What Is a French Press?

A French press is a manual coffee maker that uses a plunger and filter to brew a cup of coffee. All you need to do is soak the coffee grounds in hot water and wait for about 4 minutes. Easy, right? We’ll explain more about the unique features of French press coffee makers below.

You Can Brew Richer Coffee More Affordably Than Using a Coffee Maker

You Can Brew Richer Coffee More Affordably Than Using a Coffee Maker

The appeal of a French press is that you can easily brew rich coffee without spending money on a coffee maker. If you're torn between a coffee maker and a French press, take your flavor preferences and budget into account when making a decision.

Using a metal filter and a few extra minutes, a French press extracts the natural oils and flavors of the coffee beans. The device is deceptively simple and also budget-friendly.

Making a delicious cup of joe is as simple as adding ground coffee to the French press and pouring boiling water over it. So with a French press, it’s easy to brew up a delicious cup of coffee at home.

On the other hand, coffee makers have adjustable functions that let you customize your coffee, but they tend to produce lighter, weaker coffee. And, coffee makers typically cost from $100 to $300, an important consideration if you’re watching your spending.

If you’re looking for rich flavor at an affordable price, we recommend a French press coffee maker.

You Can Brew Delicious Coffee Outdoors Too, Since A French Press Doesn’t Require Power

You Can Brew Delicious Coffee Outdoors Too, Since A French Press Doesn’t Require Power

In addition, a major selling point of a french press is that it doesn't require any power supply, so you can brew yourself some rich coffee even when you’re outdoors. As long as you can boil water, you can enjoy freshly brewed coffee anywhere.

During our testing, we found several French press coffee makers that excel at heat retention.

How to Choose French Press Coffee Makers

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best French Press Coffee Makers.

1

First, Check the Capacity. Choose The Size Based on the Number of Cups You Want to Make

First, Check the Capacity. Choose The Size Based on the Number of Cups You Want to Make

The first spec to look at when choosing a French press is the maximum capacity of coffee that you can brew with it. These coffee makers come in sizes with capacities ranging from 18 to 48 ounces. We recommend you select a French press that can make coffee for the number of people who typically drink it in your household.

Among the French presses we tested, most had a capacity of 32 ounces. With that size, we could make coffee for three to four people. Or, if you’re an all-day coffee drinker, you can brew up coffee in the morning and drink throughout the day.

If you live alone and don't need a lot of coffee, we recommend you choose a French press with a maximum capacity of 18 ounces. But if you’re going camping with a group or have a large family of coffee drinkers, we recommend you choose a French press that can make 48 ounces at once.

If You Want to Easily Brew Delicious Coffee, Espro's P3 French Press Is Our Top Choice

If You Want to Easily Brew Delicious Coffee, Espro's P3 French Press Is Our Top Choice

Many French press coffee makers we tested lost points when it came to the flavor of the coffee they made. The only French press coffee maker we tested that allowed us to brew tasty coffee with ease was the P3 French Press by ESPRO.

Though this coffee maker didn’t provide as much thermal insulation as other models on this list, this French press coffee maker’s appeal lies in its ability to make rich coffee with a smooth mouthfeel without any hassle. We'll explain more about this coffee maker’s features below.

Brews Coffee With a Smooth Texture and Rich Flavor!

Brews Coffee With a Smooth Texture and Rich Flavor!

When we conducted a taste test of coffee made by the French presses on this list, only the P3 French Press from ESPRO produced coffee that our testers rated as exceptionally satisfying.

Coffee made with a French press often leaves a powdery residue on the tongue compared to coffee brewed by hand-drip or coffee makers that use a filter. But the coffee produced by the P3 French Press earned high marks from our testers for its "creamy and smooth mouthfeel."

The flavor was well-balanced and easy to drink, and even the baristas who tasted it said, "You can really taste the natural sweetness and body of the coffee beans." On the other hand, our testers said the lower-ranked models produced coffee with "bitterness too strong to keep drinking" and "rough and powdery residue remains in the mouthfeel.

Even among the same type of French press, the flavor can vary greatly depending on the product. So if you're looking for an option that can reliably make delicious coffee, consider ESPRO's P3 French Press.

Because There Are Fewer Parts to Wash, Maintenance Doesn’t Take Much Effort

Because There Are Fewer Parts to Wash, Maintenance Doesn’t Take Much Effort

Another great feature of the P3 French Press by ESPRO is the minimal effort it requires for maintenance. Only a few parts of the machine need to be removed to give the French press a thorough cleaning.

With only five detachable parts, the P3 French Press by ESPRO is easy to keep in top form. To maintain it, you just need to remove those parts and put them into the dishwasher.

On the other hand, another French press on this list has seven parts you need to clean. It takes more time to maintain this model, as it requires you to disassemble and reassemble it after each use, though the parts are dishwasher-safe. So ESPRO's P3 French Press gets major points for having fewer parts and requiring less maintenance to keep it clean.

Headed on an Outdoor Trip? Consider Espro's P7 French Press and OXO's Venture French Press Coffee Maker

Heading on a camping trip? You can still enjoy the delicious coffee you make at home If you take ESPRO's P7 French Press or OXO's Venture French Press Coffee Maker. Based on our testing, we’ll highlight the benefits of each option below.

Even 30 Minutes After Brewing, We Were Able to Enjoy Piping Hot Coffee

Even 30 Minutes After Brewing, We Were Able to Enjoy Piping Hot Coffee

While some people stop at one cup of coffee, others prefer to enjoy their favorite hot beverage all day. Some French presses do a better job than others at keeping coffee hot, though. After brewing coffee with boiling water and measuring the temperature 30 minutes later, the results showed that both ESPRO's P7 French Press and OXO's French Press Coffee Maker were able to maintain the warmth of the coffee for extended periods of time.

Generally, coffee should be about 145°F or more to qualify as “hot.” Both Impressively, the ESPRO and the OXO French press coffee makers were able to maintain respective temperatures of 174.74°F and 165.02°F. With either option, you’ll be able to enjoy hot coffee even when it’s cold outside.

These Coffee Makers Stood Out for the Intensity of Their Brew

These Coffee Makers Stood Out for the Intensity of Their Brew

The taste of the brewed coffee turned into a sticking point with our reviewers. Among those who did a taste comparison, many found the bitterness overwhelming. Testers commented, "The texture is smooth, but the intensity of the bitterness is concerning," and "The flavor is rich and full-bodied, but bitterness remains in the aftertaste."

Although the bitterness isn’t so bad that the coffee is undrinkable, if you're someone who is interested in French press to enhance the flavor of coffee, we recommend considering ESPRO's P3 French Press, which ranked first on our list.

The Insulation Power Doesn’t Differ Much Between the Two, So Choose According to What You Need

The Insulation Power Doesn’t Differ Much Between the Two, So Choose According to What You Need

ESPRO's P7 French Press and OXO’s Venture French Press Coffee Maker perform about equally well when it comes to retaining heat, so that shouldn’t be your deciding factor in picking one over the other.

If flavor is your top priority, we recommend ESPRO's P7 French Press. Of the two French press coffee makers, compared to OXO, ESPRO did not leave a powdery taste and had a nicer feel in the mouth.

We recommend OXO's Venture French Press Coffee Maker for people looking for cost-effectiveness. ESPRO is approximately $149.95, while the OXO only costs $25.95, which should delight people who are budget-conscious.

Both are excellent coffee makers that maintain the heat of the coffee well, so we recommend you pick the one that meets your top priority: flavor or price.

What we loved

  • Makes smooth and delicious coffee
  • Designed with durable glass
  • Removable parts are dishwasher-safe

What we didn't love

  • Nothing in particular.

The "P3 French Press" by ESPRO can brew up to 32 ounces of coffee. Its main selling point is the use of thick, sturdy glass that can stand up to high heat.

During our taste test, this French press received high praise because of its smooth texture and well-balanced flavor. Feedback from the testers included comments like "Even though it's rich, it's not heavy, making it easy to drink even black." The baristas who tasted the coffee brewed by this coffee maker said, "You can really feel the inherent sweetness and body of the coffee beans."

When we tested for heat retention, this coffee maker registered 146.84°F one hour after we added boiling water. Over time, it dropped 65.16°F, maintaining a relatively warm state. Even if you brew a large amount of coffee at once, it should stay hot for about an hour.

Then when it came to maintenance, this French press coffee maker earned high marks because it only has five parts that can easily be disassembled. And since the parts are dishwasher-safe, keeping this coffee maker clean and in good working order is relatively simple.

Makes Coffee With a Relatively Light Taste and It Stays Warm for Hours

What we loved

  • Available in two sizes
  • Makes a light and well-balanced brew
  • Removable parts are dishwasher-safe

What we didn't love

  • Nothing in particular.

ESPRO's "P7 French Press" is a product that comes in two variations, 18 ounces and 32 ounces. The main body is made of durable stainless steel, and its manufacturer claims that the coffee it makes results in less powdery and smooth mouthfeel due to its double micro mesh filter.

In our taste evaluation, this coffee maker earned points for its minimally powdery texture and well-balanced taste. Feedback from the tester included comments such as "The bitterness isn't overwhelming, and it's enjoyable even when served black." Baristas noted that "while the body is slightly weak, the sweetness and bitterness can be tasted distinctly.

In terms of heat retention, this coffee maker registered 174.74°F one hour after we added boiling water. Even as time passed, it only dropped by 37.26°F, maintaining its warm state and earning high praise. Even if you brew a larger amount at once, you can enjoy delicious coffee for a long time.

When it came to maintenance, we appreciated that this coffee maker only has five parts and that it’s easy to take apart. What’s more, the parts are dishwasher-safe, which makes keeping this machine clean and ready to go a cinch.

In the taste test, our testers tasted some sourness, which resulted in low marks. One tester said that, "The taste is dry, and the sourness stays in the mouth." And the barista expressed some concern about the gritty, powdery texture.

In the insulation test, this French press registered at 158°F one hour after we added boiling water. Despite the passing time, the temperature only dropped by 54°F, keeping its warmth and earning high marks. And you can still enjoy delicious coffee for hours, even if you brew a large amount at once.

In terms of ease of maintenance, testers gave this French press high marks for having a smaller number of parts, only five, which could be disassembled. And since they’re dishwasher-safe, this french press shouldn’t require much effort to keep clean and in good working condition.

The Coffee Has a Somewhat Weak Finish. The Lack of Heat Retention Is Also a Drawback

What we loved

  • Designed with heat-resistant materials
  • Includes stainless steel filter
  • Makes coffee with a smooth, balanced texture

What we didn't love

  • Doesn’t retain heat as well
  • Not suitable for making large amounts of coffee

BODUM's "BRAZIL" is made of a glass material that is resistant to staining and has excellent heat resistance. With a three-layer stainless steel filter, this machine’s manufacturer boasts that this French press can extract the rich flavor and aroma of coffee beans.

During our taste test, the balanced flavor made a good impression. One tester commented that "the taste is a bit mild, but it's well-balanced and easy to drink." The barista commented that "it feels watery but has a smooth texture."

In the insulation test, a temperature of 138.92°F was recorded one hour after we added boiling water. As time passed, the temperature dropped by 73.08°F, so this coffee maker got lower marks for heat retention. And this coffee maker probably isn't suitable for brewing a large amount of coffee at once.

In terms of maintenance, you can disassemble six parts for cleaning. That might seem like a lot, but they’re all dishwasher-safe, which should make keeping this coffee maker clean relatively easy.

The Taste Has a Burnt Bitterness, Making It Difficult to Enjoyably Drink

What we loved

  • Can use both at home and outdoors
  • Retained heat well

What we didn't love

  • Coffee tasted burnt
  • More parts to clean than other french presses

Varia's "PRO Brewer" is recommended for use not only at home but also outdoors, compatible with direct fire and IH. It features double-insulated construction, and the manufacturer claims it has excellent heat retention.

In the taste test, the burnt flavor and watery texture were a letdown, resulting in poor evaluations. Feedback from the testers included comments such as "the prominent sharp and burnt bitterness made it hard to keep drinking." As for the taste, baristas mentioned, "it has a weak body, leaving an unsatisfying impression."

In the insulation test, it registered 153.68°F one hour after boiling water was added. Even as time passed, the temperature only dropped by 58.32°F, earning high praise for its ability to maintain heat. Even if you brew a large amount at once, you'll be able to enjoy your coffee slowly.

In terms of maintenance, this french press has seven parts to disassemble for cleaning. But since they’re dishwasher-safe, it shouldn’t take long to keep this machine clean.
