We measured user satisfaction with an air circulator based on how well it was able to circulate air and quickly equalize the temperature throughout a large living room. We tested each product in the following way. Wind speeds were measured from 36 different locations at a distance of 20 feet from the circulator. The value of the location with the strongest wind speed and the average wind speed of the 36 locations were calculated at a ratio of 7:3. The maximum wind speed was measured as 14 feet per second, and the average wind speed was measured as 5.5 feet per second as the upper limit, with the stronger winds over a wider area being rated as preferable.Test Specifications:Testing equipment: Satotec digital anemometer YK-2005AHDistance: 20 feetRange: 3 feet by 3 feetInterval: every 6 inchesWind speed measured at maximum speed mode
A very satisfactory air circulator was defined as making a degree of noise but being quiet enough not to interrupt sleep. We tested each fan in the following way. A sound level meter was placed five feet away from the air circulator in operation. The noise level was then rated on a 5:5 ratio between maximum air speed mode and minimum airspeed mode. The upper limit for noise was set at 40 decibels in maximum air speed mode and 30 decibels in minimum airspeed mode.Test Specifications:Testing equipment: Miniature digital sound level meterDistance: 5 feetOperating noise measured at maximum and minimum wind speed modes

Many consumers may be wondering what the differences are between regular fans and fans that are categorized as air circulators. Using central air conditioning alone can cause uneven temperatures in different parts of the room. Cold air, for example, may accumulate in lower parts of the room, lowering overall efficiency if you want a uniform temperature. In situations like this, an air circulator is exactly what you need.
By circulating the air in a room, you can equalize the temperature, keeping it at a comfortable level no matter where you are in a room. We recommend using an air circulator for this very purpose, to improve the efficiency of air conditioning.
Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Air Circulators.
Fast air circulation requires a stronger breeze over a wider area. We tested each of the products to measure differences in performance. We tested each of the air circulators by measuring wind speed from points around 20 feet away from the fan. Wind speed meters were placed to gauge wind speeds at 36 different locations separated by six inches each in a three-foot square area.
During testing, we determined that the depth of the fan blades and central hub, together known as the impeller, significantly affects how well each fan circulates air.
Circulators with impellers that were four inches or deeper were able to produce more powerful air even at 20 feet away. Models with thinner impellers produced weaker wind speeds. Deeper impellers provide greater air resistance when the blades are spinning, meaning that more air is circulated during rotation.
If you're looking for an air circulator that circulates air quickly, we recommend models that have impellers with a depth of four inches or more. Either way, when making your purchase, take the depth of the blades and hub into consideration, as deeper impellers will result in more powerful air circulation.
When you're buying an air circulator, the amount of noise it makes is also an important factor to take into consideration. Especially if you plan on using your fan while you sleep, you'll want to choose an air circulator with a quieter DC motor. In testing, we found that models with DC motors have not only a stronger maximum air speed, but also quieter operation in general.
Air circulators with DC motors operated at volumes around 10 decibels quieter than models with AC motors. An air circulator with a DC motor should be able to provide the power you need without disturbing your sleep. Air circulators like this will be ideal for use in bedrooms, living rooms, and other places where it is better to maintain a quiet environment.
Three of the air circulators we tested were both powerful and on the quieter side: Dreo's Air Circulator Fan, Dreo's Portable Pedestal Fan, and Vornado's Large Air Circulator, compatible with Alexa.
All three of these fans were able to generate wind as strong as seven feet per second or more from 20 feet away, and were quieter than the 40-decibel level needed for undisturbed sleep. These air circulators all provide quick circulation and unobtrusive operation. If you're looking for a quiet air circulator that still performs powerfully, these are models you should check out.
You can adjust the angle of oscillation to best suit the location and point in the direction you want. This gives you a wider range of options in terms of installation locations.
An important factor in choosing an air circulator is whether it has any remote control functions. Without a remote control, you'll have to get up every time you want to turn on or adjust your air circulator. With a remote control, you can operate it from your couch.
Models linked to Alexa can be operated by voice. You can turn the product on or make small adjustments such as increasing the airflow, allowing you control from wherever you are in a room. An air circulator with remote control functions provides a relaxing way for you to adjust air volume and other factors without moving a single step from your bed or wherever you're sitting.
We've introduced several models thus far, but some consumers may be wondering what the differences are between two major manufacturers of air circulators, Dreo and Vornado. We'll explain some differences below, so please refer to this information when making your choice.
Dreo's air circulators come in a wide range of models that can be linked to Alexa or to your phone. This is a big advantage when it comes to performance. Many of Dreo's models come with deep impellers and DC motors, making them both stronger and quieter.
Additionally, many models feature vertical and horizontal oscillation. This not only improves the efficiency of air circulation, but allows for more options when you're choosing a location for your fan. Horizontal oscillation, for example, can come in handy if you're using one fan in a room to cool multiple people. If a high level of performance is important to you with your air circulator, Dreo should be your first choice.
Vornado is a well-established manufacturer who has been in operation since the 1940s, and is famous for their progressive designs that incorporate airplane technology. Vornado's innovative approach is still going strong, and its air circulators are still known for their exceptional airflow. Vornado's current lineup features a wide variety of shapes and designs, as well as classic and modern styles. You're sure to find an air circulator that fits the look of your room.

Dreo's Portable Pedestal Fan can be connected to both Alexa and your phone. You can use your phone as a remote control or make adjustments by voice. Testing the speed of air circulation, the six-inch-deep impeller was able to produce wind that reached farther and faster than other models, with a maximum speed of 8.06 feet per second measured from a distance of 20 feet. Wind strength at this level can quickly circulate air in a living room as large as 40 feet around.
The noise level of this air circulator was recorded as 35.1 decibels on the weakest setting and 48 decibels on the strongest mode. Both of these measurements show relatively quiet operation, and especially in the weakest mode, it's quiet enough to not cause problems when sleeping.
This fan can be confidently recommended in terms of functionality. There are a total of nine different options controlling airflow, comprised of eight air volume levels and a turbo mode, allowing for fine adjustment depending on the situation. Oscillation was measured at up to 105 degrees vertically and 120 degrees horizontally, with a 3D oscillation option that automatically controls swiveling in all directions.
It has four different options for control, including via phone, Alexa, remote control, and on the main unit itself. Connectivity to Alexa enables intuitive voice control. This product should be your first choice if you are looking for an air circulator. It is both powerful and quiet, and can be conveniently operated by voice control.

Like their Portable Pedestal Fan, Dreo's Air Circulator Fan features smartphone and Alexa integration. It has a compact size that allows for use as a tabletop fan as well. In air circulation speed tests, the over six-inch-thick impeller generates wind that circulates far, with a maximum speed of 9.01 feet per second when measured from a distance of 20 feet, one of the fastest air circulators we tested. This allows for near-instantaneous circulation in any large room.
In terms of noise, we measured a sound level of 33.6 decibels when the fan was set at the weakest mode and 54.9 decibels in turbo mode. Both of these levels are relatively quiet thanks to the fan's DC motor, and the weaker mode in particular was rated as quiet enough not to disturb sleep. This air circulator can be controlled using your phone or by voice using Alexa, meaning you can operate it from wherever you are in the room.
The fan can be adjusted 90 degrees upward, allowing you to direct the wind to any location, depending on where you place it. It features six different modes and nine speed settings, providing optimal adjustment for any situation. This air circulator should be your first choice if you're looking for something compact for use on a desk or tabletop.

Vornado's Large Air Circulator is compatible with Alexa, allowing for voice control and activation. Vornado products feature a five-year warranty, making them stand out above the typical one-year offer. We tested the air circulation speed at an exceptional 7.25 feet per second from 20 feet away. This makes this model suitable for use in bedrooms or larger spaces such as living rooms.
Despite its powerful airflow, this air circulator also had strong ratings in terms of quietness. It was measured at 35.1 decibels at its weakest setting and 52.2 decibels at its strongest setting, making it quiet enough for sound sleep when used in the bedroom. The Vornado Large Air Circulator also features high functionality. The fan can oscillate 90 degrees up and down, and can be turned on using very simple commands to Alexa. It can also be controlled from your phone using the Alexa app. Note that the air circulator itself does not come with a remote control.

Vornado's Large Pedestal Air Circulator is an air circulator that can be adjusted in height from 33 inches to 40 inches. It is advertised as being able to circulate air through an entire room using special airflow called vortex action, and it comes with a five-year warranty, meaning that if it breaks down, you'll be able to get it fixed. The powerful airflow associated with the Vornado brand is no exception here. This model was measured as having a top-class maximum wind speed at 8.0 feet per second from 20 feet, an exceptional result for air circulation.
From a distance of five feet, this model was recorded at 52.2 decibels in its weakest mode and as having a sound level of 62.5 at its highest setting. This is relatively loud among the products we tested, making it less suitable for use in the living room or bedroom.
The fan can be adjusted up to 90 degrees vertically, but does not come with any kind of remote control, giving it a lower score overall for its functionality. To turn it on or adjust air volume, the user must go to the device and make any changes manually. But unless you want a tall circulator that provides a strong breeze, there is little to make this stand out in comparison with smaller models.

Lasko's 20" Pivoting Wind Machine Air Circulator Floor Fan can be used as both a fan and a circulator. The fan head can be freely adjusted 350 degrees, allowing it to be aimed at any angle. The power of this air circulator stands out. We measured it at 7.28 feet per second from 20 feet, in line with the performance of high-end circulators. When used as just a fan, it offers a wide spread of wind in all directions, horizontally and vertically.
The power of the circulator resulted in more pronounced noise measurements, with 53.2 decibels at its lowest setting and 64.7 decibels at its highest setting, which is loud enough to drown out the sound of a TV. This air circulator includes no remote control or connectivity options, forcing the user to manually turn on and adjust the device when needed. This all results in a lower score for functionality.

The Whole Room Air Circulator Fan from Honeywell is a small air circulator measuring 15 inches high, 14 inches wide, and eight inches deep. The unit itself weighs about four pounds total. We measured wind speed at a distance from 20 feet, and were able to measure a maximum of 5.3 feet per second with the fan at its most powerful mode. There were no signs of fluctuation in the speed testing.
The air circulator was rated as relatively quiet, at 51.4 decibels in its most powerful mode. At its lowest setting, it was recorded at 43.2. All in all, this makes the model a little too noisy for comfortable sleep. The angle of the head can be adjusted 90 degrees vertically, but the lack of connectivity or even a remote control gave this model low scores for functionality. Unless you're specifically looking for a small air circulator, there is little reason to recommend this model.

Vornado's Silver Swan Alchemy is a durable and attractively designed air circulator with an all-metal body and fan blades. For a Vornado air circulator, the wind strength was a little weaker than expected, with a maximum speed of 4.48 feet per second from 20 feet away. Overall circulation was not as fast as it could have been.
From five feet, the fan made a sound of 50.9 decibels at its lowest setting and 60.7 decibels at its highest setting. This model in particular makes a metallic sound with its fan blades, so it's not the best choice for use in a living room or bedroom. The fan can only be swiveled 20 degrees in a vertical direction, and adjustment requires the tightening of a dial. This model also lacks any kind of remote control, requiring manual operation and adjustment by the user, leading to low scores for functionality. We feel this fan is impractical due to its weak airflow and noisy metal blades. If you consider this model at all, it would be for its design.

The 20" Box Fan from Pelonis is a box fan that can be placed near a window for ventilation. A recessed storage space keeps the cord out of the way when moving or storing it. Wind speed was measured at 4.85 feet per second from a distance of 20 feet. This makes it relatively slow and not quite suitable for full circulation in a room.
The noise from this fan was measured at 59.4 decibels at its lowest speed setting, and 64.3 decibels at its highest setting, making it loud enough to fully prevent conversation at a normal volume. This gives the Pelonis Box Fan a low score for noise. The fan received a low score for functionality due to its lack of adjustable oscillation in any direction. It also has no remote control or timer function.
