There Are Two Main Ways to Use a Fan

Decide What Kind of Breeze You Want: Circulating Air or Helping You Feel Cool

Decide What Kind of Breeze You Want: Circulating Air or Helping You Feel Cool

Fans can be broadly categorized into two types based on their use: circulating air in a room or providing a direct breeze to the body. Firstly, if you're looking to improve the efficiency of your heating or cooling system by circulating air, go for a fan that produces a straight, focused stream of air. This type of fan can be placed in a corner of your living room and still effectively circulate air, making you feel cooler.

On the other hand, if you want to feel the breeze directly, opt for a fan that produces a softer, more diffused airflow. This type of fan can distribute air across your entire body, making even the hottest days more bearable.

Choosing the right fan based on your specific needs is crucial, so make sure to consider what you're after before you start shopping. We've included smoke test images in the ranking section to visually show the spread of the airflow. Make sure to check that out as well.

Fans that produce a highly directional airflow can make you feel sluggish or even sick if you keep them aimed directly at you for too long. We recommend using such fans primarily for air circulation purposes.

How to Choose a Fan - Buying Guide

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Fans.

1

The Best Balance of Air Movement and Quietness Will Cost You $70 or More

The Best Balance of Air Movement and Quietness Will Cost You $70 or More

When it comes to picking a fan, the most crucial factor is finding the right balance between wind and operating noise. Even if one aspect is great, a fan that falls short in the other won't be satisfying. This is especially true for those who want to use fans in any room, like the bedroom or living room. Our tests showed that fans priced at $70 and above met satisfactory standards for both air movement and operating noise.

High-priced fans tend to have stronger airflow and a wider range, effectively lowering your perceived temperature. Plus, if the operating noise is below 40 decibels, it's unlikely to disturb your sleep. If you're looking for a fan that balances air flow and quietness, you're less likely to go wrong with models priced at $70 or more. Be cautious with cheaper options, as they often lack either wind speed or quietness.

We Measured Actual Wind Speeds

We Measured Actual Wind Speeds

For fans, how cool they make you feel is directly related to wind strength. That’s why testing is essential for understanding the performance differences between products. We measured the wind speed at a distance of five feet from each fan. We divided a three-foot square area into 36 sections, spaced six inches apart, and measured the wind speed at each point.

The results showed that the wind was stronger at the center and gradually weakened towards the edges. The strongest fan registered a wind speed of 18.5 feet per second, while the weakest was at 9.9 feet per second. The difference between them is nearly double. This data shows that there's a noticeable difference in the breeze you'll feel depending on the fan you choose. So, make sure to check the wind speed when selecting a fan.

Deeper Impellers Mean More Air Movement

Deeper Impellers Mean More Air Movement

Our tests revealed that fans with deeper, wider blades and hubs, which together are called the impeller, could generate faster wind speeds and make you feel cooler. This is because deeper impellers can move air more powerfully. Fans like this are generally priced above $70.

On the other hand, cheaper fans under $70 often have thin, narrow impellers, and can't produce a satisfyingly refreshing breeze. If you have some wiggle room in your budget, we recommend opting for a slightly more expensive model.

For a Quieter Experience, Choose a Tower Fan or DC Motor

For a Quieter Experience, Choose a Tower Fan or DC Motor

Fans priced above $70 not only offer strong wind but also excel in quietness and energy efficiency. This is often because high-end fans are equipped with features like centrifugal blades in tower fans or a DC motor. When we measured the operating noise, these fans were pretty quiet even at a distance of five feet. DC motors convert AC power to DC and operate more quietly compared to AC motors.

Tower fans, unlike regular fans, use thin centrifugal blades to achieve low noise levels. In addition to quietness, tower fans and DC motors offer other benefits like fine-tuned airflow adjustments and energy efficiency that's about one-tenth that of AC motors. When using a fan in your bedroom or living room, prioritize quietness and energy efficiency by choosing a tower fan or DC motor.

We Found the Dreo Portable Pedestal Fan Excels in Air Circulation Speed

We Found the Dreo Portable Pedestal Fan Excels in Air Circulation Speed

Among fans that balance air movement and quietness, we particularly recommend the Dreo Portable Pedestal Fan. What also sets this product apart is its excellent air circulation speed. In our tests, even at a distance of 20 feet from the fan, it recorded a wind speed of 8.07 feet per second. It demonstrated the power to quickly circulate air in a large living room. You can use it in your bedroom or living room to keep the entire space comfortable.

2

Look for These Essential Features, Especially Oscillation and Remote Control

Look for These Essential Features, Especially Oscillation and Remote Control

When choosing a fan, in addition to wind strength and quietness, there are four features you'll want to consider: adjustable airflow, oscillation, and the presence of a remote control and timer. If a fan has all four of these, you'll be able to use it comfortably in any situation.

Adjustable Airflow Allows Custom Comfort

Adjustable Airflow Allows Custom Comfort

The ability to adjust the fan's airflow is crucial for achieving the perfect results. Standard three-speed settings can sometimes be too strong or too weak. To get the airflow just right for your comfort level, opt for a fan with multiple speed settings. For example, you might want a softer breeze when you're sleeping, but if the wind is too weak, you won't feel cool enough. Fans with five to seven speed settings allow you to fine-tune the airflow to your liking.

Oscillation Can Help Multiple People Feel Cool

Oscillation Can Help Multiple People Feel Cool

Fans with an oscillation feature are ideal when you want the air to hit more than just yourself. If a fan has automatic left and right oscillation, everyone can enjoy a comfortable breeze. With automatic left and right oscillation, the fan can distribute air evenly over a wide area. Without the oscillation feature, the air would only hit one person, leaving others to suffer the heat.

Smart Home Integration Lets You Have Voice-Activated Control

Smart Home Integration Lets You Have Voice-Activated Control

The ability to control your fan remotely is a crucial factor for convenience. Especially for those who want to control their fan without leaving the comfort of their sofa or bed, remote control features are indispensable. If you have a fan that can sync with smart speakers equipped with Alexa or Google Assistant, you can easily control your fan using voice commands. For instance, just say, "Turn on the fan," and the fan will power up. This way, you can enjoy a comfortable breeze without lifting a finger.

Fans with an included remote control offer similar convenience. Just keep the remote close at hand, and you can easily adjust the fan's settings from a distance. Even if you're lying down, you can simply grab the remote to adjust the airflow and direction. On the other hand, fans without these features require you to get up and walk over to the unit, which can be a hassle. So, if you're in the market for a new fan, look for one with voice control or remote control features.

Detailed Timer Settings Give You Uninterrupted Sleep

Detailed Timer Settings Give You Uninterrupted Sleep

When using a fan during sleep, the ability to set a detailed timer is key. Running a fan for an extended period can make you feel sluggish when you wake up due to the drop in body temperature. To avoid this, it's recommended to set a timer so that the fan turns off one to two hours before you wake up.

However, everyone's wake-up time varies. The ideal setting is one that neither disrupts your sleep nor affects your health in the morning. Therefore, it's important to choose a fan with a timer that can be set for six hours or more and can be adjusted in one-hour increments. Being able to fine-tune the timer settings will help you tailor the fan's operation to your wake-up time and physical condition, ultimately improving the quality of your sleep.

3

Choose Fans With No More Than 3 Parts for Easy Assembly

Assembling a Fan Can Be Surprisingly Tedious

Assembling a Fan Can Be Surprisingly Tedious

It's frustrating when you buy a fan to beat the summer heat, only to spend more time than expected putting it together. In our tests, some fans took over 30 minutes to assemble while following the instructions. However, fans with fewer parts and no need for a screwdriver were quick and easy to set up, even without looking at the manual. Opt for a simple design with minimal parts and no need for tools, and you'll be enjoying a refreshing breeze in no time.

4

Check the Weight and Handle for Easy Portability

Fans Under 6 Pounds With a Handle Are Easy to Carry With One Hand

Fans Under 6 Pounds With a Handle Are Easy to Carry With One Hand

Fans are often moved around the house, from the sofa to the kitchen and so on. When that's the case, a heavy fan can be a hassle to carry. Fans that weigh less than six pounds and have a handle are easy to carry with just one hand. This makes it easy to move the fan from the living room to the kitchen after watching TV, or to the bedroom before going to sleep. You can enjoy a comfortable breeze anywhere in the house without the stress of moving a heavy fan.

5

Prioritize Safety If You Have Small Children

Going Bladeless Eliminates the Risk of Little Fingers Getting Caught in the Fan

Going Bladeless Eliminates the Risk of Little Fingers Getting Caught in the Fan

If you have small children, you're probably concerned about them sticking their fingers into the fan. With a bladeless fan, there's no risk of your child accidentally injuring themselves. Bladeless fans, like those from Dyson, often feature a slim, vertical design. They're not only safer, but also easier to clean and maintain. Traditional fans with blades tend to collect dust in the gaps, but bladeless fans can be easily wiped clean.

mybest's Top Choice! The Ultimate High-Performance Machine With Smartphone Control and Great Air Circulation

Dreo's Portable Pedestal Fan offers voice control through smartphone integration and Alexa compatibility. With six wind modes and eight speed settings, it promises to handle everything from helping you feel cool at close range to circulating air in a large living room. When it comes to making a breeze, this fan doesn't disappoint. It recorded a maximum wind speed of 16.5 feet per second at a distance of five feet, earning high marks. Its strong blades also generate wind that reaches far, clocking in at a maximum speed of 8.07 feet per second at 20 feet. This means it can efficiently circulate air even in a room as large as 40 feet across.

It also scored high for its quiet operation. Both its lowest and turbo modes are impressively quiet. The lowest setting registers just 33.6 decibels, which is quiet enough not to disturb your sleep. Ease of use and assembly are other strong points. With a total of nine speed settings, including the turbo mode, you can fine-tune the fan to your specific needs. It also features automatic oscillation, moving up to 105 degrees vertically and 120 degrees horizontally. Weighing just over five and a half pounds, it's a breeze to move around.

But perhaps its most attractive feature is its versatility in control options. Not only does it come with a remote, but it also syncs with your smartphone and Alexa for voice-activated commands. This fan is a top contender in every category. If you're in the market for a fan, we think this should be your go-to option. It's not just powerful, but also quiet enough for bedtime use and offers stress-free operation. If you're looking for a convenient fan that checks all the boxes, you should definitely consider picking this one up.

Quiet Even at Maximum Speed, This Is Our Top Choice for a Tower Fan

The Dreo Cruiser Pro T1 Tower Fan stands out for its remote operability. By downloading the Dreo app on your smartphone, you can control the fan whether you're traveling, working, or just lounging in bed. One of the key features of this tower fan is its quiet operation, which it maintains even when delivering strong airflow. With a maximum wind speed of 15.3 feet per second at a distance of five feet, it provides a refreshing breeze even in rooms without air conditioning. The noise level at maximum speed is just 48 decibels, so it won't disturb you while watching TV.

Ease of use and simple assembly also scored high marks. Since it's a tower fan, there are fewer parts to assemble; you just attach it to the base, and it's ready to go. With six levels of airflow adjustment, a timer function, and an oscillation feature, you won't find it lacking in your living room or bedroom. While it may not be suitable for air circulation purposes, if you're looking for a high-performance fan that's powerful at a close distance, quiet, and can be operated from your smartphone, this is definitely a product worth considering.

A Great Balance Wind Power and Quietness, but Not the Best Choice for Air Circulation

The Pelonis 16-inch Pedestal Fan with DC Motor is a standout in their lineup, designed to be both powerful and quiet. With 12 speed settings and a timer that can be set for up to 12 hours, this fan is perfect for those who like to fine-tune their settings based on personal preference. In testing, the fan generated a fairly strong wind speed of 13.6 feet per second at a distance of five feet. Not only is the maximum wind speed impressive, but the fan also distributes air in multiple directions, so it’s more likely to help your entire body feel cool.

But the fan didn't score high on air circulation speed. At 20 feet, the maximum wind speed was 5.37 feet per second, which isn't top-tier. The ease of setup was also a bit lacking. While no tools like screwdrivers are needed, it has 10 parts, making the assembly process somewhat time-consuming. So, it's not the best choice for those who want a quick and easy setup.

However, the fan excels in quietness and ease of use. It registered a mere 31.2 decibels on its weakest setting and only 50.1 decibels on its strongest, showcasing the top-tier quietness you'd expect from a DC motor. It also features all the necessary functions, including up to 85 degrees of horizontal oscillation and a remote control. One standout feature is the timer, which can be set in 30-minute increments up to nine and a half hours, making it ideal for those who want to use it while sleeping.

Silent Night Mode Ensures Uninterrupted Sleep, but It's Not Very Portable

The Turbo Silence Extreme 16 Stand Fan from Groupe SEB's Rowenta comes with a Silent Night Mode, ensuring that your sleep won't be disturbed by noise. True to the manufacturer's claims, it scored high in quietness, recording a noise level of just 30.9 decibels in Silent Night Mode, so it’s quiet enough for bedtime use. It's not just quiet, but it's also powerful, earning high marks for its air movement. In Turbo Boost Mode, it recorded a maximum wind speed of 12.6 feet per second. While it may not reach the top speeds of some competitors, its 16-inch diameter blades disperse a strong wind in all directions, making it easy to feel cool all over.

While it does come with desirable features like a timer, oscillation function, and remote control, it weighs in at 17.5 pounds, making it one of the heaviest products tested. This weight impacts its portability, pulling down its score for ease of use. Although no screwdrivers or other tools are needed for assembly, it does have 10 parts, making the assembly process somewhat time-consuming. Even with the instruction manual, expect to spend about 30 minutes putting it together.

Powerful Wind Up to 20 Feet Away, Plus It’s Compact Enough for a Desktop

Vornado's Large Air Circulator with Alexa is, as the name suggests, a circulator that's compatible with Alexa. Standing at a height of 15 inches, it's compact enough to be used as a desktop fan. The biggest draw of this product is its wind power. At a distance of five feet, it recorded a maximum wind speed of 16.2 feet per second, providing ample air movement even in the heat of summer. True to its claim as a circulator, it also scored high in air circulation speed. It delivers a strong wind of 7.25 feet per second up to 20 feet away, making it ideal for circulating air in a large living room.

Despite its powerful wind, it also scored high in quietness. On its weakest mode, it recorded an operating noise of 35.1 decibels. Even at its strongest, it only reached 52.3 decibels, making it unobtrusive when used in a living room. However, it lost points in ease of use. While it can be operated via smartphone or voice commands through Alexa, it lacks a timer function and doesn't offer side-to-side oscillation, which are downsides. It also only has four wind speed settings, making it somewhat difficult to adjust to your preferred level. Still, if you're looking for a product with a long warranty, this Vornado fan is recommended. Unlike most manufacturers that offer just a one-year warranty, this one comes with a five-year warranty.

Bladeless Fan That's Safe for Kids, With Air Purification Feature

The Dyson Pure Cool is a bladeless fan that offers peace of mind for families with small children. It comes equipped with an air purifying feature that claims to catch 99 percent of allergens like pollen and pet dander, purifying the entire room. True to Dyson's reputation for high-quality products, this fan excels in both quietness and ease of use. On its weakest mode, it recorded an operating noise of just 30.9 decibels, ranking as one of the quietest models we tested. It also features an automatic oscillation of up to 70 degrees and a maximum timer setting of nine hours.

The included remote control is ergonomically designed and has a magnet, allowing for neat storage on the unit itself. Where it fell short was in its wind speed. At a distance of 5 feet, it recorded a maximum wind speed of just 9.9 feet per second, so it’s far from the top-performing models. Its maximum wind speed at 20 feet was also a lackluster 4.18 feet per second, earning it mediocre marks for air circulation. However, if you're looking for a fan that can purify the air while cooling, and you want a bladeless design that's safe for children, this could be a great option.

A Space-Saving Tower Fan That’s Quiet Even at Maximum Speed

Lasko's Wind Curve Oscillating Tower Fan with Nighttime Setting and Remote is perfect for those looking to save space. It features a convenient nighttime mode that automatically lowers the speed and dims the control panel lights

It recorded a maximum wind speed of 10.5 feet per second, which didn't earn it high marks. At 3.9 feet per second, the wind speed at 20 feet was also on the weak side, resulting in a low rating for air circulation as well. For quietness, it performed relatively well, producing 38.8 decibels on the weakest mode. On the strongest mode, it stayed below the 50-decibel mark at 44.7 decibels, so it shouldn’t be too distracting while you're cooking or watching TV.

It scored high in ease of use and ease of setup. Although it only has three wind speed settings, it comes with a timer and oscillation features, all of which can be controlled via a remote. Weighing in at about nine pounds, it's conveniently light enough to carry with one hand. And because it's a tower fan, there are fewer parts to assemble, so you can start using it right away.

Dual Blades Provide Strong Wind, but Assembly Is a Hassle

Amazon Basics' Oscillating Dual Blade Standing Pedestal Fan with Remote is a large fan equipped with an AC motor and two blades of different sizes to generate strong wind. When measured at a distance of five feet, it recorded a maximum wind speed of 11.9 feet per second. The wind spreads in all directions, earning it a decent rating in that regard. However, when measured at a distance of 20 feet, the maximum wind speed was only 3.67 feet per second, resulting in a lackluster rating for air circulation.

The fan only has three wind speed settings, and with a body weight of 12.2 pounds, it's too heavy to carry with one hand, which affected its ease-of-use rating. The fan also requires a screwdriver for assembly and has eight parts, making setup time-consuming. On the plus side, it scored high in quietness. With a minimum wind noise level of 36.6 decibels, it's well-suited for bedroom use.

Budget-Friendly With Standard Features, and Super Light for a Floor Fan

Pelonis's 16" Oscillating Pedestal Fan has four sturdy legs that make it less likely to tip over during use. Another appealing feature is its adjustable height, ranging from 35 to 47 inches. However, it didn't perform well in tests for wind speed and air circulation. It recorded wind speeds of 12.7 feet per second at five feet and 4.0 feet per second at 20 feet, falling short of top-performing products. Some people might find the airflow lacking.

Despite the weak airflow, it does well in terms of quietness. The noise level is 38.7 decibels in the lowest mode and 42.1 decibels in the highest mode, quiet enough not to interfere with TV watching. Weighing just under six pounds, it's one of the lightest fans we tested. However, the lack of a remote control or timer function hurt its ease-of-use rating. It's not highly recommended for use while sleeping. With 12 parts and the need for a screwdriver, assembly isn't easy either.

Not Very Quiet Even on Lowest Setting, and Weak Airflow

Black & Decker's 16-Inch Stand Fan is a standard pedestal fan that comes with a remote control. When we tested the product, we noticed that it had relatively weak airflow compared to other pedestal fans. At a distance of five feet, the maximum wind speed was 10.2 feet per second, which might not cool you down. At 20 feet, it was even weaker, recording a speed of just 3.67 feet per second, making it one of the weakest in our tests. You might think that the weak airflow would mean it's quiet, but that's not the case. Even in the weakest mode, it produced a relatively high 47.3 decibels. If you're using it in the bedroom, be aware that it might disturb your sleep.

In terms of ease of use and ease of setup, it didn't score well either. While it does come with a remote control and timer function, it only has three settings for airflow. Depending on how you're feeling, the airflow might be too strong or too weak. Weighing just over nine pounds and lacking a handle, it's not easy to move around. It also has nine parts, and the assembly isn't straightforward unless you read the instructions carefully.

Moves Air Around With Powerful Wind, but Lacks User-Friendly Features

Lasko's 20" Pivoting Wind Machine Air Circulator Floor Fan features a fan head that can rotate 350 degrees, allowing it to send air in any direction you choose. The fan arrives fully assembled, so you can start using it right out of the box. The main attraction of this product is its powerful wind force, despite its compact size. In addition to helping you feel cool, it's also ideal for circulating air in a large living room. At a distance of five feet, it recorded a maximum wind speed of 14.6 feet per second, and at 20 feet, it was 7.28 feet per second, so it can compete with top-tier products in terms of wind strength.

However, this power comes at the cost of noise. Even on the low setting, it registered a relatively loud 53.2 decibels. On the high setting, it hit 64.7 decibels, louder than the sound of a car engine. While it's convenient that the fan arrives fully assembled and is ready to use, it lacks some features that would make it more user-friendly. For instance, it doesn't have an oscillating function, making it less ideal for cooling more than one person. It also doesn't come with a remote control, so you'll have to get up to turn it on or off or to adjust the airflow, which can be a bit of a hassle. Overall, it didn't score high in terms of ease of use.

Strong Wind Is the Selling Point, but Ease of Use Falls Short

Vornado's Large Pedestal Air Circulator boasts exceptional air-circulating power, claiming to move air up to 100 feet. It utilizes what's called Vortex Action to circulate the air throughout the entire room. True to Vornado's reputation, this product excels in delivering powerful wind. Both its wind speed and air circulation capabilities are top-notch. At a distance of five feet, it recorded a maximum wind speed of 18.5 feet per second, and at 20 feet, it was 8.0 feet per second. Both are top-tier results.

However, it didn't score well in other aspects. The noise level was quite high, registering 52.2 decibels on the lowest setting and 62.5 decibels on the highest setting. You'll likely have to turn up the TV volume to hear the dialogue clearly. The fan also lacks some basic features that would make it more user-friendly. It doesn't have an oscillating function, a timer, or even a remote control, which led to a low score in terms of ease of use. All in all, unless you're solely looking for a fan with strong wind capabilities, there are few reasons to choose this one.

Large Fan With Wide Airflow, but Louder Than a TV

Lasko's Oscillating Pedestal Fan with 3 Quiet Speeds features an 18-inch blade, making it one of the larger pedestal fans. When it comes to air movement, it recorded a maximum wind speed of 12.4 feet per second, which is decent but not extraordinary. For air circulation, it had a maximum wind speed of 5.05 feet per second, falling short compared to top-tier products.

The noise level also earned it low scores in quietness tests. It registered 57.1 decibels in its weakest mode and 60.7 decibels in its strongest mode, meaning it’s louder than a typical TV. Ease of setup and use were also less than ideal. With nine parts, assembly took a noticeable amount of time. The lack of a remote control and timer function also contributed to its lower score in user-friendliness.

Comes With a Remote, but Lacks Sleep-Friendly Features

Lasko's Cyclone Pedestal Fan with Remote Control has an 18-inch diameter and five blades. It features a blue plug designed to cut off the electrical current to the fan if a potentially dangerous electrical fault is detected in the motor or power source. In terms of air movement, it recorded a wind speed of 11.7 feet per second at a distance of five feet, which didn't earn it high marks. At 20 feet, it recorded a wind speed of just 2.26 feet per second, which is not ideal for quickly circulating air in a living room.

Noise levels were also a concern. Both the low and high settings were noisy. The low setting registered 54.4 decibels, which is louder than the high settings of some top-rated products. Unlike the Oscillating Pedestal Fan with 3 Quiet Speeds, this model does come with a remote control. However, the timer function can only be set for up to four hours, which may be too short for overnight use. Additionally, with eight parts to assemble, both ease of use and ease of setup took a hit in the ratings.

Lightweight Fan Good for Ventilation, but Lacking in Features

Pelonis's box fan is 21 inches tall, and can be used for ventilation when placed in a window. Thanks to its lightweight design and convenient handle, it's easy to move around. When we tested for wind speed at a distance of five feet, it recorded a maximum speed of 10.4 feet per second. While the fan does spread the air around, its weak airflow didn't earn it high marks. At a distance of 20 feet, it recorded a similarly weak wind speed of 4.85 feet per second.

The fan also didn't score well in terms of quietness. It registered 59.4 decibels on the low setting and 64.3 decibels on the high setting, making it less than ideal for those who prefer a quieter fan. Additionally, because it's a box fan, it doesn't have the ability to oscillate either vertically or horizontally. The lack of a remote control or timer function also made it less convenient to use.

Wind Speed

Wind Speed
We set the standard for user satisfaction as a product that makes you feel cool even in the height of summer, without needing air conditioning. The fan should deliver a comfortable breeze all over your body. We tested each product using the following methods.

We measured wind speeds at 36 points, five feet away from each fan. Then, we evaluated the fans based on 50 percent of the total wind speed and 50 percent of the highest wind speed recorded. We set an average wind speed of eight feet per second and a maximum wind speed of 14 feet per second as the upper limits. Fans that could deliver strong winds over a wide area received higher scores.

Testing Conditions

  • Testing Equipment: Satotech Thermal Anemometer YK-2005AH
  • Measuring Distance: Five feet
  • Measuring Area: Three feet by three feet
  • Measuring Interval: Every six inches
  • Wind Speed Measured: Maximum speed mode

Air Circulation

Air Circulation
We set the standard for user satisfaction as a product that can quickly and evenly circulate air throughout a large living space. We verified each product using the following methods. We measured wind speeds at 36 points, 20 feet away from each fan. Then, we evaluated the fans based on a 7:3 ratio of the highest wind speed recorded and the average wind speed across all 36 points. We set a wind speed of 14 feet per second and an average wind speed of 5.5 feet per second as the upper limits. Fans that delivered strong winds over a wider area received higher scores.
