed documents as rated by testers from countries where English is predominantly spoken. Each printer was tested in the following way.

Scoring Method

Two photos were printed using each printer, and testers compared the quality of the photo to the monitor image. Scores were assigned based on how clear the image was.

Test Conditions

  • Testers: 11 men and women from countries where English is predominantly spoken.
  • Printed samples: two photos
  • Dedicated drivers were used for each printer.
  • All printers were set to clean and high quality modes.

Areas We Checked

  • Are the colors bright and vivid?
  • Are there any subtle differences in color?
  • Are the colors unnatural in comparison with the original image?
  • Is there any blurring?
  • Are printed details clearly defined and expressed?

5

Additional Functions

Additional Functions

In terms of additional functions, we defined a very satisfactory printer as one that is able to do everything a print service can do, and evaluated each printer in the following way.

Scoring Method

Testers checked each product, scored each device based on their perspective, and a ranking was assigned based on their preferences.

Areas We Checked

  • Number of trays
  • Can it print using WiFi?
  • Does it support Air Print?
  • Does it have an SD card slot?
  • Can the printer print from a USB drive?
  • Does it support Cloud Print?
  • Does it support automatic duplex printing?
  • Does it have a floodbed or sheetfed printing system?
