You're likely looking into a steam mop because the old-school mop just isn’t cutting it anymore. It'd be a real letdown if, after all the effort to pick one out, it only cleaned as well as the mop you're trying to replace. So, we began our comparison by looking at how much more effectively a steam mop can remove dirt compared to a traditional mop.
In our tests for steam mop effectiveness, we tackled three types of messes: mud, jam, and colored oil. We then tried cleaning these same messes with a regular mop for comparison. Surprisingly, even mud, which the steam mop cleaned up effortlessly, was a challenge for the ordinary mop. The sticky jam, on the other hand, showed no signs of budging at all with a regular mop, highlighting not just the overall effectiveness of steam mops but also the differences between various models.
For those dealing with stubborn dirt and stickiness, a steam mop comes highly recommended. You might just be surprised at how effective it cleans!
While a steam mop is excellent for tackling tough grime, it's important to be aware that the heat and moisture could potentially harm your flooring. It's essential to thoroughly check if your floor material is suitable for this type of cleaning before proceeding.
Steam mops work wonders on heat-resistant tiles, sheet vinyl, and stone floors, effortlessly cutting through dirt and grime. However, if you have vinyl tile, wooden floors, or carpets, you'll want to proceed with caution. These materials are sensitive to heat and moisture and could be damaged by steam cleaning. It's best to keep it moving while cleaning and not stay in one place too long, as it could cause damage to wood or vinyl. To further avoid any mishaps, always check the manufacturer's warranty and guidelines before using a steam mop on these surfaces.
For this guide, we've consulted Bruce Vance, a veteran in the cleaning industry with over 30 years of experience. He's also served as the chairman of the residential cleaning technology advisory committee at the IICRC (Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification Institute). He has the following advice to share on how steam mops interact with various surfaces:
Originally many thought that steam mops would work on Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) floors as well, but recently manufacturers have discouraged their use since they can cause mold problems. Occasional use is probably fine, but regular use is questionable.
For hardwood floors, there is no problem using a steam mop on a site-finished polyurethane floor as long as the finish is intact. On factory-finished floors, the steam can drive water between the boards leading to dark lines forming along the edges of the boards over time.
Steam mops are generally safe on stone floors. However, steam mops should not be used on laminate floors as they can cause significant damage. Some of the newer laminates are more waterproof, but again check any manufacturer's instructions.
If you're thinking about getting a steam mop, your main question is probably how well it can tackle dirt. Based on our standardized tests, we discovered that the key to effective dirt removal is how efficiently a mop can apply force. The better it does this, the cleaner your floors will be.
Our tests revealed a striking difference in how well various steam mops removed stubborn jam stains. The top performers managed to clean more than 80% of heavily soiled areas with just three sweeps, while others left over half of the stain behind. We documented the stain removal process with photos after each pass, and these images are available in our rankings section for your reference. Choose a steam mop that excels in getting rid of tough dirt to keep your space spotless!
After reviewing our test data, it's clear that a steam mop's effectiveness at dirt removal is significantly influenced by how well the force applied by the user is transferred to it. A key factor is the placement of the mop's joint—the mechanism that allows it to pivot. Think about hand-wiping a table: you naturally place your hand in the center of the cloth for the most effective cleaning.
Similarly, for a steam mop, when the joint is near the mop's center, the force from your hand distributes more evenly. However, if the joint is located at the mop's edge, you'll find yourself pressing down on the extremity of the mop, which is less effective for removing dirt.
Additionally, the overall balance of the steam mop, determined by its center of gravity, plays a crucial role. Ideally, the center of gravity aligns with the straight line from the handle to the mop head. This alignment makes it easier to exert force onto the floor, thereby enhancing the mop's ability to lift dirt.
Initially, we believed that the temperature and material of the steam mop affected its cleaning efficiency, due to our efforts to standardize the pressure applied to the mop.
However, we faced situations where certain products couldn't remove much dirt even at high temperatures, or identical products from the same manufacturer had differences in performance. This led us to realize that even though we were applying the same pressure to the steam mop, the actual force it received varied.
Choosing the right steam mop is not only about how well it removes dirt and grime. The ability to handle the mop and it’s ease-of-use may be equally important!
A steam mop with a flexible mop head allows you to maneuver it easily, matching the movements of your wrist. The key to this flexibility lies in the joint's rotation axes. Models equipped with two axes—a joint for vertical movement and another for horizontal movement—offer the freedom to clean efficiently over larger areas. Conversely, mops with only one rotation axis are more restricted in their movement.
The control over steam release plays a significant role, especially in budget models where steam control is not in your hands, and some units keep emitting steam as long as they're plugged in. This could lead to steam output continuing even after unplugging, posing a risk to your flooring. For this reason, opting for models that offer onboard steam control is wise.
Button-operated steam mops are particularly recommended due to their ease of use, allowing for straightforward steam management without overexerting your hand. While trigger and pump-operated models also provide on-device steam control, they might lead to fatigue during extended use.
The pump system steam mop claims to be able to pump by the force of moving the mop, but in reality, you must control the force for the pump—requiring a bit more conscious effort. This may make cleaning less intuitive as you aren't sure if the water level is low or if something is wrong.
Unlike canister-type steam cleaners, which have larger tanks, steam mops come with smaller reservoirs. This means they can't run continuously for extended periods like 30 minutes. It's important to select a model based on the size of the area you need to clean.
For cleaning bathrooms and kitchens, 15 minutes is a good rule of thumb. Smaller spaces typically can be thoroughly cleaned in less than 15 minutes, and even larger bathrooms usually fit within this time frame.
However, for larger kitchens, especially those that are particularly dirty and might require changing the mop head midway, cleaning could exceed 15 minutes. In such instances, opting for a cleaning tool that can last longer is advisable.
If you use a steam mop frequently, ease of use is also important. Consider these three points: how to remove the mopping head, how to supply water, and the startup speed.
Naturally, when it's time to wash a dirty mop head, the last thing you want is to get your hands dirty. A design that allows you to remove the mop head by simply stepping on it means you can avoid direct contact with the dirt. It's worth checking for a model with a tag designed for foot operation.
However, even with such a tag, models where the mop head wraps around and covers both sides might pose a challenge. These double-sided mop heads are great for efficiency, letting you flip to a clean side mid-task, but caution is needed to avoid contact with dirt when removing them.
The water inlet on a steam mop is typically small, leading to spills when using a standard cup. A kitchen measuring cup could work, but a model that lets you attach the cup to the main body solves the issue of misplacing it and simplifies refilling. Some steam mops even allow for tank removal to add water, though dealing with the tank's lid can be cumbersome. For a seamless cleaning experience, opting for a model that accommodates an attachable water cup is recommended.
When you're ready to start cleaning, you'll want your steam mop to be ready as quickly as possible. The time it takes for steam to start flowing can vary significantly, ranging from less than 10 seconds to nearly 30 seconds. From practical use, it feels like there's hardly any wait with mops that produce steam within 20 seconds. Even a few seconds can make a noticeable difference if you're using the mop frequently.
A steam mop is mainly designed for cleaning floors, yet some models offer the versatility of converting into handheld steam cleaners. For those looking to tackle more than just floors, here are some considerations to keep in mind.
When converting a steam mop into a handheld steam cleaner, the process involves detaching the water supply section. Many models feature a one-touch button for easy detachment, while others may require sequentially removing the handle and mop head.
Although this might seem cumbersome if you aim to clean not just floors but also tackle areas like ovens and window rails frequently, selecting a model that allows for straightforward detachment can make a significant difference in the cleaning process.
A steam mop that doubles as a handheld device often includes a range of attachments, broadening the surfaces you can clean. With the right attachments, you can tackle virtually any water-washable area, including ovens, shower and window tracks, countertops, and walls.
Key attachments to look for include a steam nozzle designed for targeting tight spaces, a small brush for scrubbing away tough grime, and a triangle head ideal for efficiently cleaning flat surfaces like countertops. These accessories significantly enhance the mop's versatility and convenience, so they're worth considering in your selection.
Since steam is at a high temperature, be careful not to keep it pointed at the same place for too long.

The PowerFresh® Deluxe Scrubbing & Sanitizing Steam Mop 1806 from Bissell stands out for its optimal blend of cleaning power, user-friendliness, and durability, making it an excellent choice for tackling the stubborn grime commonly found on large kitchen and bathroom floors.
Its design ensures efficient force transmission due to the central placement of the mop, allowing it to clear about 80% of sticky jam with just three sweeps. Additionally, the mop head removal reveals the SpotBoost™ brush, perfect for dislodging stubborn dirt.
At a light 5.8 pounds, this steam mop scores high on operability with its self-standing design and a joint that provides smooth left and right movement. The steam control button located on the mop's body allows for immediate steam cessation post-use, reducing the potential for floor damage. Its steam duration of nearly 27 minutes is a significant advantage for cleaning extensive areas. However, it might not be the best fit for those seeking a versatile handheld steam cleaner for tasks beyond floor cleaning, such as oven and window cleaning.
Given its affordability and superior cleaning capabilities compared to traditional mops, the PowerFresh® Deluxe should be a top contender for anyone looking to upgrade their cleaning tools.

Shark's Steam And Scrub Mop S7001 stands out with its rotating mop feature, designed primarily for floor cleaning and aimed at those who appreciate the ease of steam control. This mop uniquely generates steam when tilted and stops when upright, eliminating the need for button pressing or trigger pulling. However, it's on the heavier side, weighing in at 7 pounds even without water, which could be a consideration for those needing to move it frequently between storage and use areas.
Its dirt removal capabilities are strong, effectively dealing with sticky substances like jam, clearing about 80% of such messes in three passes. Yet, when tackling very sticky residues, the rotating action may cause some resistance, feeling as though it's tugging on your arm—a factor that might not be as noticeable in regular cleaning tasks.
While its performance is commendable, it shares many strengths with the "PowerFresh® Deluxe Scrubbing & Sanitizing Steam Mop 1806" from Bissell, including cleaning efficiency and the convenience of steam control. When price is taken into account, the Bissell option may offer a better value.

The Steam Floor Mop 300CU from Reliable comes with not just a mop but also a floor brush and a carpet glider, making it a versatile choice for households with deep tile grooves or carpeted areas.
With a full tank, the steam lasts for about 19 minutes and 18 seconds, enough to thoroughly clean a small kitchen and bathroom or tackle a larger room. At 6.6 pounds, it's somewhat hefty, which may only be a concern when moving it between floors.
Its cleaning performance is strong against oil and mud stains, but jam stains proved more challenging, with roughly half remaining after three sweeps and a slight residue even after five. For particularly stubborn stains, switching to the floor brush might yield better results.
The compact, triangular mop head is adept at navigating tight spaces, making this mop a good choice for cleaning narrow areas or carpets. However, given its price, it's worth considering other options unless these specific features match your needs.

The Steam Mop GF-6610 from GorFanty is a standout choice for those valuing ease of use over the sheer power of dirt removal.
Weighing in at just 4.3 pounds before adding water, it's one of the lightest steam mops on the market. Features like its self-standing design and an on/off button for steam enhance its maneuverability, ensuring a hassle-free cleaning experience.
However, its dirt removal capabilities didn't meet the mark in our tests. After three passes, a significant amount of jam residue remained, and it struggled to fully eliminate oil stains. This shortfall is partly due to the mop's joint design, which complicates effective force application. For households with persistent or tough dirt, particularly in homes with children or older properties, we suggest considering alternative options.
Despite these drawbacks, its capacity to transform into a handheld cleaner, complete with six attachments, might still make it an attractive option for those in less dirt-prone environments wanting to explore the benefits of steam cleaning.

Bissell's PowerFresh® Scrubbing & Sanitizing Steam Mop 1940 is the go-to choice for those who place dirt removal at the top of their priority list.
Sharing the core design features with the "1806" model, such as a central joint and a low center of gravity, this model ensures effective force transmission across the mop. It stands out in its ability to tackle even the invisible stickiness of jam within three sweeps, outperforming the "1806" in dirt removal efficacy. The inclusion of the Flip-down Easy Scrubber enhances its functionality, allowing for simultaneous brushing and mopping.
However, it sets itself apart from the "1806" in terms of usability. The steam can be activated with a simple button press on the device after plugging in, and it offers three steam settings to cater to different cleaning needs. Yet, to cease steam production, one must unplug the device, which could pose a risk to heat-sensitive floors due to continuous steam emission until unplugged.
With its superior cleaning capabilities, especially on heat-resistant surfaces like ceramic tile or stone, the PowerFresh® Scrubbing & Sanitizing Steam Mop 1940 comes highly recommended for those focusing on thorough dirt removal.

Hoover's Steam Complete Pet WH21000 is perfect for those looking to clean more than just floors. Equipped with 10 tools and a removable water tank, it easily transforms into a handheld steam cleaner for tasks from stovetops to fabrics.
It performs well on floors, removing roughly 80% of jam stains with three swipes and leaving a slight oil residue, which shouldn't pose major issues for daily cleaning.
However, its steam time might be a concern. Even with an auxiliary tank for extended use, it runs for only about 12 minutes on a normal steam setting. While its adaptability is impressive, its short operation time might not suit those with larger spaces or very dirty areas.

Shark's Steam Mop S1000 appeals to those valuing lightness and cost-effectiveness. Its 3.9-pound frame makes it easy to handle and maneuver. The mop head attaches and detaches swiftly using a fastener and footstep tag.
Its cleaning performance, while decent, doesn't excel in removing tough dirt. It managed over half the jam in three swipes but struggled with colored oil, leaving stains and residue. Not ideal for oily kitchens. Usage time varies; it runs for about 14 minutes under normal use but may drop to just over 7 minutes with rapid movement.
Given its affordability, it's a solid entry-level choice for those new to steam mops.

PurSteam's 10-in-1 Steam Cleaner caters to those wanting a versatile and lightweight option. It includes 10 attachments, such as different-sized brushes and nozzles, making it suitable for a wide range of cleaning tasks. Weighing just 5.1 pounds before water is added, it's easy to maneuver.
A limitation is its steam control. While a dial adjusts steam intensity, turning it off requires unplugging the unit, posing a risk for accidents, especially when used as a handheld device without careful placement.
For those with small children, pets, or safety concerns regarding steam control, the slightly heavier Hoover may be a better choice.

The Black & Decker SteamMop + Glove 7in1 Complete Steam Cleaning Solution stands out for its user-friendly design. It features a comfortable handle and a button for easy steam control, minimizing finger fatigue. Its rapid start-up time of just over 16 seconds appeals to those who prefer immediate action.
However, its performance in dirt removal could be improved. Despite three attempts, it struggles to fully eliminate jam, oil, and mud stains—particularly notable with mud stains, which most competitors handle better within the same number of passes.
Although it includes a variety of attachments, for those prioritizing thorough cleaning, exploring alternatives might be more beneficial.

The Tineco Floor One S5 Steam Smart Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaner With Steam combines vacuuming and steam mopping, spraying steam onto the floor for the mop to wipe, performing well on general dirt and grease but less so on jam. Its dual function makes it heavy at 14 pounds, potentially cumbersome for some users.
Steam mode includes a countdown, taking about 30 seconds to start, which may test your patience compared to simpler stick cleaners.
For those prioritizing ease and efficiency in steam mopping, exploring other options might be advisable.

At mybest, we define the best steam mops as products that can effortlessly remove stubborn dirt — that's a given.
To identify these optimal steam mops, we've collected 13 top-selling models from well-known manufacturers and retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy. We rigorously tested them on five key aspects:
Products we tested
We conducted tests for each product to find ones capable of removing stubborn dirt and grime, specifically by eliminating the oiliness and stickiness of cooked food.
We marked a 10cm x 10cm square on a ceramic floor tile, evenly applied a set amount of dirt within the square, and let it set overnight. Then, we activated each product in its most powerful setting and moved the head back and forth five times. We photographed the dirt after each pass to document the amount removed in a single sweep. Following this, the tester reviewed each product, assigning points for each evaluated aspect, and determined each product's recommendation level.
The state of jam dropping (color, stickiness)
The state of mud dropping (color)
The state of colored oil dropping (color, sliminess)
<Type of dirt used>
Mud (a mixture of water and soil in a 1:2 ratio by weight): 0.007oz
Strawberry jam: 0.085fl oz
Colored oil: 0.042fl oz
<Test Method>
The stickiness of the jam and the sliminess of the oil is checked by placing 10 beads on the tile inclined at 90 degrees, and counting the number of beads that fall off

We define products that offer a quick startup as ones that can start cleaning immediately without making users wait.
We turned on the power to the steam mop, set the temperature, and then measured the time until it became actually usable. We scored it as recommended if the time to start producing steam is short, setting a maximum limit of 10 seconds to ensure there's no sense of waiting before cleaning can begin.
Standardize each product to the strongest mode
For models without a button to turn on steam, measure the time until it becomes usable after plugging in
Our team tested each product looking for models that are easy to use and allow cleaning as desired without causing stress.
Our testers examined each product, scoring them based on aspects related to usability, and quantified the recommended level of each product.
Does the main unit stand upright?
We checked for products that are easy to operate on the floor without being too heavy and that closely follow the movements of the hand.
In addition to measuring the actual weight of the main body without water, testers evaluated each product and scored them based on various factors related to fatigue resistance. These evaluations were then used to determine each product's recommended level, converting it into a score.
Is the main unit lightweight?
For a product to be used continuously over a long period, we looked for models that you can use without interruption, even in large kitchens and bathrooms.
We filled the main tank to the maximum with water and continuously emitted steam intermittently until all the water was depleted. We measured the time from when we began emitting steam until there was no more steam.
Fill each product with water up to its maximum capacity
