How We Tested the Products

Scroll to testing method
We gathered the 8 bestselling Robot Mops and put them through rigorous testing.
  1. High performance (suction)

    1
    High performance (suction)

Our goal was to identify robots capable of thoroughly vacuuming every corner of a room. We scattered various amounts of different types of debris across a room measuring approximately 218 square feet and then assessed the suction performance. We weighed the dustbin before and after running the robot in standard mode, calculating the amount of debris collected based on the weight difference. These are the types of debris we used.Blue sand: 17 gramsSoil: 16 gramsCrumbs: 4.5 gramsYarn to simulate house dust/pet hair: 0.3 gramsHuman hair: 0.2 gramsWe also spread a small amount of debris in hard-to-clean areas such as around furniture legs, behind curtains, and on carpets. We then ran the robot in standard mode and calculated the amount of debris collected. Below are the types of debris used for these specific areas. Around furniture legs:Soil: 0.5 gramsYarn to simulate pet hair: 0.1 gramsBehind curtains:Soil: 2.5 gramsOn carpets:Blue sand: 40 gramsRobots that could efficiently vacuum both open floors as well as these challenging areas received high ratings.

  2. High performance (wiping)

    2
    High performance (wiping)

To find robots that can effectively wipe away floor grime, we conducted a mopping-performance test. Here are the details.Test Conditions: We sprayed a mixture of water and fluorescent paint in a 4:1 ratio evenly across a 90x120 cm acrylic panel. The robots were then run in their standard mopping mode.Robots that could quickly and thoroughly clean the sticky grime received high marks.

  3. Obstacle Avoidance

    3
    Obstacle Avoidance

We evaluated the robots' ability to avoid obstacles to ensure they won't damage furniture or wet carpets. The evaluation was based on the criteria below.Maximum impact force when colliding with table legs during cleaningNumber of noticeable collisions with the tableNumber of collisions strong enough to move light furnitureWhether the robot gets tangled in electrical cordsAbility to avoid slippers placed in the room after mappingAbility to climb over thresholds or ledgesWhether the robot falls off ledgesWhether the robot has features to avoid wetting carpets while moppingBelow are the test conditions for table-leg collisions. Test Conditions: We placed vibration sensors on all four legs of a table and set them to record data every half-second. The impact on the table legs was recorded during the High-Performance Suction test.Robots that excelled in these areas were rated highly for their obstacle avoidance capabilities.

  4. Mapping Performance

    4
    Mapping Performance

We tested how easy it is for the robot to take care of cleaning specific areas at specified times. Below are the criteria for how the evaluation was scored.Ability to set no-mop zonesPresence of mapping features and the ability to divide rooms in detailHow detailed the scheduling function can be setWhether it supports control via an app or remote control

  5. Low Maintenance

    5
    Low Maintenance

Since the point of getting a robot mop is to save time on cleaning, you'll want one that doesn't require much maintenance. We evaluated ease of maintenance based on the these criteria.Presence of a docking stationAutomatic mop-cleaning featuresWhether hair gets tangled in the brushAbility to dispose of trash without direct contact

  6. Low Noise

    6
    Low Noise

If you're planning to use your robot mop while you're at home, you should think about the noise level. We conducted a test to evaluate how quiet each robot is; here are the details below. Test Conditions: In a quiet room with a baseline noise level of about 37 dB, we ran the robot mops in their standard mode and measured the noise level three times from a distance of three feet. After finding the average of the three measurements, we gave high ratings to robots that are quiet enough to not be disruptive when you're in the same room.

Why Buy a Robot Mop?

You might wonder if it's worth spending hundreds of dollars on a robot mop, especially if you're already good at keeping your home clean. Here are some benefits to consider.

Cut Down on Cleaning Time

Cut Down on Cleaning Time

The biggest perk of having a robot mop is the drastic reduction in cleaning time. After all, it can easily take up an hour or more of your precious time to mop by hand, including vacuuming and mopping the floors, throwing away the trash, and washing the mop - if you're even cleaning all that thoroughly to begin with.

With a robot mop, however, you can set a cleaning schedule through an app and let it do its thing without even having to turn it on yourself. Plus, you don't have to empty the trash after every session; if your model has a built-in dust station, you'll only need to empty it once every couple of months.

To top that off, recent models even come with self-cleaning mops. Just fill the tank with water, and you'll get a clean mop after every cleaning session. Assuming you clean three times a week, you could save over 150 hours a year thanks to a robot mop's handy features. Why not spend that time doing things you actually enjoy?

Hiroki Tamaru
Head of HVAC and Vacuums at mybestHiroki Tamaru

There used to be separate robot models for vacuuming and mopping, like Roomba and Braava. But nowadays, many brands offer dual-purpose models which save space and are more convenient overall.

Cleans as Well as Manual Mops and Vacuums

Cleans as Well as Manual Mops and Vacuums

Automated cleaning is convenient, but it's pointless if it leaves behind traces of dirt and debris which you'll have to clean up by yourself anyway. While early versions of robot mops lacked in performance, modern models can handle everyday grime just fine. The days of lugging around a heavy vacuum cleaner are over!

Another plus is that robot mops can easily reach under furniture where traditional vacuums struggle.

Hiroki Tamaru
Head of HVAC and Vacuums at mybestHiroki Tamaru

However, robot mops aren't perfect and may not pick up every single piece of debris by themselves. For those occasional spots that need extra attention it's good to keep a handheld vacuum cleaner on standby.

How to Choose Robot Mops

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Robot Mops.

1

For Perfectly Clean Corners, Aim for Products $300 and Up

When you're investing in a robot mop, you obviously want one that won't leave any dirt behind after cleaning. To help you out, we replicated a dirty room to test this. Here's what we found out about cleaning performance.

For Under $300, Expect Subpar Carpet Cleaning and Mopping Performance

For Under $300, Expect Subpar Carpet Cleaning and Mopping Performance

Our tests showed that the higher the price, the better the cleaning performance. While all price ranges could handle hard floors well, there were noticeable differences when it came to the tougher cleaning tasks like carpets, the area around furniture legs, and sticky messes.

If you have a lot of carpets or don't want to do any touch-up cleaning afterward, we recommend going for a model that costs at least $300. The models in this price range managed to clean even the tricky spots and sticky messes effectively.

On the other hand, if you opt for a model under $300, be prepared to manually clean up the spots it misses; prioritizing low cost when choosing a robot mop may mean that you'll need to clean up after it.

There's Not Much Difference in Cleaning Performance Above $300

There's Not Much Difference in Cleaning Performance Above $300

When you're looking at robot mops that cost more than $300, you don't need to worry about the cleaning performance. Any model in this price range will have the capability to clean difficult areas and sticky spots.

For instance, we didn't find a significant difference in cleaning performance between a model priced around $400 and one that costs about $1,600. Even if you go for a high-end model, don't expect a dramatic improvement in dirt suction.

Hiroki Tamaru
Head of HVAC and Vacuums at mybestHiroki Tamaru

Does that mean you should just go for the cheapest option if you're spending more than $300? Not necessarily. The price of a robot mop heavily depends on its features. Check out the rest of our guide to find a robot mop with the features that suit you best.

2

All Models Had Minimal Collisions With Furniture

When introducing a robot mop into your home, it's natural to be concerned about it bumping into and damaging your precious furniture. We recorded the impact on table legs and found that even budget-friendly models didn't cause any concerning collisions.

Measuring and Comparing the Impact on Furniture

Measuring and Comparing the Impact on Furniture

To test the obstacle-avoidance capabilities of robot mops, we set up vibration sensors on table legs and recorded the vibrations every half-second.

Budget Models Do Bump Into Furniture, but Not Dangerously So

Budget Models Do Bump Into Furniture, but Not Dangerously So

Our tests showed that higher-priced, high-performance models had fewer impacts with table legs. However, even the budget-friendly models didn't bump into the legs hard enough to risk damaging or knocking over furniture.

Additionally, all of the models were able to recognize walls and slow down in advance. In terms of collisions with furniture and walls, there's no need to worry, regardless of the price range you choose.

Hiroki Tamaru
Head of HVAC and Vacuums at mybestHiroki Tamaru

It's worth noting that the lack of significant differences might be because we tested relatively high-spec models with mopping abilities. When we tested out robot vacuums which don't have mopping functions, we did find some models that had stronger impacts.

3

Opt for Models Over $400 to Completely Automate Your Cleaning

Opt for Models Over $400 to Completely Automate Your Cleaning

So what accounts for the price difference between robot mops, if there's not a huge difference in cleaning and obstacle avoidance performance? The answer is functionality. Here, we categorize robot mops into three types based on their price range: low-end, mid-priced, and high-end. We'll discuss what functions each type offers and who might need them.

For Automated Cleaning All Week, Choose a Model With Detailed Scheduling

For Automated Cleaning All Week, Choose a Model With Detailed Scheduling

If you're investing in a robot mop, you'll probably want it to start cleaning automatically without having to press a button every time. While all models offer some sort of scheduling feature, our tests revealed varying levels of customization.

Some models only allow you to set the time, meaning they'll run at the same time every day. So, if you want to adjust the cleaning time based on the day of the week, you're out of luck.

Robot mops that allow you to set both the day and time offer more flexibility. For example, you can set it to start cleaning in the morning on weekdays and later in the day on weekends, aligning the cleaning schedule with your lifestyle.

Mapping Functionality Is Essential for Multi-Room Cleaning

Mapping Functionality Is Essential for Multi-Room Cleaning

Robot mops are a lifesaver for those who want to automate cleaning throughout the house, but it can be nerve-wracking to put your faith in a machine. This is especially true if you want it to clean multiple rooms. Without mapping functionality, the robot might run out of battery mid-clean or struggle to travel from one room to another.

Mapping functionality allows a robot to recognize the shape of a room and the layout of furniture, creating a map to work out the most efficient route to clean. It will also know which rooms it has already cleaned, so it won't get lost when moving to the next room.

However, you might not need the mapping feature if you live in a small space with fewer rooms to navigate, such as a studio apartment.

Hiroki Tamaru
Head of HVAC and Vacuums at mybestHiroki Tamaru

Mapping also lets you focus the cleaning on specific rooms. For instance, if you want to prioritize high-traffic areas like the kitchen or living room, you can select those rooms in the settings for a more efficient cleaning session.

A "Recharge & Resume" Feature Is Handy for Homes Larger Than 1,500 Square Feet

A "Recharge & Resume" Feature Is Handy for Homes Larger Than 1,500 Square Feet

Robot mops are rechargeable, which means they can potentially run out of battery while cleaning. This is especially true for larger homes exceeding 1,500 square feet, where a full charge may not be enough to clean the entire space.

While battery life is important when choosing a robot mop, if you have a large home with several rooms to clean, it's better to check whether it has a recharge & resume feature.

Most robot mops already come with an auto-charge feature that sends them back to their charging station when the battery is low, but "recharge & resume" allows the robot to automatically continue cleaning from where it left off after recharging.

With this handy feature, you won't have to worry about battery life, making it a must-have for larger homes.

Look For Products With an Auto-Empty Function to Cut Down on Trash Duty

Look For Products With an Auto-Empty Function to Cut Down on Trash Duty

Automating your cleaning can still be a hassle if you have to frequently empty the trash compartment. That's why robot mops with an auto-empty feature are recommended for those who want to reduce the frequency of trash disposal.

Robot mops with auto-empty will have a large charging station known as a "dust station". It collects the dirt from the robot into a large bag, reducing the need for trash disposal to once every one to two months.

Hiroki Tamaru
Head of HVAC and Vacuums at mybestHiroki Tamaru

Compared to traditional upright or stick vacuums, robot vacuums tend to have smaller dustbin openings, making them harder to empty. So, not only does auto-empty reduce frequency, but it also makes the whole process easier.

Consider a High-End Model Which Can Clean the Mop by Itself

Consider a High-End Model Which Can Clean the Mop by Itself

A mid-range model with all of the features mentioned above will likely meet most of your cleaning needs. However, you'll still need to clean the mop manually after use.

High-end models priced over $900 often come with an auto-cleaning feature. Instead of hand-washing the dirty mop, you'll only need to dispose of the dirty water collected in the wastewater tank.

Choosing a high-end model with an auto-cleaning feature not only significantly reduces post-cleaning work but also ensures that the mop is always clean for the next use.

Hiroki Tamaru
Head of HVAC and Vacuums at mybestHiroki Tamaru

While this will bump up the initial cost, auto-cleaning is a feature worth investing in, especially if the idea of manually cleaning the mop each time seems like a hassle.

For Homes With Pets, Models With Rubber Brushes Are the Way to Go

If you're a pet owner, you're probably no stranger to dealing with the pet hair scattered around your home. Here, we'll introduce products that are less prone to getting tangled with long hairs.

Rubber Offers High Suction Power Without the Tangle

Rubber Offers High Suction Power Without the Tangle

Automating your cleaning is all well and good, but if your pet's hair keeps getting caught, you'll end up spending precious time cleaning out the brush. Our tests showed that brushes made of rubber are less likely to tangle with pet hair.

Pet hair can easily get tangled in the small gaps between the bristles of the brush. With rubber brushes, there are no such gaps for pet hair to get caught in, making them less prone to tangling.

And don't worry—opting for a rubber brush doesn't mean you'll need to compromise on suction power. This is especially beneficial for those with long-haired pets, as it will make a significant difference in how often you'll need to detangle the brush.

5

Have a Lot of Carpets? Look for a Mop-Lifting Feature

If your robot mop ventures onto a carpet while it's wet-mopping, you'll end up with a wet carpet. While some products are able to avoid carpets, it's better to opt for a robot mop with a mop-lifting feature. Here's why mop lifting can be useful.

No Need to Adjust Settings or Swap Out Mop Pads

No Need to Adjust Settings or Swap Out Mop Pads

Some mopping robots have a feature where the mop lifts up if it detects a carpet during its wet-mopping cycle.

This allows for a seamless transition from wet mopping to its suction-only mode, making robots with this feature ideal for homes with a lot of carpets.

Hiroki Tamaru
Head of HVAC and Vacuums at mybestHiroki Tamaru

If you opt for a model without mop-lifting that only avoids carpets during wet mopping, you'll run into two issues.

First, you'll need to set up "no-mop zones" via the smartphone app. While the task itself is simple, accurately setting the zones based on the carpet's location and size on the displayed map can be a bit of a chore.

Secondly, because the robot avoids carpets while wet mopping, if you want it to clean the carpet you'll have to manually remove the mop and set the robot to suction-only mode.

Only High-End Roborock and Roomba Models Offer Rubber Brushes and Mop Lift

Only High-End Roborock and Roomba Models Offer Rubber Brushes and Mop Lift

Out of the products we looked at, only high-end models from Roborock and Roomba offer features like rubber brushes and mop lifting.

For instance, the Roomba Combo J7+ keeps the price down by not offering an automatic mop-cleaning feature. However, it does cover all the basic features like automatic dirt disposal and mapping, making it a good choice for those looking for a balance between functionality and price.

On the other hand, the Roborock S7 Max V Ultra comes with rubber brushes, a mop-lifting feature, and even an automatic mop-cleaning feature. It's the most feature-rich model and is especially recommended for those who don't want to compromise when choosing a robot mop. If you're looking to fully automate your home cleaning, be sure to check out this product.

6

If You Work from Home, Opt for Models With Noise Levels Below 65dB

If you're planning to use a robot mop while you're at home, you should consider a quieter model. Here, we'll discuss what noise level is considered quiet and which products fit the bill.

Fine for Relaxing at Home, but Not Ideal for Remote Working

Fine for Relaxing at Home, but Not Ideal for Remote Working

If you live in a small space or have noise-sensitive pets, you might be worried about how much noise a robot mop will make.

After comparing the noise levels of various models, we found that anything below 65dB is unobtrusive enough for general relaxation in the same room. However, even low-level noise can be distracting when you're trying to focus, whether studying or working from home, so it's best to avoid using the robot mop at those times.

If you mainly plan to use the robot mop in rooms you're not in—say, running it on the second floor while you're on the first or only using it when you're out—you probably won't need to worry about the noise level.

Hiroki Tamaru
Head of HVAC and Vacuums at mybestHiroki Tamaru

The quietest model we found was Braava, but it's designed exclusively for wet mopping. Roomba, which you might use alongside it for suction, is quite noisy, so might not be the best fit if you're looking for a quiet option. For a quieter model when dealing with both suction and wet mopping, we recommend the three products shown in the image above.

Smart Enough to Avoid Obstacles and Mop Without Wetting the Carpet

Chinese brand Roborock, known for their robot vacuums and cordless cleaners, launched the S7 MaxV Ultra in 2022. This model combines the mop lift-up feature of the S7 with a multifunctional dock that allows for automatic trash collection and mop cleaning.

What stands out is its exceptional ability to avoid obstacles. It didn't bump into table legs at all and even recognized and avoided slippers placed in its path after mapping. Plus, thanks to the mop lift-up feature, it transitions seamlessly to suction without wetting the carpet. No need to fiddle with setting up water-wipe restricted areas or attaching and detaching the mop.

However, be cautious of a few things. While it can avoid electrical cords if recognized in advance, it can't free itself if it gets caught. It can also mistake curtains for walls, preventing it from cleaning deeper areas. Before operating, make sure no cords are hanging on the floor and that curtains are open.

Nevertheless, the cleaning performance is top-notch. Although it couldn't clean behind curtains, it was able to efficiently suck up any debris around furniture legs. When it detects a carpet, it automatically increases suction power for effective carpet cleaning. In our mop performance tests, it even managed to wipe away stubborn fluorescent paint.

Pet hair didn’t get tangled in its rubber brushes, which is a plus for pet owners. Coupled with automatic trash collection and mop cleaning, it requires almost zero maintenance.

Despite boasting such high specs, it operates at an average of 59.5 decibels, making it one of the quietest in its class. It's unlikely to bother you even if you're home while it's running.

This product automates every aspect of suction, mopping, and maintenance. If you're looking to make a purchase you won't regret, this is the one device we can recommend to everyone.

ECOVACS, a brand who aim to support smart homes using robots like vacuum cleaners, window cleaners, and air purifiers, brings you the DEEBOT X1 Omni. This model not only features automatic trash collection and mop cleaning but also comes with a hot air mop-drying function.

While Roborock excels in intelligence and functionality, the DEEBOT X1 Omni shines in suction power that leaves no nook uncleaned. Especially around furniture legs, it cleans so well that you can't visually detect any leftover debris. Its mopping performance is also excellent, and it was able to remove fluorescent paint stains efficiently with its two rotating brushes.

On the flip side, it only managed to suck up about 35 percent of the debris scattered on carpets. It can clean the surface well, but it doesn't have the power to clean deep into the carpet.

Its collision avoidance is almost on par with Roborock. However, it lacks a mop lift-up feature, but it avoids any carpets it detects while mopping instead. To vacuum the carpet, you'll need to remove the mop and run the machine again, adding an extra step to the process.

As you'd expect from a high-end model, it comes with mapping and scheduling features, making automation a breeze.

In terms of maintenance, the brush isn't designed to handle wads of pet hair, so expect some tangles. While trash collection and mop cleaning are automatic, you'll have to manually remove any tangled-up hair from the brush.

While it doesn't quite match up to Roborock, its average noise level of 62.4dB is pretty impressive, meaning it's well-suited for use while you're at home.

Though it falls short in dealing with carpets and handling pet hair, it excels at cleaning hard floors. If you live in a home without carpets and want something that can thoroughly mop your hardwood or tile floors, we highly recommend this product.

The New Roomba Tackles Both Pet Hair and Carpets With Ease

iRobot, a long-time leader in the robot vacuum industry, has finally released the Roomba Combo j7+, a model designed for both vacuuming and mopping. One of its key features is the lift-up function, which raises the mop when it detects a carpet.

The high-powered suction is also a major draw, capable of vacuuming all types of flooring, including deep into carpets.

However, it did leave traces of debris around one of the four furniture legs as well as on obstacle-free floors, giving the impression that it couldn't cover every single nook and cranny in just one cleaning cycle. That said, if you run it regularly, this shouldn't be much of an issue.

Its mopping performance is excellent, removing the fluorescent paint stains in just three minutes. While some traces remained in our tests, it's safe to say that it’s able to handle everyday messes effectively.

There were no major impacts when navigating around furniture, and it easily freed itself when caught on cords. Plus, it automatically switches to suction-only mode when it detects a carpet during mopping, so you don't have to worry about it getting stuck in one place.

The rubber brushes didn't tangle with pet hair, making it a good choice for homes with shedding pets. While you'll need to clean the mop manually, maintenance is generally minimal.

The downside is the noise level, averaging at 72 decibels, making it one of the loudest models we've tested. It might be distracting if you're in the same room, so it's better to run it when you're out.

If you're looking for a device that can handle both hard floors and carpets without breaking the bank, this is a good one to consider.

Powerful Mopping Performance Is a Plus, but Beware if You Have Lots of Carpets

Shark, known for their upright and stick vacuums, has created the Matrix Plus 2-in-1. The automatic trash collection feature is bagless, so there's no need to purchase paper bags for the dust station.

Its ability to avoid collisions is impressive; it barely touched table legs and operated gently. However, this made it difficult for the robot to clean deeply into corners, around furniture legs, and behind curtains, which impacted its suction rating.

If you're planning to mop in a room with carpets, you'll need to set up a no-mop zone in advance, or else it will get your carpets wet. While setting this up on the smartphone app is straightforward, getting it perfectly aligned with the actual layout of the room may require multiple test runs, which can be a hassle.

That said, its mopping performance is impressive. Thanks to its vibrating mop, it cleaned so well that you wouldn't know fluorescent paint had been spilled. It can handle grime and stickiness as effectively as scrubbing the floor by hand.

Although the brush isn't made of rubber, it's relatively resistant to tangling with hair, making it suitable for pet owners who don't want to have to detangle the brush frequently.

With a docking station on par with top-tier models, it's also attractively priced. While it may not be perfect in every cleaning aspect, if you have a room with few obstacles and carpets and you want to leave the mopping to a robot, this is a product worth considering.

Affordable Yet Effective Cleaning, Ideal for Those Who Don’t Need Specific Room Settings

Despite the E5 being marketed as an entry-level model from Roborock, it's packed with appealing features like being able to automatically resume cleaning from where it left off and the ability to increase suction power when it detects a carpet.

Its suction power is on par with higher-end models. It efficiently cleaned not just obstacle-free floors but also around furniture legs and carpets. The robot also performed well in mopping tasks. Although it took a bit longer, it was able to clean our fluorescent paint stains effectively.

While it does have mapping capabilities, they don't match those of the higher-end models. The generated map doesn't support detailed room division or the setting of no-entry and no-mop zones. Additionally, it's best to avoid using the mopping feature in rooms with carpets, as it will cross over and get them wet while mopping.

If you don't need detailed settings like no-mop zones or specific cleaning areas and just want a device that can clean up dirt and debris in your room, or if you're looking for something that can be installed in a small space, this is a product you'll want to consider.

Note that the corresponding app is Xiaomi's Mi Home app, not Roborock's, so be careful that you install the correct app.

No App Integration and Struggles With Deep Carpet Cleaning

ILIFE, known for their diverse range of vacuums, offers the V8s as part of their V series, which is particularly good for homes with pet hair. Thanks to its brushless design, it can suck up hair without it getting tangled in the brush.

Although it's a budget-friendly model without mapping features, setting it to the programmed mode allows it to clean the perimeter and then make regular trips back and forth in a zig-zag. In fact, its performance on obstacle-free floors was almost indistinguishable from models with mapping capabilities, so it should work just fine in smaller rooms.

However, while it managed to clean hard floors, including around furniture legs and behind curtains, it struggled with carpets. It only managed to clean the surface debris, making it less ideal for homes with many carpets. If you're considering this product, you might want to get an additional vacuum to use separately.

Its mopping performance is good, but it tends to conclude the mopping operation before it has finished thoroughly cleaning. While it can handle minor stains, it may struggle with tougher messes like food spills.

The lack of app integration is a downside; you can only operate it via a remote control or buttons on the unit itself. Additionally, you can't set different times for different days of the week in the scheduling feature. So be careful when picking a time, or you might get woken up on a weekend morning!

Nevertheless, if you don’t have many carpets and only plan to use it in a limited number of rooms, this could be an option worth considering.

This Mop-Only Machine Is Ideal if You Already Own a Vacuum

The Braava Jet M6 is a mopping-only robot from iRobot. Since it doesn't have suction capabilities, pairing it with a vacuum robot like a Roomba is essential if you also want a robot to pick up any debris.

When it comes to mopping performance, it's not far behind top-tier products. It takes a bit of time but did a thorough job of cleaning our fluorescent paint stains. However, this also means that as a mopping-only model, its performance is on par with dual-purpose models, making it less compelling as a standalone purchase.

It integrates with the iRobot app, allowing for detailed settings like mapping, no-entry zones, and day-specific scheduling. This means you can pretty much set it and forget it for mopping tasks. However, during testing, it often struggled to return to its charging dock. If you plan to run it while you're out, it's a good idea to make sure that it has returned properly when you get back.

While it tends to bump into things a bit more forcefully compared to other mopping robots, it's not enough to damage or knock over furniture. It is also designed not to go over carpets, reducing the risk of accidental wetting. On the flip side, it can't handle even small changes in elevation, so it might turn back when encountering a slope.

If you already own a suction-only machine like a Roomba, adding this to your cleaning toolkit could be well worth it.

Lots of Missed Spots, so Don't Expect Fully Automated Cleaning

The SpinWave Wet and Dry Robotic Vacuum is a dual-purpose model from Bissell, a company known for their cleaning appliances like vacuums and carpet cleaners. As the name suggests, this model features two large rotating mop pads that stick out of the device.

Even among budget-friendly options, this product struggles when it comes to cleaning performance. While it does a decent job on unobstructed flooring, it leaves much to be desired when cleaning behind curtains, around furniture legs, and on carpets. You'll likely need to do some cleaning yourself if you plan on relying solely on this robot.

The mopping function also falls short, seeming to spread dirt around rather than actually picking it up. It particularly struggles with tougher grime like food spills, sticky floors, and mud.

While the app allows for detailed scheduling, it lacks features like mapping and no-entry zones. If you have a large or complex space, the robot might run out of battery before it finishes cleaning.

One upside is that it automatically avoids carpets while mopping. However, the waste tank for mopping has an extremely small capacity and fills up quickly. Therefore, it's recommended to first run the robot in suction mode to clean the entire room and then switch to mopping mode for your hard floors and tiles.

High performance (suction)

High performance (suction)

Our goal was to identify robots capable of thoroughly vacuuming every corner of a room. We scattered various amounts of different types of debris across a room measuring approximately 218 square feet and then assessed the suction performance. We weighed the dustbin before and after running the robot in standard mode, calculating the amount of debris collected based on the weight difference. These are the types of debris we used.

  • Blue sand: 17 grams
  • Soil: 16 grams
  • Crumbs: 4.5 grams
  • Yarn to simulate house dust/pet hair: 0.3 grams
  • Human hair: 0.2 grams

We also spread a small amount of debris in hard-to-clean areas such as around furniture legs, behind curtains, and on carpets. We then ran the robot in standard mode and calculated the amount of debris collected. Below are the types of debris used for these specific areas.

Around furniture legs:

  • Soil: 0.5 grams
  • Yarn to simulate pet hair: 0.1 grams

Behind curtains:

  • Soil: 2.5 grams

On carpets:

  • Blue sand: 40 grams

Robots that could efficiently vacuum both open floors as well as these challenging areas received high ratings.

2

High performance (wiping)

High performance (wiping)

To find robots that can effectively wipe away floor grime, we conducted a mopping-performance test. Here are the details.

Test Conditions:

We sprayed a mixture of water and fluorescent paint in a 4:1 ratio evenly across a 90x120 cm acrylic panel. The robots were then run in their standard mopping mode.

Robots that could quickly and thoroughly clean the sticky grime received high marks.

3

Obstacle Avoidance

Obstacle Avoidance

We evaluated the robots' ability to avoid obstacles to ensure they won't damage furniture or wet carpets.

The evaluation was based on the criteria below.

  • Maximum impact force when colliding with table legs during cleaning
  • Number of noticeable collisions with the table
  • Number of collisions strong enough to move light furniture
  • Whether the robot gets tangled in electrical cords
  • Ability to avoid slippers placed in the room after mapping
  • Ability to climb over thresholds or ledges
  • Whether the robot falls off ledges
  • Whether the robot has features to avoid wetting carpets while mopping

Below are the test conditions for table-leg collisions.

Test Conditions:

We placed vibration sensors on all four legs of a table and set them to record data every half-second. The impact on the table legs was recorded during the High-Performance Suction test.

Robots that excelled in these areas were rated highly for their obstacle avoidance capabilities.

4

Mapping Performance

Mapping Performance

We tested how easy it is for the robot to take care of cleaning specific areas at specified times.

Below are the criteria for how the evaluation was scored.

  • Ability to set no-mop zones
  • Presence of mapping features and the ability to divide rooms in detail
  • How detailed the scheduling function can be set
  • Whether it supports control via an app or remote control
5

Low Maintenance

Low Maintenance

Since the point of getting a robot mop is to save time on cleaning, you'll want one that doesn't require much maintenance.

We evaluated ease of maintenance based on the these criteria.

  • Presence of a docking station
  • Automatic mop-cleaning features
  • Whether hair gets tangled in the brush
  • Ability to dispose of trash without direct contact
6

Low Noise

Low Noise

If you're planning to use your robot mop while you're at home, you should think about the noise level. We conducted a test to evaluate how quiet each robot is; here are the details below.

Test Conditions:

In a quiet room with a baseline noise level of about 37 dB, we ran the robot mops in their standard mode and measured the noise level three times from a distance of three feet.

After finding the average of the three measurements, we gave high ratings to robots that are quiet enough to not be disruptive when you're in the same room.
