9 Best Bone-Conduction Headphones of 2023 [Tested and Reviewed]

If you use headphones while biking or walking, traditional in- or over-ear headphones can block the outside world—which is great for audio quality, but can be dangerous if you can’t hear traffic around you. Bone conduction headphones keep your ears totally open, and transmit sound the same way you hear your own voice: by sending the sound waves through your bones. But this sometimes means low audio quality, and muffled sounds. Which ones will keep you safe but still let you vibe out to your beats?

We've compared 9 bestselling bone-conduction headphones available online and put them to the test to recommend the best ones for you.

We tested each product for the following:

  • Sound Quality
  • Ease of Use
  • Waterproofing
  • Battery Performance
  • Comfort
  • Microphone Quality
  • Sound Clarity in Noisy Environments

Which product ended up being the best of the best? We'll also tell you how to pick the best Bone-conduction headphones on your own in our buying guide, so read on for more shopping tips.

How do Bone Conduction Headphones Work?

How do Bone Conduction Headphones Work?

Bone-conduction earphones differ from traditional earphones in that they sit outside your ear, rather than inside you of it, without blocking your ear canal. So how do they work?

Sound travels via vibrations, usually through the air. When we speak, our vocal cords vibrate as we push air through them, putting sound into the world. Audio speakers, and most types of headphones, use little magnets and drivers to vibrate the air, too. These sound waves then pass into our ear canal, hit the eardrum, and send the vibrations to the cochlea, where we sense them and interpret them as sound. But earbuds and over-ear headphones can block off our ear canals, so we lose the rest of the world when we’re listening to anything.

Bone-conduction earphones still work via vibrations, but not through the air. Instead, they vibrate the bones in our skull, where the vibrations head directly to the cochlea, and can be interpreted by our brain. It’s the same way we hear our own voice (and why our voice sounds so strange to us on recordings rather than in our own head).

Bone-conduction headphones are less likely to damage the ear canal and ear drum since they aren’t inserted into the ear—but just like traditional earphones, turning up the volume can risk hearing damage, so please be aware of this risk.

Seiji Nakagawa
Professor, Chiba UniversitySeiji Nakagawa

If you turn up the volume too high on bone-conduction headphones, the speaker can vibrate uncomfortably. Make sure that you're mindful of the volume.

Hear the World Around You With Bone-Conduction Headphones

Hear the World Around You With Bone-Conduction Headphones

There are two main benefits of bone-conduction headphones.

The first isyou have a lower risk of outdoor accidents. Since they don't block out background sounds, you can enjoy your music and still be aware of your surroundings.

You can also talk to people without taking offyour headphones. Bone-conduction headphones don’t block the ear canal, both audibly and visibly, making it easier for others to approach and talk to you.

How to Choose Bone-Conduction Headphones

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Bone-Conduction Headphones.

1

Emphasize the Bass

Sound quality is important for all headphones, but given that bone-conduction headphones transmit sound through bone- rather than air vibrations, you need to look for slightly different things in what makes them sound good. To test for the best audio, mybest gathered 10 testers to compare the sound quality across various bone-conduction headphones.

Good Bass Quality Is Crucial in Bone-conduction Headphones

Good Bass Quality Is Crucial in Bone-conduction Headphones

Designed to leave the ears unblocked, bone-conduction earphones ensure you remain aware of ambient sounds. As a result, bass quality becomes a vital aspect of their overall sound performance.

Bone-conduction headphones with good bass reproduction provide a solid sound that isn't drowned out by external noises. This ensures that you can enjoy music even when near busy traffic.

Conversely, bone-conduction earphones with subpar bass reproduction risk letting external noise overpower the music, diminishing your listening experience. This makes appreciating bass-rich genres like rock a challenge.

Comparative Sound Quality Evaluation by 10 Testers

Comparative Sound Quality Evaluation by 10 Testers

Sound quality, particularly bass, is crucial for bone-conduction headphones. It's essential to test them to understand the differences between models.

At mybest, we conducted a comprehensive sound quality comparison of various bone-conduction headphones. We gathered ten evaluators to provide diverse insights into each model, with a particular emphasis on bass, vocals, and instrumentals during the tests.

The Best Sound Quality: Shokz OpenRun Pro

The Best Sound Quality: Shokz OpenRun Pro

Based on our sound quality tests, Shokz's OpenRun Pro came out on top. Not only was the bass reproduction top-notch, but vocals and instruments were clear.

If sound quality is the most important thing to you, we recommend the Shokz OpenRun Pro, which scored over four out of five in all categories.

2

Clear Audio, Even When Outdoors

Bone-conduction headphones are often used for running or outdoor sports, where they must compete with external noises like voices, traffic, and trains. We replicated real-world noise conditions to test how well the headphones compete with sound in the world around them.

Clarity in Earphones That Don’t Block the Ears

Clarity in Earphones That Don’t Block the Ears

As bone-conduction earphones don't block the ears and use vibrations of the bone to relay sound, external noises are constantly audible. Therefore, while running or exercising outdoors, roadside noises and the voices of people nearby will be much more noticeable. Choosing bone-conduction headphones with easy-to-hear sound is essential if you want to enjoy music outside.

Recreating Real-World Noise: Testing the Clarity of Bone-conduction Earphones

Recreating Real-World Noise: Testing the Clarity of Bone-conduction Earphones

Bone-conduction earphones let ambient sounds in due to their open-ear design. We simulated roadside noise through speakers to identify models that enhance the listening experience of music and podcasts in noisy settings.

Consider the High-Performance Shokz Series for Use in Noisy Environments

Consider the High-Performance Shokz Series for Use in Noisy Environments

Our tests found the Shokz series to be particularly commendable. From high-end to entry-level models, the whole range consistently scored over four out of five. Thanks to the unique bone-conduction drivers, listeners could clearly discern the audio, even amidst significant noise. Shokz's earphones let you enjoy your music no matter the environment.

3

Opt for Models With Over Eight Hours of Continuous Playback

Bone-conduction headphones allow for prolonged wear without blocking the ears, making them comfortable for everyday use. But unlike wireless earbuds, they often lack a charging case, so charging on the go is a challenge. Always check the playback duration when planning long-term use.

Considerations for All-Day Wear of Bone-Conduction Headphones

Considerations for All-Day Wear of Bone-Conduction Headphones

Since bone-conduction earphones don't block external sounds, they offer the versatility of all-day wear. For example, you can listen to music all day at the office and keep them on once you head out for an after-work run.

If you plan on using them throughout the day, select models with over eight hours of playback.

Goshi Hara
Head of Audio Equipment at mybestGoshi Hara

Unlike wireless earbuds with charging cases, bone-conduction headphones can't be recharged on the go. If you want to use them all day, opt for a model offering a minimum of eight hours of continuous playback.

For Extended Use Over Eight Hours, Consider Mojawa’s MOJO2 and Shokz’s Openrun Pro

For Extended Use Over Eight Hours, Consider Mojawa’s MOJO2 and Shokz’s Openrun Pro

For all-day use, we recommend the MOJO2s by Mojawa. They offer eight hours of continuous playback, weigh just 0.9 ounces, and provide outstanding comfort. They're a particularly good choice for running.

Next, we recommend Shokz's OpenRun Pro. With an impressive ten hours continuous playback time, they can last up to two days without needing a recharge. The superior sound quality makes these ideal for those who truly appreciate their music.

4

Prioritizing Water Resistance for Enhanced Versatility

Bone-conduction headphones are often exposed to moisture since they're worn outside the ear. It's wise, therefore, to choose water-resistant models.

Bone-Conduction Headphones Have a Higher Risk of Moisture Damage

Bone-Conduction Headphones Have a Higher Risk of Moisture Damage

Unlike traditional earphones, which sit inside the ear and are less susceptible to moisture from sweat or rain, bone-conduction headphones sit outside the ear. This makes them more vulnerable to moisture exposure, highlighting the need for waterproof capabilities.

Choosing Water Resistance Based on Usage

Choosing Water Resistance Based on Usage

Bone-conduction headphones' waterproof capabilities differ across models. When selecting a pair, consider the IP rating, which denotes its resistance to water and dust. The IP rating combines symbols and numbers: for instance, 'IP55' means that the headphones meet level-5 standards for both dust and water resistance.

For bone-conduction earphones, water resistance is a must. The digit following the letters 'IP' indicates each product's waterproof capability. If you're planning to use them while swimming, aim for the IPX8 rating, which is the highest in water resistance. One model we particularly recommend for swimmers is the TRI Multi-Sport by H2OAudio. They come with an integrated MP3 player, allowing standalone use without a smartphone.

For use in heavy rain, opt for earphones with an IPX5 rating or above. Mojawa's Mojo2 are a great choice, boasting a superior fit that makes them ideal for rainy runs.

To minimize the risk of damage from sweat, rain, or moisture, consider models with at least an IPX4 rating. Shokz's OpenRun Pros are a top pick, delivering exceptional bass clarity for outdoor listening.

Goshi Hara
Head of Audio Equipment at mybestGoshi Hara

All bone-conduction headphones we have featured have an IPX4 rating or higher.

5

Prioritizing Microphone Quality for Calls

When using bone-conduction earphones for calls, microphone performance is crucial. Different models offer varying microphone sound quality based on their features.

Microphone Performance Affects Voice Transmission

Microphone Performance Affects Voice Transmission

Microphone clarity is a must to ensure the caller can hear you properly. A high-performance microphone can filter out noise and deliver clear audio, which is especially useful when making calls while out and about.

With subpar microphone quality, your voice can sound distorted and drowned out by background noise, making it difficult for the caller to hear you.

During Tests, Models Amplifying Higher Frequencies Were Much Clearer

During Tests, Models Amplifying Higher Frequencies Were Much Clearer

The majority of bone-conduction earphones come equipped with a microphone. To assess their sound quality, we fitted the earphones onto a dummy head with a built-in microphone and then played back the recorded audio.

Our tests revealed that models with superior speech clarity operated within the 100-1000 hertz frequency range, had minimal noise interference, and emphasized high frequencies between 2000-4000 hertz.

Headphones With Boom Mics Had Better Voice Clarity

Headphones With Boom Mics Had Better Voice Clarity

After evaluating the microphone capabilities of various bone-conduction earphones, we found that those with boom mics outperformed others. Positioned closer to the user's mouth, boom microphones picked up voices with greater accuracy, ensuring reduced noise interference and enhanced sound clarity.

Meanwhile, models without boom mics picked up more background noise and struggled with high-frequency detection, making the transmitted sound less clear and harder to discern.

Sound Quality to Enjoy Every Detail, With Ample Functionality and Water Resistance

Shokz is a Texas-based manufacturer that exclusively produces bone-conduction headphones. The OpenRun Pros are equipped with a newly developed version of their technology, boasting the capability to produce deep bass.

In the sound quality evaluation, earphones that delivered clear bass even at lower volumes were highly rated. The sound quality of this product particularly stood out when paired with powerful vocal performances. Moreover, in tests for clarity, the sound was distinct regardless of its source, ensuring a quality listening experience for all.

The earphones have several convenient features, including on-ear volume control and playback pause. Their multipoint compatibility means they can connect to multiple devices without the need for constant re-pairing. With an IP55 waterproof rating, they can resist water splashes from any direction, making them both durable and easy to clean.

The fit was praised for its comfortable design with no excessive side pressure that didn't feel too heavy. The battery offers 10 hours of continuous playback, and with its quick charge feature, just a 5-minute charge provides 1.5 hours of playback. This makes it perfect for those who require extended use.

However, when testing the microphone performance, neither male nor female voices had enhanced high frequencies, and there was noticeable noise pickup. We advise against using these earphones for outdoor calls. This product is best suited for those prioritizing sound quality in their earphones.

Proficient Instrumental Sound Quality With High Water Resistance and User-Friendly Features

Shokz, a global leader in bone-conduction technology based in Texas, offers the OpenRun model boasting its PremiumPitch™ 2.0+ technology for impeccable sound clarity.

When evaluating the sound quality, the fine audio detail and high resolution were impressive. The sound seemed to expand and fill the space, creating a realistic audio experience. While the bass was subdued in certain tracks, the articulation of musical instruments stood out. In tests for audibility, we could hear radio programs clearly, even amidst ambient noise. This is a practical choice for on-the-go listening.

In terms of functionality, volume adjustments can be made directly on the device, and a basic equalizer setting is available in the app. With an IP67 water resistance rating, this product can endure short-term submersion and heavy rainfall, ensuring peace of mind during outdoor adventures.

The fit received high praise and didn't cause any discomfort, even during extended wear. As for battery performance, the quick charge feature allows for 1.5 hours of playback with just a 10-minute charge and up to 8 hours of continuous use. However, our microphone tests indicated that it doesn't amplify high frequencies significantly, resulting in reduced clarity.

Clear Outdoor Audibility, Yet Limited Battery Life

Introduced in 2020, the OpenMoves are Shokz's introductory offering in their lineup of innovative bone-conduction earphones, cementing their reputation as leading pioneers in this space.

Audibility tests indicated that radio broadcasts and bass frequencies were discernible amidst ambient noise. However, the audio profile was described as authentic but lacking depth and precision. Vocals were the prominent highlight, while bass and instrumental elements were a little subdued, implying a sound profile not ideal for intricate musical expressions.

For convenience, the OpenMoves offer an integrated playback stop button and support multipoint connections. They carry a water resistance rating of IP55, ensuring resilience against heavy rain.

While the fit was noted to have significant side pressure causing mild discomfort, the earphones remained securely in place. Glasses wearers, however, reported issues positioning the microphone, noting that it interfered with their eyewear's frames. In microphone performance tests, sound pickup was uniform but lacked amplification in higher frequencies, making it a tad challenging to hear. On the battery front, the absence of rapid charging and a total playback duration of 6 hours means these are not as suitable for extended use on the go.

Water Resistance Meets Challenges in Noisy Environments

H2O Audio, a reputable manufacturer from California, has introduced the TRI Multi-Sport. Boasting eight gigabytes of onboard storage, you can enjoy lengthy playlists without being tethered to a smartphone.

Our sound quality tests revealed enticingly sharp bass tones coupled with balanced vocals. The earphones especially shone when depicting intricate instrumental sounds. However, they fell short in noisy settings. The speakers struggled to contend with external noise, hampering the experience of both music and radio broadcasts in loud surroundings.

Functionality-wise, they offer the essentials: playback stop and volume adjustment on the earphones themselves. The IPX8 waterproof rating stands out, enabling you to wear them confidently, whether outdoors or even underwater.

Wearers found the fit to be comfortable, though potentially slightly loose to some. The microphone's capacity to filter ambient noise was a little disappointing, often failing to amplify the vocal range effectively. This imperfection led to muffled communication. On the battery front, they promise a playtime of 6 continuous hours. However, the absence of quick charging could be offputting for those constantly on the move.

Superior Microphone Capability But Compromised Sound Clarity

The SuperQ3 Pros are produced by YouthWhisper, an esteemed U.S. manufacturer specializing in bone-conduction technology. They're crafted from soft, lightweight silicone, ensuring comfortable and long-lasting wear.

When evaluating sound quality, the bass appeared to lack depth and compromised the power of the overall audio. While the treble was discernible, certain notes cracked, obscuring the finer details. During the audibility test, many found the bass nearly indistinguishable, and it was hard to pick up nuances in the music. Likewise, radio broadcasts were difficult to decipher and appreciate.

From a convenience perspective, the SuperQ3 Pros allow users to pause songs and adjust volume directly on the earphones. They also boast multipoint compatibility. With an IP67 waterproof rating, this option will hold up well against heavy rainfall.

While the earphones offer a lightweight fit without being overly tight, some testers found them sliding during activities like running. The battery features a quick charge option for an hour of playback on a 5-minute charge. But with just 6 hours of continuous use, they won't last for a full day. However, the microphone performance shines, thanks to a boom mic that captures voices distinctly and with minimal ambient noise.

All-Day Battery Life, Yet Poor Audibility in Loud Settings

The MOJO1, introduced by Mojawa in 2021, is a bone-conduction earphone designed to elevate everyday experiences from fitness and work to travel.

Our sound quality assessment revealed robust bass and impactful music; however, individual sounds seemed to merge, losing clarity. Some users noted that it was tricky to differentiate between instruments due to the rounded sound profile.

During the audibility tests, the bass was overshadowed by external noise, making radio content nearly inaudible. The earphones might struggle to provide an enjoyable listening experience in louder environments. The comfort test indicated that while there was minimal side pressure and an overall comfortable fit, some found them prone to slipping while running. Microphone testing highlighted that while male voices were clear, female voices lacked clarity in higher frequencies.

For user convenience, these earphones offer on-device playback control and volume adjustments and are multipoint compatible. With an IP67 rating, they're resilient against heavy rainfall. Although they don't feature quick charging, the 8-hour battery life should suffice for all-day use.

Waterproof Design, But Low Audibility in Noisy Environments

YouthWhisper is a company that oversees the research, development, and sales of bone-conduction products. The SuperQ3s have superior waterproof capabilities compared to their predecessors, making them suitable for sporty activities in both rainy and sweaty conditions.

In our sound tests, the bass was almost imperceptible and lacked punch. Instrumental echoes were barely discernible, and the overall audio felt suppressed. Even the typically sharp and clear female vocals sounded muted and lacked vibrancy. The audibility test revealed that the majority of musical components were overwhelmed by ambient noise, making the audio almost inaudible. This could pose challenges in louder environments.

While they don't offer equalization features, the SuperQ3 do offer on-ear controls and are multipoint compatible. With a waterproof rating of IP67, they'll be fine even in heavy rainfall. When we tested the microphone, it managed to capture the essence of both male and female voices. However, it struggled with amplifying higher frequencies, resulting in a lack of clarity in voice transmissions.

Many appreciated the fit, describing them as lightweight and comfortable. Yet, a few testers noted slight movements during intense activities. The battery life, lasting 6 hours, may not suffice for an entire day's use. On the plus side, the quick charge provides an hour of playtime after just 5 minutes of charging.

Sound Lacks Power and Is Nearly Inaudible in Noisy Settings

The MOJO2 is Mojawa's latest offering in bone-conduction earphones, a creation by former Apple team members. It's championed as a lightweight model specifically tailored for fitness enthusiasts.

Sound quality reviews revealed a lighter bass, which could dampen the vibe of bass-rich songs. Instrumentals often seemed to get lost in the mix and sounded muddy, while vocals struggled with clarity. Testers found it hard to discern the bass and other instrumental details, especially in noisy environments. Radio shows also lacked clarity, so these may not be ideal for those wanting immersive sound in louder surroundings.

Like most models, the MOJO2s allow direct song playback and volume adjustments on the earphones. These essential features are well-integrated. The water-resistant rating is impressive at IPX67, ensuring protection even under brief submersions or heavy downpours. While the microphone picked up higher frequencies efficiently for male and female voices, it sometimes missed the richness of the voice.

The fit was reported as somewhat tight, particularly on the sides, yet it remained stable during activities like running. Battery performance is excellent, offering up to 8 hours of continuous play for a day's use. Additionally, a quick 10-minute charge can provide up to 1.5 hours of listening pleasure.

Lack of Bass Depth and Inaudibility in Noisy Environments

The Bluetooth Bone Conduction Headphones are a product of Youthwhisper, a manufacturer dedicated to creating bone-conduction earphones for hearing protection. The company promotes its seamless compatibility with both PCs and smartphones due to its stable Bluetooth connection.

When assessing sound quality, feedback indicated a noticeable lack of depth in the bass, which seemed to rustle and produce noise. The overall audio clarity and resolution were also subpar. In audibility tests, ambient noise rendered the headphones virtually inaudible, making it difficult to hear radio broadcasts. Listening to music while close to busy roads could be problematic.

These earphones come equipped with essential features like pause/play, volume adjustment, and an integrated microphone. However, charging is restricted to Micro-USB, which some users might find inconvenient. They boast an IP54 water-resistance rating, allowing them to endure light rain and sweat. While the microphone emphasized high frequencies in both male and female voices, it sometimes struggled to capture the essence of the speaker's voice.

The headphones are comfortably designed, striking a balance between a snug and relaxed fit. Testers praised them for being comfortable during extended wear and for staying in place during runs. However, the battery life is not the best. It lasts for only 6 hours on a single charge and does not offer the advantage of quick charging, meaning you'll have to re-charge to get a day's use out of them.

Microphone Quality

Microphone Quality

We then verified the microphone performance of each set of headphones.

We paired the headphones with a PC and mounted them on a dummy head microphone. We played male and female voices through the microphone's speaker, connected the headset to the PC, and set the dummy head microphone. Then, we played the male and female voices from the speaker built into the mouth of the dummy head microphone. We measured the voice that passed through the headset's microphone using music production software and analyzed the frequency characteristics of each product.

If the average from 100 to 1,000 hertz exceeded the average from 100 to 8,000 hertz, the product was rated as having a stable voice quality with a clear base. In addition, if the average from 2,000 to 4,000 hertz had a louder volume compared to the average from 100 to 8,000 hertz, it was rated as having a bright and sharp voice quality.
