Our editors searched Japanese e-commerce sites (such as Rakuten, Amazon, and Kakaku.com) for the best menstrual pads for daytime use. We then chose the 16 most popular products and tested them.
We focused on the following four things:
1. Absorbency
2. Thickness
3. Ventilation
4. Comfort
Our combined impressions averaged out to a final grade from 1.0 to 5.0. We then compiled everything we learned into a buying guide about and list of the best Japanese daytime menstrual pads online.

Here are four big things to look out for when choosing your next Japanese daytime menstrual pads.
Menstrual pads come in two main types: with wings and without wings. These two constructions have different qualities that may be better suited for different lifestyles.
The wings of a pad help hold the product firmly in place on top of your underwear, making it hard to slip out of place. If you're going to do a lot of walking or you're just worried about side leakage, pads with wings are a good choice.
Thick pads with wings can feel a bit bulky in the center, so if you're going to choose a winged pad, we'd recommend going with a thinner one.
Pads without wings, along with being cheaper, also tend to be more comfortable to wear. They're easy to apply and remove, so if you're someone that needs to change their pad often, pads without wings may be easier on your skin and your underwear.
Many people claim that it's easier for pads without wings to slip out of place, so we'd recommend using these towards the end of your period.
No one knows the rhythm of your period better than you do, so if you have a wide variation of flow in your cycle, consider purchasing either or both of these pad types.
If you don't need a full-on thick pad, why wear one? Slim-type pads are available in portable sizes that are great for days when your flow isn't so heavy. They're also less likely to show through clothes like tight skirts or pants.
If you're in the midst of heavy flow, thick pads will offer you absorption and security. They can look a bit bulky, so they'd be better used with baggy or loose-fitting clothes. Also consider the kind of pouch or bag you'll be carrying them in, because they tend to take up a lot of space. They're also great for long days when you don't have many opportunities to change your pad.
Along with thickness level, different lengths of pad are better suited for different stages of your cycle. Pads that are longer than nine inches are best for heavy days; 7.8 inches to nine inches are great for regular days; and 6.7-inch pads and under are safe to use at the end of your period.
Shorter pads mean more comfort and longer pads can start to feel a bit noticeable, so also think about your clothing when considering a pad length.
Most pads come unscented, but you may be worried about your scent during your period (both for your sake and for others'). Recently, a greater variety of scented pads is becoming available, most often in floral and rose fragrances. Choose these pads if you want to keep yourself feeling and smelling fresh all day.

This was the only pad that earned top scores in all categories. It absorbed liquid into its center lining without expanding, and there was no moisture left on the top layer.
The material of this pad is comfortable enough to wear for long periods of time without any sort of discomfort. If you'll only take the very best daytime pad, this is the one.
We were surprised at how absorbent and well-ventilated these Megami pads were despite their ultra-compact size. The center of the pad absorbs liquid while leaving the top layer dry and smooth. We'd recommend these for comfortable long-time wear.
The biggest plus about these pads was the fact that they're made with 100 percent soft cotton. The center of the pad absorbed liquid without a problem, and though there was a bit of moisture left on the surface, we judged its ventilation good enough to give it a 4.0.
Since they're a bit thick, you may not be able to carry around a lot at once time; however, they're super absorbent, so they'd be good for heavy flow days;
We gave this pad a high grade because it absorbed all of the liquid into its center while only leaving a bit on the surface; this means it's both absorbent and well-ventilated.
We wish the pads were just a bit thinner, but they're pretty compact anyway. We think these pads would be comfortable even for long periods of time.
These pads received a 4.0 in the thickness category because we were able to fit as many as five pads in our carry pouch, whereas we could only squeeze two or three of other pads in there. They're also quite breathable and comfortable.
We noticed a bit of liquid seeping out the top and bottom after our liquid test, so we weren't able to give this a 4.0 in the absorption category. But if you're looking for a comfortable and portable pad, this is a great product to consider.
Hardly any liquid stuck to the tissue we put on the pad after injecting liquid, so we gave it a 4.0 for being so breathable. However, we didn't really like how liquid spread out to other areas of the pad, and we wish it was a little more comfortable.
It does a pretty decent job otherwise, though, so we'd recommend this for the point in your period when your flow starts to become lighter.
This pad didn't absorb the ideal amount of liquid, but it also didn't prevent any from seeping out the sides. We were a little concerned about liquid that stuck to the tissue we put over the top of the pad, so we gave it a 3.0 in ventilation.
Since they're not super comfortable, you may want to change them often. Luckily, we were able to fit up to five pads in a pouch.
We thought the cat design on the pad was super cute, but it's that exact design that makes the surface of the pad uneven, which may bother some.
There's also a chance you might leak out the sides if you wear this for too long, so frequent changes may be necessary. However, the material of this pad is very soft and comfortable; we'd recommend this to those looking for a cheap and comfortable pad.
We put the 16 most popular daytime menstrual pads through four tests, each designed to gauge a different factor. One was to judge its absorbency, and two more were to gauge its ventilation and thickness. The final test was to see how it felt to the touch.
We'll state the obvious: you're going to want a super absorbent pad to get you through your busy day. To test its absorption power without actually testing it on ourselves, we applied 20cc of colored water onto the upper and center areas of a pad using an eyedropper. Then we graded it on a scale of 1.0 to 5.0.
During our testing process, we noticed that pads that have a totally flat surface tend to let liquid spread over the entire pad rather than keeping it concentrated in the center. Pads with a slightly raised center have more absorption space and prevent it from leaking out the sides. We'd highly recommend looking for a pad like this.
The next thing we graded the test pads on was their thickness. We wanted to measure how easy they would be to carry around and whether or not they felt bulky to wear (before opening the actual pad).
Our tests showed us that pads made with 100 percent cotton or organic cotton tended to look and feel bulky; we could only fit two or three in our test pouch. If you want to stick to your organic habits, though, we'd suggest putting them in a larger pouch.
When those heavy days come, you'll want a pad with good ventilation to prevent skin from getting irritated and also to keep it feeling fresh. After soaking the pads in our absorbency test liquid, we placed a tissue over the pad and checked to see how much liquid was absorbed by the tissue. A wetter tissue meant less ventilation.
Results taught us that pads with a mesh design were extremely breathable. The tissue absorbed very little liquid from these pads or none at all. However, if the mesh was too fine, the tissue tended to stick to the napkin. Look for a pad with a good-size mesh pattern to stay fresh.
Menstrual pads are made with all kinds of materials from vinyl to cotton, and not all of these materials are cohesive to comfort. We used our own hands to touch the surface of a pad and judge how soft and gentle each pad surface was, then graded it on a scale of 1.0 to 5.0.
As you may have guessed already, pads made with chemical fibers like vinyl didn't always feel so gentle on our skin. After long periods of wear, they may start to cause skin irritation. If comfort is your ultimate goal, we'd recommend using cotton pads.
Choosing the best pad is just one way you can make your life easier, but there are plenty other products to help you during your period. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.
