Which Headphones Are Suitable for Running?

Every manufacturer claims to make the best headphones for a variety of uses and conditions, such as those best to wear while running or engaging in other sports. We first discuss what makes headphones suitable for running.

Resistance to Falling, Noise Cancellation, and Water Resistance

Resistance to Falling, Noise Cancellation, and Water Resistance

As your body bounces up and down while running, headphones that fall out easily can disrupt your focus and make you spend more time adjusting your headphones than focusing on your activity. If they make it difficult to hear the sound of approaching cars and bicycles, they put you at risk. Headphones can also get wet from rain or sweat, so headphones that are not waterproof can easily get damaged.

We thoroughly tested whether they stay in place while running, whether they let you hear sounds around you while using them, and whether they were sufficiently waterproof to avoid damage from rain and sweat. We also considered their sound quality and other convenient features they may have to enhance your running experience.

Waterproofing is indicated by “IPX+number.” A higher number indicates greater waterproofing. If you intend to use your headphones while exercising, choose at least an IPX4 waterproof rating. All headphones tested here had a waterproof rating above IPX4.

How to Choose Headphones and Earbuds for Running

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Headphones and Earbuds for Running.

1

Our Recommendation

At mybest, we searched for and tested headphones that are suitable for anyone who enjoys running. Based on these results, we introduce our top picks below.

Our Top Pick: Apple AirPods Pro

Our Top Pick: Apple AirPods Pro

For those who like running in various locations, such as outdoors and at the gym, we recommend Apple's AirPods ProTheir external sound capture feature is excellent, making ambient sounds, such as noise from cars and bicycles, clear. They also have a noise-canceling feature, which is useful not only when you want to focus while running at the gym, but when commuting or during work hours.

They don't have ear hooks or wings, which made us worry that they might fall off while running, but they never slipped off during testing. These headphones are the in-ear type, which means they are inserted into the ear. This makes the bass powerful, and sounds at other frequencies are clear. These headphones will certainly uplift your mood with their great sound and stability.

Goshi Hara
Head of Audio Equipment at mybest

If headphones get wet, they can become slippery and fall off. For those who sweat a lot while running or never miss a day of exercise due to inclement weather, check out Shokz Openfit headphones below.

Best Open-ear Design for Outdoors: Shokz Openfit

Best Open-ear Design for Outdoors: Shokz Openfit

For those who find in-ear headphones uncomfortable due to pressure on the ears or for those who worry about not being able to hear ambient noises when outdoors, we recommend Shokz's Openfit headphones. They have an open-ear design, which means that you can hear sounds around you clearly. They also hang on your ear, so they are secure and feel natural. Reduced pressure and discomfort in your ears means that you can concentrate more on running.

The open ear design lets some sound escape, resulting in inferior sound quality in comparison to in-ear headphones, but among open ear headphones, Shokz's Openfit offers the highest quality sound. Lower frequencies sound good, which are usually weaker with open ear type headphones.

Budget Pick: Anker Sport X 10

Budget Pick: Anker Sport X 10

Anker Sport X 10 headphones are worth considering for those looking to keep the price of new headphones low, though they have some faults in comparison to the two headphones above.

They are over $100 cheaper than Apple AirPods Pro, and they excel at staying secure, sound quality, and functionality. They fit firmly in the ear, making it difficult for them to fall out even when running. Bass is powerful, so music sounds especially good while outdoors.

Ambient sounds get lost when using these headphones, making surrounding sounds difficult to hear. We do not recommend them for those running outside because they pose a safety hazard. They are, however, great for running or exercising at the gym.

2

Choose Headphones Based on Comfort

Headphones come in several shapes and types, including in-ear type, open-ear type, and bone conduction type. Each has a different way of being worn, so which will stay in your ear is a concern for runners.

During testing, no headphones moved significantly or fell off during running, no matter the shape or type. Some seemed like they were going to shift around and cause damage, loss, or discomfort. To concentrate on running, we recommend choosing headphones that are comfortable.

Headphones With the Same Shape Produced a Different Fit While Running

Headphones With the Same Shape Produced a Different Fit While Running

Even if headphones have a similar shape or are the same type (e.g., in-ear or open-ear type), fit varies greatly due to slight differences in shape. During testing, Anker fit perfectly in the ear and could be worn with confidence, but JLab were uncomfortable and felt like they were going to slip off, even though they had the same basic shape. Headphones cannot be judged by shape alone, so refer to our rankings for more details on fit and comfort.

Goshi Hara
Head of Audio Equipment at mybest
Goshi Hara

The fit of in-ear type headphones changes depending on their size and material. All headphones are able to be sized differently, so if you feel discomfort or pressure, try a smaller earpiece that comes with the set. If discomfort persists despite changing the size, try an earpiece that is sold separately. They may appear similar, but even a slight change in the size of an earpiece can mean the difference between comfort and discomfort.

3

Open-Ear Headphones for Outdoor Running; In-Ear Headphones for General Use

Ambient noises sound different when wearing open-ear versus in-ear headphones. Open-ear headphones don’t block your ears from hearing sound around you, and in-ear headphones use an external sound capture function. To reduce the chances of an accident, choose a model that makes it easy to hear ambient sounds while running.

Open-Ear Headphones Pick Up All Sound, In-Ear's Sound Capture Quality Varies Across Models

Open-Ear Headphones Pick Up All Sound, In-Ear's Sound Capture Quality Varies Across Models

Open-ear headphones do not block your ears, so all of the open-ear headphones we tested allowed us to hear ambient sounds clearly. We could distinctly hear not only loud sounds, such as trucks and motorcycles, but faint sounds of bicycle brakes, making it safer to run in places with heavy traffic.

For in-ear models, an external sound capture function is needed to hear ambient sounds. However, performance varied across headphones, and some even had difficulty picking up sounds from large vehicles

In-ear models with a noise-canceling function are recommended for those who want to concentrate on running at the gym or use them while doing chores. To reduce the risk of accidents, choose headphones with excellent external sound pickup for activities that require alertness.

4

Choose Headphones With High-Quality Bass and Mid-Range Sounds

Choose Headphones With High-Quality Bass and Mid-Range Sounds

Bass and mid-range tones are especially important for headphones used during running. If the bass range is solid, the rhythm of the music is easily heard, enabling a runner to keep a good cadence. If the mid-range is solid, voices stand out, so you can clearly catch the melody of pop songs.

In-Ear Type Headphones Have Higher Quality Bass and Mid-Range Sounds

In-Ear Type Headphones Have Higher Quality Bass and Mid-Range Sounds

In-ear headphones are attractive because they easily convey sound and produce powerful bass due to the ear being completely sealed. They convey even the smallest details of a song, such as inflections in voices and the timbre of smaller instruments, allowing music to have a strong presence. Ten testers who evaluated the sound quality in the headphones found that when it came to sound quality, the top 3 headphones were in-ear type.

Open-ear headphones have exposed speakers, which makes sound escape, and they have weaker bass than other headphone types. If you prioritize sound quality, go with in-ear headphones.

For Open-Ear Headphones, Shokz Openfit are Excellent

For Open-Ear Headphones, Shokz Openfit are Excellent

Some people prefer headphones that don't block their ears. Among open-ear headphones, Shokz's Openfit had the best sound quality. The bass was lacking somewhat, but the volume was loud enough for background music.

Other open-ear types sounded light and had weak bass, but this headphone had decent bass, so you could feel the heaviness of the sound. Vocals stood out so the melody is easy to hear. If you prefer open-ear headphones, choose Shokz Openfit.

Goshi Hara

Many of today's wireless headphones allow you to adjust the sound profile using equalizers in a dedicated app. If you find that the bass is too light, or if you have a hard time hearing vocals, try adjusting the equalizers to emphasize bass and midtones to your preference.

5

Reduce Charging Time With Headphones That Have Over 10 Hours of Continuous Playback

Wired headphones can get tangled and cables can be bothersome while running, so we recommend wireless headphones. Battery life varies greatly depending on make and model, so choose headphones with a long continuous playback to avoid frequent charging.

With 10 Hours, No Need to Recharge for 1-2 Weeks

With 10 Hours, No Need to Recharge for 1-2 Weeks

If you run 1 hour per day and your headphones have 10 or more hours of playback on a single charge, you won’t need to recharge them for 2 to 3 weeks at a time. Although often overlooked when comparing headphones, battery life is important when you just want to grab your headphones and head out for a run.

If your headphones charge quickly, it won’t take long to charge them when you want to go for a run on a moment’s notice. If you commonly forget to charge wireless devices, get a set of headphones that support fast charging.

Goshi Hara
Head of Audio Equipment at mybest
Goshi Hara

Even better, if you use your headphones during work, house chores, or activities other than running, choose headphones with a charging case.

Headphones without a charging case commonly play for about 10 to 20 hours. If you use them while commuting to work, their batteries will run out in about 2 days. If your headphones come with a charging case, they will work, on average, for about 20 to 40 hours, reducing the hassle of charging.

6

Choose Headphones With On-Device Controls

There are times when you want to listen to your favorite song while running, or turn up the volume on the song you are listening to.

No Smartphone Needed for Basic Operation With On-Device Control Models

No Smartphone Needed for Basic Operation With On-Device Control Models

If your headphones have on-device controls such as Play/Stop, Skip, and Volume Up/Down, you won't need to pull out your smartphone to perform those actions while running. Most of the headphones we tested support these functions, but be aware that not all do.

If you take calls while running, we recommend headphones that support hands-free calling.

7

For Use on Calls, Choose Ones With a Noise-Resistant Microphone

We tested the amount of sound that each microphone picked up, seeking the headphones that make conversations easier.

Removing Ambient Noise Increases Call Quality

Removing Ambient Noise Increases Call Quality

We found that the ease with which we communicated with another party depended greatly on how well the headphones cut out ambient noise. Environmental noise drowns out your voice, leading to difficulties conveying what you're trying to say.

When ambient noise is removed, conversations are clearer. The gym and outdoors can be noisy, so we recommend headphones that are resistant to noise interference.

mybest's Top Choice: Clear Sound; Perfect for Various Uses

What we loved

  • In-ear type headphones that deliver great sound
  • Great noise canceling
  • USB-C charging

What we didn't love

  • High cost
  • High volume may make ambient sounds harder to hear

Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) is an in-ear type headphone that delivers great sound at a high price. AirPods originally had a Lightning charging port, but this model is compatible with USB-C instead. When worn for running, all 10 of our testers were able to use these headphones without slipping or dropping. The earpieces are made of silicone, so there is the possibility of them coming loose when wet with rain or sweat, but the fit is light and comfortable.

While testing sensitivity to outside noise, our testers found that they could hear ambient sounds clearly when using the AirPods’ sound capture function. However, the high volume of music might make ambient sounds, such as the brakes on a bicycle, hard to hear.

The AirPods’ noise canceling function is convenient when you want to concentrate at the gym or when using them outside. The sound quality is balanced and clear, and the vocals stand out. The rhythm of the bass was thumping, and you could feel the tempo of the song. On-device controls, such as Play/Stop, Volume Up/Down, and Skip, make these headphones more convenient to use. A hands-free calling function rounds out these headphones’ features.

Waterproofing for the AirPods is rated IPX4, so there is little risk of malfunction from rain or sweat. Continuous playback time is 6 hours for the headphones alone and 30 hours when using the charging case.

Mic performance was excellent, cutting surrounding noise by 33.1 dB. The range of sound when pronouncing consonants, from 2kHz to 4kHz, is great, making your voice clear and easy to hold conversations outdoors.

Natural Fit; Recommended for Outdoor Runners

What we loved

  • Open ear design means ambient sounds are easier to hear
  • Flexible fit options
  • Bass is good

What we didn't love

  • Sound quality lacking
  • Can't adjust volume from earbuds

Shokz's Openfit open-ear headphones have two layers of silicone structure, giving a flexible fit for any ear. Some testers reported a slight wobble while running, but they didn't slip or fall off. These headphones’ open-ear design means that they don't block the ear canal, so ambient sounds can be heard clearly. Vocals and bass rhythms, however, were not canceled by outside noise.

Sound quality in terms of depth and sharpness is lacking, but the loud bass means that the thickness of the music can be heard. Overall, the music sounds slightly muffled, but the vocals stand out. Delicate sounds were strong, making the headphones adequate for light background music while exercising.

Battery life is 7 hours for the headphones alone and 28 hours when using the charging case. IPX4 water resistance makes rain and sweat no threat to the longevity of the headphones. No volume adjustment on the device is inconvenient, though volume can be controlled on a smartphone.

Microphone performance was high, cutting 34dB of background noise. Female voices at the 2kHz to 4kHz range sounded excellent, making voices easier for a listener to hear.

Strong Bass; Fits Easily in Ear

What we loved

  • Ear wings provide stability
  • Powerful bass
  • External sound capture makes ambient noises fairly easy to hear

What we didn't love

  • Bass might be too aggressive for some users
  • Microphone performance lacking

The Beats FitPro, from Beats by Dr. Dre and produced by Apple, has a distinct in-ear design. Its ear wings provide exceptional stability by hooking onto the back of the ear. When used while running, our testers reported no instances of them slipping or falling out.

The FitPro’s comfortable fit helps runners focus while running. Sound quality features powerful bass with a punchy feel, allowing the beat to be felt clearly. For some users, the bass might be too powerful, drowning out vocals in songs. However, they are suitable for runners who are into rock or hip-hop music.

With the external sound-capture function turned on, you can clearly hear the noise of cars and motorcycles. In comparison to open-ear headphones, sound perception is slightly less, but they can still pick up sounds like bicycle brakes. Vocals and bass are not drowned out by noise, making them useful even in places where there is heavy traffic.

These headphones offer on-device controls, including Play/Stop, Volume Up/Down, and Skip. However, using volume control disables command operations for noise canceling and external sound capture. Water resistance is rated at IPX4, so there is no danger of damage from rain and sweat. Continuous play time is 6 hours for the headphones alone and up to 24 hours when using the charging case.

The microphone cut only 10.1dB of ambient noise, and although voice calls are clear, listeners might find the sound annoying to listen to after a while.

High Water Resistance; Great Sound Quality

What we loved

  • Fits snuggly in ear
  • Powerful sound
  • IPX8 rated waterproofing

What we didn't love

  • Silicone might become slippery from rain or sweat and fall out
  • High volume reduces ability to hear ambient noises

Elite 8 Active is a fully wireless model that is coated with a special silicone for a snug fit. During testing, the headphones stayed secure in the ears without shifting or falling out, even when running or shaking the head vigorously. However, the earpieces are made of silicone, and when inserted into the ear canal, they may become slippery and be prone to falling out when wet from rain or sweat. The earpieces fit naturally without causing discomfort or pressure. These headphones are suitable for short periods of physical activity.

The sound quality is powerful and rich across all music genres since the in-ear design seals off the ear. Vocals are clear and you can even perceive nuances and the singer's breaths. Quieter instruments can also be heard, providing a greater sense of immersion in comparison to open type headphones.

Car sounds were clearly audible when the external sound capture feature was turned on. However, users may find that quieter sounds, such as bicycle brakes, are harder to hear. Turning up the volume can make it difficult to hear surrounding sounds.

You can control Play/Pause, Volume Up/Down, and Skip on the device, and these headphones support hands-free calls. Its waterproof rating is IPX8, so it can be used even underwater. The battery lasts up to 14 hours using the headphones alone and up to 56 hours when using the charging case.

The microphone reduced ambient noise by 14.2dB. The frequency range where consonant sounds occur, 2kHz to 4kHz, is somewhat emphasized, ensuring crisp voice delivery. Although it doesn't eliminate noise completely, its performance does not impact call communication.

Lacks Punch,; Easy to Hear Ambient Noises

What we loved

  • Ambient noises easy to hear
  • Secure fit
  • Nodding and shaking head allow you to control these headphones

What we didn't love

  • Heavier than other headphones
  • Ambient noise might make music difficult to hear

Cleer's ARC II Sport features an open-ear design that allows you to adjust the angle of the speaker. When worn while running, our testers felt a slight shake from the motion, but the headphones did not fall or slip due to the ear hooks. These headphones feel heavier than others, but they aren't uncomfortable in the ear canal.

When testing outside noise sensitivity, we could clearly hear everything, including loud trucks and motorcycles and even softer sounds like bicycle brakes. This caused the bass and vocals to be masked by ambient noise, but it did make it easier to detect danger among lots of traffic.

The sound had a sense of openness because these headphones do not block the ear canal. However, the sound was mild and the punch of the bass was lacking. Vocals were clear and easy to hear, but the rhythm of the songs was difficult to detect, especially outside.

Buttons on the device allow you to Play/Stop, adjust Volume Up/Down, and Skip songs. You can respond to calls by nodding your head and skip songs by shaking your head. These headphones have a waterproof rating of IPX5, so you can easily wash them with water without fear of damaging the electronics.

Continuous playback time is 8 hours for the headphones alone and 35 hours when using the charging case. When testing microphone performance, the 2kHz to 4kHz range, where consonants are voiced, was emphasized, and voices sounded crisp. However, ambient noise was reduced only by 3.4dB, which might be annoying to people on the other end of a call, especially when in crowded places.

Ambient Sounds Difficult to Hear; Strong Bass; Comfortable to Wear

What we loved

  • Ear hooks secure the headphones well
  • Powerful bass

What we didn't love

  • Softer ambient sounds are difficult to hear
  • Bass may be too much for some users

The Sport X10 by Anker is an in-ear type headphone that features ear hooks. When worn while running, it fits snugly in the ear, preventing it from slipping or falling out. Soft material on the earpieces and ear hooks make it comfortable to wear.

Activating the external sound capture function allows you to hear loud noises, such as trucks and motorcycles. However, it is difficult to hear passing cars, and bicycle brakes are nearly inaudible. Music is clear, but it may be difficult to detect danger, making it less suitable for outdoor use.

The bass is powerful, and sounds from instruments come across clearly, providing a sense of presence. The bass occasionally drowns out vocals, making these headphones suitable for rock or hip-hop songs.

These headphones have Play/Stop, Volume Up/Down, and Skip on the device, and hands-free calling eliminates the need to use a smartphone. Its waterproof rating is IPX8, reducing the risk of malfunction if accidentally dropped in water. With a continuous playback time of 8 hours for the headphones alone and 32 hours when using the charging case, it can be used for longer periods than most other headphones.

The frequency range of 2kHz to 4kHz, which is used when pronouncing consonants, was strongly emphasized when using the microphone, making voices crisp and clear. Ambient noise was cut by 23.2dB, allowing for clear phone conversations, even outdoors.

Easy to Hear Ambient Sounds; Quiet Bass

What we loved

  • Excellent stability on ears
  • Ambient sounds easy to hear

What we didn't love

  • Bass is lacking
  • Uncomfortable for some
Float Run from SONY is an all-in-one, open ear type headphone that offers the special feature of feeling as if the sound is floating near your ears. When tested while running, these headphones provided excellent stability. All 10 of our testers were able to run without these headphones slipping or falling off. Some people, however, might feel discomfort when the speaker touches the temple.

When we tested easy of hearing ambient sounds, we could clearly hear cars, motorcycles, and even bicycle brakes, due to the open ear design. In noisy places, the bass got drowned out, but the vocals were clear. These headphones give a sense of openness, so you feel enveloped in music. However, in comparison to in-ear types and other open-ear types, the bass is noticeably weaker. The vocals stood out, but it was difficult to feel the rhythm.

The device allows Play/Stop, Volume Up/Down, and Skip, and it offers hands-free calling. It is waterproof to the IPX4 standard, reducing the risk of damage from rain or sweat. It has a maximum playtime of up to 10 hours, which is long enough for a few workouts each week.

These headphones can be worn around the neck when not in use, reducing the chances of losing them. The microphone reduces ambient noise by only 6.2dB, making it somewhat noisy. The 2kHz to 4kHz range, where consonants are voiced, is weak, so other parties might not understand what you are saying when speaking outdoors.

Low Ambient Noise; Weak Bass

What we loved

  • Stable fit
  • Ambient sounds easy to hear

What we didn't love

  • Causes slight pressure at temple after long use
  • Weak bass
Shokz’s OpenRun Pro boasts superior sound quality and functionality in comparison to other models. When worn while running, this single-unit device wraps around the ears and provides a stable fit with no tendency to fall out. The speakers touch the temple, causing slight pressure, but it can be used comfortably for a few hours of running.

When testing for ambient noise sensitivity, the open-ear design clearly transmitted the sounds of cars and motorcycles. Even when the music volume was high, quieter sounds, such as bicycle brakes, could be heard. When ambient noise was loud, the bass was drowned out, but the vocals could be heard clearly. The quality of the sound is light, especially a weak bass. Feeling the rhythm of the music was difficult, but the vocals were prominent and easy to hear.

You can Play/Stop, adjust the Volume Up/Down, and Skip songs directly on the device, and these headphones allow you to answer calls. Its waterproof rating of IPX5 means that you can use it while exercising without worrying about rain or sweat. With a battery life of up to 10 hours, it should suffice for a few workout sessions each week. When not in use, it can be worn around the neck, reducing the risk of loss.

The microphone test showed that the 2kHz to 4kHz range, where consonants are pronounced, wasn't emphasized, and the voice sounded muffled. Ambient noise was reduced by only 10.1dB, so difficulty hearing calls can be expected, especially outdoors.

Powerful Bass; Lacks External Sound Sensitivity

What we loved

  • Available in six colors
  • Bass and vocals sound good

What we didn't love

  • Shift gradually while running
  • Create pressure after extended use
  • No sound intake function

The Go Air Sport by JLab is an in-ear type headphone with ear hooks that is available in six colors. While running, there is no major misalignment or falling out, but they shifted gradually, requiring occasional readjustment. The part that goes in the ear and the ear hooks are hard, creating some pressure after prolonged use.

When testing outside noise sensitivity, ambient sounds were difficult to hear because these headphones have no external sound capture function. You can hear loud noises, such as trucks and motorcycles, but quieter sounds are difficult to hear. Bass and vocals come through clearly, but not hearing ambient sounds makes it difficult to detect danger in high-traffic locations.

Deep, powerful bass makes songs feel full and strong, allowing you to enjoy the music’s rhythm. However, the powerful bass drowned out the vocals, and fine modulations and breathing were difficult to hear. This product is suited for rock or hip-hop music. On-device controls include Play/Stop, Volume Up/Down, and Skip, and the headphones allow hands-free calls.

This headphone’s waterproof rating is IPX5, so washing the product of dirt and sweat is easy. Continuous playtime is 8 hours for the headphones alone and 32 hours when used with the charging case. During microphone tests, the range that emphasizes consonants between 2kHz and 4kHz makes the voice crisp. However, it cuts only 3.6dB of ambient noise, making calls bothersome for the listener.
