Wearable fitness trackers not only allow you to monitor your health and track exercise routines, they can offer deep insight into your daily habits and how they can impact your long term wellness goals. With their special blend of practical and creative uses, and super-powered integrations with a range of other devices, fitness trackers have become hugely popular around the world. There are specialized options—like Garmin and COROS—that are specifically designed for tracking exercises, while others are more versatile, such as the Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch, which can be used for various purposes throughout the day. However, with the wearable tracker market flooded with numerous products, from big name brands like Apple and Fitbit to smaller, niche-market offerings, it's hard for users to know which one best fits their needs.

Fitbit offers a variety of affordably priced products and is a popular brand. However, we cannot recommend it for people who want to manage their exercise and health seriously.
One reason is that the accuracy of each function is not very high. In particular, the heart rate measurement accuracy is low, and there was about a 3% discrepancy with professional equipment in most of the models we tested. Furthermore, the "Inspire 3" had a difference of up to 26.2% in step count measurement, in which differences are usually not easily visible. Additionally, the measurement of blood oxygen saturation, which is a benchmark for health management, is only possible during sleep, not over a full 24 hours.
While it does incorporate an automatic workout detection feature, its detection accuracy is low and in some models, it did not function properly during our test. The dedicated smartphone app is also inconvenient. Many other apps from other companies allow you to use almost all features for free, but the Fitbit app has limited features available for free. Particularly, the sleep data analysis is only available in the paid version, "Fitbit Premium", and the free version does not enable you to fully utilize the recorded data.
If you seriously want to manage your exercise and health, you should choose a product with a well-rounded automatic workout detection function and high measurement accuracy.
Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Fitness Trackers.
This time at mybest, we conducted a variety of tests related to exercise tracking and health management on five items.
As a result, we will introduce the three types of fitness trackers we found to be particularly recommendable.
The accuracy of functions for monitoring heart rate, sleep, etc., which can aid in exercise and health management, is also excellent, with only minor discrepancies when compared with specialized equipment. Choosing either of these two would indeed be beneficial for the comprehensive recording and management of your exercise and health.
The "Apple Watch Series 9" and the "Galaxy Watch6" are both high-performance devices, with prices around $400 and $250 respectively. Therefore, there may be many people who want a fitness tracker but find it difficult to afford one. For those people, the "Xiaomi Smart Band 8" from Xiaomi is a great recommendation.
Priced at around $50, it is very affordable, about one-eighth the cost of the "Apple Watch Series 9". In terms of functionality, it may require some operation after notification of automatic workout detection, and the measurement accuracy may have some discrepancies with professional equipment. Nonetheless, it's still capable of decent workout and health management. Moreover, it is compatible with both iOS and Android OS, so it can be used on either an iPhone or an Android device.
If you're looking to buy a fitness tracker for the first time or you're conscious about getting good value for your money, the "Xiaomi Smart Band 8" might be the best choice for you.
The recommended products are as introduced above. In this section, we will explain the actual test we conducted and the detailed results.
Most fitness trackers have an automatic workout detection feature, which allows them to record everything from intense training to everyday exercises in detail.
When recording exercises with a fitness tracker, you need to start by selecting the relevant exercise from the workout menu and then start recording before you begin exercising. However, it can be tedious to select a workout each time, or risk forgetting to start recording at the beginning of your workout.
The automatic detection function is useful at such times. With sensors measuring your heart rate, perspiration, and general movement, it can detect whether you are doing a strenuous activity after a certain time has passed since you started exercising and automatically begins recording or prompts you to start. This not only helps to remind you to record, but it also automatically selects the relevant workout for you, eliminating the need to select a workout from the menu manually.
Furthermore, it can detect and record activities such as commuting and brief walks after a certain period of time, enabling you to log these everyday activities in detail. Having this feature allows you to comfortably record your workouts, which is why we looked for this feature in our review.
The most common activities used in fitness trackers are walking, running, cycling, weightlifting, and swimming. It would be convenient if the automatic detection feature also supports these exercises.
"Apple Watch Series 9" and "Galaxy Watch6" stood out in our testing for their superb automatic detection capabilities.
Both detect and start recording exercises ten minutes after beginning and provide notifications to that effect. No further operation on the fitness tracker is required after the notification, as it automatically starts recording the workout.
Also, they retroactively record from the start of the workout, allowing you to accurately capture the actual exercise time and data without discrepancy.
Among the products we tested this time, only "Apple Watch Series 9" and "Galaxy Watch 6" started recording automatically without any operation after the detection notification.
This feature is particularly useful during activities where it is difficult to operate the start, even if a notification arrives, such as cycling or swimming.
In addition to recording exercise, fitness trackers can also manage a range of health and wellness metrics. In our review, we compared the measurement accuracy of heart rate, blood oxygen concentration, and sleep quality with professional equipment versus the fitness trackers.
Heart rate can be used as an indicator of heart condition and exercise intensity. In our testing, the average error with professional equipment was about 2.7%. All three of our top recommended fitness trackers had errors below the average. For example, the "Apple Watch Series 9" showed a very excellent accuracy score with less than 1% error.
Blood oxygen concentration can be used to understand exercise load and breathing conditions during sleep. The average error with a pulse oximeter was about 1.13%. Our top three recommended fitness tracker models had errors below the average, especially the "Xiaomi Smart Band 8," which performed very well in this category with an error of 0.34%.
The sleep measurement feature can measure sleep time and quality of sleep. Sleep data can be useful for improving lifestyle habits. As a result of the test using the Philips sleep headband that can measure sleep state, the average sleep score out of 60 was 27 among our testers. Of our top three recommended fitness trackers, the "Apple Watch Series 9" scored 30, which was above average.
Although most fitness trackers have their limits compared to professional equipment, we found them all sufficient enough for daily tracking.
Short battery life is a common concern with fitness trackers since they tend to contain a lot of software and usually need to be always on. In this section, we will explain how to choose a product with just the right amount of battery life for your needs.
The battery life of fitness trackers varies by model. Some can last more than two weeks on a single full charge, while others won't even last a full day.
Typically, the more advanced devices with built-in GPS and always-on display tend to have shorter battery life. For example, the 'Apple Watch Series 9' we recommended can last up to 18 hours, and the 'Galaxy Watch 6' can last up to 40 hours, which is shorter than other models.
Devices with lower functionality and measurement accuracy, such as 'COROS Pace 3' by COROS and 'Amazfit Band 7' by Zepp Health, tend to have longer battery life. However, this is not always an advantage. Even if the tracker has a long battery life, if the functionality and accuracy are low, it may be harder to manage your exercise and health properly, so there can be a trade-off.
Although the 'Apple Watch Series 9' and 'Galaxy Watch 6' do not have long battery life, you can use them sufficiently by charging once a day. To properly manage your exercise and health, we recommend choosing a fitness tracker based on performance, not battery life.

The "Apple Watch Series 9 (GPS Model) 45mm", a smartwatch exclusively for iPhone users, was launched by Apple in September 2023. This high-performance model features an upgraded processor and chip from the previous model, and the storage capacity has doubled compared to the previous model.
The auto-detection feature for workouts supports a total of nine activities, including basic workouts such as walking, running, cycling, rowing, and pool swimming. Notifications for detected exercise begin about 10 minutes after the start of the activity, and recording starts automatically. Since the data is recorded from the time the exercise started before the notification, you can accurately record the actual duration of the exercise without any discrepancy. You can also effectively record daily activities such as commuting and walking.
The health monitoring features are robust, allowing for not only heart rate and blood oxygen concentration measurements, but also the recording of electrocardiograms. The accuracy of the blood oxygen concentration measurement is high, with a margin of error of about 1% compared to professional equipment. It also supports skin temperature measurement during sleep, making it possible to predict health conditions and physiological cycles from the data. In addition, it allows for the detection of irregular heartbeats and sleep tracking, making it suitable for those who want to manage their health in detail.
The battery life allows for up to 18 hours of regular use and up to 36 hours in low power mode. In practice, our testers tried wearing it all day from morning to evening, and the charge dropped to 10%. It is also capable of fast charging, so it can be charged from a dead battery to 100% in about 75 minutes. While the battery life isn't great due to its advanced features like built-in GPS and always-on display functionality, a single charge the night before or during your morning routine is enough for a full day's use.
The automatic workout detection feature is excellent, and each measurement function is highly accurate. This product is recommended for iPhone users who want to keep track of their exercises and manage their health.

The automatic workout detection feature supports a total of seven types of exercise, including basic walking, running, cycling, as well as elliptical training, pool swimming and more. There's no need to manually record your exercise activities; you'll receive a detection notification about 10 minutes after starting your workout, and the recording will begin automatically. Data is recorded retroactively up to the start of the exercise, so you can document your actual workout time without any discrepancies. You can also record daily activities, such as walking for more than 10 minutes or bike riding.
Most measurement functions are highly accurate and the automatic workout detection feature is also excellent. This wearable tracker is perfect for Android users who want a high-powered, highly accurate health and fitness record of their activities.

The "Amazfit GTS 4 mini" is a compact model launched in August 2022 by the smartwatch maker, Zepp Health. It's a compact smartwatch characterized by its slim and lightweight design.
The automatic workout detection feature is compatible with four types of exercises: walking, running, elliptical, and rowing. It does not support cycling, which is disappointing considering this is one of the most common exercise activities. About five minutes after starting the exercise, a detection notification comes in, and the recording starts when the start button is pressed. The data is recorded retroactively to the start time, allowing you to keep data without discrepancy with the actual workout time. Operation after the notification is required, but it allows you to record even your daily minor exercises.
The health management functions are comprehensive, equipped with many popular features such as sleep, stress, calorie consumption, and menstrual cycle tracking. Our testers noted a slight difference in heart rate measurements compared to specialized equipment, but the blood oxygen concentration and step count were accurately measured. Even compared to specialized equipment, the sleep time measurement is sufficiently precise.
The battery lasts up to 15 days with standard use. Even with heavy use, it can last more than a week. Because there's no need to charge it frequently, you can keep wearing it even while sleeping or bathing. We recommend this model for those who struggle with frequent charging.

The automatic workout detection feature supports a total of six exercise types, from basic workouts like walking, running, cycling, to some of the more rare activities like rope jumping. You can start recording your workout by pressing the start button that appears in the notification about 10 minutes after detection. Although it is possible to record before the notification, in our tests there was about a five minute discrepancy from the start. Keep in mind that it doesn’t record every minor movement, but even if you forget to start recording and begin exercising, you can still save your data.
The healthcare functions are adequately equipped, capable of measuring sleep, blood oxygen concentration, calories burned, heart rate, stress, etc. While the sleep measurement was accurate in determining the time it took to fall asleep, the time of waking up was recorded with a discrepancy of more than 30 minutes, and there was a significant error in the number and duration of REM and deep sleep. On the other hand, the accuracy of the blood oxygen concentration and step count measurements were extremely high. Even when compared with professional devices, the margin of error is about 1%, which is very accurate.
The battery life is extremely long-lasting, providing up to 16 days of use under normal conditions, and up to six days when in always-on mode. The charging speed is also fast, fully charging in about one hour. Therefore, charging for just one hour per week should be enough for regular use.

The automatic workout detection feature works for five types of exercises: cycling, running, swimming, walking, and the elliptical machine. About 10 minutes after starting the exercise, you'll receive a detection notification, and you can start recording by selecting the start button. Although it does not retroactively record back to the start of the workout, you can record data from five minutes before the notification. In case you forget to start your workout and start exercising, you can still properly save your data.
In addition to measuring sleep, stress, and calorie consumption, it is also possible to measure heart rate and blood oxygen concentration. In terms of measurement accuracy, though there was a large error in heart rate compared to professional equipment, the blood oxygen concentration and step count were accurate with about a 1% difference. Also, the sleep measurement was very accurate, with just a one-minute difference in bedtimes and wake-up times compared to professional equipment.
The battery can run for about 11 days in smartwatch mode, so you don't need to charge it every day. On the other hand, in GPS mode, it lasts only about 26 hours, so if you frequently do long hours of exercise, it would be a good idea to charge it every day.

The "Google Pixel Watch 2" is an Android-exclusive smartwatch launched by Google in October 2023. In addition to improved battery life from the previous model, the optical sensor has been enhanced, improving the accuracy of heart rate measurements.
The automatic workout detection feature supports a total of seven types of activities, including basic exercises like walking, running, and outdoor cycling, plus cross-training, swimming, and more. Exercise detection notifications appear about 10 minutes after you start working out. The record even tracks back up to 10 minutes before the user officially starts the workout. Not only is this useful for when you forget to start a workout during serious exercise, but it's also helpful for keeping track of everyday exercise.
The accuracy of measuring steps and sleep was high, and recorded little error compared to specialized equipment. On the other hand, the accuracy of heart rate measurement was somewhat low, with more than a 3% error compared to specialized equipment. The measurement of blood oxygen concentration is only during sleep, and the health management function is modest.
The battery life is on the shorter side, lasting up to 24 hours at most in always-on display mode. On the other hand, the charging speed is fast, allowing for a 50% charge in just 30 minutes. It would be best to charge it frequently every day, such as during a bath or before going out.

The device comes with a full set of health management functions, including sleep tracking, calorie consumption, and stress level measurement. However, the heart rate measurement had an average error of approximately 1.5% when compared to professional equipment. On the other hand, the sleep tracking was accurate enough to be reliable, but it should be noted that blood oxygen concentration can only be measured during sleep.

The "Charge 6" from Fitbit was released in October of 2023. It now allows for the control of music playback (YouTube Music), a feature not present in previous models, and has an integrated Google Maps tool.
The automatic detection feature for workouts can handle a total of seven types, such as walking, running, and outdoor cycling. Although it claims to automatically detect from the start of the exercise, it was only detected once in three validations, leaving our testers less than satisfied with the automatic detection feature.
All essential healthcare functions are included. It supports constant tracking of heart rate, consumed calories, steps, etc. The accuracy of sleep measurement is excellent, with a difference of only six minutes compared to professional equipment. On the other hand, the accuracy of the heart rate measurement is low, with an average error rate of about 3% compared to professional equipment. Also, the measurement of blood oxygen concentration is only during sleep, so the overall health management function is modest.
The battery lasts more than 7 days with a single full charge. As you only need to charge it once a week, even people who tend to forget to charge can say that the chances of running out of battery are low.

Zepp Health, a smartwatch maker from China, launched the 'Amazfit Band 7' in September 2022, featuring a larger screen than its predecessor models.
The automatic workout detection feature supports four types: Walking, running, elliptical, and rowing machine. It's a bit unsatisfying as the types are limited, and it doesn't include cycling, which is frequently used. On the other hand, it detects exercise pretty quickly, within about five minutes from the start. However, it does not allow recording retrospectively from the time of detection.
Under normal use, the battery lasts up to 18 days. Even with heavy use, it should be able to run for about 10 days without charging. If you're someone who frequently forgets to charge, the battery is likely to last if you charge it once a week.

The "COROS PACE 3" is from a startup founded in the state of Virginia, in the U.S. in 2014. This fitness tracker features an impressively lightweight design, weighing only about 30g, including the band.
While the workout screens and record management are extensive on this fitness tracker designed for exercise, it does not support automatic detection. Every time you exercise, you need to start recording your workout, which means that everyday activities like commuting and walking cannot be logged.
The health monitoring features are capable of performing basic measurements such as heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, and sleep. Although the accuracy of heart rate measurement is significantly inferior to specialized equipment, the measurement of blood oxygen saturation was excellent with an error of approximately 2% compared to professional devices. The accuracy of sleep measurement was also high, with a total sleep time difference of only 10 minutes compared to specialized equipment.
The battery life is incredibly long, lasting up to a maximum of 17 days with everyday use. You can continue using it without the battery dying even with a charge once every two weeks. On the other hand, when the GPS feature is operating, it can only be used continuously for up to 38 hours, so people who frequently engage in outdoor activities such as running or cycling, where GPS recording is necessary, should charge it regularly.

The "Inspire 3", released in September 2022 by the American fitness equipment manufacturer, Fitbit, has a slim wristband design, and unlike the previous model, the screen has a full-color display.
The automatic workout detection feature supports a total of seven types of activities, including walking, running, and outdoor cycling. Although there were no notifications during the exercise, we confirmed that the app on the smartphone automatically detects and records after the exercise. However, the accuracy of workout detection was low, and a record could only be obtained once in three tests. Also, even though it is possible to record retroactively, both the start and end times were a few minutes off.
It comes equipped with basic health monitoring functions such as sleep, stress, and calorie consumption. The accuracy of sleep measurement is excellent, with the overall sleep time being only two minutes off compared to professional equipment. On the other hand, the accuracy of the step counter and heart rate measurement is low and may not be useful for health and exercise management. While it also supports the measurement of blood oxygen concentration, it should be noted that it can only be measured during sleep.
The battery can last up to 10 days. If you charge it once a week, you can use it without worrying about the battery running out.

At mybest, we define the best fitness tracker as a product that continuously tracks a range of fitness and wellness metrics without errors and with utmost accuracy.
In order to find the best product, we gathered 11 top-selling fitness trackers from popular manufacturers, including Amazon, Walmart, and other sites, and thoroughly examined them based on the following five points.
Products we tested
Being one of the most common uses for a wearable fitness tracker, we valued the accuracy of the step count highly in our tests. To measure step count accuracy, we tested each product using the following methods.
While walking a predetermined route for 500 steps, the step count was measured with a smartwatch. The measurement was taken three times, and the average value of the errors was calculated. Using a 0% margin of error as the upper limit, we ranked the fitness trackers from best to worst The fitness trackers with the fewest errors as the most highly recommended.
To attain ideal user satisfaction in this category, fitness trackers should be able to accurately track heart rate even during exercise and have a low margin of error in comparison to professional heart rate sensors. We tested each product in the following ways.
While wearing a heart rate sensor and fitness tracker, we ran on a treadmill. We maintained the designated heart rate for 30 seconds, and compared the measurement results of the heart rate sensor and the GPS-equipped running watch. The results were evaluated and scored based on how closely they matched the readings from the heart rate sensor - the closer they were, the higher the recommendation score.
Test Equipment: Running Machine (DAIKOU "Home Room Runner Electric Incline DK-5101CA")
Test Equipment: Heart Rate Sensor (POLAR "Polar H10 N")
Workout Settings: Running Machine, Treadmill
Measured Heart Rates: 120bpm, 140bpm, 160bpm, 180bpm
A highly-ranked fitness tracker in this category can record with the same level of accuracy as a specialized sleep device. To measure this, we tested each product in the following ways.
Recorded sleep while wearing a sleeve headband and a fitness tracker. Compared records based on seven elements: time of falling asleep, time of waking up, total sleep time, duration of REM sleep and deep sleep, the number of awakenings, the number of REM sleeps, and the number of deep sleep. We scored the recommendations based on the alignment with professional equipment, with no alignment being the upper limit. The less the disparity, the more recommended the product is.
A recommended fitness tracker in this category can accurately measure blood oxygen concentration, to the extent that users are satisfied and there is no major discrepancy between measurements made by professional equipment. We tested each product in the following manner.
In a state of calm breathing, the blood oxygen concentration was measured simultaneously with both a pulse oximeter and a smartwatch. This was done three times, and the average value of the error was calculated. With a state of no discrepancy as the upper limit, those with less discrepancy in comparison to the professional equipment were recommended, and we ranked them from best to worst.
The best fitness trackers are able to auto-detect and accurately record all workouts, even when the user forgets to activate specific workouts. We have tested each product in the following ways with this standard in mind.
The tester checked each product and assigned points based on the following aspects, converting the recommendations for each product into scores.
How many types of automatic detection are there?
Will it start recording automatically without any operation after detection notification?
Will it need an operation to start recording after detection notification?
How many minutes does it take for detection?
Can it record backward from the start time after automatic detection?
