We tested the suction power of each vacuum on four different types of surfaces. We started with wood and composite flooring. We scattered 0.75 ounces of debris on the floor and passed each vacuum over it once on regular strength, or its equivalent if there is no such mode. We checked if the vacuum cleaned the middle of the floor and up against the walls and looked for small debris that had fallen from the brush. The product got a high rating if all the debris was cleared away. We evaluated products with a single brush that can be used on any flooring more highly than those that require you to change the main brush when switching surfaces. We used the following types of debris in our test:Colored sandDirtCrumbsYarn cut into tiny pieces to mimic dustHairFluffy yarn cut into small pieces to mimic pet hair
Next, we tested each product on tile. We scattered 0.75 ounces of debris on the floor and passed each vacuum over it once on regular strength, or its equivalent if there is no such mode. Moving on to carpet, we started by testing the vacuums on low pile carpet. Specifically, we used a Langsted rug from IKEA. We scattered 0.75 ounces of debris on the floor and passed each vacuum over it once on regular strength, or its equivalent if there is no such mode. We checked if the vacuum cleaned the middle of the floor and up against the walls and looked for small debris that had fallen from the brush. The main draw of going cordless is to make your vacuum easier to use, so you might as well maximize this benefit. Thus, we tested how user-friendly each product was. We created an area to be cleaned that had two sofas and a table in it. We then had five testers try using each product on regular mode. We tested how easy it was to use each vacuum when moving in a straight line, turning, cleaning around the legs of the table and sofas, and cleaning under the sofa, covering all the key factors. We evaluated each product based on the following criteria:Does it move smoothly in a straight line?Is it easy to turn?Is it easy to use around the legs of furniture?Does it feel light when lifted?
If you use your cordless vacuum for too long, the battery will die, and it’ll stop working. We tested the battery life of each product to ensure you can clean even an ample space on one charge. We confirmed that each vacuum was fully charged, ran it on normal or the equivalent mode, and tracked how long it ran before turning off. The longer it lasted, the better.
Especially if you use your cordless vacuum daily, you'll want it to be a hassle-free experience. Functionality makes a big difference, so we tested each product for it.We tested each vacuum on the following criteria, weighted differently depending on their importance when using a cordless vacuum, and added up each product's score. Is the vacuum light? Can you clean out the dust canister in one step?Do hair and fur get tangled? How much can the canister hold? Can the canister hold multiple cleanings worth of debris? How accurately can you check the remaining battery? Can the vacuum stand on its own?Is the brush self-propelled?
Vacuums are generally noisy, but you’d still like yours to be as quiet as possible, so we tested the noise level of each product. We conducted the test in a quiet room. We measured the noise level of each vacuum in each mode from three feet away from the motor. Ideally, it should be quiet enough not to impede conversation.

Despite the increased popularity of cordless options, many people still use traditional vacuums. Is there a reason to cut the cord?
The best thing about one of these vacuums is that you don’t have to deal with a cord. In addition to vacuuming the floor, you can use it seamlessly for your sofa, curtains, and car.
Not only that, but cordless vacuum cleaners are lightweight. Contrary to upright types, which weigh 13 to 18 pounds, cordless vacuums only weigh about five to eight, making them comfortable to use daily.
If you have a cordless vacuum, you can take it out as soon as you notice something you need to clean and take care of it in a matter of seconds.
Heavy-duty cleaning may still require a traditional upright vacuum. At the other end of the spectrum, robot vacuums provide even more freedom via their automated features. Check out our buying guide on the best vacuum cleaners for help deciding what kind of vacuum cleaner is best for you.
While cordless vacuums aren’t restricted in terms of proximity to an outlet, they are limited by their battery life. When the first products hit the market, their batteries didn’t last long enough to serve as your main vacuum.
Cordless vacuum batteries have been getting better and better. Taking Dyson as an example, their V6, released in 2015, had a maximum battery life of 20 minutes. However, their V8, which is still popular today, lasts up to 40 minutes. Their newest model, the V15 detect, can be used for a whole hour.
Of course, it depends on how big your house is, the layout of your furniture, and how thoroughly you clean it, but for many people, 30 minutes is enough to vacuum the whole house. Now that cordless vacuums have longer-lasting batteries, there’s never been a better time to make the switch.
Here are the points to remember when choosing the best cordless vacuum.
We tested various products to find the best cordless vacuum on the market. We discovered that Dyson products performed well on several fronts, so if you don’t know which company to go with, look for a Dyson vacuum.
Dyson’s best attribute is suction power. For this article, we tested each product on wood floors, tile, low pile carpet, and high pile carpet. Only Dyson performed exceptionally on all four. Their secret is their two main brushes.
The Motorbar Cleaner Head has a row of brushes that pull the hair out of your carpet. The other attachment is the Fluffy Cleaner Head, which looks like a paint roller and works well on hard surfaces like wood and tile. It picks up large and small debris and leaves nothing behind.
You might prefer just one attachment that works for any debris and surface, but we feel confident that Dyson is as good as it gets in the current market.
Dyson's incredible suction power helps you clean more efficiently. If your vacuum lacks suction power, you'll have to run the vacuum over the same place multiple times, leading to longer cleaning times. No matter how good your vacuum's battery life is, it might not be enough if it takes too long to do the job.
By the same token, if your vacuum has excellent suction power but a lackluster battery, you won't be able to clean your entire house. Dyson excels in both areas so that you can vacuum your whole house quickly.
Have you ever had hair or pet fur get stuck in your vacuum? You can combat this problem by choosing the proper attachment. We found that brush rollers and attachments with rubber fins inside effectively vacuum up hair and yarn without letting it get tangled.
On the other hand, standard traditional brushes got tangled up with hair in an instant. When it comes to Dyson, both their Motorbar Cleaner Head and Fluffy Cleaner Head are built to avoid hair entanglements.
Most cordless vacuum cleaners use a cyclone filter. Unlike those that use paper bags, you don’t have to buy or replace any disposable products, but you do have to clean the filter. We can divide these filters into those that are in the cyclone cylinder itself, and exhaust filters.
When debris is vacuumed up, it enters the cyclone cylinder first, and these filters tend to get dirtier. For Dyson models, the cyclone cylinder filter is scraped clean automatically when you empty the dust canister, so you only need to clean the exhaust filter. This is even easier to clean than a product that only requires you to open the lid and empty it.
We’ve established that Dyson produces excellent vacuum cleaners, but which Dyson is the best choice? Let’s look at the two most popular models, compare them, and discuss who they’re best for.
The V8 Absolute and V15 Detect are the most popular Dyson vacuums available today. Both come with two attachments and boast incredible suction power. The main difference between them is their weight and battery life.
The V8 Absolute only weighs five and a half pounds, which is excellent for people who live in multistory houses, as it makes going up and down stairs much more manageable.
The benefit of the V15 Detect is its battery, which can last up to an hour. In addition, it has a display on the handle that shows how much time you have left, so you don’t need to worry about it dying suddenly. This model is best for people with houses over 2,400 square feet who want to clean it in one go.
We recommend going with a Dyson, but some people might not be willing or able to spend that much on a vacuum. For this reason, we will show you what to focus on to choose an excellent cordless vacuum within a lower price range.
You want the best suction power possible. However, our tests showed that no other cordless vacuums could measure up to a Dyson in this regard, so consider this when deciding what other brands to consider. Most important is that a vacuum can pick up small debris effectively.
With several of the products we tested, we saw debris fall from the brush when we lifted it. In this case, you’ll have to vacuum it up repeatedly. If the brush pushes around large debris, you can remove the attachment and vacuum it up that way. We included a before and after pictures for each product, so please take a look at them.
You can’t always go in a straight line when you’re vacuuming. Sometimes you need to turn your vacuum to go around furniture and walls. If you can swivel the nozzle with a flick of the wrist, you can clean along the path you want. It’s easy to dismiss minor usability factors like this, but when it comes to appliances you use regularly, it’s essential to check for these.
Among lower-priced vacuum cleaners, the Black+Decker vacuum stood out for its ability to suck up debris and turn with ease. Despite costing only about half the price of a Dyson, it tackled even small debris. It also sports anti-tangle fins to prevent hair and pet fur from getting caught. However, while it’s easy to turn, it’s relatively heavy and makes a lot of noise when you move it.
This vacuum's dust canister is attached to the handle, which allows you to use it in narrow spaces, such as under the sofa.
If you want to clean while your kids are sleeping or if you live in an apartment building, you might want a quieter vacuum cleaner. We measured the noise level of every product and found the Tineco to be the quietest.
Just how quiet should a vacuum cleaner be? A typical conversation is about 60 to 70 decibels, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
Based on our testing, we found that vacuums that produced less than 60 decibels of noise didn’t disrupt a conversation. When it gets above 60 decibels, you need to raise your voice to be heard. At 70 decibels, your voice is completely drowned out. If you don’t want to disturb those around you, look for a vacuum quieter than 60 decibels.
We found that most cordless vacuum cleaners are pretty loud. The sounds of the Motorbar Cleaner Head on the Dyson V15 and the Black+Decker’s motor are particularly noisy. Some other products were quiet on low, but only the Tineco stayed below 65 decibels on high.
The Tineco also has excellent suction power and easily cleans up small debris. It has an automatic mode that changes suction strength based on the type of flooring. However, you can’t turn the nozzle easily, and it tends to get tangled up with hair.

The V15 Detect was released in 2021 and is Dyson’s best vacuum. It has a piezoelectric sensor that measures dust based on vibrations and a green laser that helps detect debris. This vacuum boasts overwhelming suction power that can clean any surface. The Fluffy Cleaner Head picks up small debris, large debris, and hair on hardwood and tile flooring, while the Motorbar Cleaner Head draws out sand from the carpet.
When you empty the dust canister, debris stuck to the filter gets scraped off automatically, so all you need to do is wash off the pre-motor filter to clean it. When its suction power was on medium, the battery lasted 45 minutes, which is above average. In addition, a display on the handle tells you how much battery life you have left down to the second, so you don’t have to worry about the vacuum shutting off while you’re using it.
It can’t be beaten in terms of power and functionality, but it’s a bit heavier and noisier than we’d like. It glides effortlessly across the floor when vacuuming, but it feels heavy when you lift it. This might not be the best option if you need to carry it up and down stairs regularly. On top of that, the Motorbar Cleaner Head makes a lot of noise when it hits the floor, even in eco mode, which is the weakest. We recommend using the Fluffy Cleaner Head when you use it at night.
This is the best cordless vacuum on the market, with plenty of suction power and a long-lasting battery. It won’t leave you disappointed about switching from a corded unit and is capable of serving as your primary vacuum.

The Dyson V8 Absolute was released in 2016, but it’s still a popular model even today. As its name suggests, it comes with eight attachments, including a Fluffy Cleaner Head. This vacuum has the suction power you expect from a Dyson. It misses slightly more debris than the V15, but you can use the two brush heads to tackle any floor type. You shouldn’t run into any situations this vacuum can’t handle.
This vacuum has two areas that you'll need to clean, both of which can be washed. It has one more part to wash compared to the V15, but debris is removed automatically when you open the cyclone cylinder in this model, just like the V15. It doesn’t take much longer to clean than the V15. You can change the suction power between high and low. On low with the brush head attached, it lasted 36 minutes. On the other hand, it only lasted eight minutes and 31 seconds on high. It has powerful suction regardless, so keeping it on low is a good idea.
Unlike the V15, it doesn’t display how much battery you have left. However, it’s lighter than the V15, so it’s great for people who frequently need to lift it or carry it up and down stairs. On top of that, it’s quieter as well. The Motobar Cleaner Head does make some knocking noises, but using the Fluffy Cleaner Head on low mode keeps the noise down to 63.1 decibels. While it lacks some features, it’s quiet and user-friendly, making it a well-balanced product. This vacuum is excellent for people looking for easy cleaning.

Tineco makes smart appliances, mostly vacuum cleaners and floor scrubbers. Their Pure One S11 vacuum cleaner can connect with an app, has an automatic mode, and is lightweight. It can’t match the suction power of a Dyson, but it takes care of even small debris on hard floors. However, it couldn’t remove the debris from deep crevices in low or high pile carpet, and hair gets tangled up in the brush head. This vacuum is best for people without pets and who have mostly wood or tile floors.
The main draw of this vacuum is how quiet it is, as it dominates the competition in this regard. It was the only product we tested that stayed below 65 decibels, even on high. This makes it an excellent choice for people who clean at night or don’t want to disturb their neighbors or family. Its battery lasts 28 minutes in auto mode. This is usually long enough, but it depends on how dirty your floor is. The vacuum only displays remaining battery life with three bars, but you can check the exact percentage by connecting it to the app.
It’s relatively light, making it easy to handle. However, it’s hard to turn it the way you want due to the curve of the juncture between the unit and the brush head. It wasn’t good at making tight turns around furniture or under the sofa. This is the product for you if you’re looking for a quiet vacuum for mostly hardwood or composite flooring or tile.

Shark produces the Wandvac vacuum, and its self-emptying system automatically dumps debris into the wastebasket attached to the charging dock, so you don’t need to empty it by hand. It seemed to clean up large and small debris at a glance, but many grains of sand fell from the brush head when we lifted it. We had to go over small debris repeatedly to clean it up, so it didn’t do the best on hard surfaces.
On the other hand, it demonstrated Dyson-level suction power on low-pile carpet. Hair didn’t get tangled in the head, so this is an excellent vacuum for people with pets and a lot of carpet. However, it only has one mode and it only lasted 11 minutes and 45 minutes with the head attached. This isn’t long enough to clean your entire home at once.
It’s easy to use, as it doesn’t weigh much and turns easily. Its small dust canister makes it easy to use under sofas and in other tight spaces. However, the weak battery is concerning. This tool might be best in a supporting role, such as cleaning up debris left over on the carpet by a robot vacuum.

Miele is a legacy household appliance brand from Germany. The Triflex HX1 features an adjustable connection between the pipe and the motor, which allows you to use it as a stick, upright, or as a handheld vacuum. It has good suction power on hardwood, tile, and low-pile carpet, picking up all the fine grains of sand. However, hair tends to get tangled up in the brush head, so this isn’t the best choice if you have a pet. In addition, it left some residual debris in high-pile carpet.
It has a low, medium, and high setting. The battery lasted 20 minutes and 15 seconds, a little on the shorter end of the spectrum. This is a good option for people with smaller homes or those who want to clean a few rooms every day. This was the heaviest vacuum we tested, weighing more than eight pounds. This gives it a feeling of stability but makes it hard to lift, so it’s not ideal if your house is two stories or more. Turning it is also challenging, so using this vacuum is not a smooth experience.
While the selling point of this vacuum is its ability to change shapes, we found that it took a long time to switch from one shape to another. It’s better to choose the right vacuum from the start, such as a cordless one if you want to clean under sofas and an upright one if you mainly clean floors or want to stand it up without making space for a charging dock.

Black+Decker's vacuum has a removable lithium-ion battery that can be used interchangeably with other Black+Decker devices. It cleared all debris on wood floors and tile except for large crumbs. In addition, it sucked up hair without letting it get tangled, so this is a good vacuum for pet owners. However, it did not perform well on high pile carpet.
It has three modes: low, medium, and high. The battery lasted 20 minutes and 50 seconds on medium, which doesn't quite measure up to our top products. It's more suited for cleaning one room at a time than cleaning the whole house at once. Weighing in at six pounds 14 ounces, it's on the heavy side for a cordless vacuum. However, it's easy to turn by simply moving your wrist. That being said, the brush head is relatively large, making tight turns difficult.
It doesn't sport an automatic mode or self-cleaning filter, but it has the useful feature of being able to stand up on its own. If you want to take a break while cleaning, you don't need to lean it against a wall or lay it on the floor. This is an excellent vacuum for pet owners and those who don't want to compromise on either cleaning ability for affordability.

The RapidClean Pro is produced by Eureka, which has been in the vacuum business for over 100 years. It claims to pack powerful cleaning in a five-pound, five-ounce frame. Its weight makes it very easy to use. It’s easy to turn, and the dust canister is near the handle, which allows you to clean tight spaces, such as under the sofa. However, it falls short on the most critical point: suction power. While it does pick up large debris, it can’t pick up sand thoroughly, and some of it falls from the head.
On top of that, the brush can’t rotate on high-pile carpet, which prevents it from picking anything up. We feel this isn’t the right choice for carpets. Its battery life is a major plus, though. It has two modes, low and high, and the battery lasts 59 minutes and 18 seconds on low. As we mentioned, it doesn’t have much suction power in that mode.
While it can’t stand on its own, it has a dip in the back that allows it to hang on a shelf or sofa. However, it has no other notable features. Finally, hair gets tangled up in it easily, so it’s not a good fit for pet owners.

We tested each vacuum on the following eight points.
Products we tested
We used the following types of debris in our test:
Next, we tested each product on tile. We scattered 0.75 ounces of debris on the floor and passed each vacuum over it once on regular strength, or its equivalent if there is no such mode.

Finally, we tested each vacuum on high pile carpet, using a Vollerslev rug from IKEA. We scattered 0.75 ounces of debris on the carpet and passed each vacuum over it one time on normal mode, or equivalent if there is no such mode. We checked if the vacuum cleaned the middle of the floor and up against the walls and looked for small debris that had fallen from the brush. The product got a high rating if all the debris was cleared away. We evaluated products with a single brush that can be used on any flooring more highly than those requiring you to change the main brush for another.

We evaluated each product based on the following criteria:
If you use your cordless vacuum for too long, the battery will die, and it’ll stop working. We tested the battery life of each product to ensure you can clean even an ample space on one charge. We confirmed that each vacuum was fully charged, ran it on normal or the equivalent mode, and tracked how long it ran before turning off. The longer it lasted, the better.
We tested each vacuum on the following criteria, weighted differently depending on their importance when using a cordless vacuum, and added up each product's score.
