Which to Choose: Pads or Tampons?

Which to Choose: Pads or Tampons?

The major differences between pads and tampons are their mode of application and their wear time. Each product has its pros and cons, depending on your situation and preferences.

Pads are suitable for those who prefer to take it easy during their period, as well as those who are uncomfortable with insertion. (You can simply stick a pad to your underwear.) However, depending on your menstrual flow, you’ll have to change your pads 3 to 5 times per day. If you’re often unable to go to the bathroom for an extended period of time, pads won’t be right for you.

Tampons, on the other hand, are better for those who like to stay active during their period. Since it’s inserted into your vagina to absorb menstrual blood, a tampon is less likely to leak. You also won’t have to change a tampon as often – only 2 to 3 times per day. However, for people with a lighter menstrual flow, insertion can be difficult. There’s also a risk of damaging your vagina or developing toxic shock syndrome.

Are pads or tampons better? That will all depend on what you need to feel comfortable during your monthly cycle.

Cima Maliakal
Obstetrician-Gynecologist
Cima Maliakal

We do not recommend inserting a tampon into the vagina for people who have some kind of abnormality in the pelvis that blocks the entrance to the vagina, such as a vaginal septum or an incomplete uterus.

For individuals with Mullerian anomalies, it would be advisable to stick with sanitary pads until surgical intervention resolves the issues.

In addition to sanitary pads and tampons, there are reusable cloth pads and menstrual cups available for menstrual hygiene. The appeal of both is that they can be reused, but when I actually tried using them, I found it a bit bothersome to maintain them during the depressing period of menstruation.

If You Aren't Moving Around A Lot, Most Pads Shouldn't Leak

If You Aren't Moving Around A Lot, Most Pads Shouldn't Leak

Leaks are a worry, so we tested absorption. We dropped 0.5mL of water onto the center of the pad then placed a 60 kg weight on top. We repeated the process until water leaked from the pad.

Everyone has their own level of flow, and cycles can even vary from one day to the next. For testing purposes, we figured that 55mL of menstrual blood indicates a heavy flow day. We divided 55mL by 24 to determine the amount of blood flow per hour. Here, we arrived at 2.5mL of menstrual blood leaving the body per hour and used that number during our tests.

Meanwhile, the weight placed on top of the pad is 132 Ib / 60 kg to simulate compression from the buttocks. (The average weight of American women is 165 Ibs.)

All of the products we tested could absorb more than 10mL of water, and every item had sufficient absorbency. However, even if the pad has sufficient absorbency, there’s a chance of leakage if the pad shifts or floats on top of your underwear. Thus, it’s best to choose pads that fit across your entire backside, with leak-proof features to prevent the pad from slipping.

Cima Maliakal
Obstetrician-Gynecologist
Cima Maliakal
For those who are using pads for the first time, it's recommended to start with the regular size. If you tend to have heavy flow and leakage, consider using a larger size. If you rarely have any staining, you can choose a smaller size. Adjust accordingly to find what works best for you.
Ayuka Yokoyama
Head of Personal Care Products at mybest
Ayuka Yokoyama

On days when your menstrual flow is light, change your pad 2-3 times a day, and on heavy flow days, change it 4-5 times a day.

Just because a sanitary pad can still absorb more, don't continue to use one that's soaked with menstrual blood. It could cause the growth of bacteria and become a source of odor, so please avoid wearing the same one all day.

How to Choose Pads

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Pads.

1

Two Things to Keep In Mind for a More Comfortable Period

All of the sanitary napkins we tested demonstrated sufficient absorbency, so let's take a look at what will keep pads in place during use. We asked our female testers to use daytime pads and then report their experience. Here’s what they had to say about comfortable pads.

If A Pad Has Wings, It’s Easier to Secure to Your Panties (and You’re Less Likely to Worry About Shifting)

If A Pad Has Wings, It’s Easier to Secure to Your Panties (and You’re Less Likely to Worry About Shifting)

Many women have had the unfortunate experience of menstrual blood leaking through their pants due to the pad shifting in their underwear. However, if the pad has wings, you can securely affix it to your underwear, reducing shifting and leaking.

We also found that if the pad doesn't slip around easily, it fits your butt better and you’ll feel less self-conscious. Positive comments from our testers included, “It feels more secure with wings,” and “I didn't feel any slippage from everyday movements.”

On the other hand, a pad without wings can feel like it's sliding around on top of your underwear. This could make you feel anxious because of the fear of leakage. Make sure the pads have wings before purchasing.

Wider Tape Won't Peel Off So Easily, Giving You Peace of Mind

Wider Tape Won't Peel Off So Easily, Giving You Peace of Mind

In addition to wings, we found that wider tape adheres more securely to your underwear and is less likely to peel off. Upon checking the width of each pad's main tape, we found a significant difference, depending on the product.

If the main tape is wide, it’ll be prone to staying in place. On the other hand, thinner tape is less adhesive, making it easier to detach from your underwear. While wearing these types of pads, there were instances where the front or back ends turned upwards, resulting in leaks.

If it's something that's hard to peel off, you'll feel more at ease. When browsing our individual product evaluations below, look for a ✔️ in the "Main Tape is Wide" column.

2

If You Can’t Use The Toilet Frequently, Choose Less Bulky (and Sticky) Items!

Among those who prefer to use pads, it becomes an issue when you can’t change them as frequently as you should. In that case, it’s best to choose a pad that will adhere well to your body and have little backflow, even after bearing your body weight and absorbing fluids.

Here’s what else you need to know about choosing the best pad for your period:

If You Can't Change Your Pad Often, Choose One That Isn't Sticky or Bulky

If You Can't Change Your Pad Often, Choose One That Isn't Sticky or Bulky

To test backflow, we dropped approximately 4 hours' worth of fluid (around 10mL), placed a piece of paper and a weight on top, then checked the amount of moisture that returned to the paper. We found that the pads with less backflow are also less likely to be sticky.

The key here is superabsorbent polymers (SAPs). There are tiny, artificial beads used in pads and other sanitary items to help absorb and retain fluids, prevent leaks, and control odors.

Indeed, we discovered the more SAPs a pad has, the less leakage there is. Specifically, GENIAL's DAYECO-certified Regular Flow Pads with Anion Strip had less leakage and managed to keep the surface of the pad dry.

On the other hand, if a sanitary napkin doesn't contain a high volume of these SAPs, the fluid it absorbs may be forced out by pressure, creating stickiness. Significant backflow can lead to discomfort including itchiness and rashes.

Therefore, if you’re not able to change your pads frequently, try to avoid products low in SAPs.

It's impossible to know whether a pad contains a lot of superabsorbent polymers without cutting it open and checking the inside. To help you out, look for a ✔️ in the "Lots of Superabsorbent Polymers" column when going through our rankings.

If It’s Thin, It Won’t Bunch Up And Poke Out of Your Underwear!

If It’s Thin, It Won’t Bunch Up And Poke Out of Your Underwear!

To measure comfort levels, our testers wore pads and then performed simple movements like walking and sitting cross-legged on a chair.

With lighter pads, you’re less likely to feel uncomfortable. In fact, you may forget that you’re even wearing it! Plus, if it's thin it won’t show through your clothes, even if you're wearing tight pants.

Thick pads give an unpleasant feeling of dragging on your bottom. Comments from our testers include, “I don't want to move if the pad is too thick,'' and “The presence of a pad makes me uncomfortable.''

Another drawback of thick pads is that they’ll become heavy after absorbing a lot of fluid. If your underwear sags and lifts the pad off your butt, it can cause leaks. Your best bet is to choose a thin pad that’ll snugly fit against your butt.

Ayuka Yokoyama
Head of Personal Care Products at mybest
Ayuka Yokoyama
Thin ones are convenient to carry around. Even if you stack about 4 of them, they don't get too thick, so they're easy to store in a pouch.
3

People With Sensitive Skin Should Choose Pads With a Softer Touch

People With Sensitive Skin Should Choose Pads With a Softer Touch

People with sensitive skin should choose pads that are gentle on the skin.

With softer pads, our testers hardly noticed any friction against their bottoms. There was also no irritation so it was easy to relax and feel comfortable.

On the other hand, there is a tendency to feel more friction with harder pads. Feedback from our testers regarding harder pads included, "It was so hard against my skin that I wanted to take it off," and "It rubbed against my butt and hurt.”

So if you have sensitive skin or prefer softer materials, choose a pad that’s more plush.

mybest's Top Choice: Gentle on Skin and Absorbs a Lot of Fluid – It’s a Comfortable Pad for Most

What we loved

  • Soft and molds to the shape of your body
  • Stays in place with wide tape and wings
  • Very absorbent and not prone to leaks

What we didn't love

  • Some may find it too thick
  • Prone to backflow and feeling sticky

The Always Maxi Long Super Pads With Wings (Unscented) from Procter & Gamble boasts a Leak Guard and claims to prevent almost 100% of all leaks.

During our tests, this pad absorbed up to 12.5mL of fluids without leakage. Assuming a flow of 2.5mL per hour, that means it can potentially absorb up to 5 hours' worth of menstrual blood. However, when there’s pressure applied, the liquid will backflow, resulting in some stickiness.

The main advantage of its winged design and wide tape is that it’s less likely to shift during your daily activities. Although it is somewhat thick, it gradually molds to the shape of your body over time so you may forget you’re wearing it at all.

With a soft touch, you won’t experience as much friction against your skin when you walk or sit down. On the flip side, one of the testers said, "It would have been better if it was thinner." If you like thinner pads, this one may be too thick for your liking.

With excellent absorption and resistance to shifting, this Always daytime sanitary pad could be your number one ally during your cycle.

A Thin Pad With Wings That’s Made Without Harmful Chemicals

What we loved

  • No artificial fragrances or dyes
  • Thin and stays in place
  • Has an organic cotton cover

What we didn't love

  • Won’t absorb fluids as well
  • Tendency to collect backflow

Bodywise's natracare Ultra Extra Regular Period Pads are designed for those who want to avoid chemicals that could cause allergies or other health issues. It has a certified organic cotton cover and doesn’t contain artificial fragrances, dyes, or chlorine.

During our tests, we found that it can hold approximately 4.5 hours' worth of menstrual blood totalling 12mL (or 2.5mL per hour). Additionally, its broad wings and wide tape will help keep it attached to your underwear.

According to one tester who wore this pad, "I was so unconcerned about the thickness, I would forget that I had it on". The surface of the pad didn’t cause much discomfort and felt pleasant to touch.

However, the natracare pad doesn’t include a water-absorbent polymer. This led moisture to backflow under pressure. If you're bothered by stickiness, you’ll need to change this pad more often.

Generally speaking, this product is a good fit for those who want a pad made from organic fibers, and thin enough to wear without being conscious of it.

An Affordable Winged Pad That Does a Decent Job of Absorbing Fluid

What we loved

  • Affordable price point
  • Designed to prevent shifting
  • Thin, with sufficient absorbency

What we didn't love

  • Moisture seeps out under pressure
  • Some may find it too stiff

The AmazonBasics Ultra Thin Pads with Flexi-Wings for Periods is sold exclusively by Amazon. One of its highlights is its affordability. It costs about $5 for a pack of 36 pads, which amounts to less than 15 cents per pad.

During our absorption capacity tests, it absorbed 10.5mL of liquid. If we assume a flow of 2.5mL per hour, this equates to roughly 4 hours’ worth of absorption. The wings and wide main tape result in less shifting.

However, when weight is put on the pad, a large amount of moisture tends to seep back out. When a gush of menstrual blood occurs, you’ll want to wipe the surface or change the pad promptly.

Although it’s thin, it’s also not the softest pad we’ve tested. The surface feels hard, almost like it’s been laminated. You may be prone to noticing it when you walk, sit, or fidget.

With a rough texture, it’s not the best choice for those with sensitivities. However, if you’re looking to save money, it’s a good value for an otherwise comfortable pad with sufficient absorbency.

Fits Well, but Not Recommended for Long-Term Wear During Heavy Flows

What we loved

  • Made without harmful chemicals
  • Thin and soft, so it’s hardly noticeable
  • Good for light period days

What we didn't love

  • Narrow tape, so it may come off easily
  • Can accumulate backflow, leading to stickiness
  • Not good for long-term wear during heavy days

The Seventh Generation Ultra-Thin Pads with Wings promises leak protection and comfort without rayon, dyes, deodorants, or artificial fragrances. It’s an ideal choice if you want to avoid potentially dangerous chemicals.

It’s thin and soft, with minimal friction against the skin. Positive feedback from our testers includes, "It's so comfortable to wear, I forgot I even had a pad on."

During our tests, it absorbed 10mL of liquid. Assuming a flow rate of 2.5mL per hour, this pad can absorb about 4 hours' worth of menstrual blood. However, when pressure is applied due to body weight, a lot of moisture returns, so it’ll probably feel sticky if you don’t change it right away.

Although it has wings, the main tape is narrow, so there is a possibility that it may peel off your underwear. It’s prone to getting sticky but it otherwise feels good against the skin. We think it’s best suited for those who are able to change their pads more frequently. It’s also good for lighter flow days.

Doesn’t Feel Sticky and Features Patented Technology to Prevent Odors and Bacteria

What we loved

  • Minimal backflow so it won’t feel sticky
  • Built-in strip prevents odor and bacteria
  • Made without harmful chemicals

What we didn't love

  • You’ll need time to break it in
  • Narrow tape, so it’s prone to peeling off

Genial Day's ECO-certified Regular Flow Pads with Anion Strip does not contain dyes, fragrances, chlorine-based bleach, or heavy metals. It boasts a patented anion strip to prevent odors and bacterial growth.

During our tests, it absorbed 10mL of liquid, which is roughly 4 hours’ worth of protection.

Even when we applied weight, we hardly noticed any backflow. So even if you have to wear it for an extended period, you likely won’t have to worry about it feeling sticky against your butt.

It’s also thin and fits easily against the curve of your body, so you can move around and not notice you’re wearing it. You’ll need some time to break it in when you first put it on as it won’t immediately feel soft and contouring, but eventually you’ll enjoy comfortable, friction-free wear.

It has wings, but the main tape is narrow so the ends may peel off. There are concerns about it slipping, so we recommend this pad for days when you’re less active.

  • Must be able to change your pad regularly

During our tests, it absorbed 10.5 mL of liquid, which is roughly 4 hours’ worth of menstrual blood. However, when you apply pressure (when sitting, for instance), the moisture will backflow, resulting in an unpleasant, sticky feeling.

On the other hand, the wings and wide main tape make it less likely to shift. It’s also quite soft, and our testers didn’t find it unpleasant to wear.

Comments from our testers include, "This pad was so thin that I hardly felt it was there," and "It fit well on my butt." As long as you’re able to change it frequently, you’ll be comfortable wearing this pad.

You Might Feel a Chill in Your Thighs, but at Least It’s Not Sticky

What we loved

  • Uses organic fibers
  • Excellent absorption
  • Doesn’t feel sticky

What we didn't love

  • Essential oils can be irritating
  • The thin strip of tape won’t adhere as well

The Honey Pot Company's Organic Cotton Cover Regular Pads with Wings uses organic cotton for the top sheet and a highly absorbent pulp core on the inside. It’s infused with mint, lavender, and aloe for a calm, soothing sensation.

Per our tests, it absorbed up to 12.5mL of liquid, which equates to roughly 5 hours’ worth of menstrual blood. Even when we applied pressure, only a small amount of moisture backflowed so it’s unlikely to feel sticky. Thus, it’s a good choice for active days when you can’t use the toilet as frequently.

It’s thin and conforms to the curves of your bottom. It’s also soft and won’t lead to much friction or irritation.

On the other hand, although it has wings, it has a narrow strip of tape, so it could peel off easily. Also, it contains essential oils, which some people are allergic to. A few of our testers didn’t like the cooling sensation from the mint and had to stop using it. That said, everyone is different, so we recommend trying this pad for a short amount of time first.

Fits Well, but May Have a Hard Time Staying In Place

What we loved

  • No synthetic dyes or pesticides
  • Thin and conforms to your backside
  • Has a soft, smooth finish

What we didn't love

  • Can feel sticky with extended wear
  • Narrow tape won’t prevent shifting

The L. Regular Pad is made with a top layer of pure cotton and a 100% plant-based absorbent core. You won’t find dyes, fragrances, or synthetic pesticides here.

This pad is quite thin and will conform to the shape of your bottom nicely. Our testers were pleased, saying, "From the moment I put it on, it fit my butt, and I didn't feel any discomfort at all." Although it's not fluffy, it doesn’t cause much friction thanks to its smooth finish.

During our tests, we measured 10mL of absorption, which is about 4 hours’ worth of period protection. Unfortunately, applying pressure to the pad brings back a lot of that moisture, so it’s bound to feel sticky if you don’t change it often. Despite having wings, the narrow tape won’t prevent this pad from shifting.

Its drawbacks aside, this pad is otherwise comfortable. We recommend it for light flow days.

An Excellent Fit, but Can Feel Sticky After Long-Term Use

What we loved

  • 100% organic cotton top sheet
  • Thin design that’s barely noticeable
  • Great absorbency

What we didn't love

  • Will get sticky with long-term wear
  • Narrow tape doesn’t adhere well

Rael's Organic Cotton Cover Pads use a chlorine-free pulp combined with a super-absorbent polymer for the absorbent core. The top sheet is made with 100% certified organic cotton sourced from Texas.

Its soft, smooth touch against the skin received positive reviews from our testers. Whether they walked or sat, our testers barely noticed the pad was there at all. We measured an absorbency capacity of 11.5mL, which is very good.

On the other hand, this pad could feel sticky long-term due to the slight backflow under pressure. It has wings, but the narrow tape strip doesn’t stick firmly to the edges of the underwear.

Stickiness aside, it otherwise feels good against the skin. We recommend it for days you’re able to replace your pads frequently.

Absorbs Well but It Doesn’t Have Wings to Keep It in Place

What we loved

  • Minimal backflow, minimal stickiness
  • Contains odor neutralizers
  • Feels soft against the skin

What we didn't love

  • Doesn’t have wings
  • Also has a narrow adhesive strip

Stayfree's Maxi Regular Pads advertise Tri-Block Odor Protection. In other words, it contains odor neutralizers to keep you smelling and feeling fresh.

During our absorption tests, we measured 10mL of liquid or 4 hours' worth of menstrual blood. Furthermore, when we applied pressure, there was minimal backflow. This suggests that it won’t feel sticky, even after long-term use.

At first, our testers felt this pad was heavy against their bottom, but over time it contoured to their body. They were also impressed with how soft it felt against their skin.

However, the lack of wings and a narrow strip of tape make it likely to shift. Even with its excellent absorption, this design turned off most of our testers, with one of them commenting, "Just the fact that it doesn't have wings makes me feel uneasy."

It’s Thin but It Gets Sticky and Won’t Stay In Place

What we loved

  • It’s thin
  • It’s also hypoallergenic

What we didn't love

  • Prone to feeling sticky
  • No wings, with a thin adhesive strip

U by Kotex Clean & Secure Maxi Pads are hypoallergenic, as they don’t contain fragrances, lotions, or natural rubber latex. They also have a blue-lined design on the top of the pad.

We measured an absorption capacity of 11.5mL, but when we applied pressure, we noticed a small amount of backflow. This could make you feel sticky with long-term wear.

A major downside is that it tends to slip due to a lack of wings and a thin adhesive strip. Comments from our testers include, "I feel uneasy because it doesn't have wings," and "It was uncomfortable because it moved around on top of my underwear."

Absorbency

Absorbency

The standard for pads with an exceptional level of absorption is a product that does not leak easily, even after 4 hours of use on days with heavy menstrual flow.

Scoring Method

We repeatedly performed the process of dripping 0.5mL of water onto the center of a pad and placing a 132 lb / 60 kg weight on it until water leaked from the pad. We based our score on absorbency, favoring items with a limit of 12.5mL.

Test Conditions

  • Use the pad in a flat position.

  • Absorb 0.5mL and placed a 132Ib weight on it.

2

Resistance to Shifting

Resistance to Shifting

We established the ideal standard here as a pad that firmly sticks to your underwear and stays in place, even when you’re moving.

Scoring Method

We checked each product and scored them according to the following points:

What We Checked

  • Does it have wings?

  • How wide is the tape?

  • Direction of the tape

  • The width between tapes

3

Overall Comfort

Overall Comfort

The standard for a product to be deemed satisfactory in this area is a pad that can be worn during daily activities without any bother.

Scoring Method

We tested each product by wearing them within our underwear, then evaluated their level of comfort, scoring accordingly.

Test Conditions

  • Testers: Women who have used American pads

  • Verification conditions: Perform actions such as sitting, crossing legs, and walking

What We Checked

  • Do you not mind the feel of the pad when you wear it?
4

Amount of Backflow

Amount of Backflow

We set the standard here as a pad that absorbs four hours' worth of menstrual blood and won’t backflow when pressure is applied.

Scoring Method

We dripped 10 mL of fluid, assuming it would be enough for 4 hours. Then we placed a piece of paper with a 132 lb / 60 kg weight on top to simulate the effect of pressure from sitting. We checked the amount of moisture that transferred to the paper. The less moisture we detected, the better it was at minimizing backflow.

Test Conditions

  • Verification Equipment: Paper Towel & Scale
5

Softness on the Skin

Softness on the Skin

The pads with the best feeling against the skin don’t produce much friction against your skin.

Scoring Method

Our testers wore each pad and assessed the feel against their skin.

Test Conditions

  • Tester: Women who have used American pads
  • Verification conditions: Perform actions such as sitting, crossing legs, and walking

What We Checked

  • Is there any discomfort?

Is This Normal? What Are the Signs That I Should Go to the Hospital?

Check the Amount of Bleeding and the Level of Pain

Check the Amount of Bleeding and the Level of Pain

Confirm whether the amount of menstrual blood and the pain associated with menstruation are normal.

Although the amount of blood loss will vary among women, approximately 80mL is considered the standard amount of blood flow during a menstrual period. If total blood loss exceeds 80mL, that’s a sign of menorrhagia (heavy periods). Meanwhile, if your blood loss is less than 30mL throughout your period, you may have oligomenorrhea (irregular periods) or hypomenorrhea (light periods).

Also: if your menstrual pain is interfering with your work, school, or daily life and over-the-counter medicines don’t offer relief, this could be a sign of something serious. In that case, you’ll want to visit your gynecologist as soon as possible.

Even girls who suffer from severe menstrual pain may sometimes believe it to be normal. However, pain that interferes with your daily life is not normal, and you should get examined at an obstetrics and gynecology clinic.
